Chapter 58

Everyone was too shocked to say anything. They couldn't believe it was that person who had called the police. Razia felt like someone had ripped her heart out and squeezed the blood out of it. "Humaira?" she said stunned. "Ha, maine bhulaya hai police koh yaha," Humaira said determined. Zoya couldn't believe it! Humaira had called the police against her own mother? She looked at her sister for answers but all she saw was this sense of determination and guilt in her eyes. "Kohi hume baatayega keh kya horaha hai?" Dilshad asked, voicing everyone's opinion that had no idea what was going on. Zoya looked at Asad unsure about how the truth was going to affect everyone. "Ammi, aap koh yaad hai keh humne paata kiya tha keh Tanveer koh yaha kisine jaan bhoojkar laaya hai," Farhan spoke up. Dilshad and the other family members nodded. "Woh Razia bi thi," Asad said. All eyes turned towards Razia who stood with her head bowed in shame. Asad went on to explain everything that Razia had done to break Zoya's and his marriage, as well as to break Haider and Humaira's rishta. He even told them that Razia had confessed to everything. "Asad, tumne hume baataya kyun nahi?" Rashid asked upset. "Abu, hum aap sabh koh saach baatane wale the, Haider aur Humaira keh nikkah keh baad," Zoya replied. "Tum dono humse chupana kyun chathe the?" Dilshad asked. "Aisa nahi hai Ammi. Ghar mein shaadi ka mahaul tha toh humne soocha keh hum thoda wait karlenge," Asad explained. "Aur maine hi Asad se yeh bola tha," Zoya added. "Par Humaira tume kaise paata yeh sabh?" Asad asked. "Uss din jab aap ghar aaye the, main wapaas aayi thi aur maine sabh sunliya tha. Main wait karahi thi keh aap ghar mein sabh koh baata deh aur phir Ammi koh saaza mile, lekin aapne aisa kuch nahi kiya. Jab maine aaj Bhaji koh dekha toh mujhe samaj aagaya keh aap dono kuch nahi karne wale hai. Toh maine police inspector koh phone kiya aur woh file jis mein saare saboot hai woh aapke room se lekar, unne diya. Mujhe toh yakeen nahi hua keh meri Ammi aisa karsakthi hai," Humaira said disgustedly as tears filled her eyes. Zoya walked up to her sister, "kyun kiya tumne aisa? Aaj tumari mehendi hai Humaira," she said. "Aap koh yaad hai Bhaji jab aapka aur Bhaijaan ka rishta horaha tha toh aapne hi bola tha keh rishte jhoot se shuru nahi hosakthe. Toh aaj yeh sabh jaane keh baad, main kaise Haider se rishta jhod sakthi. Mujhse nahi hota Bhaji," Humaira said sadly. "I am sorry humi," Zoya said. "Aap kyun maafi maang rahi hai Bhaji. Yeh jaante huwe bhi keh aap Abu ki beti hai, unne joh aapke saath kiya uskehliye toh main aapse maafi maangti hoon," Humaira said folding her hands. "Nahi humi, please! Tumari kohi galti nahi hai, don't ever apologize," Zoya told her. The family was confused as to what Humaira was saying so Asad filled in everyone about Razia, Gaffur, and Zoya's mother's past, and how Zoya was actually Gaffur's older daughter. "Aapne mujhe baataya kyun nahi? Kabh se jaanti thi aap yeh sabh?" Humaira said upset. "Main tume nahi baata sakthi humi. Main nahi chathi thi keh jin ma baap par tum bachpan se baroosa karahi ho unse tumara baroosa uthe. Bahut takleef hoti hai jab aisa hota hai, issi liye maine tume baataya nahi," Zoya said sadly. Humaira pulled Zoya in an embrace and both the sisters let the tears roll down their face.

"Mr. Khan, kya hum Razia bi koh leja sakthe hai?" the inspector interrupted. Everyone looked at each other unsure of what to say. Asad knew that Zoya didn't want to cause trouble in the wedding but he also could never forgive Razia for what she did. And, now that the truth was out, he didn't think the need to hide. "Lejayiye inne," Asad announced. The inspector just nodded and was about to take Razia away when she started yelling at Gaffur. "Aree...kuch kijiye na! Aap chup kyun khade hai? Humaira keh Abu, kuch boliye," she pleaded as the officers dragged her away. "Ek minute!" Gaffur finally spoke up. Razia looked at her husband hopefully. Gaffur walked up to her, "Jaanti ho Razia, main hamesha yehi umeed karta tha keh tum khabhi na khabhi badal jaogi. Mujhe umeed thi keh tum beeti baatein bhulkar Zoya koh apna logi. Lekin yeh khabhi nahi hua! Phir jab Zoya ki shaadi huwi toh main bahut khush tha, maine soocha keh aabh Zoya apne zindagi mein khush reha sakthi hai. Joh pyaar aur izzat usse main nahi deh saka woh usse Asad aur uska parivaar dehga. Lekin, tum toh woh bhi nahi hona dehna chathi," Gaffur said. There was a pain in his voice that showed how broken he felt on the inside. "Galti thi meri keh main khabhi tume yeh nahi bol saka keh tum galat ho. Tum galat thi jab tum meri mausam si bacchi toh anaad bolti thi, tum galat thi jab tum usse najayaz hona ka jhoot bolti thi, tum galat thi jab tum har baar usse uski dil ki baat sunne se rokti thi, aur tum aaj bhi galat ho. Afsoos toh yeh hai mujhe keh main khabhi apni galati theek nahi karsaka, aur meri sabh se baadi galati yeh thi keh maine tumse nikkah kiya," Gaffur stated as Razia looked at him shocked. "Aaj se main tumare saath apne saare rishte thod tha hoon," he said shocking everyone. Humaira silently sobbed as Zoya pulled her in a hug. The police left along with a pleading Razia. She kept yelling for someone to help her but it all fell on deaf ears. "Main aap sabh se maafi chatha hoon, joh bhi Razia ne kiya main jaanta hoon keh aap sabh koh usse bahut takleef huwi hai," Gaffur said folding his hands in front of the Khan family. "Chalo Humaira," Gaffur said looking at his daughter. Zoya let go off her sister. Asad rushed up to her and placed his arm around her shoulder, for support. "Asad, kohi kuch bol kyun raha hai? Kya hum aise Humaira koh jaane denge?" Zoya asked him. She kept her voice slow so only Asad could hear her. "Zoya, shayad ghar walon koh yeh sabh samajne kehliye thoda sa waqt chahiye," Asad comforted. "Lekin Humaira, uski kya galati hai iss sabh mein?" Zoya asked hurt. "Uski kohi galati nahi hai lekin joh bhi hua uske baad thoda waqt toh chahiye na," Asad explained. Zoya felt terrible. This is exactly why she had wanted to hide the truth till the wedding took place.

Gaffur was trying his best to comfort a crying Humaira. He knew that it must be hard for to be cheated by her own mother. Though Gaffur knew Razia's true colors, he had never showed that to anyone, not even Humaira. Gaffur never thought that truth will come out like this, and his daughter would have to face it in front of everyone. As she sobbed huddled into his chest, "I am sorry Abu, main aapko sabh baatana chathi thi lekin agar aap mujhe yeh sabh karne nahi dehte toh main apne aap koh khabhi maaf nahi karpati. Ammi ne bahut baada gunna kiya tha! Bhaji, Bhaijaan, aur sabh koh kitni takleef huwi thi Tanveer ki wajase. Agar hum saach nahi doond the toh aaj shayad Bhaji aur Bhaijaan alag hojate, aur shayad main aur Haider bhi," Humaira cried. "Nahi beta! Tumne kuch galat nahi kiya tha. Balki, mujhe toh tum par garv hai. Aaj tak main bhi tumare Ammi keh saamne saach nahi bol paaya. Lekin, tumne toh sabh keh saamne saach bol diya," Gaffur said, proud of his daughter for doing what was right. He cupped her face and placed a kiss on her forehead. Humaira smiled through her tears. "Abu...aapse ek baat bol sakthi ho?" she asked. Gaffur nodded, telling her to proceed. "Aapne Bhaji ka saath joh kiya woh galat tha! Woh aapki beti hai, toh unne bachpan se woh haq bhi milna chahiye tha," Humaira told him. "Jaanta ho beta," Gaffur said shamefully. "Humaira," someone said and they were interrupted from going further.

Inside, the Khan family slowly ushered guests out, apologizing for what had occurred. Zoya couldn't hold it together anymore. Seeing Razia today, and knowing everything that she did, Zoya recalled every single time that Razia had deliberately caused her pain. She has always hoped that someday, Razia will realize what she was doing was wrong. But, that never happened. And, it probably never will! Seeing tears roll down her cheeks, Asad pulled her closer. "Zoya, please...don't cry!" he requested. "Main bahut kosish karti hoon Asad phir bhi shayad khabhi samaj nahi paungi keh kohi aise kaise karsaktha hai," she cried. "I know! Par meri liye sirf tum important ho. Agar tum aise hi rohti rahogi toh humare babies ka kyon khayal rakega?" he questioned. Asad knew that bringing the babies up will divert her attention on them. "Aur tum chathi ho keh humare bacche tume cry baby bhulaye?" Asad added. She chuckled through at her tears. "That's better," he said, wiping her tears. At that moment, the family walked up to them. "Tume yeh sabh akele sehane kohi zaroorat nahi thi beta, tum hume sabh baata sakthi thi," Dilshad said to Zoya. "Main jaanti hoon Ammi! Par main nahi chathi keh meri ateet keh wajase aane wale rishte kamzoor hojaye. Main nahi chathi thi keh aap sabh Humaira ya uske Abu koh...," she trailed off not knowing how to put it in words. Dilshad smiled at the girl in front of her. She knew Zoya was someone who would sacrifice anything for the people she loved. But, Dilshad also knew how Zoya must feel. She was a strong girl but she was also really sensitive. And, she has never had anyone to tell that they were there. "Zoya, tum iss ghar ka issa ho beta! Tumare saath kuch galat ho yeh hum khabhi nahi chodenge. Shayad uski wajase Razia bi ya Gaffur saab hi kyun na ho," Dilshad stated. "Ammi, main jaanti keh unn dono ne meri saath bahut galat kiya hai but please aap log uski saaza Humaira koh mat dijiye," Zoya requested. Dilshad looked at Rashid and he smiled at her, assuring her that everything was fine. "Zoya, aisa kuch nahi hai beta. Humaira aur Haider ki jab sagai huwi thi tab se Humaira bhi iss ghar ka issa hai. Shaadi waise hi hogi jaise plan kiya hai," Rashid spoke up. Zoya beamed as she wrapped her hands around Dilshad. "Thank you Ammi Abu! You guys are the best parents ever," she declared. Everyone smiled at a happy Zoya. As they broke apart, "Ammi, mujhe Humaira keh paas jaana chahiye," Zoya said. "Lekin beta, iss halat mein," Dilshad said concerned. "Ammi, main theek hoon. Aur waise bhi, yaha aap log sabh mere saath hai. Waha Humaira akeli hogi, toh main," Zoya explained. "Theek hai beta, lekin tum Asad koh bhi lekar jao. Tumara khayal rakne bhi toh kohi chahiye," Dilshad said. Zoya nodded in agreement. Asad took Zoya upstairs so they could change, get some clothes, and leave.

Gaffur and Humaira were surprised to see Haider in the Khan parking lot. "Uncle, kya main Humaira se akele mein baat karsaktha hoon?" Haider said seeking his permission. Gaffur was a little worried about what Haider was going to say. But, he agreed anyway. Haider took Humaira to one of the corners of the garden. Humaira couldn't look into his eyes. She felt responsible for everything that her mother had done. She felt guilty. "So, now you won't even look at me?" he asked. Tears spooled in the brim of her eyes, "I am sorry Haider. I can't believe that my own mother can do something like this," Humaira told him. "Hey, tumari kohi galati nahi hai," Haider said. "Lekin Haider, ghar wale toh mujhe khabhi phele jaise dekhenge. Aur phir main apne aapko kaise maaf karsakthi ho? Maine itne saal Bhaji ka joh haq tha woh cheena hai," Humaira said guiltily. Haider moved forward and cupped her face, making her looking into his eyes. "Humi...yeh sabh joh bhi hua iss mein tumari kohi galati nahi hai," he said. "Lekin Haider, andar sabh log. Kya tume lagtha woh aabh bhi humari shaadi kehliye ha bolenge?" Humaira questioned sure. "Of course, they will!" he said confidently. "I am scared. Main tume phir se khona nahi chathi thi," she said. "You won't! Aisa kuch nahi hoga," Haider comforted. "Mujhe aabh chalna chahiye, Abu wait karahe honge," Humaira said. Haider moved forward and placed a kiss on her head. "I love you humi! And kuch bhi hojaye I will be here," he said. Just hearing those words, made her heart beat a little faster. "I love you," Humaira said, looking deeply in his eyes. She then returned to Gaffur and they left.

A while later, Zoya walked into the Siddiqui house with Asad by her side. She couldn't believe that she had come back here. Other than the few times she had visited Humaira, Zoya never stepped into this house. She knew that no one wanted her here so she thought it was better to ignore these people than be a burden on them. But today, she was here for her sister. Zoya knew how hard it must be for Humaira to find out the truth about her mother, and about what her father had hidden all these years. Latif was surprised to find Zoya at the house. He didn't know what had happened. But, when Humaira and Gaffur returned, they seemed to be upset. He had asked where Razia was but didn't get any answers. "Zoya beti, tum?" he said. Zoya greeted Latif and then asked about Humaira. "Humaira, apne kamre mein hai. Aur saab apne kamre mein. Paata nahi kya hua hai, bahut pareshaan hai dono. Shaadi mein toh kohi takleef nahi haina?" Latif asked. "Nahi nahi Latif, aisa kuch nahi hai. Aap ek kaam kijiye, Khane kehliye kuch bana dijiye," Zoya told him. Latif agreed and left from there. "Mujhe Humaira se baat karni hogi," Zoya told Asad. "Chalo...main tume upar ley chaltha hoon," Asad said. After reaching her destination, Zoya told Asad to get their things and wait in her room. "Will you be ok?" Asad asked. "Don't worry, main theek hoon," Zoya said with a smile.

Humaira was on her bed crying her heart out. She didn't know when was the last time she had felt so betrayed. Her own parents have hidden so much from her. Humaira has witnessed how poorly her mother used to treat Zoya since they were kids. Zoya never received a mother's love, which should be the right of every child. Her father was coordinal with Zoya but he never showered her with love either. And now, her mother wanted to destroy Zoya and Asad's as well as her life. Just then, she had a knock on the door. She didn't answer. Someone knocked again. "Abu please...mujhe akele rehna hai," she yelled. Few seconds later, there was a knock again. "Abu...please leave me alone," Humaira requested. "Humi...main hoon! Darwaza kholo," Zoya stated. Humaira sat up on her bed. "Bhaji?" she said surprised. What was Zoya doing here? "Humi...darwaza kholo! You know I am 6 months pregnant, I can't just stand here forever you know," Zoya said knocking on the door again. A minute later, the door opened and Zoya saw her sister's puffy eyes. "Bhaji...aap...," Humaira was startled when her sister just moved forward and engulfed her in an embrace. "Mujhe maaf karde humi...main khabhi nahi chathi thi keh tume saach aise paata chale," Zoya apologized. "Bhaji please...saach toh mujhe paata chalna hi haina. Par ha, aapko mujhe phele hi baatana dehna chahiye tha," Humaira said, slightly upset. "I just didn't know how to," Zoya said. The sisters walked inside and took a seat on the bed. "I can't believe keh aapke saath kohi aisa karsaktha hai," Humaira said, placing a hand on her sister's cheek. "Humaira, ek baat bolo," Zoya said. Humaira nodded her telling her to proceed. "Zindagi bahut choti hai humi. Aur iss mein bahut saari mushkile aati hai lekin khushiya bhi aati hai. Meri maano toh bhul jao buri baato koh. Main jaanti hoon keh yeh asaan nahi hota par agar sahi saath miljaye toh mushkil bhi nahi hota. Main tumse sirf yeh kahongi keh tum beeti baatein aur buri yaadein bhulkar aage badhjao, Haider keh saath," Zoya said smilingly. "Aap kaise karleti hai yeh sabh?" Humaira asked. Zoya looked at her puzzled. "Aapke saath itna sabh hogaya aur phir bhi aap sabh keh baare mein soochti hai. Aur future keh sapne dekhti hai," Humaira explained. "You know Humi, main khabhi bhi apne future keh sapne nahi dekhti thi. Mujhe lagtha tha keh Allah miyan ne mere liye pyaar nahi likha hai. Lekin, jab se main Asad se milli hoon toh woh mujhe sapne dikhata hai, aur mujhe khwaish hai keh main Asad keh aur humare baccho keh saath aane wale khal keh sapne dekho," Zoya said dreamily. Humaira smiled at her, extremely happy for her sister. "Jab tumari shaadi hojayegi toh tum samjogi," Zoya said to her. "Bhaji, ghar wale mujhse naraaz toh nahi haina?" Humaira asked. "Nahi humi...aisa kuch nahi tha. Sabh bas thode shocked hai yeh sabh jaankar but I am sure sabh theek hojayega," Zoya told her. Humaira hugged her sister, "thank you Bhaji!" she said. "Humi...tum kab se mujhe thanks bolne lagi huh? Aur chalo, jaakar fresh hojao. Agar Haider aisi dulhan dekhega toh nikkhe keh bhaag jayega," Zoya joked and both the sisters burst out laughing. After Humaira went to the bathroom, Zoya left to check on someone else.

When Zoya walked into her father's room, all she saw was darkness. She slowly walked inside and found the light switch. Flipping it on, Zoya was shocked to see the sight in front of her. Her father sat on the recliner in the corner with his head buried in his hands. From the way his body was moving, Zoya could tell that he was sobbing. As if sensing the lights around him, he looked up. Zoya felt a gasp escape her lips. He looked so pale and weak, his eyes dry and red. He looked like he has aged 10 years in just the past couple hours. Zoya felt her heart constrict seeing him in pain. She tried not to care but her kindness wouldn't agree. Zoya walked forward with the tray of food she had bought. "Main aap kehliye Khana laayi thi, khalijiye," she told him. As she placed the tray on the table in front of him and turned to leave, "Kya Zeenat khabhi mujhe maaf karpayi hogi?" he uttered. Zoya's feet halted at the mention of her mother's name. "Main jaanta hoon keh joh maine kiya, uss kehliye na zeenat na hi tum mujhe maaf karsakthe ho," Gaffur said remorsefully. Zoya just looked at him quietly, unable to speak. "Zeenat se toh main khabhi maafi nahi maang saka lekin main tumse maangna chatha hoon," he said. Folding his hands in front of her, "Mujhe maaf kardo Zoya. Main jaanta hoon keh bachpan se maine tume bahut takleef di hai. Lekin aaj main uss har ek baat jisne tume dukh diya hai, uss kehliye tumse maafi maangta hoon jiski waja main aur Razia hai," Gaffur said. Zoya felt tears fill her orbs, clouding her vision. She felt like a lump forming in her throat. From the past 24 years, they have made her lead a life she didn't deserve. They hurt her without a reason. And now, one sorry was enough. Could it really fix everything? It took her a moment to gather her thoughts. "Joh bhi hua hai woh sirf ek maafi se theek nahi hosaktha. Mujhe thoda waqt chahiye, sabh samaj ne kehliye. Shayad ek din main aapko maaf bhi karpao," Zoya hoped. "Tum bilkul Zeenat jaisi ho," Gaffur told her. Hearing her mother's name, Zoya felt the tears now on her cheeks. "Khana thanda hojayega, aap khalijiye," she said and ran out of the room. As she came back to the living room, Zoya saw her husband waiting for her. She just walked up to him and hid herself in his chest. The one place where she felt comforted, the most peaceful. Asad knew how hard this was for her. He just pulled her close and held her there, in silence. Later that night, Asad suggested that they could eat in Zoya's room along with Humaira. Zoya and Humaira told him stories of when they used to be kids, and what they used to do. As Asad saw them giggle about something, he was so glad. Asad knew that both the sisters loved each other immensely and that love is what will help them in overcoming the hardships that life was throwing at them.

The next day, Zoya had made it her responsibility to make sure that the preparations for the haldi were done right. She wanted Humaira to have the best moments of her life in the next 2 days. She knew that it will be difficult with Razia not being there. After all, a girl needed her mother at a moment like this in her life. But, Zoya was determined to try her best. By the afternoon, the whole house glittered with yellow flowers, twisted along with golden lights. Family and friends were hustling and bustling through the house. She checked that everything was ready for the haldi rasam and left Humaira to get dressed with their cousins. Zoya walked out of the bathroom dressed in a simple white and yellow anarkali. Her hair was braided back, she has added simple golden jhumkas and just a pair of bangles on her wrist. She saw her husband resting against the window and admiring something on his phone. "Asad, aap kya dekh rahe hai?" Zoya asked. As soon as he heard her voice, he quickly put the phone away. "Kya chupa rahe hai?" she questioned. "Kuch nahi...aise hi," he told her. "Asad, aapke chehare se paata chal raha hai keh aap kuch dekh rahe the na. aapko nahi baata hai toh its fine, but please don't lie," Zoya stated sadly. She turned to leave when he stopped her, holding her elbow. "Aree naraaz mat ho. Ek minute baata tha hoon," Asad said. Zoya saw her husband shyly pull out the phone and give it to her after a few clicks on the screen. Now, she was really curious what he was seeing in there. When she looked at the screen, Zoya was astonished. It was a picture of her. That is not what shocked her, it was the fact that it was from their haldi more than a year ago. "Yeh picture aapko kaise milli?" Zoya asked confused. "Woh...actually...woh...," Asad said. Zoya chuckled, "Asad, aap toh aise react karahe hai jaise aap meri nahi kissi aur ki tasveer dekh rahe the," she teased. Asad felt his cheeks getting warm at her wife's remarks. "Asad!" she probed. "Humare haldi keh din, Najma ne bheji thi," he confessed. "What? Najma ne? woh toh meri team mein thi," Zoya complained. "Team? Matlab?" Asad said puzzled. "Aapne toh meri picture milgayi aur aap hai keh pure ek saal uss keh saath admiring game khel rahe hai, aur maine toh khabhi aapki haldi keh baare mein suna tak nahi," Zoya pouted. Asad smiled at his beautiful wife. She was such a kid! "Woh issliye kyun ki meri haldi huwi nahi thi," he clarified. "Kya? Aapne haldi nahi kiya tha?" Zoya asked surprised. Asad just nodded. "Allah miyan, what's wrong with you Mr. Khan? Akdu hai aap toh," Zoya said upset. "Zoya, iss baat koh itne din hogaye. Aabh kyun tum iss baare mein sooch rahi ho," Asad said. "Kuch nahi...chodiye. Aapna boring keh boring hi rahenga," Zoya huffed as she walked out of there, leaving a clueless Asad behind.

Asad was going to talk to Zoya but once they reached downstairs, the family arrived with the haldi. Gaffur again apologized for what had happened the day before. Dilshad and Rashid told him that they should leave behind the hurtful past, and move onto better future. Zoya had set up for the men to sit outside and converse where the ladies were inside for the haldi rasam. Humaira sat in her place, as everyone came up to her and applied the paste, and showered her with blessings. She was smiling but inside, she missed her mother. Of course, she hated what Razia had done and will probably never forgive her. But, she was her mother. How could she just forget that in one day? Zoya noticed that Humaira was getting gloomy. She came up to Humaira and cupped her face. "Humaira...main jaanti hoon keh inn sabh mein tum tumare Ammi koh miss karahi hogi. Lekin, main tume aise nahi dekh sakthi. I am sorry keh tume...," Zoya said when Humaira interrupted. "Nahi Bhaji, aap maafi kyun maang rahi hai? maafi toh shayad mujhe maangna chahiye. bachpan se aapke saath yeh sabh hota raha aur main," she said getting teary. "Nahi humi...never blame yourself for anything. Tum jaanti hoon, bachpan se iss ghar mein agar mere liye kohi tha toh sirf tum thi. Woh tum thi jisse mere ateet se ya mere Khandaan se kohi matlab nahi tha. Aur maine hamesha tume apni behen maana hai aur yeh saach khabhi nahi badlega," Zoya told Humaira. Both the sisters embraced each other, trying to find comfort. Dilshad, Nikhat, and Najma walked up to them. "Aaj itne khushi ka din hai aur tum dono aise aansoo se usse yaad rakna chathe ho?" Nikhat said. "Chalo, aabh main meri betiyon koh aise rohte huwe nahi dekh sakthi, chalo hasso," Dilshad lovingly scolded. "Ammi, mere paas yeh karne aasaan tareeka hai," Najma suggested as she looked at Nikhat naughtily. Dilshad looked at the girls questioning. Nikhat and Najma each started to tickle Zoya and Humaira, making them giggle.

After some time, Zoya was walking to the kitchen to check on food preparations when someone pulled her into one of the rooms, startling her. She was about to scream but stopped herself seeing who it was. "Mr. Khan...yeh aap kya karahe hai? You scared me," she scolded. "Sorry...par mujhe tume kuch dehna tha," he told her. "Mujhe? Kya?" Zoya asked excitedly. "Yeh," he said, bringing a small bowl in front of her. Zoya looked at the haldi he was holding and then at him confused. "Woh tumne bola tha keh tumne meri haldi nahi dehki toh," he mumbled. Zoya broke out into a huge grin. Her husband was offering her to apply haldi on him. "Yeh aap saach mein mere lagane kehliye laaye hai?" she confirmed. "Yes!" he replied casullay. "Asad, I so love you!" Zoya claimed pulling Asad into a hug. He laughed, "accha, aur agar main tume yeh haldi lagane na doon toh phir tum mujhse pyaar nahi karogi," Asad teased. "Aisa kuch nahi!" Zoya chided. "Accha chalo, jaldi se lago. Main bahut mushkil se yeh yaha isse lekar aaya hoon," Asad told her. Zoya smiled. He knew how to do the littlest things to make her happy. Even after everything that had happened, if she was standing there at that moment, it was only because of him. She always complained that Allah had taken a lot away from her but bringing him into her life, it seemed like her Allah had rewarded her for the loss. Zoya dipped her hands into the haldi and applied on both his cheeks. "You look so cute," she said. "Zoya please, you are embarrassing me," Asad said. She giggled at her husband. "Thank you Mr. Khan, aap mere liye yeh sabh. Mujhe bahut accha laaga," Zoya said. She quickly pulled out her phone and clicked his picture though he tried to stop her. Zoya heard someone call her. "Allah miyan, main toh bhul hi gayi. Mujhe Khana check karna tha," she recalled. "Sorry Asad, lekin mujhe jaana hai," Zoya said. As she was about to leave, he stopped her. "Tumne toh haldi karli, meri baari," Asad said. "Matlab?" Zoya questioned. He dipped his hand into the bowl and looked up at her. "Lekin Asad, aap toh mujhe dekha haina toh phir," she told him. "Woh toh sirf tasveer thi, I want to see you live," he whispered, coming closer and grazing her ear with his lips. Zoya felt the blush creep up her cheeks. She closed her cheeks feeling her husband rub her cheeks with the cold paste. "Mujhe...mujhe jaana chahiye," Zoya managed to speak. "Ek minute," he said, pecking her forehead. "Aabh huwi na rasam puri," Asad teased, causing her to smile. "I have to go," Zoya said and rushed out of the room, a smile plastered on both their faces.

That night, the family had planned to do Nikhat's baby shower. Initially, it was supposed to be in the Khan mansion. However, Zoya had suggested that they have it in the Siddiqui house so her and Humaira could also attend. She wasn't sure that she should leave Humaira alone. The Khan family had happily agreed. The ladies were singing and dancing as the family and guests showered Nikhat and the baby with blessings. "Agar aaj Nikhat keh ma baap hote toh kuch aur hi baat hoti," one of the aunts stated. Suddenly, everything stopped. Nikhat felt tears stung her eyes. Zoya and Najma went up to her to comfort her. "Bhabhi please, inn sabh ki baatein mat suniye. Yeh toh kuch bhi bolte hai," Zoya told Nikhat in a hushed tone. "Main theek hoon Zoya, bas aise itne dino baad kisine ehsaas dilaya hai keh mere Ammi Abu," Nikhat said tearfully. Zoya looked at Najma and she left to get Farhan. "Bhabhi...humare paas toh Ammi aur Abu dohno haina, woh dekhiye," Zoya said, pointing to Dilshad and Rashid that were standing at the end of the hallway and discussing something. Nikhat smiled through her tears. Just then, Farhan walked in with Najma. Zoya and Najma excused themselves and took the guests out for dinner. Zoya told Najma if she could take care of the guests, she had to check on something for tomorrow. As she was walking back, Zoya felt a jolting pain shoot through her abdomen. "Allah!" she almost jumped at the sudden pain. "Zoya?" Asad asked shocked. He has been walking back after finishing a work call when he heard her scream. He ran up to her and looked to see that her eyes were wet. "Kya hua?" Asad asked. "Paata nahi," she said, clutching her abdomen. "Chalo?" Asad asked, as he gathered her up into her arms and took her upstairs. "Asad, main theek hoon," Zoya said. "Bas Zoya, mujhe kuch nahi sunna! Subhe se itna kaam karahi ho, apna khayal nahi rak sakthi," Asad yelled. He turned to see her eyes closed and he knew that she was in pain. "Kuch khaya hai tumne?" he questioned taking a seat next to her on the bed. Zoya thought for a minute, "paata nahi," she honestly told her. "Really Zoya? Khabhi khabhi bahut irresponsible hojati ho tum," Asad scolded. Zoya tried to recall if she had eaten but she couldn't remember. She felt intermittent darkness flash in front of her eyes. He left the room and returned a few minutes with a plate of food. "Aabh, jaldi yeh khalo," he said. "Mujhe nahi chahiye," Zoya said, pushing the plate away. "Zoya, yeh kya bachpana hai?" Asad said confused. The next moment, tears roll down her cheeks. "Zoya? Kya hua hai? Bahut dard horaha hai? Chalo, hospital chalte hai," Asad said worried. "Nahi" she replied. "Tum roh kyun rahi ho? Kuch hua hai?" he said. Asad was confused! What was going on? "Mujhe Ammi ki yaad aarahi hai," Zoya confessed. He was taken back at her honest words. Asad didn't know what to say. Something must have happened, he thought.

Asad took her hand in his, "kya hua hai Zoya?" he asked again. "Woh neeche godh bharai mein sabh Nikhat Bhabhi keh Ammi Abu keh baare mein baat karahe the. Bas main humare bacchon keh baare mein sooch rahi thi toh Ammi ki yaad aagaye. Aaj agar woh hoti na toh," Zoya said, as more tears rolled down her cheeks. "Hey, we are not going down that road remember," he said. "Lekin Asad, humare bacche khabhi apni nani koh nahi jaan payenge," she said sadly. "Tum aisa kyun bol rahi ho? I am sure keh tumari Ammi bilkul tumari jaisi huwi hongi, ek saachi aur bahut hi himmat wali insaan," Asad said, wiping her cheeks. Zoya threw herself into his arms. "Hum humare baccho koh aur unke baccho koh bhi bahut pyaar denge, khabhi akele nahi chodenge," she said. Asad smiled. "Zoya, abhi humare bacche nahi huwe aur tum hoke humare grandchildren ki baat karahi ho," he said. "Asad, aap bas humse vaada kijiye. Mujhe aur kuch nahi sunna hai," she firmly stated. "Accha baba, vaada! Main tume aur humare baccho keh saath aur ha, unke bhi bacchon keh saath hamesha rahonga. Khush?" he asked. "I love you," Zoya replied. Asad wrapped his arm around her and pulled her closer. The way she confessed her feelings each time so innocently, filled his heart with something that he could possibly never explain. "I love you too!" Asad told her. They both stayed in each other's arms as time passed. When they broke apart, "accha, aabh tum khalo," he said. "Nahi Asad, mujhe neeche jaana chahiye. Paata nahi sabh mujhe doond rahe honge," Zoya said concerned. "Zoya, tum kahi nahi jarahi ho. Yaha baito aur chup chap Khana khao," he told her handing her the plate. Zoya nodded as she started to eat. Asad made sure that she finisnhed the whole plate and told her to rest. "Lekin Asad, " she started to speak when Asad interrupted. "Not a word Zoya, sleep!" he ordered. "Main change toh karsakthi hoon na?" she asked. "Oh...woh...theek hai jao," he said. Minutes later, Zoya changed into something more comfortable for the night. She returned to bed and fell asleep almost immediately due to exhaustion. Asad caressed her cheek lovingly. Just this afternoon, she had been so happy. And now, because of some ignorant people, she had become upset. Asad saw her sleeping calmly with her hand wrapped around her abdomen. A smile played on her lips, and he knew that she was probably feeling the kids move. "Allah...aapne Zoya par already bahut takleefye kiya hai. Bachpan se usse aise ek zindagi mili jiski woh bilkul bhi haqdaar nahi thi. Maine bahut kosish ki hai Allah keh main uske saare dukh door kardo. Lekin paata nahi kyun kohi na kohi baat ho hi jaati hai jisse meri Zoya koh dard hota hai. Par please aabh aur nahi, please Zoya koh khush rakna. Mujhe sirf meri Zoya aur humare baccho ki khushi chahiye, unne salamat rakna," Asad prayed as he bend down and kissed her cheek.

So most of you guessed it right! It was Humaira. Sorry for keeping you all waiting. With Eid and everything, I had guests over so was busy with that. This was an emotional chapter to write, looking forward to your comments 😊
