Part 1
Flashback- Gafoors thoughts and Zoya and Tanveers Childhood
The clock struck twelve, the bells were ringing in the city of Madhupar, neighborhood kids which were girls were playing hand games, Gafoor was seeing them have fun while writing in his book, he was thinking: Sometimes I pause to ponder upon the pelicular world of daughters from homes they're born into, reared and raised their ties they'll uproot, to transpant themselves elsewhere to a home she belongs, she will estrange herself and make a strange home, her own. The little buds, before our eyes will blossom of mankind. Any daughter fathers be it some rich man in faraway lands or some trader of fruits like myself here in Madhupur, all face similar fate. He was walking around on the balcony thinking more thoughts about daughters and how they will go far away from their fathers. Having a smile on his face he thinks of his daughter all said and done, daughters will always be daughters, like my Zoya; with love I nicknamed her "bitto". She is the only child of my late brother, my brother and his wife died, so they left me this unique gift. I would play with her and carry her in my arms. Zoya grew up with my daughter Tanveer, since childhood the girls loved each other, more like real siblings. But my wife Razia she never took kindly to Zoya, because in appearance Zoya is prettier than her daughter choti, which they call Tanveer since birth. Razia was putting powder on Tanveer's face to make her look pretty and Zoya was looking through the window smiling at her little sister, but Razia couldn't take it, so she got off the bed and went to the window and banged the window on her face, Zoya got scared. Zoya always thought of Razia as her mother, but the motherless child would never find a mother's love. Then I took Zoya under my wing, I would be with her and she would help me with my work, I would tell her poems and we would sing along together. I would never let her feel that she is not loved in this house. I promised her parents that I would keep her happy always.
End of Flashback
The fireworks were booming in the streets, someone in the neighborhood was getting married. A car was trying to get through the streets there were so many people crowding the place, the driver got irrated so he honked the horn, Bagat ji, who sells jewelry said "Relax! You're in the world's narrowest lane" and chuckled at his own comment, he opened the car door and decided he would walk but he saw people walking slow and then he spoke again "and this is the worlds slowest wedding procession, see you at the other end " While walking to the house a person from the procession let up a firework (rocket) and he got scared he covered his ear, but the rocket never flew up in the air, he felt relaxed and and pointed at the rocket "and this is the world dullest rocket, dull-est." As soon as he said that the rocket shooed up in the air, he almost lost his balance and his briefcase but he balanced himself and ran into the house.
He saw Gafoor's Accountant sitting on the couch reading a newspaper and he said "Asalamwalikum Munim sahib" Munim didn't see who was at the door and just said "Walaikumasalam" when he turned his head he saw bagat ji and he quickly stood up and smiled at him and "aray babgat ji app, its been years since you came to madhupar." He said, "Yes it has, Is Mr. Gafooor home?" Munim sahib said, "Yes, come in." Bagat Ji started walking with him and he said "Madhupur remained untouched, it's just the way I left it, the same narrow lanes and slow wedding processions and pervasive fear of shooting rockets." He laughed and Munim sahib said "sahi kaha app ne."
Munim called "Chotai babu, Bagat ji aye hain" Gafoor came downstairs with Razia, He saw him sitting in the family room and said "Bagat ji, why did you take the trouble, one call and I would've been in Delhi." They shook hands and bagat replied "Why, when you and your wife can come all the way to Delhi to place orders of jewelry then why cant I come to madhupur to deliever them?" Gafoor said "offcourse bagat ji, shukria ap ka." Bagat ji was taking out jewelry from his case and also speaking to Razia " When I lived here, among you folks, the time of our lives we had you should remind him more often." Gafoor smiled at his comment, he continues speaking "Bhabhi ji, how is your knee now." Razia smiled at him sincerely and said "Its improving." "A look at the jewelry and the design of the bangles will heal it completely. And I know, you've a keen eye for jewelry." Razia smiled at him while looking at the jewelry. Gafoor said "Over years, bit by bit, jewelry must be bought for the day when daughters marry." Bagat ji showed Gafoor a necklace which he took in his hand. "Giving daughters away in marriage, is said to be the most sacred act." Just than Zoya came in with a tray of water, he spoke "When a father sees his daughter standing before him, dressed in bridal finery, there is a sense of fulfillment." Just than Zoya sat the tray on the table and Gafoor took the necklace and bought it up to Zoya face and looked at Zoya like he was losing everything. He smiled a sad smile at Zoya. Zoya spoke "Assalamwalkum Bagat ji, here have some water." He blessed her and said "kush raho beti." Zoya sat down next to bagat ji and said "Gafoor sahib isn't she Zoya, your bito?" Gafoor said "Well, you've made her out, you saw her when she was so little." "I just had a feeling, that this was Zoya." Gafoor took Zoya hands and said "She's about to graduate in commerce, beside munim she takes care of my accounts." Bagat ji said "But I've toiled in vain to craft such jewelry, She is so beautiful, who will look at my jewels." Everyone laughed accept fore Razia, she looked mad she called for "Choti...Choti." But she wasn't answering her so Zoya spoke "Aunty I will get her you don't need to shout, you health will get worse." Razia couldn't take her complement so she called for her daughter.
Tanveer was in her room, she had loud music on and she was dancing on the bed, when she saw Zoya coming into her room she spoke "Jiji, what a cool song.. please join me." Zoya took her hands made her come down she started twirling with her and when she got to the table she shut off the radio. Tanveer sat down on the chair and put her legs on the table. Zoya sighed looking at her little sister "If Chachi-ji come to know you were dancing and not studying, you know what will happen right." Tanveer relaxed more she didn't care if she got in trouble she spoke "Nothing, you always save me from ammi." Zoya sat down and said "Get dressed, we have guest downstairs."
Zoya was getting Tanveer ready when Tanveer spoke "Oh God, guest come for abbu and ammi makes me do the make up drill, and before im down the guest are gone, you're far better off jiji Maa tell you nothing" Tanveer knew her mom didn't like Zoya she felt bad saying that so she said "Sorry, jiji ammi tells you nothing at all." Zoya didn't want tanveer to hate her mom or fight with her so she just ignored her comment and said "You chatter way to much to give anyone else a chance to speak... now lets go before the guest leave."
