Episode 22
"WIFE??!!"
"Asad?! What? Why? How?" asked Najma.
"When?" was all Ayaan wanted to know.
"The day after we met in the lake-house."
"What? The day she regained her memory?"
"Yes. She regained her memory after our marriage."
"You remembered to tell about her regaining her memory but forgot this?"
"It might have slipped my mind."
"Hold on a second! What are you guys talking about? Care to explain please?" asked Najma, felling more confused by the moment.
Taking a deep breath, Asad began explaining everything from the car crash to their trip to Bhopal.
"So, ammi doesn't know?" asked Najma thoughtfully.
"Yes, and we would appreciate it if neither of you told tell her."
"But, she is arranging your marriage."
"Ya, I will find the right time to tell her."
"You better. So, Zoya you don't remember what happened those two days?"
Zoya, silently shook her head before getting up, "I think I need to go use the washroom," saying so she left.
"Poor girl, she must be having a hard time," said Najma.
"Ya, you should let her drink. It will do her good," said Ayaan, casually.
Asad just cringed while Najma said, "Yes, Asad, it will do her good. Unless she is..."
Asad looked at her mouth open with shock.
"She is pregnant, isn't she?" she said in a whisper.
Asad, looked at her in horror, "How did you know?" confirming the same.
"Oh my God, does she know?"
"No."
"WHAT?" shouted both his friends, alarmed.
"Shush. Keep it down!"
Not minding if he was being rude, Ayaan asked, "Does she even know that you guys...?"
"Shut it, Ayaan. Of course, she knows..." but she froze when Asad put his head in hands, his elbows resting on the table as a sign of defeat.
Suddenly Ayaan started laughing, "Man, you are screwed!"
Ignoring Ayaan, Najma said, "She is going to find out soon, herself. You better tell Zoya."
"Tell me what?" asked Zoya as she took her place in the dining table.
Controlling his laughter, Ayaan said, "Nothing. He has a surprise for you."
Dinner went silently, with no one saying anything.

"Don't you think he will kill us?"
"They need some lone time together."
"Shush, here they come."
"Asad, Najma and I have decided to go to Delhi, from here itself."
"But, it is late. You can go tomorrow," countered Asad.
"No, we have an early assignment tomorrow."
"You should have told me earlier, I would have come in my car."
"We are really, sorry man. Maybe you should take an auto or taxi."
"Fine. I'm never stepping a foot in your car again."
"Asad..." started Ayaan, only to be stopped by Najma, "Ok Asad! See you at your wedding!"
They left before Asad's looks could kill them.

"Damn it!" said Asad as he kicked the wheel of the auto rickshaw.
"Calm down, Asad! Bhaiya, how long will it take?" asked Zoya, hugging herself in an attempt against the cold.
The auto driver was checking what was wrong with his vehicle.
"I don't know what's wrong. I will have to call the mechanic."
"Great! And we are struck in the middle of this stupid deserted road."
"Asad! Just pay him. We can walk till the main road and then may be take the bus or another auto," rubbing her hands in an attempt to make them warm.
"Fine!" annoyed and grumbling he gave some money to the driver and started following Zoya.
"Will you stop grumbling? It's your birthday for God's sake."
Asad stopped grumbling and continued walking.
After a couple of seconds, Zoya spoke up, "I'm waiting for an apology."
"Oh! Sorry for grumbling!"
Zoya stopped walking and turned to look at him, hands crossed, "No! No, no. Not for grumbling. For the way you acted at the dining table."
Asad also stopped walking, "What? For stopping you drink alcohol? No."
"Why?"
"Because...because it might affect your health."
"You told me that the results were normal. What are you hiding Asad? Give me the mobile. I want to check the results myself."
Zoya didn't miss the look of horror in his face.
"Uhm...about that. No."
"Why are you being such a jerk?" asked Zoya, as she attempted to take his mobile from his pant pocket. Asad was faster and he took it first and held it above his head.
"Give it to me!" she said jumping and trying to grab it from him as he transferred it from one hand to another. In another situation, Asad would have enjoyed their closeness in the lone deserted street, in this quiet monsoon evening.
"Oh my God! Look at that!" said Zoya pointing behind Asad. In a minute of distraction, Zoya grabbed the phone from him.
"Hai!"
By the time, Asad understood what had happened it was late. Zoya had taken the phone and ran away laughing with Asad at her heals.
Suddenly the peaceful evening was disturbed. One minute everything was fine, she was just running, ahead of Asad. As fate might have it, she didn't stop even by the crossing. Forgetting all about the school rule of "First left. Then right. Then left again," she ran across the road, totally ignorant of a car racing around the corner. Her brain barely registered what was going to happen as she heard the screeching of the car's tires. Eyes closed, she put her hands up in an attempt to protect herself from the car and the blinding light.
His world stopped as he saw the scene in front of him.
The car and Zoya were just inches apart.
First time in his life, his legs wouldn't listen to him.
Asad would have given all of his fortune to the driver of the car, for in a minuscule distance, the car halted.
Before she realized what had happened, the street around her started to spin. He saw her swaying dizzily, getting over the fact that he had almost lost her, he managed to run towards her and catch her before she fainted. Zoya grabbed his shirt with both hands and he wrapped his arms around her, supporting her.
"Zoya?"
"I...I'm fine," she replied weakly, feeling slightly nauseous. She didn't let go.
Nuzzling into her hair, he whispered, "I thought I lost you!"
"I'm sorry!"
"I'm sorry!," placing a chaste kiss on her hair.
"Romance bhad mai karna. Just get off the damn road!" scowled the car driver before he sped away, leaving a dazed Asad and Zoya.
Zoya let go and held her head in her hands.
"Are you alright?"
She shook her head, "No Asad! I'm feeling PAIN! AAAH!"
She stumbled clutching her stomach in one hand and head in another.
"ZOYA!"
He got on his knees, "Zoya...Zoya...Look at me!" he cupped her cheeks in his hands.
"ZOYA!"
"AAAH! ASAD!"
She was sweating. He started panicking. Asad looked here and there. Finding just a dabba wala at the distance, he said, "I will get you some water. Just lie down in this bench."
Zoya just nodded as she forced herself to lie down in the bench by the sidewalk.
Asad left totally forgetting that Zoya had his mobile.
"Bhaiya, give me a bottle of water."
When he came back, she was nowhere to be found.
"ZOYA!"'
He looked around frantically. The street they had come from. The street they were supposed to go through. Not finding her anywhere. He came to the bench. Feeling dejected, he slumped on the sidewalk, tears wetting the road.
