Episode 21
Taking a step closer, he leaned forward. Sliding a lock of hair behind her ear, he whispered, "I will let you know when the time comes."
Heart beating faster, she turned to look at him, her lips meeting his in the process.
For a second, Asad closed his eyes as he felt her deepen the kiss. Then as fast as it had happened, it was gone. Maybe it was her last minute realization. He will never know. He opened her eyes to find her gone.
With that one kiss, he had been 10 days away, now what? Suddenly he realized, this time it had been Zoya who had deepened the kiss. Had she fallen for him? Smiling at the thought he walked down to the dining room.

"Why Ayaan? I have never seen you not flirt with a beautiful girl before. Why have you been avoiding her?" asked Najma.
"Because she slapped me."
"Oh my God! She did. She is now going to be my best friend. Where is she?"
"Ha. Ha. Very funny."
"Seriously, it might have been your mistake."
"Yes. You know what, I'm a bit confused. That day at the lake house, I saw Asad and this girl. They were quite close."
"But aunty said he was going to marry someone else."
"I don't know. By the way, what is she even doing here?"
"Do you think we should alert aunty?"
"I don't know. I think its Asad's decision."
"I guess. But do apologize to her. I have a feeling we are going to be friends with her for a long, long time."
"Ok. Shush. Here comes, aunty."

She closed the door of the bathroom, placing a hand on her chest to slow down her heartbeat. What the hell had happened there?
She had voluntarily kissed him?!
Running her fingertips through her lips, she felt the wetness still lingering on it.
God, she was screwed!
She had not yet come to her conclusion on her thoughts about him, nor had she thought about her future.
Now what?
Deciding to talk to him about their future later, after all he didn't need tension on his birthday; she opened the door to walk towards the dining room.
*****
As fate might have it, both of them entered the dining room together. Brunch was a silent affair, except for ammi's and Ayaan's bickering.
*****
After a couple of hours,
"Chalo Asad, let's go to the disco!"
"At this hour? No, Ayaan!"
"Let's go out!"
"Where?"
"You choose!"
"Give me options."
"Movie," said Najma.
"Bowling," said Zoya.
"Ice skating," said Ayaan.
All at the same time.
Asad seemed to be giving it a thought.
Ayaan leaned over to Najma and whispered, "10 bucks he says, bowling'."
"Same thoughts. So no bet."
Finally, as if he was making a hard decision, Asad said, "Let's go bowling! The 360 degree night club is near that place. We can go there after bowling!"
"Perfect! Let's go."
"Ammi, are you coming?"
"No dear. I have to go and help Nikhat. You guys have fun."
*****
Asad reserved two lanes for the four of them for two hours. Asad hoped that Zoya would enjoy it. When they had arrived, Zoya seemed pretty excited. Each time Asad glanced at Zoya, Ayaan would nudge Najma and they would share a smirk.
"This is the best birthday ever," smiled Asad as he sat down opposite Zoya, from his turn bowling, picking up his soda can and taking a sip.
"This beats even the trip to Goa? Or the Cruise trip in the Mediterranean?" asked Ayaan, only to nudged in his stomach by Asad's elbow.
Zoya couldn't help but smile, still sipping her coke.
"Chalo Zoya! Let's have a game!" said Najma. They had become friends over the short span of the car ride from the house.
"No. I don't know how to play."
"What? But you were the one who suggested bowling!" said Najma in a shock.
"If you didn't know bowling, why did you say bowling?" asked Ayaan.
"I just like watching it. I want to play, but I never learnt it."
"Asad is an ace player. He can teach you," said Ayaan.
"Can you?" asked Zoya expectantly.
"Sure! Come on!"
"Thanks!"
"Pick up a ball!"
"Wow, it's quite heavy!"
Asad just smiled. Asad maneuvered them so Zoya stood in front of him with her back to his chest. His hand gently wrapped around her waist. Asad closed his eyes inhaling the sweet fragrance of her shampoo and on realizing that he was touching his baby, a lone tear escaped his eyes, which he brushed away quickly, He slid his hand to cover the back of Zoya's hand.
"Now, you have to keep your arm straight," he instructed, gently swinging her arm back and forth in front of the lane, "You have to get low too." Bending over gently, "Now left leg forward...," He kept his hand on her stomach, thoroughly enjoying the feeling that he was touching his baby. What he was unaware was the effect he had on Zoya. She shivered at his breath on her neck. She felt herself growing weaker to his touch. If he wasn't holding her, she would probably be on the ground now. Especially with that fuzzy feeling on her tummy where he held her.
"Now, on the count of three, I will let you go. Then take two side steps forward and bowl."
"Okay," Zoya nodded, feeling suddenly focused.
"One," they swung their arms once, "two," twice, "three!" As they swung their arms forward again, Asad let go and watched as Zoya took two steps and bowled. Zoya froze as she watched the ball roll down the alley and hit the target. As soon as she knew she scored she leapt into the air and turned a full one hundred and eighty degrees to look at Asad.
She practically ran over to him and threw her arms around his neck, hugging him tight.
"I got a strike!" She nearly shouted, still holding onto Asad, who was half way between deciding to be surprised and happy, he settled on happy.
He managed to say, "I knew you could do it!" as he gently placed his hand on her waist pulling her closer. There was that fuzzy feeling again.
Suddenly, she had pulled back when she realized everyone's eyes on them. She was back on silent mode but nevertheless looked a tad happy. Nervously she walked towards Najma.
"Ok! It's time to go to 360 degree!" announced Ayaan.
*****
As soon as Asad opened the doors, a wave of loud music hit them, urging them to merge with the crowd inside.
"Najma, care to join me?" asked Ayaan preparing to whisk her away.
"Sure, but I need a drink first."
Asad and Zoya stood there in awkward silence for a minute. Shifting their way through the people on the dance floor, Asad smiled and gave a quick wave to Ayaan indicating that they were sitting on a particular sofa.
"Do you want to dance?"
"Hm...I don't feel like. I am feeling a little dizzy with all the loud music and I'm not really a night club person."
"You should have told me. We could not have come."
"No. No. Look how happy your friends are!"
Just then Najma and Ayaan came over, "What are you doing here? Chalo na Asad. Zoya, you also come!"
"No. I will stay. Asad, you should go."
Before he could object Najma pulled him to the dance floor and Zoya called out to Ayaan, "Ayaan, I'm sorry."
"For what? There is nothing to be sorry of."
"No...I mean for the slap. You're a police officer and I should have respected it."
"No problem. Friends?"
"Friends."
"Chalo then. Let's have a dance!"
"I'm feeling a little tired. You go."
"Are you sure?"
"More than ever."
Just as Ayaan left, a not-so-handsome guy came near her, "Hey gorgeous! Dance with me! We'll have a good time!" he said winking at her. He practically made her get up and dragged her.
"Let me go!" shouted Zoya, looking around for her friends.
Before she knew it, Asad was standing beside her, his arm wrapped around her waist, immediately the fuzzy feeling was back. Why was he targeting her waist today?
"She doesn't want to dance with you. Let her go!" said Asad in a voice dangerously low. The guy just grabbed her hand and attempted to drag her away from Asad's grasp.
"Trust me. You will have a nice time with me!"
"Please let me go," she said politely. His grip tightened.
"I said. Dance. With. Me." That was the last straw. Asad pushed Zoya behind him and put a hand on the guy's arm twisting it behind his back, squeezing it extremely tight. The guy winced in pain.
"That will teach you never to mess with any girl!" He finally released his grip and the guy left holding his arm in pain.
"Are you alright?" he asked turning to Zoya. She simply nodded.
"Hey, are you okay? We saw some creep with you," said Ayaan when Najma and he reached them.
Looking how dazed she was, Asad said, "I think we should leave."
"No. No. It's fine!"
"No Zoya. Asad is right. Let's just go home," said Najma, realizing Asad wasn't going to stay anyway.
"No. Let's just stay here and have dinner. Then we can go. Ok? I'm fine."
"Are you sure?"
"Trust me, I am."
Once they were all seated, Asad ushered a waiter towards their table.
"You guys order, I will just be back."
"What should we order for you?" asked Zoya, holding his hand.
"The usual. Ayaan knows."
"Ok!" hesitantly letting go off his hand.
*****
When he came back, the food was already in the table.
"Where did you go?" asked Zoya.
"I was just in the washroom," replied Asad.
"Well, you should have told us before you left. We were worried."
"What is there to be worried?"
"I was worried that that guy came back with thugs."
"You have been watching a lot of action movies."
"Yes, well you..."
Najma and Ayaan looked from Asad to Zoya and back to Asad and back to...well, you get the point.
"Just stop it you two!" Ayaan could not take it anymore.
"Ya! You are acting like a married couple, for God's sake! Chill!" added Najma
Both of them looked away in embarrassment.
"Here Cheers!" said Ayaan holding up his glass of whiskey. Najma and Zoya held up their glasses of wine. The three of them turned to look at Asad who didn't take up his glass; instead he turned to look at Zoya and asked, "What do you think you are doing?"
"What?"
"You can't drink wine."
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me. You are not drinking today." He leaned forward to grab her glass from her hand.
But she held on to it, "I'm sorry but I'm drinking today."
"No. You are not."
"I know Najma drinks with you. So you are not new to seeing a girl drink."
"I know. But you are not drinking today," making a failed attempt to grab the glass again.
"Why not Asad? Give me one good reason."
Because you are pregnant. What better reason do you want?
"Because I say so."
At this point, Zoya lost her temper and before she could control herself she said it, "You are such a hypocrite, Asad! Your friend, who is a girl, can drink! But your wife can't?"
Asad closed his eyes at the slip while Zoya slammed her hand to her mouth, eyes wide open.
"WIFE??!!"
(To end soon)
