PART 2:

After 3 days in Pune, Asad headed to Goa. He loved driving so he decided to drive all the way to Goa and while driving he wondered where he should stay in Goa. Although he liked Goa and its numerous beaches, he did not like some areas and beaches because of the kind of crowd that frequented those places. And after thinking a lot Asad finally decided to stay at a place close to the Caranzalem Beach. It was close to where the girl who wrote that letter 12 years back lived and Asad had this sudden urge to visit her house once again. And in addition to that from his search Asad knew that Caranzalem Beach was still a relatively undiscovered beach with fewer crowds and Asad preferred the solitude and peace of a beach more than the partying and fun.

When Asad reached the hotel he was staying it was mid afternoon and the weather was hot and humid. Nevertheless he did not feel like staying inside and after checking in he immediately left the hotel and walked the short distance to the beach and spent the rest of the afternoon in the beach till the sunset. And that night he did not feel like going out and had an early night and a restful sleep after ages.

Next morning he woke up early and once again went to the beach to watch the sunset and had breakfast at a shack on the beach. And that afternoon he drove to Panaji. Although he had visited Panaji earlier also he had not really seen the city and he wanted to do it during this visit. He drove throughout the city and visited the famous places like the church of Mary Immaculate. He loved the architecture of some of the buildings which still had the Portuguese inheritance and touch. And in the evening he dined at a local famous restaurant which offered traditional Goan cuisine including the famous Goan Fish curry.

And next day was Asad's last day there and he had not still visited the house of Zoya. He woke up late next morning but he did not mind it because once again he had a blissful sleep and felt well rested when he got up in the morning. He lazed around the hotel that morning and in the afternoon he drove to the area where Zoya's house was situated. It was few kilometers from Caranzalem Beach and few kilometers from the city of Panaji as well. But the area was quite well developed and Asad could imagine teenage Zoya staying in that house and enjoying the quiet beach not far from her house and going to school in the city of Panaji, perhaps taking a bus.

Asad parked his car at a main road not far from her house and walked through the narrow street that led to her house. And as he walked he wondered why he was doing this crazy thing. But then he felt that if he could meet Zoya she would understand why he had this urge to meet her, just like she wrote in her letter that she knew that the person who found that letter would understand why she did such a crazy thing as writing that letter and throwing it to the sea.

But when Asad finally reached her house he was disappointed to see that it was again locked. Through the outside gate which was locked, he could see that the front door of the house was locked as well. Sighing dejectedly he wondered what to do and where Zoya could be and whether he would ever meet her in his life.

Not knowing what to do Asad started walking towards the beach near Zoya's house. In his previous visit to the house he had not gone there and now he felt like doing it. And when he walked up to the beach he could see that it was almost deserted except for a few fishermen who had come back from fishing and were tying their boats. The beach was not big in the sense the sandy area stretched only for about half a kilometer and beyond it the beach was rocky. Nevertheless the beach was secluded and beautiful and Asad felt like sitting there the rest of the afternoon enjoying the peace.

It was close to 5 Pm when Asad reached there and soon the sun set and Asad saw that the sunset from there was even more beautiful than it was from Caranzalem Beach. And after the sunset, Asad still sat there watching the changing colours over the horizon after the sunset. But after a while thinking that it was perhaps time he went, he was about to get up from the place where he was sitting when he noticed something. Some people had come to the beach to watch the sunset and it was no longer deserted. But still it wasn't crowded and most of the people who had come looked like local residents and majority were couples sitting together and enjoying each other's company. And as Asad gazed at them he noticed something else that arrested his gaze. It was a young woman who was walking along the beach and coming towards his direction. She was walking along the edge and as she walked, the waves came intermittently and gently lapped at her bare feet as if kissing them and then retreated back into the sea. She was wearing a white maxi dress that swirled around her ankles gently as she walked and her sandals hung from her left hand. And with her right hand she tried to hold back the strands of her long auburn hair that swayed with the wind and disturbed her face. And in the evening twilight, the girl walking towards him made such a beautiful picture that Asad could not help in staring at her and he continued to stare at her even when she reached close to where he was sitting. And then he was jerked from his trance when the girl suddenly tripped on a stone and fell just in front of him. Asad got up and went to her quickly.

"Are you alright?" Asad knelt beside her and asked her with concern.

"Umm yea." The girl whispered. Her head was bent and Asad could not see her face well and she was rubbing her big toe and wincing in pain even though she said she was alright.

"Looks like you hurt your toe... why don't you come and sit over there and see it properly." Asad held out his hand towards her to help her get up and it was then that she finally looked up at him. And when their eyes met they both froze. Asad could not believe it, it was the same woman about whom he had been thinking few days back - the woman who kept crossing his path and whose face crossed his mind every time he thought of marriage.

They sat lost in each other's eyes and Asad could see that the woman had recognized him as well and she was gazing at him as if she had thousand questions in her eyes. And it was she who lowered her gaze first and when she did, Asad came back to his senses and reached out to hold her hand gently. He helped her to get up and made her walk up to the spot of dry sand on which he was sitting earlier. She lowered herself down and sat on the sand and then let go of his hand and Asad was surprised to realize that he wanted to continue holding her hand. He sighed and moved a little away from her and sat down again and she bent forward and looked at her toe with a frown on her face and then she reached out and gently touched her toe and when she did she could not help in wincing again.

"Looks like you have really hurt your toe... I guess you should put some ice on it... otherwise it may become bad. Is there any place where we can get ice here? I can go and get it for you." Asad was full of concern.

"I think it can be found in some shops up on the road there... but it's alright... I can walk there after a while... I don't want to burden you."

"It's not a burden... sit right there... I will just come back." Asad said and walked away. And to their luck Asad found a small roadside shop which sold fresh juices and he managed to get some ice from them. He walked back with the bag and when he saw her still sitting there he sighed with relief. He went and gave the bag to her and she put it on her toe. They then sat silently both feeling awkward not knowing what to say and how to start a conversation. It was like they were both strangers to each other yet knew each other.

"Umm do you remember that we have met before?" to Asad's surprise it was the girl who finally broke the ice.

"Yea how can I forget... I mean I do remember... and I don't know whether you would remember but it wasn't only once that we have met." Asad said carefully.

"Even I do remember... we have met several times." Saying it she looked at Asad and gave a shy smile.

"So we are not strangers right?" Asad smiled back at her.

"Yea I guess we are not." She said and laughed and to Asad her laughter was the most mesmerizing thing he had heard. And he laughed along with her.

"Since we are not really strangers, I think we should know each other's name. I'm Asad." Asad smiled and held out his hand towards her.

"And I'm Zoe." She said and shook his hand and gave him a shy smile again. And Asad found that too endearing because he knew that she was a Doctor and quite a confident young professional woman. He had seen that side of her and now he was seeing this shy and subdued side of her and he suddenly wondered whether her shyness towards him was because she felt something towards him as well. He looked at her from the corner of his eyes and she gazed at him just that moment and then they abruptly looked away once again. And silence ensued between them once again.

"What are you doing here away from Mumbai?... holiday?" it was Zoe who once again broke the silence.

"Yea I just felt like taking a break from everything that is Mumbai... I think you know what I mean."Asad smiled sheepishly.

"Yea I do... Mumbai offers us so much but then it does get on our nerves as well." she returned his smile.

"It definitely does... especially in my profession." Asad agreed.

"Oh... what do you do?" Zoe looked at him with interest.

"I am a criminal lawyer... And as a result most of the times I get to see only the worst side of the city." Asad said sadly.

"I know what you would be facing daily as a lawyer... it must be tough." She looked at him with admiration.

"Sometimes it really is... Do you remember the second time I met you?... at the hospital?... that boy and his mom were one of my clients."

"Oh that must have been really horrible for you to see that child in that condition... you were trying to save his life and change his circumstances and he tried to commit suicide."

"Yea it was terrible... but thanks to you we could save his life... actually I had wanted to thank you after that but I could not find you."

"Please no need to thank me... it's my responsibility to do that... actually I was on a rotation and that was my last day of posting in that hospital... that's the reason why you couldn't find me." She smiled at him.

"Oh I see...And how about you? Why have you come here?" Asad looked at her keenly.

"I also wanted to escape from Mumbai for a while... but then Goa is also my home and I used to live here till I started going to college."

"That's nice... to belong to a beautiful place such as this." Asad said and Zoe nodded.

They lapsed in to a companionable silence once again but Asad stole glances at her wondering what she was thinking. It had by then become quite dark and Asad could not even see her face too clearly.

"I guess I should go now." She whispered and Asad panicked. He did not want her to go so soon and he did not want to loose her once again, but he did not know anything to say to stop her.

"How's your toe? Will you be able to walk?...you may injure it more by walking" he finally asked trying not to sound desperate.

"It's good... I don't feel any pain now and I don't think there is anything like a fracture to get worried... anyway once I reach Mumbai tomorrow I will take an X -ray just to see." She said with a smile.

"Oh I forgot that you are a doctor." Asad laughed sheepishly and Zoe smiled at him. She then got up to go forcing Asad to get up as well. They gazed at each other and stood smiling at each other and it felt as if neither wanted to leave.

"Umm Asad, it's really nice meeting you here... and thanks for the help and the ice." Zoe whispered.

"You are welcome... and the feeling is mutual... it's nice meeting you too Zoe." Asad said softly.

"Bye then." Zoe said and turned to walk away.

"Bye." Asad whispered and stood staring at her retreating back. He wanted to shout to her to stop, he wanted to run to her and ask her if he could meet her again and he wanted to know where she lived in Mumbai but he could not do any of it, and he just stood there wondering sadly whether she would cross his path once again or not.

And finally when she completely disappeared from his sight, he started walking towards the direction from which he came earlier noting that she went in the same direction. But when he reached the road leading to Zoya's house he no longer felt like going in that direction. He could not think of meeting Zoya when his thoughts were so much occupied by Zoe. So he took another road to walk towards the main road where his car was parked.

When Asad reached his hotel it was past 8 o'clock and he went and had a lonely dinner at the hotel's restaurant; his thoughts were all occupied by Zoe. And after dinner he went to his room and thought of packing. He was planning to leave early next morning. But even while packing, he was still thinking of Zoe. He cursed himself for letting such a good opportunity go away. But then he suddenly stopped what he was doing, sat on his bed and wondered why he wanted to keep in touch with Zoe so badly. What did he want with her? what was it that he was feeling towards her? And why did he want to know her phone number and her address? He questioned himself regarding all his feelings but he could not give a name to his feelings regarding this woman. But he knew one thing for sure and that was she meant something to him. She had affected him each time he had met her and today his feelings had overpowered him and he wanted to know her more.

And he wondered where she was right that moment and how he could meet her again. He felt sad thinking he may never meet her again but then he smiled thinking of their meeting that evening. He had never had a moment like that with any other woman and he wished that moment lasted longer and he was able to get to know her more. But then he cherished the little he came to know about her. He was happy that he at least knew her name as well. Zoe, he thought that her name was as beautiful as her. And then he thought more about her name and realized that Zoe cannot be her full name. He thought of all the names he knew that started with a Z and then the name Zoya came to his mind and suddenly he was gripped with a feeling he could not define at all.

Could it be Zoya and could it be the same Zoya who had written a letter to him so long ago when she was a teenager. Well, she hasn't exactly written it to him but she had hoped that someone would receive it and he was the one who got it. And today he had gone to that beach area in search of Zoya and he had not found her but he had met Zoe. Was it just a coincidence? Asad somehow now felt that it wasn't. He remembered Zoe telling him that she grew up there and that it was also her home.

Asad was suddenly almost sure that this woman Zoe who had kept crossing his path was the same one who wrote that letter as a teenager. Asad was sure of it and his heart told him that it was true but at the same time he was afraid to believe it. He was afraid to believe that destiny could connect him with a woman in this way since so many years. He was a practical man who had never believed in such things as destiny and his rational mind did not want to believe it even now; but his heart told him that Zoe was Zoya and that he was meant to meet her and find her in his life. And may be fall in love with her just like she had hoped to fall in love with someone some day. And with that thought he could finally give a name to the feelings that Zoe evoked in him. He finally accepted that it was love, he had fallen in love with Zoe a little each time he had met her and today he was sure of it. She was the woman whom Allah had created for him and she was his destiny.

Asad suddenly wanted to go and see Zoe. He wanted to go to Zoya's house and confirm that Zoe was indeed Zoya. He took his keys and was about to leave the room when he realized that it was almost 10pm in the night and not right to go and disturb her at that time of the night. And with a heavy heart he kept his key back, changed his clothes, lay on his bed and tried to sleep still thinking of Zoe. And as he fell asleep he had a smile on his face thinking of going and meeting her the next day.

Next morning Asad woke up at eight and without even having breakfast he checked out of the hotel. He put his bag in the trunk of his car and with his heart beating erratically he drove towards Zoya's house. He did not know what he would tell her and how he would ask her if she was Zoya. But then he realized that if he saw Zoe at that house then surly she was Zoya and he need not even ask her.

Asad parked the car at the same spot he parked on previous day and walked up to Zoya's house nervously. When he reached the house he saw that it was once again locked from outside and it did not look as if anyone was even living there. And Asad wondered if he had read too much into the situation and concluded that Zoe was Zoya because his heart wanted the two women to be the same. May be it was just a coincidence that he met Zoe in the same beach where Zoya used to spend her childhood and teenage days. And Asad suddenly felt very frustrated at not knowing the truth. He did not why but in his heart he still felt that it was Zoya whom he met previous day.

And then suddenly he remembered their conversation and remembered Zoe telling him that she would get her toe X-rayed when she reached Mumbai next day. That meant that she had planned to leave that day and Asad had almost forgotten about it. But remembering it then he realized that Zoe could have left very early that morning just like he had initially planned to do himself. And realizing that there was anyway nothing he could do by staying back in Goa, Asad headed to drive back to Mumbai.
