EPILOGUE:
It was one of those rare chilly days of December in Mumbai and hugging her jacket close to her body, Zoya walked nervously up to the hospital Laboratory. It was not the first time she had gone there; she had been to the Laboratory on several occasions, either to collect reports of patients they needed urgently or to discuss a report with a pathologist. But she had never felt any nervousness at any of those times, but today she was so nervous that her heart was beating at an unusual pace and her steps faltered.
"Hi... I came to collect a report." She greeted the staff at the reception counter.
"May I know your name please?" the staff was new and did not recognize her as a Doctor working there.
"Dr. Zoya Asad Ahmed Khan." She said softly and gave her Hospital Identity card to the staff. She smiled, more to herself than the staff, closed her eyes and took in a deep breath. It had been a year since she and Asad had gotten married, but even now every time she said her name joined to Asad's name, warmth and a feeling of contentment would engulf her and each time she never failed to acknowledge and thank Allah for the fact that she got the love of such a wonderful man like Asad and was married to him. And even at times like these the mere thought of him being in her life calmed her.
"Just a moment Ma'am... I will see if you report is ready or not." The girl left leaving Zoya to her own thoughts. But the girl returned back sooner than she thought.
"Dr. Zoya... here is your report." The girl smiled and handed her an envelope and Zoya clutched it feeling nervous once again.
"Thanks." She whispered and started walking towards the hospital parking area where her car was parked. It was 9 pm in the evening and she had just finished her duty. And the whole afternoon while on duty also she had been thinking of this report and what would be there in it. She wanted to open the envelope and see it as soon as the girl at the reception gave it to her, but she was scared. Scared to see it and face it.
She climbed into her car, closed the door and rested her forehead on the steering wheel and sighed. After few seconds she lifted her head and stared at the envelope in her hand. She knew she had to open it and see it. She wanted to know what the result in it showed before she went home and faced Asad.
With slightly shaking hands she tore the edge of the envelope and took out the report and opened it.
Serum pregnancy test - Positive. The report said.
She stared at the word Positive, closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. In her heart she knew that it would be Positive but still she was not prepared for it. And Zoya herself would not be able to define or describe the feelings that engulfed her at that moment. She was happy that she was pregnant with Asad's child and carrying the symbol of their love and going to be a mother; but on the other hand she was scared and apprehensive, because this pregnancy was not planned and neither she nor Asad was prepared for it. She held her face in the palm of her hands and rubbed her forehead with her fingertips in an attempt to release the tension that had slowly enveloped her.
And then after taking a calming breath, she started the car. But instead of going home, she drove towards the beach. She needed a moment alone before she faced Asad and broke the news to him.
She sat on the beach and thought of how this was going to change Asad and her life. And she wondered how she could deal with it; they were not at all prepared to have a child and getting pregnant right then would lead to so many complications in their life.
They got married a year back, exactly three months after they met at Asad's apartment and confessed their feelings towards each other. They did not want to wait longer as they both were so sure of each other from the first day itself. Their Nikah was a simple affair and since they did not have many relatives, only few relatives and friends attended the wedding. And they wanted to have it in Goa, the place which brought them together and that was another reason why not many people could attend the wedding. But they did not mind it because what they really wanted was a private thing with the blessings of few close people who really mattered to them. And Asad's Daadi was the happiest that day, but even Zoya's Daadi was not behind.
After the Nikah they stayed in Goa for another 5 days. Asad had wanted to take her to Europe for their honeymoon but he was involved with an important case even during that time and the only thing they could manage was those 5 days in Goa. Zoya did not mind it, she was just happy they were married and she was with him. She had quit her job a week prior to wedding; she wanted to settle down with Asad and spend as much time as possible with him during the initial days of their married life. She knew that Asad being so busy all the time, and if she also worked, they would hardly be able to make any time for themselves. But the main reason why she quit was she wanted to start studying for PG Entrance exam. It was her dream to do PG in Paediatrics and she wanted to pass the Exam in the first attempt with flying colours. Asad supported her in her decision.
And by about 3 months she was well settled in her new life as wife of Asad and she cherished every moment of those days. Asad was busy most of the days but he made sure that he came home early and ever since they got married, the weekends were strictly no working days for him. And they spent those days doing things like going to movies, long drives followed by dinner at a good restaurant. And during weekdays when Asad was at office or court, she spent most of the time studying, but she would take a break in between and do some household chores like washing their clothes and cooking.
Days had passed by blissfully and another 5 months passed and Zoya's Entrance Exam date drew near.
And it was during one of those days that Asad revealed to her something about which he had been thinking for a while. During those days she was a bit tensed as her exam was near, and that day Asad came home early, took her out on a drive and when they came back he started preparing dinner and sent her off to study again. But after dinner he did not allow her to study saying that she needed to relax more and that she had studied enough for the day. And they watched a movie lying together on the living room sofa. And even after the movie got over, neither of them felt like getting up and snuggled into each other, they continued to lay there.
"Zoe, there is something about which I want to discuss with you." Asad told her after a while and he sounded very serious and sort of unsure of himself. He was always so confident and it was very unlike him to be unsure of anything and Zoya lifted her face from his chest and looked at him carefully.
"What is it Love?... please tell me."
"I... I'm thinking of a career change."
"What do you mean?" Zoya asked confusedly.
"I mean leave practicing as a Lawyer and do something else."
"But why?...you love what you do and you are so passionate about it.. so why are you thinking this way?"
"I'm thinking of our future Zoe... ours and our kids' future... I love being a Lawyer and as you said I'm very passionate about it... but I have to think beyond me isn't it?... as you know, many times the cases I deal with involve hardcore criminals and its dangerous... so far nothing has happened and I'm lucky... but what if someone I punish decides to take revenge and does something?"
"So what do you have in mind doing?"
"Zoe, my parents were quite well off and when they passed away they left me quite a huge fortune actually... and after I finished college, I discussed things with the Bank and I had invested a part of it in some investments... and they get a good return and the money is safe and increasing as well... but I'm thinking maybe I should use the money and start doing business...it was after all my Abbu's dream as well, for me to run his business when I grew up... but after their death, I became too disturbed and ultimately I became a Lawyer... but now thinking of you and our own kids and their future, I think it's best to do this... and before going into business, I thought I will also study part time and do a MBA."
"I'm so happy to know that you are thinking this way... I never told you this earlier, but I do get scared at times because of the kind of cases you take up... But still, I don't want you to stop doing something that you love doing just because you are scared for me and for our future kids... so please think about it more OK." Zoya caressed his jaw lovingly.
"I have thought about it a lot Zoe...and I felt that it's the best thing to do but I wasn't completely sure till I voiced it out in front of you... but now, I'm very sure that it's what I want to do... and it's not only the danger involved by being a lawyer that I'm thinking about... I want to give you and my kids every comfort in the world... and as you know the money that I earn as a Lawyer is peanuts." He smiled.
"That's because you are so nice and generous and most of the time you take up cases on behalf of the poor and needy who cannot pay you anything... but I don't mind that and I love you for that and I'm happy with whatever you earn as a Lawyer as well and I'm sure even our kids would be happy... it's not only money and material wealth that makes a family happy isn't it?... and our children will be happy Asad, because we would give them so much love."
"Yea I know that and what you are saying is also true... but still I don't want to take any more risks now... Not only risks with my life, but risks with earning as well... I want to earn enough to secure our future Zoe."
"If you are absolutely sure of this then go ahead with it... but right now we are not even having with us any of those kids about whom we have been talking so passionately." She laughed.
"Yea but we are going to isn't it?"
"Definitely... when we are more settled..."
"Yea... soon after your PG and my MBA, we will have our first baby if that's alright with you."
"It is... I don't want to wait too long also." she whispered, rested her head on his chest once again and sighed peacefully.
And that was how they had planned their future. Zoya gave her exam few weeks later and when the result came, she had passed with a very good percentage and she was planning to join the Medical College in few months time. And Asad had planned to start his MBA soon after she joined the College, and they were not at all prepared for this pregnancy.
And they had been taking precautions. She had started taking Pills soon after their marriage but after few months she started gaining weight. And she got so worried about it that Asad told her to stop it and he told her that they would take precaution in other ways and they had been careful.
And so she could even remember the exact time and how she had gotten pregnant. Few weeks back, they had been to Goa once again. Asad was in the middle of another important case and he was stressed and they had hardly even spent any time together for almost two weeks. His case was still going on but she managed to convince him and pulled him off to Goa for the weekend as she knew it would relax him.
And during that weekend they just let go and had fun and enjoyed being together. And on their last night there, they got carried away and made love without any protection. And it was the time of the month when she had her ovulation but neither of them remembered. Usually even if she forgot, Asad would remember to ask and confirm it and would always use protection during those days. But that night even he did not remember and it was only when she missed her periods that she recalled the night and remembered it.
Zoya came out of her thoughts and sighed sadly and looked at the time. It was past ten pm. She still did not know what she should do now, but she knew that she should go home. Asad would start panicking if she did not reach home soon.
When she entered the house it was all quiet and as she walked inside she could see that the dining table was laid out for dinner and she smiled. After her exam got over, she had again started working at the hospital, and Asad always cooked dinner whenever she had afternoon shift at hospital. And when she came home, a delicious dinner would be awaiting for her. And true to his word on the first night they met here, he knew how to cook really well; in fact he was a better cook than her and he always loved pampering her including cooking for her.
She wondered where he could be and then she knew. She walked upstairs to his Library and stood at the doorway staring at his back lovingly. As usual he was sitting at his desk reading while waiting for her to come home. She walked up to him slowly, stood behind him and draped her arms around his neck. He tilted his head back and rested it on her chest.
"Was just thinking that you are late... what happened?... an emergency?" he asked softly. She often became late due to some emergency that happened at the hospital while she was about to leave.
"Umm no... not an emergency... just some work." She evaded the question and smiled a little. He looked a little tired and she caressed his cheek and jaw with the back of her knuckles. And then she moved her hands over his jaw, down his neck and laced her fingers over the back of his neck while her thumbs were pressed to the side of his neck, keeping his neck straight. And keeping that position, with her other fingers, she started messaging the tense muscles of his neck and when she felt him relax under her touch she moved her hands down over his shoulders and pressed the muscles there and he sighed in bliss. It was something she often did for him and he loved it when she did it for him.
"Shall we have dinner now?" he asked her after a while.
And after dinner she went upstairs to take a bath and Asad sorted out the dishes.
And when he came to the bedroom, she was standing in front of the mirror combing her hair, wearing his favourite night dress - a pink short with lace trimming on its hem and a matching pink Cami with lace over the bust area. The dress made her look both sexy and cute at the same time and what Asad loved most was the way it revealed and enhanced her beautiful toned legs. He always wondered how she had such a perfect figure without doing any exercise or even dieting. Despite being petite, her well shaped thighs and legs look sexier than that of a model and she had curves where it was needed, and despite being married for a year, every time he saw her this way it still never failed to ignite a fire in him.
And with a mischievous grin on his face he walked up to her and draped his arms around her waist.
"Hmm... you smell good." He whispered while nuzzling her neck from behind. Then he pulled her even closer to him with one hand and kissed her on her shoulder close to the strap of her Camisole while playing with the strap on the other side. But he did not get the response he expected from her and she stood stiffly in his embrace. Usually she would have melted in his embrace by now.
Asad stared at her through the mirror to see that she looked tense and she was lost somewhere.
He turned her around gently, held her hands and pulled her towards the bed and made her sit on it. And still holding her hands he kneeled in front of her on the floor.
"What happened?" he gazed at her eyes searchingly. She was unusually quiet and lost in some thoughts even during dinner and he knew for sure that something major had happened and it was disturbing her. He knew her too well not to notice even a slight change in her. And she gazed back at him and let out a long held breath.
"Asad I'm pregnant." She whispered and looked at him with tear filled eyes and at the same time she gave him a tiny smile.
"Pregnant?..." Asad's voice trailed off.
"Are you sure Zoe?... when?... how?... I mean how do you know?"
"It's been two weeks since I missed my period and I kind of knew it even though I'm not having any symptoms of pregnancy... and I was scared to even check and confirm it but today I finally went and did the test... and.. and it's positive Asad." She whispered the last part brokenly and a drop of tear escaped her eyes.
"Hey..." Asad got up from the floor, sat near her on the bed and gathered her in his arms. And she buried her face in his neck and held onto him tightly and cried.
"What will we do Asad?" she whispered after sometime.
"Sweetheart, we will face it together... and we will manage somehow." He tilted her chin and made her look at him.
"But what about our dreams and everything we had planned to do before we started a family?... what about our studies?... you had wanted to do a MBA and get into business and I wanted to finish PG before we had a baby... And how will we manage all that now?" she questioned tearfully.
Asad held her tightly and they sat silently thinking of all that.
"We will manage Zoe... you can still go to college even though you are pregnant isn't it?... and I will also mange somehow... I know that this is so unexpected and even I'm not at all prepared for this... but now that it happened we have to somehow manage... isn't it Sweetheart?" he spoke to her after thinking for a while.
"But how Asad?... it won't be easy...if I go to college, how will we look after the baby after delivery?... we have just the two of us Asad... we don't even have a mother who will help us with the baby and our Daadi's are now too old to do it... I think I will have to delay joining the college." She lifted her head and looked at Asad with worry.
"I also know that it's just the two of us... but we will figure out something and we will manage when the time comes... don't think about it too much now and don't get tensed... it won't be good for the baby also isn't it?...and you need not sacrifice going to college because of the baby...I think you should still go... but I will support you in whatever decision you take ... and I assure you that we will manage everything somehow... you have faith in me isn't it?" he looked at her with a smile and she nodded.
"I love you so much." She finally smiled.
"I love you too Sweetheart... and I can't believe that you are pregnant... you are pregnant with our baby!... a baby we created together... can you imagine that?" he said excitedly and she laughed.
And she felt a little sad again because this was not the way she had dreamt of revealing about her pregnancy to him when that ultimately happened. Just like any other woman she had also had day dreams about being pregnant and she had dreamt that she would give a really lovely surprise to Asad with perhaps a candle lit dinner followed by the news. But instead she had broken the news in this gloomy way without any excitement and then she had even cried. But seeing Asad getting excited, she started feeling happy.
After a while, Asad got up from the bed and knelt in front of her once again. He then lifted her top up, pulled her short a little lower and caressed her tummy reverently, all the while gazing at her eyes lovingly.
And then he bent his head down and gave a soft kiss on her tummy just below her navel while his hands rested on her hips and his fingertips stroked the soft skin above her hip bone. He then pressed his face more onto her tummy, inhaled her scent, sighed and he could not help in nibbling the skin near her navel. And the sensation of his stubble pricking on her soft tender skin along with the feeling of his lips on her skin and the sensation that he simultaneously evoked when he stroked her hips sent tingles down her spine and Zoya's breathing hitched. And Asad did not know how, but the thought of his baby growing inside her evoked in him some new and unknown feelings for her; feelings that reached a new level and increased his desire for her tenfold.
"Zoe.." he whispered hoarsely, picked her up in his arms and put her on the bed gently and lay besides her.
He bent down and kissed her lips tenderly while his hand roamed under her top and the moment his hand touched the underside of her breast Zoya groaned and deepened the kiss and Asad responded with equal fervor. They broke apart breathing heavily and Asad tugged at the hem of her top and she lifted herself up and allowed him to remove it in one swift movement. Then he made her lie down once again and his lips, fingers and eyes worshiped her body and their feelings for each other reached a new level
"Umm Zoe... can we?... I mean is it ok?... the baby... it won't harm the baby right?" he lifted himself up and asked her raggedly realizing that he could not control himself any longer.
"It won't..."
"Are you sure?" he stared at her face with a worried and unconvincing look.
"I'm sure... unless there are some complications which I'm sure I don't have, it's perfectly alright to have intercourse during pregnancy." Seeing the unconvinced look on his face, she explained to him clinically and then grinned at him.
"Alright Doc." He grinned back at her and then captured her lips once again. And their love making that night gave them a new kind and level of satisfaction.
Afterwards they lay together in each other's arms, and Zoya felt content, peaceful and loved. And she was finally happy and relieved and felt as if a huge burden had been lifted from her. Asad's encouragement and his caring always made her feel safe and protected and even now his understanding and his reassurance regarding the baby had made her fears disappear. And finally without any fear or apprehension she was able to think of her pregnancy happily and she had already started anticipating the day when she could hold her tiny baby in her arms.
"What are you thinking?... and what's making you smile so contentedly hmm?" she heard Asad's voice and looked at him. She did not realize that he had propped himself up and had been looking at her for a while.
"I was just thinking of the day when I could hold the baby in my arms... nine months Asad... after nine months we will be having a baby... our baby and we will be a mother and a father... can you imagine?" she smiled at him.
"Yea I can." He bent down and pecked her lips while his hand caressed her tummy tenderly once again.
"Umm Zoe... how will the baby be right now?... I mean how big?"
"Big?.. Asad its tiny right now... may be just a cm or little more." she smiled.
"Oh... but will it have hands and feet?... will it be moving?"
"Hands and feet no Asad... it's just 6 weeks... it's heart would have formed but we may not even see the heartbeat on scan right now... and heart is the first organ to form... all the limbs and hands and feet etc would have started to form but it will be distinguishable only later at around 9 to 10 weeks."
"Oh... and how would it look like right now?
"Right now?... I don't know how to describe also... may be let's say, like a clot of blood."
"That's so amazing isn't it... how something like a clot of blood changes and forms in to a human being, which is so tiny at first and then grows big inside you."
"Yea it really is." Zoya smiled at him and then yawned. It was a long and emotional day for her and she had finally started to feel sleepy. She turned to her side and Asad moved closer and draped one arm around her pulling her to him so that her back was pressed to his chest and her head rested in the crook of his arm. That was their usual sleeping position and Zoya always felt protected and loved even in her sleep.
"Umm Zoe?... how does the baby gets attached to your uterus?" She heard Asad say while she was just drifting off to sleep.
"There is something like a kind of lining inside the uterus and right now the baby will be beneath it and as the baby grows it kind of detaches from there and occupies the space inside the uterus... and later it will be connected to the placenta only, through its umbilical cord" she explained sleepily and then smiled and turned around and looked at him indulgently.
"What?" Asad furrowed his eyebrows seeing the way she was still smiling at him.
"Only you and your analytical mind would ask all these questions, my Darling Lawyer husband."
"It's not being analytical my Darling wife... I'm not obviously a Doctor and I don't know how a baby would be at this stage of life... so I was curious that's all." Asad said and nuzzled her neck tickling her with his stubble.
"Asad!.." She whined. "Let me sleep now OK." She smiled and turned to the other side once again and closed her eyes.
"Zoe..."
"Hmm"
"Don't worry and think too much... everything will be fine... do whatever your heart desires, then the rest will automatically fall into place... I mean both regarding your studies and regarding our future... and remember that I will always be there for you and support you in whatever decision you take."
One year later...
Zoya was in the kitchen preparing dinner, humming a song. She was happy because Asad had gone on a trip to Delhi for a few days regarding a case and he would be arriving back that night. And she wanted to make something special for him that night. She was half way through her preparation when the baby monitor she had kept on the table beeped. And she left everything and rushed to their room. And there in the crib lay her 3 month old daughter Zara, kicking her chubby little hands and feet towards the toys dangling from the canopy. And she made soft gurgling sounds in her throat and pouted her lips in between. Zoya stood staring at the marvel that was her daughter and then picked her up and hugged her to herself.
Zara brought her so much happiness and contentment and she wanted to be there for her all the time. Asad loved her equally and pampered her in every way possible and it was like little Zara controlled both of them and kept them inside her tiny little fist but neither Asad nor she minded it. Zara meant so much to them and after they had her they actually realized that she was a missing piece in their otherwise happy little world.
And Zoya knew that the decision she made to delay her studies was the best thing. She wanted to be there for Zara till at least Zara was two years old. And three months into her pregnancy when the time for college admissions came, she decided not to join. But she still continued to work at the hospital till her delivery. And she had convinced Asad to start studying and these days he was studying part time. He was still practicing as a Lawyer and it was not easy for him as well but they manage. And what they had decided was Zoya would stay at home till Zara was three years old, by which time Asad would finish his MBA and would be settled in his business. They knew that he would then have more free time in his hands to look after Zara as well, as he would be the boss of his own business. And Zoya would then join the college and get her degree in Paediatrics.
She fed Zara and when she fell asleep again Zoya put her in the crib once again and went to make the rest of the dinner ready, still thinking of how her life had shaped up in ways that she had never imagined.
And then suddenly, hearing the bell ring she came out of her thoughts and looked at the door with a smile. She knew that Asad had come home and she got up from the dining table and started walking towards the door still smiling. This was her world; a tiny little world with just the three of them. Her life was not perfect; she had unfulfilled dreams, her career is at a hold and she had not completed her studies. But the blessings in her life; Zara, her tiny little bundle of joy and Asad, her loving husband compensated for it. And more than ever, she knew that she would never regret the decision she had made. And she knew that everything would fall into place as her husband always said and that she would one day become a Paediatrician as well, as she had always dreamt. And she was content and happy with her life.
"Hi" she opened the door and greeted him
"Hi" he greeted, kept his laptop bag on top of his Trolley bag and held out his arms. And she went into them with a smile. It was where she belonged.
"I've missed you." He said softly and traced her cheek bone lovingly with his index finger.
"We missed you too." She whispered and hugged him tightly.
PS... so that's it everyone... hope its worth the wait for those waiting eagerly for the Epilogue and had been asking me for it.. i had actually planned a short one, but as usual i kept on writing and it became too long... but hope that its not boring...
This story is kind of fantasy like but i have given it a touch of reality as well, something that could really happen in real life too, so even the Epilogue, i tried to make it as close to reality as possible by enhancing the kind of problems that a young married couple ( like Asad and Zoya here) might face in real life too.
Anyway this story is very close to my heart and i enjoyed writing each bit of it... so hope you will read it and give comments and hit 'like' and let me know how it is.😃
