Chapter 4
Akram was the guy her family has chosen or her. Zoya, who was still not ready to hang herself in a relationship as such, had a hard time thinking; she, of course, had to keep her family's will first. And then she had at least graduated there was no harm trying her luck with the man her family had chosen for her.
"So...what do you think about yourself?" She asked him and instead of gawking at her audacity he laughed at her impulsive question.
"I can manage to be even more straight forward Zoya." He said and somewhere she liked how he had decided not to build any wall between them.
"And...?"
"And that I don't mind your attempts at trying to dig yourself a career." He said smartly and Zoya couldn't help not gape at him.
"I didn't even say yes yet..." She squealed in astonishment. He shrugged.
"I think that is the only fear Humera mentioned." He smiled his infectious smile. Zoya noticed how he was obsessed with running his fingers in his jet black hair ever so often. She rolled her eyes. He continued looking past her towards the little fountain in his garden. "I don't see any reason for you to reject me." He said seriously and it led her wondering what was running back in his mind when he said that.
"Unless you like someone else..." He finished off half to himself. But, of course, Zoya had heard that. She frowned, and thought of a possible reason of her being hesitant towards him, because the reason he mentioned was so not true.
"I don't think so... I am just... I don't know... It's my first time." She said equally confused as him. And then as Akram registered what she had said he couldn't burst out laughing, soon Zoya joined him too. They got engaged the following week.
Akram was everything a decent man is. Zoya, despite her tremendous attempts, could not find many objections in his behavior towards her. His HR profession had instilled in him a subtle charm. A firm and balanced manhood, Zoya finally concluded.
***
"Can I brake in?" He asked her over the phone.
"Sure Akram... dad was expecting you today." Zoya replied. It had been six months after their engagement and she seldom saw him let alone spending any time with him.
She saw him casually chatting with her Dad and Mom in the drawing room; as if he already belonged to them. Her parents had indeed found a son in him. They were certainly captivated by his matchless modesty and refinement. He looked up at her as she made her way towards him; passing her his rarest smile; the one's she thought she would be thinking of before sleeping that night.
"Mama told me... I am sorry for missing your birthday Zoya." He apologized shyly as if he had forgotten his first wedding anniversary. Zoya laughed waving her hand in the air.
"It doesn't matter... I don't fancy celebrating birthdays." Zoya told him.
"Liar..." Humera chimed sitting across the couch near Akram. "That only applies to herself... she is the first one to surprise you on your birthday otherwise...modest na?"
Akram smiled nodding his head and signaling her to see him in the garden. They walked bare foot in Zoya's tiny garden which she maintained herself only; hence he could smell and see lilies all around.
"White looks good on you." He said hesitantly.
"Not bad..."
"What?"
"Four weeks without a contact and I finally get to see you home." She said rolling her stole around her neck. He kept silent and shifted something in his pocket. Zoya observed him as he took out a little velvet box and placed it on her palm.
"What is this?" She asked in surprise.
"I bought it three days back... for you... and co-incidentally it was your birthday that day." He said pulling his hand back. Zoya gaped at him and the blue velvety box in her hand.
"You are not making this up Akram?" She asked him opening the box to find a silver watch with a mother-of-pearl centre. "It's ethereal... but I don't really have this thing of wearing watches."
"I know and that's why you tend to forget how long you have been away from me." He said sarcastically. Zoya laughed.
"I am sorry about that..."
"It's fine but now you have it... start keeping a track of your time... a month without any contact is too much for me." He said bowing down to put it around her wrist. Zoya smiled slyly... he was too good to be true.
***
"Why are you being so shy Zo?" Humera teased her. "It's not like you don't know him... it's been one and a half year since you guys..."
Zoya blushed a deep scarlet just like the crimson and cream of her dress.
"Stop it Humera... where is my watch?" She asked.
"You are not gona wear it today Zo... a bride has all the time in the world on her day."
"Stop blabbering you bonkers... just look for it."
"It's lost!" Humera huffed in anger.
"Lost?... no that can't be... I always take care of it..." A panicky Zoya blurted getting up from her chair in the dressing room. Humera rolled her eyes.
"Come on... he'll gift you another in your mun-dikhai today anyway... the kind of romance which goes on between you two..."
"Cut the cake Humera..." Zoya scowled angrily; that was her way of telling her sister to shut-up. She looked around in the dressing tables draws, in the various jewelry boxes, even in the make-up kit but it was nowhere to be found.
"Oh Allah! I can't lose it Humera... Not today... please kuch karo!" She pleaded and just when Humera knew her oh-so-strong elder sister was going to shed tears she placed the little silver thing in her palms.
"Here... stop weeping... save them for later tonight."
Zoya would have pounced on her if she hadn't run out like a mice in a cat-rat chase. Zoya sat back caressing the back of her watch where her name was engraved. Usually people engrave the names of the couples but Akram had her name engraved only. She wondered why and decided she would finally ask him tonight. The mere thought made her go red.
***
She came out of the dressing room along with Nikhat and Humera to settle amidst the guests in the special divan set for her on the stage. The regular session of salamis began. Soon consciousness overtook her as she felt being stared upon. Zoya looked up and right across the stage she saw him sitting chatting with two old men. He was so different now... he was now ...a man. She always thought boys took time to grow into men where girls became women at younger ages. His jet black hair set back in the gel which shimmered in the dancing lights of the chandelier above him made him look a little more sophisticated then Zoya could imagine. She smiled to herself remembering Nikhat telling her that Asad was now a doctor.
And with the site of him sitting a mere yards away many lose and untangled recollection of memories paved their way from the valley they were lost in. Zoya remembered how she for once had a crush on this audacious valiant boy, who she once thought was some aficionado. How he in his teenagerish stares had shoed her away from her own cousin's marriage. And how for days she thought he had done some magic on her as she couldn't keep him away from her thoughts. She grinned and shook her head at something she really did not fancy remembering... but today it did not matter. She was finally going to settle in her man's life.
She gazed down at her silver watch; how Akram had made her all curious about every second it took for them to be one. He would be there any minute and then the Qazi would be saying out aloud their Nikah and they would pledge to stay together through thick and thin.
An hour later the Barat had still not arrived... There were frequent exchange of calls between the two families and soon Razia and Siddique were quite restless. Zoya observed the tension in the atmosphere and anxiety in everyone's body language. Her heart began trouncing inside her chest.
She took out her cell phone and before anyone could notice dialed Akram's number. The cell phone was powered off. Fifteen minutes later she tried again... this time someone picked up but it wsn't his voice. Something in the back-ground caught her attention and before she knew things went sheen black.

"See I told you there was something wrong with the girl... bad omens everywhere... even the Qazi had to go somewhere the last moment and we had to arrange another one." Dilshad said to a lady beside her shaking her head in dismay.
She saw Razia taking refuge inside the house. She strode past the crowed to sit beside an ashen Razia.
"What do you plan to do now Razia?" Dilshad asked softly placing her hand on her shoulder. Razia sobbed endless...
"What am I going to do Dilshad... my poor girl... her life has been ruined."
"It's nothing but God's will... now stand up.. everyone outside is making up stories."
"I can't face them Dilshad.. I just can't..."
"You have to... They are all calling her a curse... Zoya has to go her existent home today..."
"What the hell are you saying Dilshad? Akram is no more... Zoya can't marry now..." She said and wept in her arms. "My daughter's life has been ruined...!"
"Don't be stupid.. what do you want? Your daughter to face all those ugly words for the rest of her life?" Dilshad said reminding Razia of the ugly society they were living in.
"Who will marry her now?" She asked raising her voice. Dilshad looked around at the ladies who had turned their heads on the notion.
"I will..." A voice came scaring every single cell in Razia's body.
"You?" She saw him through her blurring vision.
