Chapter 4a : Once upon a time a girl fell in love with a boy...
After a tiring night at the hospital, the whole gang slept in late. For a doctor sleeping in on an off day is extremely luxurious. But Zoya's mind was wired and working overtime, partly due to jetlag, as well as her rendezvous with Asad in OT last night.
She woke up early, dressed and set out, making her way to her home, the Anwarul Qur'an madrasa. She was greeted with surprised tears on Abbas chacha and Ammi jaan s eyes. She felt an inner peace that she hadn't had in a long while, sitting there catching up with them. She'd been sending money monthly since she left, and it was a great help for the childrens' needs.
Abbas showed her the improvements he had made to the orphanage and Zoya was so elated to see them. Then they arrived at a block of rooms overlooking the playground with a cheery sign that said, THE READING ROOM'. Zoya gasped in surprise. As they went in, Zoya saw they had set up exactly what she had wanted to do if she had stayed back in India, a little library of books and a cosy seating area that kids could sit to read or do their homework. The room was so cheerfully colourful that she felt a tinge of dejavu.
'Abbas chacha... How did you know?' I only talked about this to Asad...exactly this!
'Yes beta, you're right. Asad sahab has been here a lot. He was the one who set up these rooms. He was so very strict that it had to be done this way and spared no cost. Abbas said, searching Zoya's eyes.
Zoya was touched. He remembered. Everything. She felt touched that Asad would come and spend his time here with the kids. She blinked hard at the threatening tears. She browsed through the books reverently, smiling at the choice of books. Why did you do all this Asad? Why couldn't you have been heartless and cold? Seeing Zoya overcome with feelings and memories, Abbas gave her some privacy. Zoya sat on the floor in the middle of the room, hugging her knees as memories of that day overcame her without barriers.

After Aditi and Kabir got officially engaged, their close friends unwillingly had to entertain their feelings on singlehood. Observing a couple in love so closely, one inevitably feels insecure about finding their own Mr. or Ms Right. It even made Ms Focused-on-the-goal Zoya wonder if she will ever find hers. Sure, she had her share of admirers, guys who liked her feisty nature, guys who thought they could tame her, but she wasn't attracted to any of them.
She wasn't in love with anyone, but there was one thing she could never explain. Why Asad's stares used to disturb her a lot. From the time he joined their group, Asad and her never reached the comfort level like the others. The way he looked at her when she caught him staring, they way he smiled when she said hi , how he was always the one who walked her back from their late nights at the hospital, the way he made sure all her unwanted admirers stopped pursuing her. Though they never spoke of their attraction, the whole class knew Zoya was Asad's.
Everyone knew Asad had feelings for Zoya, she herself suspected it but didn't seek answers because she was unsure of her own feelings. All she knew was she couldn't afford any distraction from her studies. She was here on borrowed money; she had vowed to return every cent of the scholarship to Siddiqui sahab. She knew herself well, if she allowed herself to love, it would be deep and intense, life changing, a shifting of priorities; an all or nothing kind of loving.
On her birthday that year, Asad had signed her birthday card with a, Love you, Asad'. Just his style; subtle and simple. But it was a statement, one that required a response. Zoya walked up to him in the library the next day and sat opposite him nervously.
'Asad, thanks for your card. And the flowers,' She paused uncertainly, trying to gauge his mood.
'You're most welcome Zoya...' he replied with a genuine smile.
'Umm, this is awkward... umm... about the umm... Zoya stuttered.
"About what Zoya?' Asad smiled teasingly. When she saw his cheeky smile, she blew her top indignantly.
'Allah Miyan! This is so typical ! You guys are so typical ! You do whatever you like, say whatever you like and then just stand back and make US do all the awkward and difficult talking !!! How dare you! You can't just write Love you, Asad" and then just sit here and ask me WHAT?'' Zoya hissed as the librarian looked at them sternly.
Asad bit back a wayward smile and continued to watch her. When Zoya abruptly sobered and her face became serious, he frowned slightly.
'Asad, I'm extremely flattered. Thank you. But I need to explain some things to you about myself. The gang doesn't know most of this. Aditi and Dhiren know parts of it but today I'm going to tell you all of it. " Zoya spoke in a hushed tone.
Whether Asad thought it an incredible honour or a burden, he listened intently as Zoya told him the story of her mother's death and her absent, aloof father, her awkward childhood visits to his home, how she bargained herself a scholarship in exchange for relinquishing inheritance, her stepmother's intense hate and step-sisters's jealousy. She told him of her vow to repay her loan and her need to be independent and successful. Asad listened carefully until she finished talking and looked up at him. She expected him to be reluctant, to take back his words; who wanted a girlfriend with this much baggage?
'I'm still in love with you Zoya. Thank you for telling me about your past. It makes me love you more, not otherwise.' Asad said quietly.
'But Asad, I can't be distracted from my goal. If we are in a relationship, you will expect things, I will expect things, we will fight over silly things and I will be distracted, I'm built that way.' Zoya blurted frustratedly.
'You're not saying No' to me Zoya. Neither are you saying Yes". What ARE you saying?' Asad came to the point.
"I'm saying, let's wait and see. If we still feel this way when we graduate or if you haven't found someone else by then, then yes, I'd love to be with you. But not now...' Zoya looked down at her hands. She hoped he wouldn't be disheartened, or worse, heartbroken. She wasn't saying No', she was saying "yes I do have feelings for you, but wait, please...'.
'I'll wait for you Zoya..." he said and she looked up, shocked. Asad smiled at her shock, It's not like we're going anywhere the next few years?'. Zoya was so relieved that she didn't lose a friend. It was a nice feeling, someone loves you enough to wait for you.

Chapter 4b
Through their final year, Zoya thought herself very smart and practical, when all the while she was just falling harder and deeper for Asad. She began noticing the lush deep timbre of his voice, how different her name sounded when he called it. How they shared jokes with each other in a look; sometimes just looking up from a book to find him staring intensely at her, feeling breathless with the feeling. She found herself wanting to hold his hand, to feel his arms around her, missing him when she was alone.
She began looking forward to their walks home from the hospital at night, relishing in his undivided attention. She also had to contend with her extreme irritation when other girls flirt with him; which happens a lot. One girl in particular kept pursuing him, Aisha was her name. Zoya found herself with an arch nemesis, as everything about Aisha irritated her to no end; pretty, smart, flirtatious, rich, elegant. But Asad, innocently or not, played along and enjoyed all the attention Aisha was giving him.
Their flirting was becoming a frequent problem for Zoya. After a particular evening of watching them cosily examine a patient together in the ward, Zoya walked off in a huff, alone. She walked all the way back to her apartment room in a fit of jealousy. Unused to this wretched feeling, she burst into tears in the bathroom with the sound of the shower drowning her sobs.
Darn it ! Zoya thought. I've gone and fallen in love with him! But there was no going back now. The padlocked gates were burst open wide and there was no stopping Zoya's feelings. She cursed herself for crying over a boy and abandoning her logical thoughts. She looked herself in the mirror and berated herself for her stupid jealousy; after all she didn't ask him to be exclusive to her.
Fine. I'll show him. Two can play this game. Zoya made up her mind to make him pay for reducing her into a mess. She went to bed with half a plan, shutting her phone off, ignoring the dozen missed calls from Asad.
The next morning, Zoya left extra early, reaching the wards much earlier to finish her work. When Asad arrived with her other group friends, she was deep in discussion with a lecturer that she didn't greet him as she would usually. She continued to ignore his presence the whole morning, not even a glance. Obviously Asad knew something was amiss because he kept trying to corner her alone but with some ruse or another she cleverly avoided him. Then she went home and holed herself in her room, feigning a migraine, avoiding Asad's calls.
The next morning, Asad arrived at the wards to the sight of Zoya laughing and being very chummy with a classmate, Aman. Aman, was a known long-time admirer of Zoya, and for Asad to see this made his blood boil. Stubbled and tired looking, Zoya also saw him seethe with anger at her, and walk off. Their avoided each other the whole of that day.
That night, while Zoya was finishing an assignment grumpily on her laptop, she received a text message. From Asad.
" Ask Aman to walk you home from now. I'm done."
Just like that. Curt, dismissive and final. Zoya dissolved into tears so heartbrokenly that Aditi rushed in to see her. Shocked at the sight of Zoya weeping, she hugged her best friend tightly and rocked her. Aditi was helpless as Zoya refused to explain and simply cried herself to sleep.
The next day, Kabir, Aditi, Preeti and Dhiren had the weirdest lunch time ever. Zoya and Asad sat at opposite ends of the party, frosty and unwilling to even look at each other. Asad actually stood and stalked off mid lunch, and Zoya picked at her food disinterestedly.
Kabir, and Aditi tried to talk some sense into them separately, but despite their best efforts the two became more estranged and angry. This continued for 2 weeks, with Asad grumpy and in a permanent nasty mood; Zoya stone silent and moody. Their gang were helpless to reunite them as their exams neared. Soon, exams passed and everyone left for a short fortnight-long holiday back home. Zoya went back to the madrasa to nurse her broken heart miserably. She found some solace there with Chacha and Ammi Jaan.
Not a call from Asad, not a message, nothing. She cried herself to sleep every night, for being a fool and not sticking to her resolve not to fall in love.
When the final semester resumed, Fate had some interesting twists in store for them.
