OS: A Winter Wonderland
Lights, laughter, shopping, colors and family; Christmas always meant something different to everyone but one consistent aspect was the Christmas spirit. She felt that spirit just for a second as she stood in front of the 76 ft tall Norway Spruce in the heart of the city. People walked all around, bundled up in their warm winter attire, clinging onto bags and each other. Some stop to get a glimpse of an icon of great Christmas tradition, others just look as they walk by. In the distance she could hear the Carolers singing as Santa laughed while taking pictures with little children. It was a cold winter night, in a city with over a million people, in the holiday season where no one was alone, amongst all this hustle and bustle, Zoya still felt alone, she felt as though something was missing. "Kaash aap mere liye aa jate Mr. Khan" she secretly wished, sighing at the memory of the last conversation she had before leaving to gather her things here. As she walked down the block towards the train station, Zoya stared at the ground.
FLASHBACK
Asad walked in as Zoya picked up a few more shirts to put in her duffel. "Why are you packing so much you are only going for a week" he said sounding a little sad. Zoya let out a giggle and shook her head, "Mr. Khan why is that a point you keep mentioning. Yes I am coming back in a week but I need to take at least 3 shirts with me." She zipped the bag, and sat down. "Kya hua?" He asked taking the seat next to her. "I wish you could have come. It's not fair that you won't do this for me", Asad cleared his throat as he ran his right hand through the left side of his hair. "You know I don't mind fulfilling any of your wishes Ms. Farooqui but this is childish. And chances are that it won't snow this year on that day. So really..." He stopped noticing her glare at him; she then turned her body intertwining her leg with his. She held his collar as she said "why do you have to think about things so much? Don't you ever listen to your heart? If you believe it may just happen! I mean after thinking a gazillion times you told me you love me, even though both of us know it was there for a long time." She was enraged as she saw the hint of a smirk on his face. "Ugh!!! Einstein chale gaye, inko chor gaye!" She said throwing his collar back and turning her back to him. She thought she heard him chuckle before he grabbed her by the waist and made her face him, placing her the same way she was before. "First of all, why did you compare me to Einstein?", "because he thought too much! And he couldn't help it! His brain was huge like your ego!" Asad couldn't help but smile, he loved annoying Zoya to the extreme.
"Second, tell me again why this is so necessary for you?" He stroked her leg as he said this sending shivers through her. Zoya let out a frustrated sigh, "ugh Mr. Khan you are worse than a child. How many times do I have to tell you? Ok so when my friends and I were in college, we would often talk about what we want from the one man we love and one thing we all had in common was that we wanted him to whisk us off our feet. My way was that on the night of Christmas day, as it snowed and everyone was ready to call it a night, the man I love would do something super romantic for me. Anything! Like a horse drawn carriage ride or something simple like just hold my hand as we looked at the Christmas tree in Rockefeller center. It doesn't have to be extreme Mr. Khan just something that I can call my winter wonderland, something special. And the best part is that it would snow! There would be over a foot of snow to the point that even in the city you could see it for miles! Christmas is one of the biggest holidays where I came from like Holi or Diwali here. I've always loved the Christmas spirit and to share it with someone special would make it perfect." She gently tapped her forehead with his as she could see a tiny blush form on his cheeks, Zoya smiled. Sometimes when his dimples reveled themselves that way, Zoya just wanted to grab his cheeks and give him a big kiss! But this time she had to control herself, she was mad at him and he needed to know. She moved herself back and just as she got up he pulled her down on his lap, "toh aap aise khafa ho ke New York jayein gi?" his tone was innocent. "Yes! Because you don't listen to me!" With that she got up and walked into the bathroom.
The next day was Zoya's flight, as Asad drove her to the airport she thought of different ways to convince him to come with her but didn't mouth any of them. "Ms. Farooqui please don't be mad. I need you to understand Aami isn't well and the timing is off." Zoya snickered in disbelief, "as usual use Aami as an excuse" she thought to herself. "But it's not...don't you get it? The timing is perfect! It was meant to be that around this time Aapi and Jeeju are able to get off from work. We decide to get married on New Year's Day, hence the fact that I go to NY to get the remainder of my things to bring them back here around Christmas time, so my wish can come true." They reached the airport and started on completing the formalities. "Then you shouldn't have decided on that day for us to get married." Zoya huffed as they checked in her bag then collected her boarding pass. "But you know why I chose that day Ms. Farooqui. I wanted to start a whole new year of my life with you as my wife, so..." She looked at him eagerly "...that it's easier for me to remember our anniversary" his tone was playful. "Oh! Jokes! You got jokes Mr. Khan?" She punched his arm as he pulled her in for a hug, "no, that's not why. I want to start a new year as husband and wife so that every year after will have that same beautiful essence to look forward to." He said into her shoulder. Zoya felt herself blush, "I'll miss you Asad" she whispered and separated herself from him. As he said bye and handed her things to her Zoya could see the hurt in his eyes, he hadn't wanted her to go. He even insisted on having everything of hers shipped to Bhopal and he would pay for it, but Zoya wanted to sort her belongings and only bring what was important. How did she get so lucky? Even if he didn't make this wish come true he still loved her, she reasoned as she walked towards the gate. She looked back to see that Asad had turned towards the exit, already the phone to his ear. "Kabhi nahin sudhrein ge" she laughed and walked away.
FLASHBACK ENDS
Zoya was bought out of her thoughts by a nudge by someone on the train. "Allah Miyah! What an idiot! Where am I supposed to go in this packed train?" Just as she turned around to yell at the person she saw him make his way towards the door. His frame and walk resembled Asad's but Zoya couldn't see his face, "Zoya stop dreaming! He's not coming here" she reprimanded herself mentally and got off at the next stop. As Zoya entered the door way she was welcomed with a warm Salaam by her Jeeju and a questioning Aapi. "Zoya is this is? Are you sure you don't want to sort through the rest of your clothes? There are a lot more in the back of your closet." Zoya washed her hands, changed and came back out plopping herself next to Anwar. "Zoya I asked you something" she looked at Anwar who gestured to her clothes, "Oh yeah! No Aapi. It's fine waise bhi I'm sure Asad won't approve of those" she said settling the matter as Anwar turned up the volume on the weather report. "Look they say flurries in the forecast" he said to Zoya excitedly. "you just might have your white Christmas this year" he said tapping her arm. "Yeah but it won't change into a winter wonderland" she murmured. "huh? Anwar asked, but Zoya just nodded. "come help me with dinner please" Zeenat called. "Duty calls" Zoya said with a huff throwing a pillow at her laughing brother in law. Before Zoya fell asleep that night she made a quick call to Asad, when he didn't pick up she called the landline. Najma answered and said that Asad went out of town for a business meeting and won't be back for a few days. "UGH! Kaam ke liye waqt hai aur mere liye..." she kissed his picture on her phone and shut her eyes until sleep overtook her.
Zoya woke up to the combination of a knock on her door and demands from her sister, mixed in with the alarm she set on her phone. Running her eyes, she opened them and looked over at her calendar. "Merry Christmas New York" in her morning raspy voice. Clearing her throat she resumed to walking into the bathroom to start her day. As she was done showering, Zoya walked out creating a messy up-do with her hair, putting her earrings one she glanced over at the her window, then did a double take. She moved in towards the window agape, what she saw left her speechless. The sidewalks, rooftops, even cars were covered in snow; white, fluffy, cold snow! "OMG!!!! Snow!!!" she screamed walking out. "Aapi! Jeeju! It's snowing!!! It's a white Christmas! After so long!" Her joy was present through her screaming tone and ecstatic expression. Anwar laughed and continued with his coffee as Zeenat reprimanded her for jumping on the couch and not drying her hair even though the apartment was warm. "You will catch a cold, sardi hai! ZOYA!!!" she yelled as Zoya whooshed by back into her room. After texting all her friends about the good news, she sat down for a breather. It only few seconds for the smile to turn to a frown, as she pouted she sat up on her bed. "And he said it wouldn't snow! Even Allah is on my side" she crossed her arms and huffed. After she was done getting ready, her phone vibrated.
"I have no idea why you still haven't seen the tree Angela. There is no excuse, you live here" Zoya taunted as her and two of her college friends walked towards the tree in midtown that night. "Well it's New York, people here a busy. We all don't have rich, business men fiancs you know" Angela mocked as Zoya stuck her tongue out at her. "He's more than that. You should know" she didn't want to think about him but she couldn't help herself. "Well thank you for that" she heard his voice call from behind, a smile already forming on her face. Zoya turned and saw Asad in jeans, a muscle T and a leather jacket. She instantly walked up to him, and when he extended his hand out she took it, without hesitation, without looking back at her friends. "I'm not late, this holiday is not over yet right?" Asad asked, but Zoya didn't utter a word all she felt was the warmth of his hand on hers. They walked a little more and Zoya looked up when she heard a horse's neigh and saw a horse drawn carriage smack in front of her. "Christmas is a big thing where you come from and so is this" Asad whispered and hopped on, turning he once again offered his hand. As they sat quietly during the ride to Central Park, a thought came into Zoya's head. "how did you get them to allow you to have a carriage ride here? They don't always do this you know?" Zoya stared at his grin and decided to leave it at that. He was after all Asad Ahmed Khan. When they got off at Central Park Asad led her through a path with a little bit of snow to the point that it almost looked like ice. The best part was that he didn't let go of her hand once throughout the entire way.
They approached a small area of the park that seemed to be guarded by two bodyguards. Asad nodded at them and they parted revealing a sight so beautiful Zoya has only read about in books. The trees had lights, a small pine tree stood in one corner with ornaments, lights and little bells. The snow was untouched, not a footprint in sight. There was a red velvet carpet laid out leading to a table for two. Another piece of the carpet led to the bridge that had no snow which confused Zoya for a bit. Asad pulled out her chair like the gentleman that he is, and then took his seat He lit two candles that were protected with thin glass around them, and that's when Zoya finally spoke. "Mr. Khan I don't think we are dressed for a normal candle-lit dinner" all of a sudden she was feeling conscious which was absolutely out of character for her. Asad looked at her perplexed "but this is your Christmas Ms. Farooqui there is no such thing as normal in your style right?" he joked and then picked up the top over the platter. "Pizza!!" she exclaimed as Asad smiled. "Like I said it's especially for you" he commented serving her a slice.
"A dance?" Asad asked after dinner was over. Zoya smiled, pointing at her ear than wiggling her thumb she then frowned. "You doubt me?" Asad acted as if he was hurt. Zoya laughed and stood up, "what you waiting for? Let's do this" she said her voice excited. As soon as she set foot on that snow-less bridge she heard music. Zoya looked around but saw nothing, "weird" she said as Asad slid his arm around her waist. "when did you get here?" she asked. "Yesterday. I booked the flight the minute you walked towards the terminal." Zoya smiled as she remembered Asad talking on the phone that day. "All for me?" she asked and Asad blushed in response. "Thank you for making my wish come true Mr. Khan. This is the best gift ever!" she inched herself closer into him. "No Zoya thank you" he said. "For what? I didn't give you anything", to this Asad shook his head, "yes you did. You gave me the best gift ever. You gave me the gift of love. There is no competition to that". He kissed the top of her head. And as they stood there, her head on his chest dancing in the freezing cold, Zoya opened her eyes for a split second. Touching her lips to his she smiled through her kiss, she always thought there was nothing she can do, but today she knew there was nothing he couldn't do and her perfect winter wonderland proved this. Allah was on her side that's why He gave her Asad Ahmed Khan.
