Maha's voice seemed to be dripping with sarcasm.
Zoya let this out all in one breath.
She began furiously but the words died in her mouth as soon as she looked up.
She gasped loudly.
Dilshad replied, rolling her eyes at her son.
Maha said in a breathless voice, entering her room.
Zoya shrieked.
She said, trying to keep a straight face and not jump up and down.
Zoya wailed loudly.
He's THAT good, Maha added mentally.
"If he isn't so bad, why don't YOU get married to him?" Zoya groaned before starting her mumbling to Allah Miyaan.
'Oh I wish!' Maha thought to herself, smirking. Her friend didn't know that she had hit upon a jackpot because Asad Ahmed Khan was the definition of Hotness...
_________
"I'm depressed too, you know." Maha said with a twinkle in her eyes that Zoya completely missed.
"You? Why?"
"Because in a few days, a big fat mustached uncle is going to steal my best friend forever." She pouted as if saddened by the thought.
"Who? What do you mean?" Zoya asked, knitting her eyebrows questioningly.
"I'm talking about your husband, yaar! Asad Ahmed Khan." Maha joked, trying to stifle her laughter.
Zoya let out a small yelp as if someone had poked her in the eye as she stared at her friend with her mouth hanging to the floor, horrified out of her wits.
"Mustache?? You've gotta be joking!"
________
"What is this?" He asked annoyingly, after giving the photo a quick glance.
"Its a photo of you two from childhood. Look carefully na!"
Asad's eyes turned wide as he focused on the girl in the photo.
"I'm getting married to this beach ball??" He let out.
The photo showed a really fat girl of about 5 years old, wearing the most colorful frock and eating a chocolate bar... or more precisely, smearing a chocolate bar all over her face while an 8 year old Asad stood nearby, crying?
"Yes! She's your future bride!" Najma squealed excitedly.
"And you know why you're crying in this photo?" Dilshad asked, entering the room with an amused smile on her face.
"Because that chocolate bar was yours and she snatched it from you and ate it right in front of you... while you cried your eyes out."
_______
Maha gave her a long hug and whispered in her ear.
"I know you're scared but know this, you are not getting married to a fat pot-bellied man. I was only pulling your leg. Simply put, your husband is hotness-personified! Do you have any idea how jealous I am?"
"What?" Zoya let out so loudly that Zeenat turned around, looking at the two curiously.
_______'Well then, wave good bye to your days of freedom! You'll now probably spend the rest of your life wiping food off your wife's face. How pleasant!' The voice sneered and Asad couldn't help cringing in disgust.
Dressed in a cream Sherwani with intricate gold and maroon work done heavily on the collar and extending all the way down, he would've looked like a runaway model if that stupid sehra hadn't been dangling over his face.
______
Damn! She's not even punctual! Late on her own wedding?!' He muttered to himself checking his wrist watch and Najma beside him began snickering at his remark.
After what seemed like ages, his wife-to-be finally descended down the steps in the amidst of Oh's and Ah's from the crowd. Unable to keep waiting, he sneaked a peek from his sehra and breathed a sigh of relief and annoyance at the same time.
The first thing he noticed about her was her figure and it had his jaw dropping. He didn't know what he was expecting, perhaps a huge ball in a bridal attire bouncing down the stairs? But she was so slim and smart! Such a nice figure! To say he was impressed would be an understatement.
His eyes traveled up her body of their own accord and he almost groaned out loud when he reached the top.
Her face was hidden!
It was covered by the drooping pallu of her heavy dupatta! How can people make Oh'ing and Ah'ing sounds at a faceless figure? Seriously, people can be so fake, sometimes!
But still, she was not an obese girl like he had thought! In fact she wasn't anything like that piece of blob he had seen in the picture! He smiled despite himself as relief coursed their his veins and the ceremonies began. Maybe this wasn't going to be half so bad...
________
'No! This is sooo not happening! I'm not going to spend the night with a stranger. How could I have forgotten about this part of the marriage? Probably because I was too worried about the size of his belly! What am I going to do now?' Zoya mumbled to herself, almost hysterical with worry.
________
'Its now or never, Zoya!' She whispered to herself and with a swift motion, she pull the dupatta off her head and stood up
.
"Listen, Mr. Asad Ahmed Khan. I need to talk to you!" She hoped her voice sounded bold enough.
She saw his shoulders stiffen at her sudden announcement before he proceeded to carefully put his watch on the dressing table and turned to her.
Her heart skipped a beat and blood froze in her veins as she looked at the startlingly familiar bewildered face of Asad Ahmed Khan who looked as shocked as she felt.
"YOU? Allah Miyaan! Please tell me this is not happening!" She managed to get out in a voice so full of shock that it was low as a whisper.
_______
"You were lying, weren't you?" Asad asked, shocked.
"Well, so were you, Mr. Khan! You didn't have a fiance who was madly in love with you, either. And you lied first!" She retorted shrilly.
He glared at her in response but she could feel wheels churning in his head. After a minute of thoughtful silence, he looked up at her with sudden accusing and angry eyes,
"You said you were getting married to a guy from a respectable family in Bhopal." He begin slowly.
"You knew you were getting married to me!"
"No, I didn't! If I knew I was getting married to you, I would've just committed suicide, wouldn't have I? I'm sure the hell on the skies is less torturous than living with you!" She replied indignantly.
"Oh really? Well, guess what? I refuse to believe you! I'm dead sure you knew but still you didn't turn down the damn proposal!" He had now started pacing the room agitatedly.
Zoya felt like grabbing the nearest vase and whacking his big fat arrogant head with it. The nerve of this man!
______
'You were the one thinking of her the night before your wedding. Lets just say your wish came true.' The little voice in his head taunted but he chose to ignore it.
Continuing his relentless pacing of the room with balled fists and a clenched jaw, he turned to give her another one of his glares, implying through his eyes that all this was entirely her fault when he saw her sway slightly on her feet. Confused, he stopped midway and continued to observe her as she shakily raised a hand to her temple before her eyes rolled back in her head and without warning, she slumped towards the floor.
He ran towards her impulsively grabbing her hand and quickly winding his other arm around her thin waist as he felt her legs gave way. Worried, he gently patted her face and called out her name to get out some response. None. He touched her forehead. Burning hot.
Panicking, he scooped her petite frame in his arms and laid her on his bed. Grabbing the water jug, he sprinkled some water on her face and heaved a sigh of deep relief when she slowly opened her eyes.
_______
"Wedding stress?"
"Yes. I was getting married to someone I didn't even know. I think that's quite a good reason to take stress, don't you? And then, you made it all the more better by making me feel so very welcome." She paused to take a deep breath not noticing the wave of guilt that swept over Asad's face and continued,
"Anyway, now will you get me something to eat or stand here and hope that I die from this combination of fever and hunger?"
"What?" He asked, thrown off track by the sudden change in topic.
"Food, Mr. Khan. You know edible stuff people eat to stay alive?"
"I know what food is." He snapped.
"I'll get it for you along with Panadol. You just stay here in bed and rest."
Turning, he muttered in a low voice,
"You have trouble walking straight when you're in good health, God forbid what you'll do to yourself when you're feeling dizzy."😆😆😆
"I heard that Mr. Khan!" He heard her yell indignantly from behind and couldn't help the smile that graced his face as he closed the door behind him.
_________
'I'm wandering around the house on my wedding night. People would start thinking I'm gay or something.' He muttered to himself, cringing at the thought.
He entered his room to find her in the same position he had left her, worrying her bottom lip with a cute frown on her face.
Did he just used the word cute??
_________
"What are you looking at, Mr. Khan? I know I look beautiful today but you can't seem to take your eyes off me!"
"What?? Don't get delusional, Miss Farooqi. I'm only looking at you because I've never seen a human eating like a monkey before. Let me tell you that this is the first and the last time you're eating on my bed!" He said, cringing when he saw her spilling rice on his bed sheet.
"Mr. Khan-" She began agitatedly but he cut in midway.
_________
What did you just call me??" His eye brows rose dangerously.
"Akdu! Maybe you should make it your official name. It goes with your personality as well. But the name Asad suits you as well. Asad means brave like a lion, right? I don't know about the brave part but you're always roaring like a lion and looking for someone to eat. That's why they say you should think carefully before you name your children. Name can have so much effect on a person's personality." She said, finishing her plate and placing it on his bedside table.
"I don't have time to listen to your blabbering. I'm going to change. If I stay here a minute longer, I sure as hell will get a headache." Picking his white kurta from the wardrobe, he stomped to the bathroom.
_________
OK now, if you'll just get off my bed so I can go to sleep?"
"What? Where on Earth am I supposed to sleep then?"
"This bed in mine so no one sleeps here except me! You're sleeping there." He pointed at the sofa placed at the other end of his huge room.
"No way, Mr Khan! I'm not sleeping on that."
"OK. You can sleep with me then." Shrugging his shoulders casually, Asad started walking towards his bed confidently and sat down on the other end. When she didn't move and remain seated with her arms crossed over his chest, he decided to go a little further.
"Miss Farooqi, I move about a lot in my sleep. So if, somehow, I end up on top of you during the night, please don't assume I'm doing it on purpose."
As predicted, giving a small screech of Allah Miyaan, Zoya almost fell flat on her face in her hurry to get off the bed.
"Mr. Khan. You are so NOT a gentleman! You're making a girl sleep on the sofa! I thought matches was made in heaven! How come I got paired with you!" She continued her angry mutterings as she went to the sofa, looked at it for a minute, before coming back to Asad's bed and with a swift move, pulled his covers off him.
"Hey!" Asad let out indignantly as he tried to make a grab for the covers but she was quicker and succeeded in pulling it off him completely.
Fuming, he went to his cupboard to get a new one for himself and muttered irritatedly.
"Miss Farooqi, even I don't know how I got landed with you! Clearly, we're a mismatch made in hell!"
_________
His eyes shot down and he saw her wide eyes looking up at him interrogatively. Before he could answer, she continued,
"Mr. Khan, don't you dare think about doing something inappropriate. I know I'm your wife but I'm not giving you permission to do anything. I'll... I'll scream. And I'm telling you I've got a really powerful set of lungs on me." Here she gulped and then continued her blabbering at full speed,
"And... And I've got a black belt in martial arts. Trust me! You don't want to mess with me."
His mouth actually fell open at her words. But then if he looked from her point of view, it must have been weird for her to wake up and find him standing on her head.
"What?? Miss Farooqi, you assume a lot! I wasn't about to do anything!"
Ignoring his words, she quickly slipped her hand beneath her pillow, pulling out some sort of a can.
"Recognize this, Mr. Khan? It's a pepper spray. You take one step closer and you'll get a fine dose."
"Miss Farooqi! Are you out of your mind?! Trust me; I don't have any intention of approaching you in the wrong way. I was just checking your fever, that's all. If I wanted to do something wrong, I had the entire night to do it!
___________
As she picked up her pillow from the sofa to fling it back on his bed, her eyes landed on her pepper spray beneath it and a faint smile adorned her lips. How could she have been so stupid?
She was still toying with the pepper spray when she heard someone approaching her from behind. She turned quickly to find herself face to face with a naked muscular male chest!
Without thinking for a moment, she aimed her weapon at the intruder's face and started spraying with her eyes firmly shut. The angry bellow of "MISS FAROOQI" made her return back to her senses and she pried her eyes open to find Asad, with only a towel tied loosely around his waist, doubled up, his eyes scrunched up painfully.
"Miss Farooqi! What the hell is wrong with you?!" He yelled, rubbing his eyes vigorously.
"I'm sorry Mr. Khan! But it's your own fault! I can see you have a nice well-built body but why did you have to publicly display your six packs in front of me? I got scared!"
"Urghhh! Miss Farooqi, I forgot you were in the room! Now, will you get me some damn water or continue your mindless blabbering?"
"Water? Oh yes water! I have a better idea Mr. Khan! I'll lead you to the water... Umm... I mean the bathroom."
Tentatively, she held his arm, feeling awed when she felt his biceps contract under her fingers as he rubbed his eyes to relieve some of the burning sensation.
"Miss Farooqi, will you start moving or stay here clinging to my arm forever?"
Blushing a tomato red, she led him to the bathroom where he started splashing water on his face as soon as he reached the wash basin. Finally relieved, he turned to glare at her with his slightly red and bloodshot eyes causing Zoya to quickly cover her eyes with her hands to avoid looking at his semi-naked form.
"Was that your way of getting even with me?" He asked irritated.
"What? No! Of course not! I told you I got scared seeing you so close and so... shirtless." She waved at his chest with her hand.
"Miss Farooqi, you are going to drive me insane!"
"Mr. Khan, do you really think you're sane right now?"
"Urghhh! You're impossible, Miss. Farooqi!"
"And you're insufferable, Mr. Khan!"
"You're intolerable!"
"You're despicable!"
"You're... Leave it! I'm not a kid! I'm going!"
"Yes! Go and get some clothes on!"
"Yeah, so can stop peeking at me like I'm blind and can't see you staring!"
Zoya felt herself flush at his comment as he stomped to the room and began dressing up while she waited in the bathroom. After fully suited, he returned and informed her in clipped tones, "I'm leaving. Allah Hafiz!"
She nodded quietly, once again blown away by his dashing looks in a black 3-piece suit. Finally alone, she muttered to herself, "If only I had taken one look at his picture before the wedding, I would've refused to this proposal. I mean, if he's this good looking and is still single, OBVIOUSLY there had to be something wrong with him! Mr. Akdu!"
_______
Umm... I'm sorry Mr. Khan." She tried stifling her laughter under his murderous glare. "But why didn't you go to office? You had a very important meeting, right? Can't bear to see me happy for two minutes?" She asked sarcastically.
The best defense is a good offense! Let's see if it works.
________
"Positive? OK, tell me Miss Farooqi, what is the positive point in getting this meeting cancelled?" He asked with gritted teeth.
"Well Mr. Khan, at least now your staff won't think that you spent the last night crying your eyes out."
"What??"
"Your eyes Mr. Khan." She bit her lower lip to stop herself from laughing out loud when Asad trudged to the mirror and glared at his reflection as if he wanted to gouge his own eyes out. His eyes were still red from the heavy dose of her Pepper Spray.
As soon as he turned towards her and opened his mouth furiously, she quickly blurted.
"Please not now Mr. Khan! I'm hungry!"
__________
You look absolutely adorable, Tamatar. I was just pulling your leg." "Really?" Najma's voice was full of relief.
"Well, I'm pretty sure my eye sight's getting weaker so..." He joked and smiled when he felt Najma give him a tight hug squealing, "You're the best, Bhaijan," before running off to call her Bhabi.
________
Say Masha'Allah Bhaijan. We don't want Bhabi catching an evil eye, now do we?" Najma laughed at her brother's awkward look. "By the way, I think that saying was right that a bride always looks prettier on her Walima than her wedding. I can see that you openly agree, Bhaijan." Najma giggled teasingly before leaving the room.
_________
There was a sharp knock on the door at this instant and Najma peeked in. "Bhaijan, when we were at the parlor, you were blowing a fuse and now you're just standing there talking to your dear wife? Aren't we getting late now?" She asked teasingly. "Bring Bhabi downstairs quickly. Ammi's all ready to leave." She told him hurriedly before disappearing again.
__________
"I won't let you fall. I promise." He told her solemnly, looking into her eyes intently.
"But how will you... I mean, what if you have to go somewhere or something?" She babbled incoherently, getting nervous under his intense eyes.
"I won't leave you. I will stay by your side all the time, no matter what." He told her reassuringly, extending a hand for her to take.
"But-" Zoya began looking at his outstretched hand uncertainly.
"Don't you trust me?" He asked a little exasperatedly.
"No!" She replied bluntly without thinking.
"Oh that's so good to hear," Asad said sarcastically before grabbing her forearm and pulling her to her feet, "Now let's go."
"Not so quickly, Mr. Khan! I'll fall!" Zoya shrieked as Asad started pulling her towards the door.
_________
"Mr. Khan?"
"Hmmm?"
"I'm hungry."
"Surprise, surprise." He said sarcastically.
"What? I'm actually hungry! When is the dinner going to be served?"
"I'm sitting here next to you, Miss Farooqi, how am I supposed to know?"
"Let's ask Tamatar to tell the caterers to start serving."
"And how exactly are you going to call Tamatar?"
"I'm going to wave her over."
"You will do no such thing! You're the bride, for Heaven's sake. Just sit tight for a while; I'm sure the dinner is going to be served soon."
"Mr. Khan. Can't you do something? Zaroon always managed to get something for me whenever I was hungry."
_________
"Shut up. Don't call me a Babber Sher!" He gritted out.
"Well that's what your name means."
"It doesn't mean a lion literally! It means brave."
"Brave and you? You're as brave as a rat!"
"You're getting on my nerves Miss. Farooqi! One more word and I'm getting off this stage. I mean it!"
_______
He stretched his legs as far as he could in the small space of the back seat and threw his head back, grateful that he wasn't the one driving. He glanced down on his left to find Zoya peacefully sleeping with her head lolling on her shoulders.
She had been a slight to behold today. He had caught himself quietly staring at her without even realizing. He was sure all the compliments they had received together were actually earned by her.
There was a small jolt as the car passed over a speed breaker and Zoya's head fell on his shoulders like a comforting weight. He looked down to find her still sleeping soundly as she moved her head slightly to find a more comfortable position in his shoulder. Without realizing, he found himself moving down slightly so that his shoulder was at a lower and more comfortable level for her. He saw a small contented smile playing at her lips and she lightly wrapped her arm around his as she snuggled deeper. The refined beauty of her face now seemed to dissolve in an expression of child-like innocence as she slept soundly.
A loose strand fell on her face by the air blowing in and she scrunched up her button nose, looking annoyed. He felt himself smiling as he gingerly used his other hand to tuck it behind her ears, earning another relaxed smile from her. There was something about her smile that made him happy from the inside.
Quietly gazing at her face, he didn't realize when he dozed off, his head coming to rest on top of Zoya's...
The middle-aged driver, Mushtaq, glanced in the review mirror and smiled widely. Who would believe his short-tempered and strict boss who hardly showered anyone with a smile, was right now cuddling with his wife in the back seat of the car with the softest smile adorning his face. He could feel it; Ma'am Sahib was going changing him already.
He smiled more widely. That was the beauty of love. It could melt the stoniest of hearts. He hoped his Sahib would fall in love with Ma'am Sahib quickly and live all the happiness that he deserved in his life... Because no matter how ruthless and hard-hearted his Sahib seemed on the outside, Mushtaq knew the case was opposite on the inside.
He sent a silent prayer to the Heavens above to bless this couple and guide them to the best of understanding. Smiling, he glanced in the review mirror once more as he drove on...
