"Miss Farooqui, this is my admin head Miss Mishra. Miss Mishra, aaj se Miss Farooqui aapki assistant ka post fill karegi," Asad said, as he introduced the two women to each other. Zoya smiled politely at the lady, despite the confusion in her own mind.
"Pleased to meet you Miss Mishra, and please call me Zoya," Zoya greeted, as she stretched her arm out to shake the lady's hand. Miss Mishra accepted the gesture graciously, as she clasped Zoya's hand in a firm handshake. But from the unsure smile on her face, Zoya could tell that Miss Mishra was just as confused as her. Now she was convinced that the poor lady wasn't even given any warning about this from Asad before this.
"The pleasure is all mine Zoya. I'm Anushree, but please feel free to call me Anu," the lady replied smilingly, to which Zoya nodded in acknowledgement. Both women turned to Asad for further elaboration, but all they got from him was a blank stare. Asad turned away and began to walk to his cabin, hoping to cut the awkwardness short.
"Wait Mr Khan! Mujhe aapse kuch baat karni thi, akele mein. I mean salary ke baare mein!" Zoya said as she hurried behind Asad, adding in the last sentence just as she caught the questioning look on Anu's face. Asad nodded curtly, and continued walking towards his cabin, Zoya hot on his heels. He held the door open for her and Zoya shot him a wan smile of gratitude as she walked in, standing in the middle of the cabin awkwardly as she waited for Asad to enter and take his seat.
"Accha, toh aapka salary..." Asad began to say as he walked by Zoya and his table, finally settling down behind it on his black office chair and flipping through his organizer. But before he could continue, Zoya cut him short.
"Allah miyan, what's wrong with you Mr Khan! Aapko sach mein lagta hai mujhe aapse salary ke baare mein baat karni hai? I don't want any salary because I'm quite sure you just made up this post for me this very morning," Zoya whined loudly, as she plopped herself down on the chair facing his table across from him. Asad looked up from his organizer slowly, shutting it with a loud snap.
"Miss Farooqui, pehle toh main aapko yeh baata doon ke yeh ek office hai. Yahan sab kaam karne ki koshish kar rahe hai, so please respect that and speak in a lower tone next time," Asad said as cautiously as possible, relieved to be met with a nod of agreement from Zoya, the guilty look on her face pretty evident. He had decided on the way to work itself that he would deal with Zoya in the politest ways possible at work, so that she doesn't ever have any scope to create a scene.
"Aur jahan tak job ki baat hai, then I didn't quite have any other choice. Ammi just randomly decided this morning that you have to come along with me, so zahir si baat hai that I didn't actually have any real job openings. So yes, I did just create a new position out of the blue. Now will you go do your job and let me do mine as well?" Asad dismissed, as he waved towards the door. He noted the slight narrowing of Zoya's eyes, and he knew then that she wasn't going to leave so easily.
"Mujhe nahi karna aisi pointless job! Did you see Anu's face just now? She looked utterly confused! I don't think she even wants a personal assistant, and I don't want to sit in her cabin and waste her time unnecessarily. SUNA AAPNE?" Zoya's voice became louder with each word, irritated at how expressionless Asad remained. He only flinched when she finally stood up from her chair and screamed the last two words, and then got up himself, calmly walking over to her side and then standing in front of her, towering over her menacingly, but still wordlessly.
Zoya clenched her fists in an attempt to contain her anger, incredibly annoyed at how calm Asad was. She opened her mouth in preparation to yell at him again, but before she could get to it, Asad's arm encircled her waist and pulled her into his body while his other hand covered her mouth, all in one swift movement, successfully muffling her protests.
"Maine aapko pehle bhi kaha tha ke yahan log kaam karte hai. Talk softly, or don't talk at all. I'm going to remove my hand from your mouth now, but you will not speak loudly anymore. Understood?" Asad commanded in a gruff whisper. Zoya's already widened eyes widened further as she nodded meekly in response. He immediately let go off her then, taking two steps back away from her.
"Aap... aap kya karne wale ho?" Zoya asked softly, as she watched Asad look around his desk, shifting his items around. He finally found his mobile phone and scrolled through it quickly, passing only a fleeting glance in Zoya's direction.
"Prasad ko phone kar raha hoon. Usse job se nikal ke aapko unka job de deta hoon, theek hai? Then you can be MY personal assistant, not Anu's," Asad replied casually, as he pressed his phone against his ear. He hid his amusement at Zoya's horrified expression.
"Bilkul nahi! I'm fine with being Anu's assistant," Zoya protested immediately, launching herself at Asad as she tried to pull his phone away from his ear. Asad stumbled backwards a little, the table next to him breaking his fall as Zoya sprawled herself across his torso. She grabbed his phone and moved away immediately, suddenly aware of what she'd done. She disconnected the call and placed the phone on his desk before walking out of his cabin in a hurry, not turning back even once. Asad watched the door of his cabin swing as it shut after Zoya's departure, and shook his head a little. It was going to be a long day ahead.
