Asad massaged his temples slowly, frowning as he stared at the drawing of the building he had done halfway. It may be surprising to many, but Asad did frown and have problems that had nothing to do with Zoya. And it was surprising to him actually, that three days had passed without Zoya making a fuss and annoying him at work. In fact, she hardly even bothered him in the car on the way to and back from work every morning and evening, choosing to use the time to take quick naps instead. He sighed loudly as he put his pencil down and reached for the phone on his desk.
"Miss Mishra, pichle saal ki client details ki file aapke paas hai na? Could you please bring it over? I need some information from it," Asad immediately ordered once the phone connected, too impatient to wait for a hello from the other side.
"Mr Khan, aap kya aise hi baat karte hai sabke saath? I thought your arrogant behaviour was something reserved especially for me. Anu ne aapka kya bigada hai? Can't you speak nicely at least to her?" Zoya replied, as she twirled the phone cord around her index finger. She heard a very audible groan in response.
"Miss Farooqui, I'm in no mood to argue with you. But in my defense, I did say please. And now will you please pass the phone to Miss Mishra? Why are you even picking up her calls anyway?" Asad muttered towards the end, knowing well that it was too soon to have thought that Zoya had changed.
"Because you made me her assistant remember? So now I pick up her calls, and I take her messages as well. So in response to your polite question, let me politely tell you that I will not pass her the phone, because she's busy at the moment. But I will let her know you called and pass her your message as well. Thank you for calling Miss Anushree Mishra's office! Good bye!" Zoya concluded, slamming the receiver down as soon as she was done just so she could get the last word in. Anu rolled her eyes and laughed at Zoya's antics.
"Zoya, why do you pick on the poor man? He's just trying to do his job. Okay woh sab chodo, kaam ki baat karo. Why did he call?" Anu asked, as she placed her stapler down after tidying up some documents. Zoya began moving things around the table, searching for something. Anu cringed a little, as she watched a few pens roll off the table because of it.
"He wants the last year's client details file. Anu, have you seen my pen drive..." Zoya asked Anu, trailing off halfway through her question as Anu picked up her pen drive from behind her laptop and passed it to her. She smiled sheepishly as she took it and then immediately inserted it into the USB port of her laptop.
"Zoya, I don't think it's a good idea. Mr Khan is pretty set in his ways you know..." Anu tried to reason with Zoya as she began clicking away at her laptop. Anu shook her head slowly and began rearranging the papers on the table that Zoya had messed up.
"Anu, don't worry! I'll pass it to him, and I'll tell him it was all my idea. You won't get into any trouble at all," Zoya replied confidently, as she pulled the pen drive out of the port and walked towards the door of the cabin. Anu shrugged and nodded, before seating herself down again and getting back to the documents she was working on. If Zoya failed, then she'd intervene, if not she was just going to let Zoya do whatever she wants.
"Come in," Asad allowed, as soon as he heard a knock on his door. He slowly looked up from his drawing, just to find Zoya enter the cabin, the glee on her face frightening Asad a little. More shocking than that was the fact that she had actually knocked on the door before barging in. What was this girl up to now?
"Miss Farooqui, aap yahan kya kar rahi ho? I'd asked for the file from Anu because I need it quite urgently. So please don't waste my time and just get the file for me," Asad complained, upon noticing that Zoya had walked in empty-handed.
"File mere paas hi hai Mr Khan! Yeh dekho!" Zoya announced, as she pulled the slim pen drive out of her pocket. She walked over to him and pushed his chair a little, trying to make space for herself to reach for his laptop. He was too heavy for her to shift though, so she resorted to leaning over his desk to get it. Asad crossed his arms over his chest and leaned back, watching her with a raised eyebrow.
"Aap mujhe itna ghoor ghoor ke kyun dekh rahe ho? Oh, maybe you're staring at the pen drive. Aapne shayad isse pehle kabhi dekha nahi hoga na? Aap toh abhi bhi woh seventeenth century wale CDs prefer karte hoge," Zoya jabbed sarcastically, as she inserted the pen drive into Asad's laptop.
"Jo aap cake ke ingredient samajhte ho. Waise bhi, aisi koi baat nahi hai. CDs are still widely used so there's no need to exaggerate. And I do know what a pen drive is, but I had asked for a file you know, with papers in it? This does not look like anything I had asked for, toh zahir si baat hai that I would stare right?" Asad snapped back, irritated at Zoya's constant need to call him old-fashioned. And to think that she calls him the judgmental one!
"Papers were used IN THE STONE AGE. Dekhiye, technology kitna advanced hogaya hai. Aap ek baar technology ke saath chaloge toh aapka kya jayega?" Zoya continued, ignoring the fact that Asad was glaring down her back. She finally turned the screen towards Asad, and then stood next to his chair, leaning into the table.
"Yeh lijiye, aapka file. Now, if you click on this one, it's in chronological order, just like it was in your paper file. You can just click on the name and it'll lead you to that client's full project details. Now this one will give you the list of clients alphabetically, this one is according to profit made..." Zoya began explaining, oblivious to the fact that Asad was gaping a little by now. She leaned over his arm as she pointed at the screen, pulling away only when she felt Asad's breath hit the back of her neck.
"You managed to put all of the details of all of last year's clients into this one program within these three days, that too in so many different ways?" Asad asked, once Zoya moved away from him, clearly impressed but trying very hard to hide it.
"Well, actually I only needed to type in the details once, in chronological order. Then I just wrote functions to sort the clients according to name, profit, length of project etcetera," Zoya shrugged. She watched as Asad moved his hand to his mouse tentatively, and then allowed the cursor to hover on top of the icons, unsure of what to do.
"Allah miyan, what's wrong with you Mr Khan?! Abhi abhi toh dikhaya tha na, aise..." Zoya explained again, as she launched herself forward and placed her palm over his hand, helping him to move the mouse as she guided him through the program again. Her free arm had found its way to Asad's shoulder to rest, as she leaned further into him.
Asad tried to concentrate on what Zoya was saying, but her body pressing against his arm as she navigated her way around left him way too distracted. He found himself staring at her face instead of the screen after a while, snapping out of it only when Zoya happened to turn to him.
"Aap... aap mujhe aise kyun dekh rahe the?" Zoya whispered, as she removed her hand from above his and stepped away slightly. Asad pursed his lips, unsure of how to respond. She had clearly caught him staring at her.
"Woh actually, main... mujhe... I'd just turned to you to tell you that I don't want all this fancy stuff, I just want the paper file," Asad finally said, breaking their eye contact as he said it. He heard Zoya click her tongue in disapproval, before turning away and walking towards the door.
"Alright I'll get it for you Mr Dinosaur," Zoya replied matter-of-factly as she shot a scorching glare at him before walking out and slamming the door behind her. Asad shook his head as he stared at the closed door. Only Zoya Farooqui would have the audacity to call her boss a dinosaur.
