Chapter 11 - B
Asad's POV -
I awoke with a start at the sound of several voices across the room. It was already morning and I realized I had slept in the hospital on the chair beside Zoya's bed. Our hands were still intertwined and I felt sadness overcome me at the sight on the bed. Zoya was still asleep looking as white as the sheet and I felt a stab of guilt again.
Unwilling to let go of her hand, I sat up when an elderly nurse entered the room. She smiled at me in and threw a surprised look my way.
"You've slept in here?" she asked in wonder.
I nodded groggily shoving a hand in my hair knowing I must be looking a mess.
"Now what a lucky woman she is," she said nudging on Zoya's direction. "Don't worry the doctor reported that there is no fracture from the scans. You should go and have some proper rest. We gave her some medication and she won't be up till late in the afternoon."
Thanking the nurse, I reluctantly released Zoya's hand and asked the nurse if I could meet the doctor before going.
Nurse - "I am sorry handsome. The doctor's not arrived yet. You can come back at around two in the afternoon and meet him. Your wife will be awake by then."
I opened my mouth to correct her but promptly closed it back. By the look of it, I was acting like someone who cared for Zoya very much and no wonder everybody must be under the same misconception. Ironically, I would have been the loving husband if I had not opted out of the nikaah three years ago.
But bygones were bygones. It was too late for me to speculate on things that could have happened. I hailed a taxi and reached the hotel to get some sleep before heading to the address of Humaira Khan.
After some hours of restless sleep, I headed to the address they had noted but found the house locked. After enquiring in the neighbours, I got to know that the couple who had lived there had moved to Sikandarabad.
Noting the new address, I headed to the taxi and since it was 20 mins drive, I decided I could make it before my visit to the hospital.
When I reached, it took me some time before finding the right family and when I knocked at the door, an elderly woman opened it. My heart sank.
"Hello, I am sorry to be disturbing you. I was looking for a certain Humaira Qureshi."
The woman looked sceptical and I wasn't blaming her. I was only hoping that it was the right house for I would have to set back soon; he wouldn't leave Zoya alone in the hospital.
"I think you are mistaken. There's no one of that name around." And she closed the door unceremoniously at my nose. Damn! It was already early evening and I would have to come back tomorrow and I was cursing myself because in my haste I had forgotten to ask for the name Khan but had instead asked for Qureshi.
Disappointed with myself, I headed back to the hospital feeling neat tired but to my relief Zoya was still sleeping. I had the time to check with her doctor who assured her that she was on strong medication because of the severe pain. They told me I could wait in her room.
I was more than happy to oblige. In my haste, I had forgotten to bring her flowers. Usually I wasn't in for such romantic gestures but Zoya was not well and would appreciate such kind of gesture from my behalf.
Time passed and I waited patiently for Zoya to get up and when she did, she was still groggy and delirious due to the medication.
Zoya - "Asad, what are you doing here? You... didn't come for the Nikaah?"
Ohhh Nooo! What could I answer to that? To someone lying in the hospital; she was clearly hallucinating.
AAK - "Ssshhh, don't tire yourself. We'll talk later."
Zoya - "You left me. Am I hallucinating?"
The nurse told me to go out as I was disrupting her and her mind was still in chaos. Feeling disheartened, I walked out and waited for them to calm her and feed her properly. When they were done, I was called in and she had settled but was still looking fragile. I felt even more helpless after my visit.
The two days that followed were more or less the same; Zoya was still hallucinating under the influence of medication. However, the doctors informed me that her situation was getting better and she was recovering.
Between my trips to the hospital and my work, I had no time to look for the Humaira. Come Sunday, I decided to leave for the address in Sikandarabad again after I had confirmed with the neighbors again that it was the correct address.
This time, instead of the elderly woman, I was greeted by a young woman looking in her late twenties. I smiled politely and introduced myself. Thankfully, the lady was more polite and welcoming.
AAK - "I am sorry to be disturbing you. I am here to look for Humaira."
Humaira nodded and let me in.
Humaira - "I am Humaira Khan. But I am sorry I don't remember you."
AAK - "Oh, no. You wouldn't know me, I...I don't know where to begin. I was here three days ago but an elderly lady greeted me and.."
Humaira nodded quickly. "That would be my mother. She's not very polite with strangers."
"I can't say I blame her." I had no idea where to begin.
Humaira crossed her arms and faced me waiting for me to state my business.
"Well, actually I am looking for Humaira Qureshi," I began and watched as the woman's eyes widen in shock or surprise I couldn't really fathom.
"What business would you be having with her?" Humaira queried and I felt some of the tension leave my body. At least I hadn't been thrown out of the house like last time. She was still willing to talk to me and hear my part of story.
"Well, I have a ... friend," I hesitated on the word at my description of my relationship with Zoya. Friend was far from what she was to me but I wasn't going in details with a complete stranger.
Humaira nodded encouraging me to go on.
AAK - "She is the daughter of Gaffur Siddiqui."
At the mention of the name, it was as if I had cursed Humaira. Her whole body went rigid with shock and anger. At that moment, I confirmed all doubts I had about her being Zoya's sister. They were totally different except for the hair, Humaira had the same hair as Zoya.
Humaira - "So he in the one who has sent you?"
AAK - "No no no. He is dead. He has mentioned you in his will." And I poured out the story to her.

A few days later, Zoya was feeling better and was recovering from the after effects of the medications. Asad had visited her everyday even spending the nights at the hospital on that damned uncomfortable chair.
Asad was glad that Zoya was now getting better. He had finally found out the sister and was apprehensive of the moment they would meet. Humaira Qureshi Khan had been quite unemotional about the fact that her father had died. Her mother Sheerin Qureshi, the elderly woman who had opened the door to Asad the first time had narrated to him how much of a bas***d had been Gaffur Siddiqui.
Basically, they had the same sob story as every Gaffur' wife. It was nothing new. The bas***d had done the same thing to sheerin Qureshi as he had done with Dilshaad. Except that Sheerin was stronger than Dilshaad or had not loved Gaffur as much as my ammi had.
"Hi Zoya" Asad greeted as he entered the hospital room.
She straightened herself on the bed and greeted me with a "hello". Zoya had been subdued and quiet since her recovery. Only responding when she was addressed to. On top of that, she had lost some weight and her face was slender. Asad wondered how she would react to the news of her sister being found. Would it make Zoya happy? Or would it depress her more?
It was with difficulty that Zoya was learning to be back on her feet. She was able to walk again but was limping and could not do much effort as she was easily tired.
Without much preamble Asad said in grave voice, "Have got someone to meet you."
