Part 5
Two days had passed since Zoya's dream but she still seemed torn. She wanted to tell her Ammi and Abbu about Asad but if they didn't approve, she didn't have the heart to hurt them. Even Humeria was not here to give her advice since Ayaan and Humeria had left for their honeymoon and Zoya didn't want to disturb her best friends.
Fragments of her dream played in her mind continuously leaving her restless; how her Abbu had told her to be with Asad, how lovingly he had said that he forgave her but yet Zoya couldn't face her parents or Asad. Asad was supposed to fly out tonight but Zoya hadn't heard from him since their confrontation at the lake. She sighed heavily as she slumped onto her bed, seems even he has given up on them.
She was about to put her hand under her pillow to pull her most treasured photo frame when a knock stopped her. Everyone in this house knocked on Zoya's door when it was closed, even Humeria. Such were the house rules.
"Come in"
Anwar Abbu walked in and Zoya sat up straighter, wondering why her Abbu was making a rare appearance to her room. They shared a wonderful bond, not at the level of what Zoya had with Guffur Abbu but a beautiful relationship nonetheless.
Anwar Abbu sat next to her on the bed and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Are you happy, Zoya?" Have we been good parents to you?"
Zoya was confused, why was her Abbu suddenly asking her these questions ? Could they have found out about Asad? Only two people could have told them the truth and neither would have said a word without her permission.
She reached for her father's hand, "Why would you ask such questions ? You have loved me just like Ammi and Abbu, you haven't let me miss them even for a day."
Zoya's eyes welled up, her Abbu's dream still fresh on her mind.
"But you aren't happy ?"
It seemed more like a statement rather than a question. Zoya was unsure how much her parents observed her in the last two days. Yeah, she hasn't been her chirpy self but she brushed her gloomy mood on her best friend/sister getting married and hoped everyone believed her.
"We are your parents, Zoe and we know our children. I won't ask questions but you should know, we want our daughter to be happy, always be happy."
"Always be happy.", Those were the parting words of Abbu in her dream. And now Anwar Abbu was repeating the exact words. Was Allah giving her a sign ?
"Abbu", Unable to express her feelings, she just hugged her father close. She felt so blessed at the moment.
"Abbu, I love you."
"I love you too, my princess. Now where is that smile your Abbu loves so much ?"
She flashed her killer dimple wali smile and her Abbu pecked her forehead. Now, she knew how much her happiness meant to her parents and she had been stupid all along. She only had a few hours before Asad went away, possibly forever.

Asad gathered the last of his things from the guest room, organizing them neatly in his carryon. After Ayaan had left the next day after his wedding for his honeymoon, Asad had spent the two days with Zainbab Ammi. He called her Ammi because after his years of friendship with Ayaan, Zainbab Ammi always said that she has two sons and always treated him like a son.
Asad sighed as he slumped down on the bed. Through the two days, he kept hoping to hear from Zoya. The Farooquis had visited the next day with breakfast, but Zoya was nowhere to be seen. So after their encounter at the lake, Asad was yet to see her. And she seemed determined to keep it that way and it was time to respect her wishes.
"Asad beta, come down for dinner." Zainbab Ammi hollered.
"Coming, Ammi"
He stood up, just then his phone vibrated with a text message. It was from an unknown number but he opened it anyway.
Please meet me at the lake tonight. I would like to see you one last time, to say goodbye. Hope you will give me the chance.- Zoya
**********
I parked at the lake just as the sun was biding farewell, throwing wonderful hues of oranges and yellows at the horizon. The dipping sun was leaving a beautiful reflection on the water. I took a deep breath, readying myself to see Zoya one last time. I was only here because of her, because she wanted this. Such is the power of love.
I walked down the pebble-stoned pathway towards the lake and Zoya soon came into view and she smiled a soft, hesitant smile at the sight of me. She stood with her back against the sinking sun, like a silhouette in the fading light. But it wasn't just Zoya I noticed. There was a small bonfire that Zoya had started, with a blanket laid out nearby and a picnic basket placed on it. And a shawl folded neatly on top of the basket. I took a step or two towards her before I stopped dead in my tracks. That shawl.
That shawl looked oddly familiar. That's what I realized it. The worn out threads of brown and orange, the hideous combination of the shawl was a memento of the Asad-Zoya that once were. This same shawl was from the camp trip that had once cocooned us with warmth on a cool night.
I raised my shocked eyes from the shawl to meet Zoya's tearful eyes. She had kept the shawl all this time, in my memory. Unknowingly, my eyes welled up, making Zoya blur in my vision. I blinked them away rapidly to bring her into focus again. Was Zoya doing what I think she say ? Is she recreating our camping trip night ?
"Hi", I spoke softly, just a notch higher than a whisper.
She stared at me mutely, her tears now flowing freely but she made no attempt to wipe them. Then she ran with urgency right into my arms, flinging her arms around my neck. My arms hang limp against my sides. It took a moment or two to realize that Zoya was hugging me fiercely, as if she would never let go. She was hugging me the way I have dreamt of in the last ten years. As reality of the moment hit, I wound my arms her petite frame, bringing her closer though there wasn't even an inch between us. I buried my face in her lavender scented hair, tempted to hug her tighter until we both couldn't breathe.
"I love you, Asad. I never stopped loving you, even for a day."
I drew back and cradled her face in my palm, gently wiping her tears with my thumbs. "I love you too, Zoya."
She clutched my hands that were still holding her face, smiling and crying at the same time.
I am not sure who moved first, but seconds later; our lips touched one another in a sweet union. Sweet, gentle and unbelievably real. It lasted a few seconds but it made up for the lost ten years.
"Who knew my Zoya became such a skilled liar in the time we apart?", I chuckled softly.
"What?" Confusion furrowed her eyebrows.
I reached for her hands, holding them in the gap between our chests, "Well, someone messaged me asking to meet here...to say goodbye."
She gasped softly shaking her head, clutching my hands tighter, misunderstanding my jest. "I never wanted to say goodbye to you, not ten years ago". She settled her head on chest and tilted her face up to look into my eyes. "And definitely not now."
I smiled down at her, "I like the way you think." I leant down to brush my nose against hers in a Eskimo kiss. I felt giddy, grinning like a fool, overwhelmed with happiness that had come after so many years. Zoya and I had finally found our way back to each other. Destiny had brought us together again, and this time forever.
Hand in hand, we made our way to the laid out blanket. I sat down and pulled her down gently, letting her back rest against my chest as I wound my arms around her waist bring her closer. Sitting there in each other's arms with the setting sun as witness, we brought our love to life again. We went back in the past, and thought of our younger, happier days. And we dreamt of the future, the future of togetherness.
Seven months later
Zoya sat on the bed in her heavy bridal attire awaiting the arrival of her husband. She heard the door crack open and she quickly covered her face with her veil. She then heard him approaching their martial bed and felt the bed weigh down as he sat. He brought his hands forward to lift her veil up slowly and they stared into each other's eyes with love.
"Zoya", he whispered.
**********
Zoya's life has changed rapidly since Humeria's wedding. Ever since Zoya has seen her father in her dream giving her approval to be with Asad; she had told Asad he had to ask her parents for her hand in marriage. She would only marry him if her parents agreed. Only to Zoya's surprise and no one else's, her parents agreed right away happy that their second daughter had found a man who would keep her happy. The next seven months passed by as they both came back to Bhopal and spent every possible moment together making up for the ten years they had lost. Asad wanted to get married the next day saying he couldn't a chance of losing his Zoya again but the Farooquis and Dilshad requested for a grand wedding. And indeed a grand wedding it had been for the whole Bhopal to see.
**********
"I love you, Zoya", I whispered close to her ear before I nibbled on it. She moaned softly in response
"I love you too Asad.", she whispered back as she trailed her hand along my stubble.
"I still can't believe you are finally mine, Mrs. Zoya Asad Ahmed Khan.", I said as I lay next to her, with my arms around her delicate frame.
"Well you better believe it Mr. Khan because I am all yours now.", she said lovingly as she kissed my chest and cuddled closer .
**********
I opened my eyes slowly as I felt the sunrays on my face. I started to stretch but I found myself imprisoned as Asad had one leg thrown over my leg, his face buried in the crook of my neck and an arm draped around my waist, holding me close.
Even in his sleep, I knew he was afraid to let me go. I sighed happily as I felt his even breath against my neck. I grazed down at him lovingly, content that we were now one. I tried to move myself out of his embrace hoping not to wake him up but it was impossible. He had me pined down..literally.
So I gave up and enjoyed the sight I was seeing from the first time in my life; waking up in the arms of her husband. I trailed my index finger very lightly along his forehead and then his long, straight nose, and then his stubble and finally stopping at his luscious lips. I lightly ran my thumb over his lower lip tempted to kiss him awake.
I leaned in closer and just when I was about to touch my lips with his, he eyes snapped open and he stared at me while I blushed at being caught. I tore my eyes away from his intense ones, pulling my hand away from his lips like it was on fire. It was one thing to try to kiss you husband while he was unaware, and it was another thing to look into his eyes and still manage to not blush. I tried to move myself to create distance but he held me tight.
"What's wrong Mrs. Khan? Why did you stop?", he asked with a smirk and mischief in his eyes.
"Asad, behave yourself", I said as I attempted to get up.
"I behave myself?", he asked in shock. "And it was you who was checking me out early in the morning. I went along with it till a certain point but then I decided I wanted to be awake when my wife was kissing me.", he whispered at the end and brought his face close just leaving a inch of space.
I closed the distance and our lips met. He kissed me slowly and gently savoring every moment of it as he held me by the waist.
"This has to be the best morning of my life.", he said when we broke apart.
I hummed in response closing my eyes and resting my head on his sturdy shoulder.
"I think we should make it better", he said as he leaned over me.
"Oh no, you don't", I said with a laugh as I pushed him off and ran to the washroom.
*********
She came out of the washroom dressed in a red ankarali while I was sitting on the bed with my laptop, still in my sleeping attire of white kurta and trousers. She smiled a sweet smile as she saw me gazing at her, appreciating her simple beauty. My wife was truly one of a kind and I was a lucky man. Then without a word, she walked to the dresser and started to pick up her brush.
I walked over and stopped her as I picked up the brush instead. I stood behind her as I started running the brush through her soft tresses as I sniffed in her fruity shampoo. Then I picked up her diamond earnings and slipped them on as I dropped light kisses on them and on her earslobes as well. She quietly watched me as I picked up her choker and placed it over her head. I went behind her to tighten the string and kissed her nape. Lastly, I picked up her engagement ring and wedding band, slipping them on before planting a soft kiss on her hand
"You look beautiful Mrs. Khan. I love you", I said before I kissed her forehead and wrapped my arms around her.
"I love you too", she whispered.
They say two people that are meant to be together eventually find their way back to each other. Asad and Zoya meet, fell in love, separated and yet found their way back to each other.
Well, what can we say? Asad and Zoya's love story is just a simple story of love.
Well, this is it for this story. I hope you all enjoyed it. Do let me know how you liked it.😳
Much love,
