PART 30: An early update.
ASAD! A shocked Dilshaad walked out of the front door. Najmas jaw dropped to her knees when she saw her bhaijaan straddled upon a semi conscious and wounded Ram Singh.
Asads hands were bruised and stained with blood. His hair still wet from the rain, clothes muddy and torn, eyes red and swollen, a thick stubble on his face but he was still their Asad- their Asad whom they thought had left forever.
BHAIJAAN! Najma was the first one to run into his arms. Dilshaad was still in a state of shock. Tears of joy rolled down her eyes. After having lost her husband and then son, she had resigned to the fact that her life was meant to be tragic. This was no less than a miracle.
Ya Allah! Tere darbar mein der hai lekin andher nahin. She raised her palms in prayer and thanked Allah.
Bhaijaan kahan the aap itne din? Why didnt the Navy inform us of your whereabouts? Maine kitne messages chode the unke liye. Najma lost all control of her emotions.
Asad remained silent, picked his hysterical sister by one arm and walked over to Dilshaad. The three of them shared an emotional and tearful embrace. Silently, they bawled and cried to release five long years of a painful separation. Dilshaad was just happy to have him back.
The neighbors were thrilled for Dilshaad and one of them called the police.
Asad released himself from the embrace and after composing himself, spoke to the cops, please inform the intelligence services about this man. Aur kisne isey bheja hai, yeh bhi pata lagaiye Inspector saheb. He could be an important witness.
Yes sir! The cops dragged the limp and wounded man away.
Asad, is bechare driver ki kya galti thi? Finally Dilshaad questioned him. Her initial reaction to the brawl had been overshadowed by Asads reappearance.
Ammi, yahi pata lagaana hai. Bahut lambi kahani hai. Lets go inside.
He placed his arms around the two women and walked back into his beloved home after five long years.
After more hugs and kisses, he went upstairs to his room. Everything was still the same. Ammi and Najma had not touched or moved anything. Perhaps, it was their way of dealing with their sorrow or as Zoya put it- helped them remain hopeful about his return.
Asad showered and scrubbed himself thoroughly. Now that he was back home, five years seemed like five days. Boy, was he glad to be back home. This was the best thing that happened to him in years. Of course the pain of watching Zoya walk away with someone else was still fresh, but being with his family acted as a balm.
After changing into a fresh pair of jeans and a white shirt, Asad walked into the dining area.
Ammi. Bahut bhookh lagi hai. Aapke haath ka khaana khaane ke liye taras gaya hoon main.
Batao kya khaaoge?
All my favorite things. He smiled.
Bhaijaan, yeh stubble permanent hai kya? Najma teased her brother.
Kyun tumhein tumhara chikna mil gaya na? So, let me keep this for myself.
Bhaijaan? Najmas eyes popped wide, matlab, aap ko Karan ke baare mein maloom hai?
Oh, so his name is Karan?
Najma blushed a little, jee bhaijaan. I know he is a Hindu but---
Tumhein pasand hai na? Aur agar usey meri tamatar pasand hai, tho wo aadmi theek thaak hi hoga. He teased her back.
Bhaijaan! Najma pouted, itne saal baad bhi mazaak karne ki aadat nahin gayi aapki.
Asad placed his hand on her head. You and ammi are the only normal thing in my life right now. His expression was more serious.
Bhaijaan. I cant even imagine aap itne din kahan the?
Kabhie fursat mein bataunga. He sighed, now like a good sister, get me some bandaids and antiseptic ointments.
Abhi laayi! Over excited by the morning surprise, Najma ran to pick the first aid box. On the way, she called Karan Wahi to give him the good news.
Bhaijaan, Ram Singh has been our driver for almost 4 years now. He is a very nice man. Aapko koi galat fehmi huyi hai. As Najma tended to her brothers wounds, she tried to reason with him.
How did you find him?
Uh-wo- I think he found us somehow. Oh yeah, Dr. Ali recommended him.
Dr. Ali? Asad asked.
Haan, ammi ka surgeon. Remember wo jab aap ship par gaye gaye the?
Oh, yes of course. He vividly remembered the flirtatious doctor. If it were not for Dr. Ali, he would have never proposed to Zoya that eventful day but of course it wasnt meant to be.
Bhaijaan, why are you suspicious of Ram Singh. Humein tho kabhie aisa mehsoos nahin hua.
Its a long story Najma. I just want you guys to be safe.
Dilshaad joined them at the table.
Asad, tumhare favorite kababs banaye hain maine. Kabhie socha na tha mera beta wapas ghar aa jaayega. Allah ki hum par bahut badhi rehmat huyi hai beta. I cant tell you how happy I am. Hum sab ne tho umeed hi chhod di thi. She became a bit emotional.
Except Zoya! Najma quipped.
Asad recoiled a bit when he heard her name, Z-oya?
Yes bhaijaan. She was the only one who didnt lose hope. She always said you would be back one day.
H-ave y-ou b-een in touch with her? He asked hesitantly.
Najma and Dilshaad exchanged glances and remained silent.
Kya hua? He asked.
Beta, galti meri hai. Dilshaad narrated the incidents after Asads departure. How Ghafoor Siddiqui had walked into their house, how she had thrown Zoya out of their house and then banished her from their lives forever after Asads news. Asad felt really bad for Zoya. Again, he kicked himself for his mistake. He should have told ammi about her father. It was not Zoyas fault that her father was the most disliked person in their house.
Bhaijaan, Zoya was our strength in those days. Jab-jab, Najma choked, they asked us to identify a body at the morgue, she was the only one---bhaijaan that was the most difficult day for us. She hid all her fears and braved it for us. I cant even imagine what she must have gone through at that moment. I could barely speak or walk. She lived through hell that day but even though they found your wallet, she insisted it was not you. Usney DNA report bhi dekhne se bhi mana kar diya.
Asad felt his face flush; the tip of his nose turned red as a beetroot. His throat was on fire. He tried his best to hide his tears. His heart went out for the 21-year-old girl who had to endure such a horrific experience. He knew she did it for his family and for him.
Beta, main nahin chaahti thi wo tumhari ammi ki tarah poori zindagi ek bevaa bankar rahe. I had to let her go. Wo tumhein bahut chaahti thi Asad. Mera bhi yahi mann tha ki wo is ghar ki bahu bane lekin"
THO PHIR KYUN JAANE DIYA USEY? He slammed his fist into the dining table, breaking a large chip of wood from the corner.
Dilshaad and Najma were stunned by his reaction. They had never seen him this angry. He had probably endured a lot of pain in these past five years. Dilshaad, a well-read lady, was aware of Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)- soldiers often experienced it after a war or imprisonment. Uncontrollable fits of anger and erratic behavior were a hallmark of PTSD.
Beta. Zara sabr karo. Gusse se koi problem solve nahin hoti. Ab tum ghar aa gaye ho. We will take care of everything. Jo hona tha ho gaya. Ab aage ki sochte hain beta. Dilshaad placed her hand over her sons head. Seated on a chair, he buried his head in his ammis tummy, sobbing loudly, aapne kyun jaane diya usey. Roka kyun nahin?
Gently, she caressed his hair and kissed his forehead, Asad beta, main aur kya karti? Us bechari ki poori zindagi thi uskey saamne. Perhaps, we can contact her now. Ho sakta hai wo abhi bhi tumhara intezaar kar rahi ho beta. I know she loved you a lot.
Haan bhaijaan. Najma came forward and touched his shoulder, I know she is still in Mumbai. She paid for ammis treatment. Ammi ka bone marrow transplant was very expensive for us but I know she funded the whole thing. Although wo hamare saath nahin hai, lekin in paanch saalon mein Zoya ne hamara saath nahin choda hai. I know she has been watching us from somewhere.
Asad wiped his tears and sat up, ab bahut der ho chuki hai.
Bhaijaan. Lets find her na? Najma pleaded, I really want to meet her. I am sure she will be the happiest person to know that you are back.
Koi faayda nahin.
Asad beta. Dil chota nahin karte. Dilshaad caressed his back affectionately.
Uska nikaah ho gaya hai. Kisi aur ke saath. He blinked his eyes rapidly to hide his tears.
Oh no! Najma almost lost her balance, aur humein pata bhi nahin chala?
Ya Allah! Nikaah kab hua? Dilshaad shut her eyes, lekin us bechari ki taraf se bhi tho socho. Aakhir kab tak intezaar karti? Aur maine bhi tho usey itna bura bhala kaha tha. She is a practical girl.
I know ammi. I dont blame her. Waise bhi America mein pali badhi hai. People there dont waste time in moving on.
Aapko kaise maloom bhaijaan? Najma asked.
I met her. With her four year old child.
Four year old? Najma was shocked, matlab usney bahut jald hi nikaah kar liya hoga. Lekin kyun? I dont believe it bhaijaan. Zoya itni jaldi aapko nahin bhool paayi hogi. Aapko koi galat fehmi huyi hai.
Nahin Najma. Meri aankhon ko koi galat fehmi nahin huyi hai.
Kahan mile aap Zoya se? Can I please meet her? Najma pleaded.
Abhi nahin Najma. Its a bit complicated.
Kya matlab complicated? Aap kuch chupa rahe hain bhaijaan. I will not believe anything till I speak with her. Aapne poocha Zoya se?
Poochne ko kuch nahin bacha Najma. He rubbed his forehead and wiped his face, anyways, I am tired. I dont want to talk about her anymore. Waise bhi mera kaam abhi adhoora hai. I want to get some rest before I go back to work.
Bhaijaan? Kaam? Najma was stunned, abhi tho wapas aaya hain. How heartless are these Navy people. Aap abhi nahin jaa sakte.
Haan beta. Kuch din ghar par raho. Aaram kar lo. Main bhi Zoya se milna chaahti hoon. Kahan hai wo? Kaun hai uska shauhar? Dilshaad came forward.
Not yet ammi. Main jis mission par gaya tha, wo abhi incomplete hai aur-aur-Zoya is involved with the enemy.
Enemy? Najma and Dilshaad echoed, stunned.
Kuch aisa hi samajh lee jiye. I cant risk your lives right now. Aap log abhi Zoya se bikul nahin milenge, aur na hi usey contact karenge. UNDERSTAND? He slammed his fist on the table again.
ASAD! Dilshaad was shocked to see the change in her son, tumhari maansik halat theek nahin hai. Paanch saal mein tumney kaafi trauma saha hai beta. I think we need to consult some doctor. Aisi halat mein tum important decisions lene laayak bhi nahin ho. Kaun hai yeh dushman? Why would Zoya get involved with an enemy?
JAAN NA CHAAHTI HAI AAP AMMI? Asad gnashed his teeth angrily, THIS ENEMY TRIED TO KILL YOUR SON! HE BLEW UP OUR SHIP! HE IS NONE OTHER THAN YOUR HUSBAND MR. RASHID AHMED KHAN! AND YOUR DARLING ZOYA IS HIS DAUGHTER IN LAW, WIFE OF HIS YOUNGER SON, AYAAN KHAN!
TRUCK RIDE WITH AYAAN, ZOYA & FARHAN
After Ayaan picked them up from the guesthouse, Zoya insisted on being dropped at her house.
Are you sure Zoya? Why dont you get some rest at our house. Subah hote hi chale jaana.
No Ayaan! I want to go home. Farhan ko bhi main rakh leti hoon. Waise bhi 1-2 din mein Humeira aa jaayegi. I would like to send some time with him.
Theek hai Zoya. Ayaan gave her a wary look, everything okay? Delhi trip mein koi problem huyi thi kya? You look a bit upset.
No, she gave him a faint smile, I am fine. Just exhausted and wet.
Alright! I will send AK to your house later. He can pick Farhaan up.
How did you find this man? Zoya asked.
Uh-well-probably through the ad. Kyun?
Kuch nahin. She averted her eyes; she knew Ayaan had never met Asad. For some reason, she didnt want to reveal Asads identity without his consent. Even though Ayaan was like family now, her loyalty towards Asad would always take priority. Perhaps, there was a reason why Asad had introduced himself as AK. But why didnt Rashid uncle recognize him? Maybe, their paths had not crossed yet. Her anger was directed at Asad, not at AK. Even if he had reasons to hide his identity, but why did he consider her an outsider? Did he not trust her? Didnt he have faith in her love for him? Did she even matter to him?
Why? Do you have any doubts about him? Ayaan asked.
No, not at all, she pursed her lips to hide her emotions and stared out the window, I know he will never let you down. Farhan ko AK se behter bodyguard nahin mil sakta.
Yeah. He is really good with Farhan too. They hit it off instantly.
Zoya held her tears till they reached home
Thanks Ayaan. Zoya alighted the truck and picked Farhan in her arms.
Al right. Get some rest. Ayaan waved them both a goodbye, lets go driver.
ZOYAS STUDIO:
With Farhan in bed, a restless and distraught Zoya went to her secret studio, her sanctuary from her sorrows and grief. A place that had always calmed her nerves, given her solace on the loneliest of nights, aggravated her agitation further.
She slammed the door behind her and collapsed on the ground. With his photographs all over the walls, his incomplete portrait in one corner of the studio, he was everywhere. Thats how she had always wanted it to be- his memories in every corner of her Taj Mahal.
Was it all an illusion then?
Why is an illusion always more pleasant than the reality?
Maybe he shouldnt have returned.
He had no right to shatter her dreams.
Why did she ever fall in love with him?
Maine apne aapko, apne wajood ko, sab kuch Mr. Khan ke liye mitaa diya, lekin hamare darmiyan yeh faasle hamesha ki tarah hi kyun hain? WHY? WHY? Wasnt he happy to see me? Did he forget that I had promised him I would wait for him? Did he forget he wanted me to be Mrs. Khan? Aakhir aisi kya majboori ho sakti hai insaan ki? Aisi majboori ki wo apno ka dil baar baar thod sakta hai?

Kaisi teri khudgarzi
Na dhoop chune na chhaaon
Kaisi teri khudgarzi
Kisi thor tike na paaon (x2)
Ban liya apna paigambar
Tar liya tu saat samandar
Phir bhi sookha mann ke andar
Kyun reh gaya
Re Kabira maan jaa
Re Faqeera maan jaa
Aaja tujhko pukaare teri parchhaaiyan
Re Kabira maan ja
Re Faqeera maan ja
Kaisa tu hai nirmohi kaisa harjaaiya
Mujhey aapki koi nishaani nahin chaahiye ab. Whats the point of worshiping all these pictures when the real man cant even speak the truth?
In anger, she got up and knocked down the easel with his incomplete portrait. The canvas came down with a loud clamor. She picked a can of black paint to smear it all over his portrait. She had no plans of completing that portrait anymore.
Farhan heard the loud noise and woke up with a startle. He ran out of the bedroom, AMMI! AMMI! AMMI! On an instinct, he turned the latch on the studio and walked in.
AMMI! AMMI! He was visibly scared. Zoya was about to dump the can of paint on the portrait when Farhan ran in, shrieking and hollering her name.
Farhan beta? She left the can and ran to her nephew, I am so sorry beta. Did I scare you? She lifted him in her arms and hugged him snugly.
Mr. Khan! Mr. Khan! He muttered against her shoulder. He stared at the portrait lying on the floor.
Zoya held him closer and comforted him, sorry beta Mr. Khan has gone forever. He will never come back. He is AK now. She rocked him gently and turned the lights off to the studio.
As she walked back to her bedroom with Farhan in her arms, she heard him mumble, Mr. Khan-ammi-Mr. Khan-ammi-Mr Khan-ammi. Little Farhan had just saved her most precious piece of art- her masterpiece that lay incomplete without the master and the subject. At least, he had locked them in his link of words he had mastered so well.
RASHIDS HOUSE:
Ram Singh is in the hospital. He has been badly wounded. Police case bhi ban gaya hai ab. A telephone call from one of Rashids trusted men informed him
Kya? Rashid was stunned, pata lagao wo aadmi kaun tha Dilshaad ke ghar ke bahar? Ram Singh is a very strong man. This is impossible! Make sure Ram Singh doesnt reveal any information to the police. Samajh gaye na? He hung up, worried, kaun hai jo Dilshaad ke ghar aaya hoga? Koi trained aadmi hi hoga. Chota mota chor Ram Singh ki yeh halat nahin kar sakta. RAZIA!
Rashids anger had no bounds as he concluded that Razia had tried to hurt his family.
Rashid went into his private chamber and called Razia.
Arre Rashid, itni subah subah kaise yaad kiya?
Razia! Tumne mujhey promise kiya tha ki Dilshaad par kabhie hamla nahin karogi. You know I can reveal all your secrets to the intelligence.
Oh, so yeh baat hai? Razia laughed, Rashid mian, aaj kal kadki ka zamaana hai. Mere paas time nahin hai Dilshaad ke peeche bhaagne ka. Tumhein koi galat fehmi huyi hai. Balki jo aadmi mere kabze mein tha, wo bhi bhaag gaya.
I dont care about your personal prisoners. I want you to stop all attacks on my family, or else main tumhari saari kartooton ko report kar doonga.
Wah Rashid mian! Aur aap? Sau choohe khaakar billi haj ko chali? Aur aapki kartootein? Aap bhi koi doodh ke dhule nahin hain.
I dont care about myself anymore. I dont care if I die but you stay away from Dilshaad and my family. Main waise hi apna beta kho chuka hoon.
Aur Zoya?
Zoya? How do you know Zoya?
She smirked. Tumhare arthouse ki nayi star hai na wo? Ghafoor ki beti hai wo. Uski eklauti jaayaz aulaad.
Uski tumse kya dushmani?
Ghafoor se tho hai na.
Ghafoor se? Rashid laughed sardonically, tumhari do betiyon ka baap?
Haan, aur gaddar!
Gaddar?
Zeenat ke saath ab wo Istanbul mein hai. That prisoner I was talking about? Ghafoor tipped the intelligence service about him. I dont have time for Dilshaad right now. Ghafoor and his daughter need to be taken care of before he creates more problems for me! Samjhe?
to be contd.
