Chapter 21 Off to the Farmhouse
Asad looked at his watch and realized he had been driving for two hours straight and his eyes were drooping. He had to stop otherwise he would cause an accident. He stopped the car at the side of the road and noticed that there was no one around. He turned around and heard some mumbling. He realized Ms. Farooki was starting to gain consciousness. He saw her open her eyes and look around fearfully till her eyes met his and then she calmed down. Before she asked, he said, "I am taking you to the farmhouse. We are on our way there."
"But, where is Najma, she was supposed to go with me." said Zoya.
"She is busy with studies, will join you later." lied Asad. There was no point telling Zoya that Najma would never come because Ms. Farooki would argue and refuse to go.
"ok. I'm thirsty." said Zoya. Asad brought out a water bottle and handed it to her. She tried to open the lid fumbling because her hands were shaking. Asad noticed she was having difficulty and took the bottle from her hand. He opened it and put it close to her mouth. She looked up at him and tried to take the bottle but he pushed her hand away. "Drink it." he ordered.
She drank thirstily. Asad looked at the liquid disappearing in the bottle and realized she must have been really thirsty.
Once it was all done, he closed it and put it away. She then looked around and asked him, "where are we?"
"We are on our way to the farmhouse. I just took a break because I was so tired and sleepy. Why dont you lie back down and we will be on our way." he said.
"Why dont you splash some water on your face and you will be fresh and ready to go." said Zoya.
Asad looked at Zoya and gave her a tiny smile, "That is a good Idea, Ms. Farooki."
Zoya was shocked beyond belief. Mr. Akdu khan had smiled. Even though it was a slight smile, it totally transformed his face. Wow. He was simply gorgeous. She had never seen him smile. No wonder because it was deadly. It was creating havoc inside her. Could you imagine how she would react if he actually smiled or God forbid laugh. That would totally kill her.
She turned away and busied herself by putting her blanket around her feet. She then hesitantly asked, "can I sit up front?"
Asad looked at her and was about to retort a curt reply but when he saw her face, he kept quiet and nodded. He opened his car door and walked around to help her.
As soon as he got her settled, he got his seat belt on and started driving.
After another hour or so, Asad's hands had cramped up and he realized there was no way he would be able to drive more. He stopped the car and flexed his hands. He looked around and noticed a couple of buildings that looked like motels as well as some food carts. Zoya slowly stirred and sat up. She stretched her arms and looked around. She saw Asad flexing his muscles and realized he was having cramps. Without thinking, she took his hands and said, "Are your hands cramping up Mr. Khan? I can massage them. I get that a lot since I am always on the computer." As she was talking, she was massaging his fingers and his hands. Asad felt the warmth of her hands seeping into his. Together with that, he felt his heart stirring and sparks shooting up his arms. Zoya suddenly stopped, realizing what she was doing. She felt the sparks too and quickly let go of his hand. "I'm s..o..rr..y." she muttered.
Asad noticed her discomfort and did not say anything. This girl evoked so many different sensations in him that he never knew he had. He realized his hand felt fine. No more cramps. He opened the car door and got out to stretch his legs. He walked over to Zoya's side and asked her if she wanted to step out for a bit. She nodded and he helped her out. She had to lean on him since she was still a little wobbly.
"Mr. Khan, look! there is a motel there. We can stay the night there and then drive again." said Zoya.
"What?" shouted Asad. "No way. We will continue our journey. We are not staying anywhere."
"Mr. Khan, I am hungry, Can we get something from that food stall. Those pani puri's look devine." said zoya.
"No!!" shouted Asad. "Ammi has food in the car. We can eat that."
He quickly maneuvered her back to the car and helped her in. He then went to the back and got the cooler where his ammi had put food. Although it was a bit cold by now but still eatable. He gave a samosa to Zoya with a napkin and took one for himself. Zoya ate greedily. She was so hungry. Asad noticed a potato piece stuck on her lip and gently used his napkin to clean it. She looked up, surprised. He quickly went back to eating. Asad took another one and handed it to Zoya. She practically snatched it out of his hand and in three bites had wolfed it down. After a few mins, Zoya realized she had practically eaten 10 samosas and Mr. Khan had barely eaten any.
When Asad pointed to the samosa asking her if she wanted more, she shook her head. She gulped some water and settled herself. Asad got back in the car and took out a hand sanitizer from the glove compartment. He squirted some on his hands and held it out for Zoya who put her hand forward for Asad to squirt some on her hands. Zoya smiled. She could not believe that she lived in New york and was not that dirt conscious as Mr. Khan was, living in India.
They drove for another half an hour when Asad's phone rang. He could not answer it as he was driving and he had forgotten his bluetooth in his other car. Zoya noticed the phone ringing and asked him to answer it.
He did not reply. The phone kept ringing and ringing. "Mr. Khan. The ringing of the phone is giving me a headache. Can you please answer it?" shouted Zoya.
" I am driving, cant you see Ms. Farooki. I cannot answer it." replied Asad.
"Where is it, let me answer it." said Zoya.
"No, I will answer it when I stop somewhere." replied Asad.
"I said I will answer it and hold it for you to talk. Where is the phone?" asked Zoya.
Without thinking, Asad blurted out, "In my pants pocket."
Zoya quickly turned and was about to put her hands in his hand pocket when it clicked to her the location of the phone. She curled her fingers away and placed them back in her lap. Her cheeks felt hot and she knew she was blushing. Asad held the steering wheel with one hand and pulled out the phone. He answered it and placed it on speaker.
It was his ammi asking how they were and if everything was ok. They reassured her they were fine and would call her when they reached.
As soon as Asad shut off the phone, the car started sputtering and suddenly stopped.
Asad tried to start it again but no luck. There was smoke coming out from the front. He quickly got out and went to check.
He could not see what was going on and he had no clue since he knew nothing about cars. Zoya opened the door and Asad shouted, "Stay right there Ms. Farooki. "
"But I want to see what's wrong." said Zoya.
"There is a lot of smoke and if I dont know what is wrong, how will you?" said Asad.
"Umm, can I take a look please, I know a little about cars and maybe I can help." said Zoya.
"Look Ms. Farooki, this is not a toy car. It is a real car. So just stay put and I will do something." said Asad.
"Hello, Mr. Khan, incase you have not noticed, we are in the middle of nowhere, what will you do?" asked Zoya.
"Just leave that to me." said Asad.
"Look, Mr. Khan, let me take a look, please." said Zoya and slowly maneuvered herself from the side to the front, holding on to the car for support. Asad glared at her. This girl never listened. She always did what she wanted.
She quickly looked at the car and pulled out the oil dipstick. She noticed that the oil was low and secondly the coolant was low too. There seemed to be a belt hanging loose and deduced that the timer belt was broken and needed to be replaced. As she is mentioning all this, Asad looked at her in awe. She never ceased to amaze him. This misfit knew about cars. Unbelievable. Asad then asked her what they should do and she said, "nothing, because there is no mechanic around. Asad noticed a sign that said DILS FARM and there was an arrow pointing to the East. He realized they were about an hour away and could easily walk. He quickly turned to tell Zoya and before he could do that, he realized she had a cast and it would be difficult for her to walk.
"What is it Mr. Khan?" asked Zoya.
"Nothing." replied Asad.
"You were thinking something. I noticed in your eyes. Spill it." said Zoya.
"No it's ok. Was just thinking we are an hour away from the farmhouse and could walk but you have a cast and it would be difficult for you." replied Asad.
"Well Mr. Khan, we will have to try slowly because otherwise there is nothing here so cannot stay here all night and all day. And if I get tired, what are those six packs you are carrying around for?" teased Zoya.
Asad looked at her shocked at what she suggested and blushed. He turned away and looked around. Zoya was right. There was no one and nothing around here. It was dark and creepy and no street lights. How long would they wait here. Did not look like anyone would come by for days. Atleast if they walked, they could pass some people along the way who would help them. He could not think of leaving Zoya behind because it too spooky and dangerous for her to be out here alone. They would have to walk.
He went to the car and took out the remaining food from the cooler and put it into Zoya's bag. He then slung the bag over his shoulder and held out his other hand for Zoya to hold on to. She leaned on him and started to walk. Asad locked the car and they both headed east towards Dils Farm.
