Part 3:

Next morning, at the breakfast table, everyone was seated in their respective seats discussing about their day's plans. Tanveer had decided to impress asad by taking care of his family today. She knew that asad was slipping away from her fingers and she had to do something about it. She made american style pancakes, scrambled eggs and macaroni salad with the help of a 'American style cooking' recipe book. She knew that najma and dilshaad loved this breakfast since zoya had introduced it to them. So to prove her proficiency in this department as well, she served them their favorite breakfast.

Najma : "Umm.. ammi where is zoya this morning?", Najma enquired politely since zoya was no where to be seen.

Dilshaad : "Zoya had a slight fever this morning, najma. She came to my room to get some medicines and I asked her to get some more sleep. She should be up by now and will be joining us any minute."

Asad was anxious. He knew he misbehaved last night and felt responsible for zoya's distress. He was lost in his thoughts feeling guilty when zoya walked in. She was dressed in a black jeans and white silk top looking lovely as ever. She looked pale and weak due to the fever but it had not managed to take away even a bit from her beauty. She sat next to dilshaad and hugged her sideways "Morning Phuphi" and confirmed dilshaad that she is feeling much better after taking the medicines. She greeted everyone else at the table too and started eating her breakfast.

Najma : "If zoya was sick, then who made the pancakes and scrambled eggs ammi?", she was confused because it didn't taste anything like zoya's cooking.

Dilshaad : "Beta, tanveer made the breakfast today. She offered to make our favorite breakfast since zoya was sick and still in bed."

Najma : "Oh, that's why. I should have guessed it", she made a sad face.

Dilshaad : "Guessed what?", she didn't get where najma was going with this.

Najma: "Nothing ammi, it's just that I like this breakfast only when Zoya makes it. No one can make american pancakes and eggs better than zoya, ammi. She is the best!", Najma didn't realize that she indirectly said that the breakfast sucked.

Dilshaad kept quite. She didn't know what to tell her daughter since Najma was right about the breakfast. It didn't taste anything like when zoya used to make it for them. Zoya smiled at Najma and told her that even Tanveer did a great job with the pancakes but no one at the table seemed to agree. Tanveer threw daggers at Najma for failing yet another plan of her's and making her look like a fool early in the morning. Asad, who was sipping his coffee and pretending to be immersed into the newspaper to avoid any eye contact with zoya, heard the conversation very well. Even he avoided the breakfast and sticked to his usual cereal diet.

Tanveer, never ready to give up, striked again, "Khala, Its time for your medicines. The doctor called yesterday and told me to give you 2 additional medicines for early recovery. Sorry I forgot to tell you about it yesterday".

"It's okay, Tanveer. Thank you", Dilshaad took the medicines from tanveer and placed in on the table next to her plate. She was taking them one by one since she was done with her breakfast.

Zoya glanced at the medicines while eating and stopped suddenly. She picked one of the medicine bottles from the table before dilshaad could pick it. "Phuphi, you can take this medicine from tomorrow. Please take your old medicines today and start the new schedule from tomorrow."

Asad looked at zoya questioningly, "Ms. Farooqui, ammi is not well and the doctor has prescribed these additional medicines so that ammi can recover as soon as possible. Whats wrong if she takes these medicines today?" He was confused.

How could tanveer miss this opportunity when her jammy was himself questioning zoya like that "Yeah, Zoya. Khaala needs to get well soon so she can participate in all the wedding preparations too." Asad again flinched at that term and glared at Tanveer.

Zoya : "Why would I have a problem with phuphi participating in your wedding preparations Tanveer", eyeing asad while saying so. "But if she takes these medicines today, she won't be able to get off her bed for the next one month."

Asad : He stood up in shock and angrily asked zoya, "What do you mean, Ms. Faaroqui?"

Tanveer : "Jammy, please calm down. Zoya, the doctor told me to give Khala these medicines as soon as possible. What's wrong with that? And you shouldn't say such bad things when its celebration time in our house."

Zoya : She had had it with these people, who had been questioning and judging her every move and her every decision. "Tanveer, the doctor must have told you to give these medicines to phuphi but did you ask the doctor for any precautions that were necessary? I guess not!", Tanveer had no idea where zoya was going with this. So she kept silent and listened to what zoya had to say. "This medicine, if consumed with syrups can cause a severe reaction in the body leading to irregular breathing and heartbeat, dizziness resulting in fainting and inability to move in extreme cases." Zoya explained in one breath. "And didn't you serve pancakes with syrup to phuphi this morning?"

Asad was super angry now and grabbed tanveer's arm and asked her, "Did you or did you not check with the doctor about the necessary precautions". Tanveer was very scared now and thought of a way to blame zoya for all this.

Tanveer : "Jammy, Jammy *with tears in her eyes* trust me, the doctor didn't say of any such thing. He didn't tell me to take any precautions. And I have known you and Khaala for so many years jammy, don't you trust me? And zoya, I very well know how to take care of my family. Khaala will soon be my ammi, who else can take better care of her than me? It was me who spoke to the doctor, not you. So i don't understand where all of your medical knowledge is coming from. I am a part of this family now and I very well know of my responsibilities. You don't have to interfere in our family matters since you are just a guest in this house."

Asad, dilshaad, najma and farhaan : All literally threw daggers at tanveer for insulting zoya like that. But before any of them could say something in zoya's defense, zoya stood up to make her final point.

Zoya : "I very well remember that I'm just a guest in this house Tanveer and I know that this is going to be your family and there is no one who can take care of this family better than you. In fact, a girl like you is the "perfect fit" for the DIL of this family. And as far as my medical knowledge is concerned, honestly I don't have any. But I do have something called common sense which tells me to read the description written behind any medicine bottle, the precautions necessary and the salts contained in the medicine. Even if the doctor didn't mention anything about the precautions, you should have been sensible enough to take a glance at the medicine description just in case. You could have avoided making the pancakes this morning if phuphi had to take the new medicines from today. But that would have only been possible if you had bothered to check the medicines you were planning to give 'my' phuphi", she was very hurt and somehow controlled her tears. "Phuphi, I'm sorry for creating a scene early in the morning but if you trust me, don't take the new medicines, today", saying so she left the dining area.

Asad took the bottle from the table and read the description carefully : "The medicine should not be taken with sauces, syrups, wine, or anything alcoholic. If ignored it can lead to irregular breathing and heartbeat, dizziness resulting in fainting and inability to move in extreme cases."

Asad : "Don't take those medicines Ammi, Ms. Faaroqui was right. And Tanu, i think before trying to copy someone, you should at least give it a thought. You clearly don't know the first thing about making pancakes and I just realized that you lack common sense also. Thanks to you, ammi could have fallen more sick than she already is. So instead of gloating about being a part of this family and your responsibilities, try and learn how to actually fulfill your responsibilities without causing further damage. And please go and apologize to Ms. Faaroqui for your unacceptable behavior. She is not just a guest anymore, she is'." , Asad couldn't complete the sentence anymore much to everyone's surprise. He decided to leave the table and went to his room without saying another word. Dilshaad and Najma very well understood what asad was about to say, Zoya is and has always been more than a guest. she is now a part of their family. Farhaan didn't quite understand what asad meant in the last sentence. He assumed that asad was way too mad at his fiance and since zoya has been living with them for so long now, she is not just a guest but a very good friend now. Tanveer was fuming, "Apologize? And me? To Zoya? Never! You shouldn't have insulted me like this Jammy.. Just a few more days and then I'm gonna make your life a living hell."
