Zoya
Zoya couldn't believe the gall of this man. She was being polite and he just insulted her. "I don't like you." Who says that? Zoya knew who. Men like him, with his good looks and killer body. She'd bet he had six-packs hiding under those clothes. She shook her head staring out at the ocean deep in thought when she was spun around by a large gripping hand.
"What is wrong with you?" He said looking all domineering and pissed off staring down at her. "No one talks to me like that!" He said through gritted teeth. "Well it looks like it's about time someone did." She said right back at him, trying to move out of his grip. He held her firm drawing her closer; he spoke straight into her face. She felt his breath on her skin.
"Listen here okay, I came here to get away from my troubles not to get a new one so do me a favour and stay away from me." He said, his eyes hard and glinting in the departing sunlight. His hands held her upper arms in a vise grip and she squirmed trying to get away. "Let go off me." She said through thin lips lined with immense anger. Oh she'd never felt violent in her life but he was pushing it. "I said take your hands off me!" She yelled right into his face. His grip eased some.
She belatedly noticed that people were staring at them. She heard a little old lady say, "Lovers spat." And shook her head. "The young people today . . . tsk tsk." Zoya huffed in annoyance and rolled her eyes. Lovers spat? Oh please! Him and her? Not a chance. She could never be with someone so overbearing and rude.
His hands removed themselves from her arms and she flexed them to get the blood flowing again. "Who do you think you are Mr. Self-Righteous? Putting your hands on me like some angry brute. I ought to have you kicked off this cruise on the next stop." She folded her arms and stared off at the sea with brows drawn in anger.
He didn't speak and so she chanced a glance at his face. He was staring at her making her heart jump. His face lined with fury, his feelings unknown to her because his eyes gave nothing away. She looked away and started away from him when her left foot, the injured one, gave away and she found herself falling. A strong pair of arms caught her firmly, her chest pressing into the hard wall of his. She looked up at him and froze. He was staring at her intently, his arms encapsulating her waist and their bodies fused together.
"I . . .um . . ." She started but found herself incapable of speech. Allah Miya! What was wrong with her? Get a grip Zoya and use your words! She shouted internally at herself. "Um . . . thanks. I'm fine." She finally got out but he didn't seem to be listening. Zoya managed to maneuver one of her arms between them and snapped her fingers in front of his face. His eyes blinked and as he assessed the situation, he let her go like she was contaminated. Zoya stumbled at his abrupt release but managed to right herself. She looked at him bewildered and saw his eyes lowered and him slowly stepping away.
Her throat clogged and she couldn't understand why his reactions hurt her. Was she so bad? That he saw her as a problem? As trouble? She swallowed hard and looked away staring off at nothing in particular.
Suddenly the boat rocked, making her stumble and slam into the railing. "Oww . . . Allah Miya! What was that?" It rocked again, this time harder. Asad came to her side as she latched onto the railing for dear life her waist throbbing from the lashing against the ship. "Are you okay?" She looked at his concerned face. "Uh . . . yea, I think so. I . . . what was that?" He shrugged. "I don't know. I'll go find out."
Just as he was about to step away, the ship rocked again, this time so hard that Zoya went flying over the railing. Her fingers tried to find purchase on the railing but her fingers were slipping. "Zoya!" Asad yelled. He latched onto her hand trying to pull her back. The rain had started in the midst of all this craziness. Was there a storm brewing? Oh God, just her luck that she'd be caught on the open sea when a storm was coming. The boat rocked again this time, she heard an alarm bell and a voice over the PA system, "Please don't panic. We advise everyone to go to their cabins and stay there. The waters are turbulent, the waves hard and we've heard from the meteorological office that a storm is brewing. Calm down. We are doing our best."
The ship continued to rock as Asad tried his best, her fingers slipping through his. Her eyes watered, she was going to die. Allah Miya she was going to drown in this ocean. Why didn't she choose to vacation on dry land? The ship rocked its hardest then throwing Asad off balance and sending him overboard and taking Zoya with him.
Zoya felt the cold waters pulling her under as she fought to get back to the surface. A strong hand gripped her pulling her into him. "Oh God. Are you okay? Talk to me." Asad said his voice frantic. Zoya could hear him but his voice felt miles away. She felt something pushing at her chest and she coughed. Water spewed from her throat and she sucked in much needed air into her aching lungs.
Asad
"Help! Someone help us!" Asad shouted. Oh my God! Of all the things to happen on this trip, he got thrown overboard with the one person he wanted to avoid and she was in a precarious position. He couldn't get it right but he had to try CPR on her in the water. If he hadn't she probably would've died, coughing up all that water. He breathed a sigh of relief that she was breathing.
"Help, Someone help us!" The ship continued moving forward, Asad could see it rocking intermittently but it seemed everything was fine. Maybe they had been too close to the railing. Damn trouble-maker. He looked at her eyes closed; her face looked ashen and almost blue. The water was cold. What the heck were they going to do? Chances are they'd freeze until they eventually drowned. If he survived this, he was never taking a vacation again!
He swam out noticing some land close by, it would be difficult to swim all that way and supporting her at the same time but he couldn't contemplate abandoning her. He swam slowly, pulling the girl along with him. His arms and legs burned with the pressure of swimming so long but finally he encroached on dry land. It was dark and deserted but at least they were out of the water.
The girl seemed to have passed out but she was still breathing. Asad laid her against the sand and flopped on his back beside her. Ya Allah! How did he end up here? Listening to his mother and sister and taking this stupid cruise only to fall overboard and get stranded with ' he looked over at the unconscious girl- the last person he wanted to be alone with.
Asad studied her again and watched her eyes flutter but remain closed. Her black hair was strewn across the sand and her long fringe covered one of her eyes, her head flopped to one side. He sighed. Once she was awake, they'd venture off and find a way out of here and back home. Definitely no more vacation for him. He was going back to Bhopal and back to work. He'd rather have been exhausted from the office than what he just went through.
Zoya
Zoya woke to hot sun bearing down on her. So much for that storm. Allah Miya! Her throat felt as if there was sand in it. It hurt to swallow. Huh? She felt like she'd slept in sand. Zoya opened her eyes peeking through the blinding sunlight. "Where am I?" She stood up on shaky legs trying to accustom her eyes to the glaring sunlight.
"We're on an island." A gruff voice said making her jump. She looked to her left seeing him. Oh God. Could this get any worse? "What?" she asked staring at him dumbfounded. "On an island? The ship docked?"
His eyes lowered to the sand. He looked like hell. His shirt was askew and his hair looked like he'd been running his fingers through it all night or trying to pull it out, she didn't know. "No. You don't remember?"
"Remember?" Zoya racked her brain to figure out what he was talking about. Ah! She remembered sitting with him at the restaurant then leaving and then the boat rocking. Yes, the boat rocked! "Did we fall overboard?" She asked in an almost shriek.
He flinched but nodded. "I swam us here. There was nothing I could do. You were unconscious the whole time."
"Thank you." She said softly. He looked at her surprise tingeing his expression. He nodded slowly and looked away clearing her throat.
Zoya sank into the sand, "Allah Miya! Stuck on an island. With him! Oh God, please help me."
He strode up to her and sank in front of her, "Excuse me?" He said looking at her with disbelief and anger. "I saved your life and instead of thanking me you're lamenting your fate to being here with me?" He pointed a finger at her, "Get one thing straight, I'm not thrilled to be here with you either. I'd much rather be anywhere else."
Zoya stood up abruptly staring down, irritated at his rudeness. It seemed the man didn't know how to speak to a woman. Where had he grown up? Was he resident to the ancient cave dwellers? Me Asad. You stupid woman! Beating on his chest, club in hand. She shook her head. His arrogance left her fuming.
Just then her stomach growled embarrassingly loudly. "I'm hungry." She said looking at him. He shrugged his shoulders, "Not my problem." Her lips formed a small 'O' of surprise at his inconsideration.
You could climb up a tree and find us something edible. Stupid man! "Did you say something?" He asked getting into her personal space. "No. Nothing at all."
He moved away. Zoya started away but mashed something prickly in the sand. "Aaah!" She shouted and fell backwards. She landed on her butt. "Owww." Her face scrunched up in pain. He stood over her, a hand extended. She gritted her teeth and tentatively put her hand in his. Then she smirked mischievously and pulled him down. He fell with a muted thud into the sand and Zoya stood up laughing at him. Holding her stomach as she laughed at him. She didn't even notice that he was glaring at her.
She felt a warm hand encapsulate hers and she was falling again. This time though she didn't fall onto the hot sand but onto a hard male chest. She heard him suck in a deep breath as her weight hit him square in his chest. She also felt like the wind had been knocked out of her. Her face twisted in discomfort. She opened her eyes slowly, her heart kick-starting as she found him staring at her again.
His hands came up to cup her head and she breathed in shakily. He brushed her fallen hair behind her ear. His face came closer and closer still, she could feel puffs of air coming from his lips, caressing her cheek. Zoya's breathing was beyond calm now. His lips traveled to her ear and he whispered something. What the . . .!!!
