Walking through the corridors towards the guest room she felt a sense of unease takeover her. Her hands were trembling; her body shivering in the intense heat still prevalent at this hour. I'll just give the tray to someone at the door, she thought to herself. Standing at the door she lightly knocked and handed over the tray. Turning to walk back her curiosity got the better of her, causing her to twist her neck around and peek towards the mattress laid out in the far corner. Catching a glimpse of the light grey suit her heart skipped a beat. Craning her head further to see past the nurse, she tried to see his face. "It can't be," she whispered.
"What was that Zoya?" asked the caretaker who had taken the tray from her, "Do you want to come in?"
"Oh..nothing...no no no," she mumbled, turning to leave.
"He's stirring!" The nurse spoke out, causing Zoya to turn back around, "Bring the juice quickly!"
The caretaker rushed in to his side and handed the juice to the nurse, "He's mumbling something," he said leaning closer towards the unconscious man's face, "can't quite make out what he's saying though."
"Mat jao...nahin...no no.." he continued to stammer quietly, "Come back..please...please."
"He's calling out to someone," said the caretaker, standing up straight again.
By this stage Zoya had stepped into the room, unable to walk away from someone in trouble. The caretaker and nurse continued to block the sight of his face. She'd heard the caretaker say the man was speaking but she hadn't heard anything. Taking another step closer, as if her feet were unconsciously moving on their own, she heard it.
Turning cold she stopped in her tracks as the nurse and caretaker turned to look in her direction. She was sure she'd heard correctly looking at the nurse and caretaker's gazes rested on her.
"Did he just say your name?!" the nurse asked, bewildered.
"I think he did," the caretaker replied, seeing Zoya's stunned face.
"Zoyyaaa..." he whispered again, shaking his head in his sleep, "Don't go.."
"Asad?" the name escaped her mouth.
"Come here," the nurse called out to her, "You obviously know him."
Walking towards the nurse's side she saw his face creased up and shaking, as if ridding his mind of a horrible nightmare. She gasped out aloud and clasped a hand over her mouth.
"Who is he?" asked the caretaker.
Within that split second her mind raced ahead of her. Did she want them to know? She'd run away from everything that would remind her of him, thinking she'd never see him again. And now her kismet had brought him in front of her in a helpless state. She didn't want to lie to the people who had given her shelter but she wasn't ready to confront her past. A month hadn't been enough; she didn't think a life-time would be enough.
"If you don't want to say then that's fine too," the caretaker said gently.
Her mind slowed its pace but her heart continued to beat rapidly. "I should leave," she said, turning around, just as he chanted out her name again. Her heart skipped another beat causing her to halt in her tracks. Swinging around her head she looked at his face again, a stream of tears made tracks along her face before falling to the ground. She stood still waiting for something to shake her out of her stupor.
The nurse walked towards Asad and bend down by the bed-side. Shaking his arm she tried to awake him. He stirred a little more, scrunched up his eyes before opening them slightly and squinting through them to orientate himself. Seeing two unknown blurry faces and a figure standing turned away he started to pull himself into a sitting position. The two people stand held his arms and helped him sit up.
"Take this juice and drink it first," the lady said, handing him a glass full of what looked like orange juice.
Looking up at her he took the glass from her hands and put it to his lips. His stomach had stopped growling but felt as if it had started to feed upon itself to sustain him. Before he took a sip he thought, what if it's poison? I don't know these people...it'll be my lucky day if it is, and with that thought he gulped down the entire glass in one breath. As his eyes focused in the dim lighting, he looked towards the lady standing facing the other way. He felt a pang in his heart as he saw the jeans she was wearing. It can't be her, he thought, Allah couldn't be that gracious towards him after what he had done to her. However he continued to stare at her, wishing within his heart that it was.
The caretaker looked between the two, not sure whether he should call out to Zoya. Bringing them together was not his decision to make. Looking at the nurse he told her to give the young man the food and walked towards Zoya. Walking up to her he placed a hand on her shoulder. Turning to face him she let out a whisper, "Ji?"
He felt as though her voice echoed in the small room, reaching him from all four corners.
