Part 7 - The Dress Hunt
"Does this look like peacock colour to you?" Zoya all but yelled and Asad looked around to see all the people in the store stare at them. He lifted his hand to pull her down and calm her but he stopped midway unsure of touching her. He was just here working as her chauffeur and even paying the bills. Wait isn't that what even boyfriends do? Asad rubbed his forehead and groaned for even thinking that.
"Yes madam." The guy behind the counter said. Zoya and even Asad looked at him incredulously.
"This colour us green for crying out loud."
"Yes ma'am and isn't peacock colour actually green?" the guy said with a creepy smile. Zoya gave him an angry look and stomped out of the store. Asad gave the man an apologetic smile and ran behind her. Zoya was standing near the car with her face buried in her hand. With the way her shoulders moved Asad knew she was crying. He stood beside her not sure how to calm her down. When Zoya's sobs grew louder and the people around gave Asad dirty looks thinking he was the reason behind the lady's tears he forgot all the hesitancy and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Um, miss..." and that's when he realized he didn't even know the girl's name.
"Miss, please don't cry people are staring at me." He whispered. Zoya who thought that he was trying to console her was baffled to hear him worry about what the people thought of him.
"Are you for real Mr Suit-n-tie. Is that all you care about? Your freaking reputation?" Zoya threw him a cold look and went back to crying.
"Uh-oh Asad bad dialogue." Asad thought to himself.
"We went to each and every shop on the list that Najma sent but I couldn't find the same dress anywhere. I don't know will I face Rehaan's mother, she thinks of me like her own daughter but how will she react when she finds out I ruined the dress that she had selected?"
Asad was confused, one moment she says she considers her like her own daughter and the next moment she says she'll be upset the dress was ruined? But Asad didn't say anything. He decided to keep his mouth shut and think of something to get out of this soup. He checked and re-checked the list, surely they hadn't missed a single shop. It suddenly dawned on him that there still was a shop that they hadn't visited. The shop wasn't on the list but they could always try.
"Um, miss..."
"Miss Farooqui." She told him.
"Yeah Ms. Farooqui there is this shop of ethnic wear that I know and although it's not on the list but there no harm in checking it out." Zoya immediately stopped crying and looked at him.
"Really? Which shop? Where is it?"
"Well they usually sell salwar suits but lately they have started a new collection for brides and since it's new they have all the latest designs and fashions so we can give it a try. It's at the same place where we first met, just opposite Queen's Mary hospital."
The mention of the place brought back the memories of their first meet and their first fight. She never even in her wildest dreams thought she would meet that man once again and never ever thought that she would go hunting a dress for Amrin's mehendi with him.
Asad too was thinking about the same. After the type of service he had got in the shop he had made up his mind to never step foot in that store desperate times calls for desperate measures. He couldn't understand why he wanted to help this stranger who had been nothing but rude to him ever since they met. He had a big fat ego who never let him give anyone a second chance so why did he make this stranger an exception?
"Hello Mister..."
"Mr Khan." He replied in a clipped tone.
"Yeah Mr Khan where are you lost? We don't have much time let's go this shop that you are talking about." She caught his arms but left immediately and looked at him. There was an awkward pause before Zoya being herself asked him to hurry up.
oOo
As soon as Asad and Zoya walked inside the store, the store owner recognized Asad and came forward to greet him.
"Mr Khan so glad to see you back. How can I help you?"
"Actually we are here to look for this lehenga we had in mind. We want the exact same one." Asad said in a bored monotonous tone repeating the line they had been saying in every store they had been to today.
"Well that's a little difficult but let's see what the lehenga looks. You surely have a photo of it right?" he looked at Zoya. Zoya sighed and shook her head.
"Um, how will I know what type of lehenga is that."
"Just show me all the peacock-coloured lehengas that you have. Um, you do know what peacock colour is right?"
The store owner narrowed his eyes and nodded giving her a do-you-think-I'm-stupid-enough-to-not-know-that-look.
"Great so show me each and every lehenga that you have in that colour." Zoya clapped her hands in glee while Asad massaged his head for the umpteenth time that day. He was never fond of weddings and now looking at the girl beside him he found another reason to hate weddings all the more.
"Don't worry bhabhiji I will personally show you the lehengas."
Asad and Zoya looked at each other with eyes wide open at the word "bhabhiji"
"Excuse me- " Zoya began but was cut off,
"In fact some new designs had been delivered today itself in the colour you want..."
"Listen..."
"Arrey Rakesh aaj jo naya maal aaya tha woh nikaal ke rakh madam ko dikhana hai." He hollered at the servant and went ahead and motioned them to sit on the mattress while he searched for the lehenga in the rack. Asad asked Zoya to drop it and having no other option she did.
After hours of scanning through all the lehengas when they still couldn't find "THE" One Zoya had begun to sulk, her mood became crankier with every piece of clothing she rejected and the store owner's patience was wearing thin.
"Mr Shah you don't have the lehenga that I want." Zoya said n rejected yet another dress.
"Ma'am if you could just tell me how the dress looked like..."
"But I have already told you hundred times." She said annoyed.
"But that description is not enough." He said a bit rudely.
"Excuse me Mr Shah I know the situation is a little irritating but you need to be polite with ma'am here." Asad gave him a cold hard look which made him cringe and nod meekly. He was miffed at the way he spoke to Zoya. That is no way to talk to a customer no matter how trying they are.
"Exactly the reason I never wanted to come here." he muttered under his breath.
After thinking for a while the store owner said,
"Ma'am there is this new piece but I have not yet put it on display. I wasn't intending to releasing it until later but since you desperately need it I'll show it you, just wait a minute." Mr Shah stood and went inside a room.
"I hope this is the one Mr Khan."
"It will be." He reassured her.
Mr Shah soon came out with a package in his hand and a wide grin on his face. He slowly opened the package and removed the lehenga out of it, unfolding it and removing the paper from between it. Zoya gasped looking at it. It was the same lehenga she had been looking. She snatched it from him and ran her hand through the soft fabric, caressing the diamonds on it. Ok this wasn't exactly the same but it was a pretty similar and she could easily pass it off as the original. She was sure neither Amrin nor Sara aunty would remember how exactly the lehenga looked like.
This was a beautiful electrifying blue, deep pink and teal green colour combination lehenga choli, not exactly the peacock colour that the original one was but it had all the colours of it. It was beautifully trimmed with lace, ruffles and pleats with embroidered designs on the sleeves and the choli along with contrast patchwork borders on the hemline embellished with beads, silk, sequins and zari work. Unlike the previous one which had some diamond work on the chest. It had a coordinating blouse and deep pink dupatta making it a beautiful ensemble.
"So I take it that this is what you were looking for?" Mr shah asked with a gleam in his eyes.
"Well it's not exactly the same but it is very close to the original. We'll take it."
"Perfect. Nishi here will take you to the changing room to try the outfit and take down measurements for any alterations."
Asad sighed in relief and decided to message Najma that they were able to find the dress while Zoya changed.
As soon as he typed in the reply he looked up to see Zoya walk out of the room with the attendant beside her working on the pleats of the lehenga. Zoya fidgeted with the dupatta and looked at Asad for approval. Asad was mesmerized, smitten by the beautiful sight in front of him. The people around him didn't matter for his eyes for the girl in front of him only. He couldn't register the ping of his mobile, he couldn't register Mr Shah talking some nonsense gibberish about the lehenga.
"Mr Khan is it not looking good?" Zoya pouted.
"It's nice." Was all Mr Emotionally Challenged Khan could manage to utter. He certainly couldn't say that Zoya looked exquisite in it even when her hair was messy, her face bared of any makeup and the tiredness of the day finally catching up on her. No he certainly couldn't.
"Nice? Nice is all you've got to say? Unbelievable." She lifted her lehenga and stormed inside the changing room with the attendant in tow. Mr Shah looked apologetically at Asad.
Once inside Zoya calmed down a bit, she couldn't understand why she reacted the way she did. What else was she expecting from someone who was a stranger? Ok Zoya not a stranger anymore! Her heart said.
Are you kidding me you don't even know his first name. So yeah he is a stranger. Her mind contradicted.
But nice is a little mediocre don't you think? He could've said you look good. Yeah that would've been nice'. Her heart intervened.
"STOP!" She said aloud.
"Um ma'am I'm just checking if it needs alterations." Nishi looked at her.
"I'm sorry that was not for you." She said sheepishly.
Once she changed back into her jeans and top she came out of the room.
"Mr Shah the dress is a perfect fit, it doesn't need any alteration. Thank you so much for putting up with me." Zoya laughed and so did Mr Shah however Asad stood there gazing at them impassively. Once the Mr Shah handed the dress to her Asad ushered her out.
"I'm never coming here ever again." He muttered to Zoya who smiled at his annoyance.
oOo
The car ride was silent with no one talking. The events of the day had drained out Zoya and she couldn't help falling asleep in the car with her head on the window. Asad looked at her sleeping peacefully but her head kept bumping against the window as the car moved. Without thinking for another minute he reached out for her and pulled her closer letting her head rest on his shoulder. Zoya found the position better than the earlier and sighed in content snuggling in closer. For some reason unknown Asad found himself smiling too, the girl he couldn't stand for a minute was the one he had ended up spending an entire day and now here he was dropping her off at the hotel she was currently staying at.
The car jerked to a stop as they reached the hotel and he gently shook her shoulder to wake her up.
"Huh..." Zoya replied, her mind disoriented.
"We've reached." He replied. Zoya looked around and nodded before taking her bag and the packet containing the lehenga. Asad had come out and opened the door for Zoya.
"Thank you so much Mr Khan." She smiled and walked towards the entrance just then her phone rang and so did Asad's.
"Hey Amrin."
"Haan Ammi I'll be home in a while."
"Yes Amrin I'm standing down, yes my bags are packed and I'll be leaving for phupi's place in the morning itself."
"Ammi I can't go tomorrow I have a meeting."
"Maybe he'll come."
"No ammi I'm sorry I'm very busy tomorrow, send waseem to pick her up, now can we talk about this when I reach home?"
"Amrin I'll talk to you later I'm really tired and I just want to sleep."
"Allah Hafiz"
"Allah Hafiz"
Both turned to look at each other and smiled before walking their separate ways.
