I pulled at my hair in frustration and looked at my blank document on my laptop. For the past 7 hours I had been sitting here in my room with the laptop on my study table and have been staring at it blankly. The article was due tomorrow and I had no idea what to write, I had been given a new column this time for my magazine. I had to write that did love really happened at first sight?
I was a man for god's sake! How can I write something so mushy? I hated love stories and now I had to write about love at first sight?! But I had to as the writer originally writing for this column was on a maternity leave and I had to cover up for her. I massaged my temple and got up to fill what seemed my 11th cup of coffee; I went to the kitchen and was filling my cup when I felt a sudden chill behind me. I turned round and saw a girl standing behind me with a slight shimmer as the outline of her body. She was pretty would be an understatement, she was breathtakingly beautiful.
"What are you doing in my house? And first of all how the hell did you get in?" I asked her, and already big almond eyes became even bigger.
"You...you can see me?" She asked me dumbstruck.
"Of course yes! Why not? And how did you get in here huh?" I asked her, I was going to speak it with authority, but seeing her all my authority vanished into thin air.
"People usually can't see me; you see'I'm a ghost." She spoke softly; I did a double take on hearing ghost. Ghosts don't exist right? I mean gorgeous ghosts like her surely don't!
"I'm not a fool! Ghosts don't exist! Science never proved it! Now you better tell me how the hell you got into my house, before I call the police!" I said this time loudly. She looked at me with pleading eyes, and my heart melted right then and there.
"Try and understand, Asad! I'm a ghost! I died last week'in a car accident' I was with my fiance and a truck collided with our car I died on the spot. My fiance blames himself for this; I've seen him cry himself to sleep at night! You don't believe it do you? Then search it on the internet, you'll find your answers." She said softly and sighed loudly.
I searched a week back's news and found many car accidents, but one headline caught my eye "A couple dies in a car crash near New Market". I clicked on the link and there in front of my eyes was the picture of the girl standing behind me and it also said that she was dead. Then that meant'she was actually a ghost.
Well there is also another conclusion! I may just have fallen asleep and be dreaming about this, right? All I have to do is slap myself hard and all this will be gone! So I slapped myself hard and looked back, there she was still standing at the same spot with this-man-is-lunatic expression.
I shook my head, how can this be possible? Ghosts do not exist! That was what I thought until now, I sat down heavily on my chair and looked up at her she had tilted her head to one side and was watching me intently. And then it struck me she had called me by my name even though I did not even tell her! Further proof she was a ghost.
"So'" she said and I looked at her again.
"So what?" I asked her.
"You are writing an article on 'Does love really happen at first sight?' Huh?" She said and gave me a cheeky smile; I rolled my eyes at her and closed my laptop.
"I saw you haven't written much in it, I can help you'you know?" She said and smiled at me again.
"Thanks but no thanks I'm pretty much capable of doing things on my own. And by the way how come you're here? I mean particularly at my house? Ghosts have to be summoned or something like that na? I never called for your help." I said.
"That is what I'm thinking'how come I ended up at your house? I thought I would go somewhere, where there was a person who understood what love actually is, unlike you! Who could not write a single word on love and had been sitting here staring at the laptop screen for the past 7 hours!" She exclaimed and looked exasperated.
"Excu'Wait what? You were spying on me? You were here for the past 7 HOURS?!" I said, now angry.
"Of course I was! Or else how would have I known?" She said nonchalantly a huge contrast from her earlier mood.
This girl! She is crazy! And is getting on my nerves! And look at her audacity she just sat on of my favorite armchairs without even asking me! Urgh!
"I still can't understand why did I land up here? When the Leader had said that I would go to someone who really needed me and consciously or sub-consciously was calling upon my help. I wonder." She said pretty much to herself.
And then it struck me, I had called her sub-consciously when I was trying to write my article because I needed help. And somehow she seemed perfect to be my aid.
