Chapter 8

The car came to a halt in front of a two storey building in a quiet exclusive neighborhood. The flight from Bhopal to Delhi was uneventful and Zoya was impressed with Delhi. It was clean and the roads were wide and not as crowded as she had expected. Asad had arranged for a car and a chauffeur to pick them up from the airport and take them to the apartment.

A middle aged woman with an infectious smile was standing on the doorway to greet them. Dilshad greeted her with warmth and introduced Zoya and Humaira to her.

Jamila leaped with excitement and asked "Are these both your to-be-daughters in law?"

Dilshad laughed and said, "Jamila bi, Humaira is getting married to Ayaan and Zoya is Humaira's sister. She is come to India for her sister's wedding."

Jamila turned to Asad and said, "Asad Baba why don't you get married too with Ayaan baba then when you come to Delhi with your wife I won' have to cook for you. Your wife can do that."

Asad was hauling the luggage inside the house. He froze for a second before he cheered up and replied, "Even if I do get married you are still going to cook and clean for me. You can't get rid of me that easily Jamila bi."

"Don't want to give your wife any trouble. Huh?" Jamila bi laughed.

"At least he is talking of getting married and having a wife." Dilshad shook her head.

The 'apartment' turned out to be a two storey house with a huge sitting room, a kitchen and a master bedroom on the first floor and two bedroom and a terrace on the second floor. It was spotless and decorated in a contemporary style and devoid of any clutter. Zoya suspected the place was done up more to Asad's taste than Ammi's.

Zoya and Humaia were going to share an upstairs room and Ayaan and Asad were going to be in the room adjacent to them while Dilshad of course occupied the master bedroom downstairs. After everybody had freshened up and gorged on the delicious meal served by Jamila bi, Dilshad announced that they would leave for clothes shopping immediately.

"We don't have a lot of time. We are in Delhi only for 3 days." She said

"It looks lovely on you" Dilshad exclaimed as Humaira tried on yet one more lehenga. "What do you think, Zoya? The mauve one or the cream one?"

"Ammi they both look good." Zoya replied

They were in a boutique that seemed to specialize in bridal wear. The prices according to Zoya were exorbitant but all the clothes looked dazzling. Humaira would make a beautiful bride she was sure.

Ayaan on the other hand was trying his best not to look bored while Asad was on the phone. Since he had advanced the meeting to tomorrow, he had to make a lot of preparation and get the paperwork faxed from his Bhopal office to his Delhi office. He wanted to get his meeting done with so he could be free to show Zoya around the old monuments of Delhi.

"Asad!!!!" they all heard the loud, excited voice and turned around.

A stunning girl with tight jeans and a sleeveless lacy shirt was waving towards them. She slipped her sunglasses into her oversized bag and walked past everyone into Asad's arms and hugged him.

"Sweetie, what are you doing here? You are in Delhi, you come to this boutique and you don't even tell me?" She pouted, with her arms still around Asad.

Asad looked at the faces of the crowd in front of him. Ayaan was amused with a huge grin on his face, Ammi was frowning, Humaira was trying her best not to show any reaction and Zoya was looking at him intently.

He tried to free himself from the girl's arms and gave a small smile before offering explanations.

"This is Natasha, a friend and Natasha, this is my Ammi, my brother, his fianc and her sister." He said it all in one breath.

"You are Asad's brother." She gave Ayaan a brilliant smile, "Quite handsome, much like Asad, I have to say." She laughed

"So" she turned towards Asad ignoring the women "You are in Delhi and in my boutique."

"This is YOUR boutique?" Ayaan asked

"I model their clothes." She said dismissively

"Asad darling call me and we'll have dinner tonight." She focused her attention on Asad again

"I am here with my family I don't have any spare time. Dinner is out." Asad said, a little uncomfortable.

"That's okay. I am busy tonight anyway." She said taking Asad's hand in hers and giving him a kiss on his cheeks.

"We'll do it the next time you are in town." She said as she breezed out of the shop.

After a moment of awkward silence, Ayaan finally spoke up, "She seemed nice."

Dilshad gave Ayaan a killer look before turning to Asad. If looks could kill, Asad would be dead by now under his Ammi's withering glare. Dilshad turned her attention towards the clothes and decided to ignore the preceding drama. Humaira tried to hide her smile and concentrated on the issue of her lehenga.

Asad stole a glance towards Zoya who also gave him a sideward glance before assisting Humaira with her choices. Asad, irritated with himself went back to making his phone calls.

The chattering in the car as they rode back from the shop to their apartment did not show an inkling that Asad was in trouble. Ammi was in quite a good mood and the ride back was pleasant until Ayaan sitting next to him in the passenger seat nudged him and said quietly

"A model? Nice going bahijaan."

"Shut up Ayaan" hissed Asad looking at the rear view mirror and catching Zoya's unreadable expression.

Zoya woke up with a start. She was disoriented for a few seconds before realizing that Humaira was sleeping right next to her. She waited for her breathing to become steady before she reached for the water. She noted that the glass was empty and decided to go to the kitchen to get a drink.

She poured water for herself from the fridge and was proceeding towards the stairs when she saw Asad get up from the couch.

"Zoya. Do you need something?" Asad asked

"No, actually yes, I wanted a drink of water." She said almost turning around to leave.

"I was doing my office work. I have a meeting tomorrow morning." Asad offered

"Great" Zoya said "Good luck"

"Did you like the clothes that you saw? I know you are not into shopping but still." He said

"Yes" Zoya acknowledged

Asad was losing his patience with the monosyllable answers he was always getting from Zoya. He took two long strides and was soon standing dangerously close to her. He looked at her with lust and fury simmering inside him. He took the glass of water from her hand and noisily placed it on the dining table. He backed her into the wall and slapped his palm on either side of the wall caging her.She looked at him in shock, fear mingled with excitement ran through her body. He stepped closer to her until their bodies were pressed together. His eyes stayed on hers as he ran his hands up and down her arms. "Were you jealous of Natasha today? I saw you watching us the whole time."

She didn't think, she didn't answer. He hands automatically rested on his chest to keep him away but she grew very aware of the warmth of his body beneath his T shirt and the contours of his chest and shoulders. "I don't care" she said, trying for dignity and failing miserably.

For an instant the gleam in his eyes changed and now his hands were on her hips, kneading. "If I was in your place, I would be insanely jealous." He said with a devilish smile.

He was holding her, hard, possessively hard and then his mouth were on hers. His mouth was frantic as he tasted her. The scrape of his teeth made her cry out in pain and pleasure and the plunge of his tongue made her head spin.

He lost his head. He wanted more. He turned her towards the dining table and pressed her hips in to the edge and lifted her up onto it so that his hands were free to touch her. He heard her unsteady breathing when his hands made his way inside her top and found her nipples hard with desire against his thumbs. Her heart pounding against his palm. She was trembling under his touch. He wanted more, so much more.

Awareness suddenly came to him and he dropped his hands and slowly stepped back. He saw her raspy breathing, the glazed look in her eyes and the grip on the table that was turning her knuckles white.

"I'm sorry. Are you all right?"

He was furious with himself for losing his head and he used his temper to overcome his confusion. "So the ice princess melts. You are not as cold as you like to pretend. Things do affect you. You just came alive under my touch."

Zoya slowly came out of her trance and shocked at his words and his sudden change in attitude got off the table hoping her legs could carry her.

Asad was not done with his fury. He was mad with himself that he had let things get this far. He held on to her elbow and turned her towards himself, keeping a safe distance. He mocked. "I asked Ayaan, tactfully of course, if you had a boyfriend and he said you don't. Is that cold uncaring act to keep everybody at arm's length and is that why your younger sister is getting married while you look on."

The hurt in her eyes troubled him somewhere deep in the heart but he ignored it. He knew that he was way out of line and he was hurting her unnecessarily but he was angry with himself for caring about her and her soulful eyes which at the very moment was brimming with tears.

She held her head up high and jerked her arm away from him before walking towards the stairs.

She abruptly turned around and said, "But this is not your act right? This is how you really are and that is why your younger brother is getting married while you look on. And as for keeping everyone at arm's length, I was married and my husband died two years ago."

Asad saw her retreating back with a shocked expression on his face.
