If you all notice, there has always been a third element in AsYa's love story. It's almost like these two somewhat dysfunctional people need the help of an extraneous element to bind them. What they are afraid to say to each other, their inanimate friends help communicate. This 'teesra' element has always helped rather than hurt their love story.
The broken phone was initially a metaphor for their broken lines of communication but soon became a focal point for their daily banter and initiated somewhat of a conversation between the two. The phone went through many repairs, bandaids were applied to keep it intact, played ping pong between the two but laid the foundation of a developing bond between the two. Even if they didn't want to talk to each other, the broken phone forced them to 'talk.'
Then came the handcuffs in Mangalpur. The handcuffs established a new bond between them. A bond, even if they felt was forced, forced them to stay together and learn a little bit more about each other. For the first time, the handcuffs helped them feel those initial signs of attraction as a man and woman. Eventually, the handcuffs became invisible but they still sensed that bond even after walking back through the door to Asad's home.
Similarly, the haldi paste acted as a catalyst after Mangalpur. While, Zoya wanted to tend to his wounds and thank him with the paste for saving her life, he became all defensive and erected the tall, impermeable walls around his heart with some really bitter words. Nevertheless, they did communicate. He knew she cared, and she knew his words would always be harsher than his actions.
Zoya's favorite iPad has been her companion from day 1. After she lost the iPad at Mangalpur, Asad replaced it, but if you all recall, the new iPad became a contentious issue between the two. They had both incurred a life and death situation; spent some intimate moments with each other, but neither was ready to talk about the 'real' issue. Through the iPad, Zoya vented her frustration (after the haldi showdown) while he showed signs that he did care about her. So, even if they communicated in their odd, dysfunctional way, it did help them notch up their understanding for each other by a few degrees. Later, the iPad helped Asad find Zoya at the site of the bus accident. The iPad has always been Zoya's identity but this new one happens to be the one he gave her. She lost her original iPad in Mangalpur. Symbolically speaking, Mangalpur changed their equation forever. Asad became a part of her identity after the Mangalpur incident just like her new iPad.
Pakoras: The bhang pakoras have probably helped move their 'train of communication' at supersonic speed compared to the earlier objects. Under the influence of bhang, they expressed their innermost desires that they had suppressed for quite some time. We can only speculate, how much of their conversation they still remember. My gut feel is that they remember everything, it's just all buried in their subconscious. They will continue to suppress it till the day they are ready to confess, but in their subconscious minds they have already confessed to each other; their best communication tool to date.
Jam toast/Kachori: These innocuous food items helped Zoya communicate her feels of possessiveness and jealousy for Asad. Asad got a kick out of seeing the very green expressions on Ms New York. He came out of his shell and actually expressed some feelings for Zoya. His smiles on seeing the smiley toasts and desirous gaze when she ate the kachoris are still etched in our memories.
Holi ka rang: Asad was most demonstrative about his feelings during the Holi season. Even though he didn't say much, his feelings were on full display when he dunked her with water and applied color on her face (thrice, not once) lovingly. Even Zoya appreciated his silent affection for her. She returned his smiles and finally applied color on his face with the same affection.
So far, all these third elements have been inanimate, and have undoubtedly brought them closer. However indecisive they might me, these objects have helped them communicate with each other. In the current scenario, it's the visa/ticket that is acting as the third element. It was quite apparent yesterday, that both wanted Zoya to stay back as long as the other person would say it explicitly. When both failed in speaking their heart's desire, it's the visa that came to their rescue. Once again, the third element helped them communicate. Asad was able to convey that he would prefer she stay and she was able to gauge his feelings through the employment letter. But there is a catch here. This time, there is also another third element- Tanveer- a living, animate object that's involved in their story.
Having Tanveer in this equation could complicate things. We have already seen how she has manipulated both of them since she has been in town. Now, she is playing with their emotions and taking advantage of their inability to communicate directly with each other.
If only Asad and Zoya would stop depending on these extraneous elements and start talking/communicating directly, no Tanveer or Razia could interfere in their lives. They would not need handcuffs or pakoras to help them realize their feelings.
Asad and Zoya need each other; nothing or no one else. No 'teesra' element should be allowed in their story….that would make life so uncomplicated but alas complicated is another name for AsYa….and that's why we love them.
