Part 3
Asad could not believe his ears. He could not believe that fate had played a cruel trick on him once again. Another person he loved has gone away from him though the fault was his this time. But he will not let the vicious hag called fate win again. He would not let the person he loved go away without at least letting her know his feelings.
'Ammi when did she leave?' he asked in a strangled yet determined voice.
'Kya?...Uh…I think about fifteen minutes before.'
No sooner had these words left her mouth that Asad took off running. He jumped into the car and drove off at top speed, for once not bothered about his disheveled appearance. He promised himself that he will bring her back. Bring her back to the house which finally had the privilege to be called a home just because of her.
Asad drove at a breakneck speed. Anybody watching would never have guessed that the man behind the wheel was one of the most law- abiding citizens in the country. For Asad it was a life and death situation. She was life, without her; he was just an empty shell. Though he encountered many roadblocks on the way, they seemed to dissipate just as his car reached the spot. It seemed that even Allah wanted the reunion of these two soul mates.
He reached the airport in record time. Without bothering to park or lock the car he sprinted inside the building not giving a glance to the appalled security officers or paying any heed to the shouts and threats directed at him.
He only had his eye and ears open for her. For the love of his life. Since he was lagging behind her by several minutes, he checked all the areas where she could be – the check in desk, the lounge, he even ventured near the rest rooms, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. With each passing minute the time of her departure neared and his hopes diminished. Meanwhile the security had been alerted to lookout for a troublesome man.
He pushed his way through the crowd, begging Allah for only one glimpse of her.
And Allah had been merciful. Asad found his gaze on her. Even though she was quite distance away and her face was visible partially, he could bet on his life that it was her. His Zoya. With tears in his eyes and her name upon his lips, he leapt forward, hoping that she would see him before she crossed over to the departure lounge.
But fate dealt a vicious blow once again as the security officers who were in pursuit for him finally spied him and began closing in. Asad desperately shouted to Zoya, willing her to hear him and turn as the men caught hold of him. She did turn but he went unnoticed by her.
Asad struggled like a lion trying to fend off the officers. He could not lose her now. No! There had to be some way, he thought, as he tried to explain the reason of his misbehavior futilely.
Suddenly the heaviness in his coat pocket became palpable. His mobile! Of course, how stupid of him! He shoved the officers away with all the strength he possessed and dashed towards his life, all the while trying to reach her phone. He banged against people one after the other but never strayed of the path, his eyes focused on Zoya. He hoped against hope, praying that she picks up her mobile.
Suddenly something slammed into him and he felt himself fall. His mobile flew from his hands and crashed to the ground, its metallic monotone echoing the emptiness that will soon fill his life.
He did not struggle when he felt several hands on him now.
He watched his love, his life, his everything, his Zoya leave him forever.
Asad closed his eyes, unable to bear the pain.
Today he had truly lost himself.
**********************
Zoya wondered why she felt uneasy. She felt as if someone was calling her. She thought she'd heard HIS voice…..no silly, she chided herself. He would never come here. He'd be home now savoring his solitude and his bitter black coffee. Home. The word burned her now threatening to engulf her as well. Home…the place for family, relations …and love. She'd not only lost the only home she ever knew but also the most cherished relations in her life. They are just sweet memories now. Suppressing a sob she made her way to the departure lounge. But what she heard next rekindled the fire that had been smothered by her.

Asad was shaken from his sorrow when he heard the song. In fact, it was as if time had stopped and all the precious memories came flooding back. The song had been coming from his mobile and had been the result of his once - in - a - blue moon childish behaviour. He had kept it as his ringtone when he'd received a call the other day from his network provider offering various songs for ringtones. That time he had hopes for a blissful future not the desolate one that was staring up at him now.
Zoya walked towards the source of the sound in a trance. It was as if her legs had a mind of their own. Her eyes located the source of the sound and then swiveled around, a new hope blossoming within her.
Her heart skipped a beat when she saw the vulnerable man before her. He looked as if his life had been taken away.
The next moment their gazes locked.
Gazing at her, Asad felt as if his heart was back in its position. His breathing seemed easier now, his tongue wanting to taste the sweet air around her. One look in her eyes told him that the physical distance between them might be short but emotional distance was another thing. He was determined to bridge between them both emotionally and physically.
Meanwhile the man whom the officers had taken to be a scalawag was actually the one whose company had constructed one of the new areas in the airport and was also a stockholder. This left them in a fix as they didn't want to get fired for tormenting such an important person.
While they stood undecided, Asad and Zoya were lost in their own world.
Asad looked into her eyes which held anger, grief and unrestrained love. He had to let her know that he wanted her. But first he had to let her know that he wanted her to stay. He had to tell her WHY he wanted her to stay. He was a man of few words but he had to speak today.
"I wish you fall in love with a girl who is free thinking and modern."
'Do you remember these words Zoya? Remember that night you had made this wish under the falling stars.'
'It became true Zoya. I have fallen for such a girl. The girl who is not a Misfit but the Miss who fits perfectly in my family. The girl who respects and values family and relations. The girl who puts others before herself. The one who never shies away from giving someone a helping hand…' Asad spoke through his tears, turning his earlier bitter words from before.
'Even I made a wish that night Zoya. That you fall for someone traditional.'
Looking directly at her and falling deep into her eyes he asked 'Did that come true for you Zoya?'
If I gaze deep into your eyes will I be able to see the bottom of your heart…
Or will I feel my own love and passion reflecting in them?
Zoya eyes stung with her tears. Finally he spoke the words she had been waiting for. All her misery, her grief, her desperation, her anguish, her heartache left her as she hurled herself into his waiting arms.
'Yes, Mr. Khan the wish came true for me as well.' she sobbed.
Looking back at his eyes that echoed her own feelings, she whispered 'I love you Mr. Khan.'
Asad smiled, 'I love you too Zoya.'
Their private bubble was suddenly burst by thunderous applause around them. For the first time Zoya saw Mr. Khan go red.
She teased him saying 'Wow Mr. Khan, I never knew you were sooo romantic.' Asad went redder still.
'Well, Miss Farooqui I learn from the best.'
'Who? Rabart? FYI, Mr. Khan Rabart's Love Guru is standing right in front of you! Which means that you are indirectly MY STUDENT! Hahahaa today I'm very proud of you Mr. Khan! And Rabart too,of course for teaching you so well!!!'
Asad sighed. And Zoya is back, he thought.
They got some warnings from the officers before they could escape from the airport.
Zoya felt lighthearted as she stepped out of the airport. The day she had kept her first steps here the future was uncertain and unsure to her. Now it seemed that her future was brighter than the sun or the stars.
Zoya had embraced whatever life had thrown at her. She'd accepted them with a smile. And life had given her a beautiful present in the form of Asad Ahmad Khan.
Looking at their intertwined hands, both of them looked at each other and made a silent promise of never letting the other go. They would be together. ALWAYS.
