Chapter Seventeen
"Kuch Dard Dil Main Bandh, Zeher Ban Jaata Hain
Reh Rehakar Ragon Mein Ghul Jaata Hain
Behne De Ae Humsafar, In Aansuon Ko
Yehi Toh Iss Dard Ko Mita Sakta Hain"
Rehaan chased after Zoya as she ran towards the park. 'Poor kid' thought Rehaan as he hurried after her 'That interview session was very hard for her. To sit there with the person who lit the fire that had scarred her physically and emotionally for so many years was not easy. To hear that person recalling that night was not easy. None of this was easy for her. To want to hate someone but having to suppress it and show compassion instead took lot of strength. She was only doing this because of her love for Phoopi, Najma and not to mention the one and only Mr Sher Khan. For seventeen years she lived with the knowledge that her mother died in that fire. The nightmares of that incident haunted her all her life. She never let anyone know of her pain, her loss and her suffering. When someone suppresses such deep emotions for so long they are bound to blow their steam someday. Today, Zoya had reached her limit and that's why the normally cool and calm girl lashed out at Mr. Khan. Ofcourse, Mr Sher Khan instigated it with his high handed behavior.'
Rehaan followed Zoya and watched her scream out her frustration at the empty park.
"Ami!" That one word sounded as if it was ripped off Zoya's soul and went ahead to echo around the park. She fell to her knees and kept on screaming for her mother with tears running down her face. The pain inside her was too much for her to handle. She grabbed a handful of grass and yanked them out. As though that action would lessen her hurt or her loss. But it didn't. Her cries came from a place so deep inside her, a place she never even knew existed within her.
Rehaan reached her and gathered her in his arms. "Shh..it's ok...'it's ok..'you are fine kiddo...'calm down...'calm down" he kept on whispering to her. Rocking her back and forth trying to console her. But she was inconsolable.
Her pain, her hurt could not be bottled anymore. Rehaan kept up the rocking motion while the girl cried herself empty in his arms. He tried wiping her tears but it was of no use...'fresh tears reappeared and stained her cheeks.
She grabbed his collar to get his attention "Rehaan...'Rehaan...'My Ami...'they killed her...'Rehaan...'so easily they killed her." She said between sobs.
Rehaan hugged her tight, "I know kiddo...'I know...'"
"He didn't even check the floors!...'we were in there! ...'And he didn't even check!...if he had...'my Ami...'" Zoya tried to say but her pain and tears were choking her.
"Sweetheart...'you said it yourself that he didn't kill your Ami...'she was dead before he arrived...'.remember...'Someone else shot her" Rehaan tried to remind her. For so long she had thought that it was a fire that killed her mother...'that now in her pain she kept forgetting that important discovery.
"I was in there!...I was a little girl and I was in there!...Rehaan" she blubbered
"I know...'I know kiddo." Rehaan tried to soothe her.
"He could have saved me...'.Rehaan...'Why didn't he save me?" She sniveled against Rehaan's shoulder
"Sweetheart...'someone did save you...'you just don't remember who." He gave her a gentle reminder once again."
She cried softly for awhile. "I have to find out...'who it was...'I have to know what happened...'I need to know who shot her...'who destroyed so many lives with their conspiracy...'I have to know where my Abu is...'Rehaan...'I don't care what I have to do ...'but I have to find out...'I will find out" She was out of breathe.
"We will...'Kiddo...'we will...'But lets not act rashly...' ok." Rehaan kissed her fore head. She was finally beginning to calm down. Tears still flowed down her cheeks like a leaking tapwater.
******************************************
Asad set out looking for Zoya. She rushed out of the house over an hour ago and he was getting worried. She was not in the right state of mind when she stormed out. True, that Rehaan was with her...'but still he wanted to know if she was ok. He had seen her head out towards the park so he took that route. He thought about the row they had earlier. He knew he had been out of line but everytime he thought about her being in danger he would just loose his cool. It was a reflex reaction. But there was more to that rebellious stand that Zoya took with him.
Tonight he had been observing her closely. She had seemed weighed down with some sort of emotional burden which he increased tenfold with his mean behavior towards her. She had faltered several times during the interview session. It was almost as if her facial mask was developing a tear. He knew she was in pain even before she lashed out at him. Probably that's what made him push her buttons. He wanted to know what hurt was festering underneath. He got his answer when she reacted. She practically blurted out the truth. This investigation with Rashid Ahmed Khan was somehow linked to her mom's murder. But how? He needed to find out how her mother died in order to answer that question. But first he had to make sure she was alright.
As Asad entered the park he saw them, they were sitting down together on the grass, in each others arms. His knee jerk reaction to that scene was jealousy and anger. But as he came closer he saw her face. It reflected her total devastation and all her vulnerabilities along with her well shed tears. Her pain triggered a reaction in his heart. It felt as if he could feel her every hurt and ache. His heart clenched tightly in his chest making it hard for him to breathe. He rushed forward towards the couple.
Rehaan saw him approach them. He nodded at Asad quietly and in a smooth move transferred Zoya into his arms, when he reached for her. Zoya didn't utter a word of protest.Asad sat there holding her trying to soothe her by whispering meaningless words. Rehaan left the couple alone and walked home.
They sat there for a long time. Asad felt contented just sitting there holding her in his arms. Their differences were put to rest temporarely. Right now all that mattered to him; was her. She had stopped crying now and was just holding on to him for support. He liked that she seeked it from him. He just stroked her arm and periodically kissed her on her forehead. She still didn't pull away. He felt as if everything was going to be alright as long as he had her like this in his arms. Forever with her seemed like a beautiful dream.
"Mr Khan?" Zoya spoke after sometime.
"Hmm?" Asad tightened his hold on her.
" Mera coffee kaha hain?" she asked in a whisper.
"Huh?" Asad wasn't sure he heard her correctly.
"Where is my coffee, Mr. Khan?" she repeated looking straight in to his eyes. "You know...'Black with no sugar...'You always offer it to me when we fight and you cross the line."
Asad gave her sexy smile and hugged her, "Ghar chalo...'Banadunga."
Then he got up and helped her up too. As she started to walk, he pulled her back in to his arms, "I was out of line." He admitted.
"I know... 'and I am right...'your father is innocent." She asserted.
"Maybe" he conceded. "But don't expect me to believe it without proof."
Since he was in such a compromising mood, Zoya decided to press her luck "O.k...'about me staying at...'"
"Let's shelf that discussion until my rattled nerves get time to calm down...'tomorrow ok...'It's late now...'Ami will be worried."
"O.k. Tomorrow then" Zoya agreed.
They walked home together.
*************************************
Rashid watched his son and Zoya walk back home from the front gate. He walked out to meet them halfway on the road. His car was anyway parked across the street. He noticed that Asad looked peaceful. It was a state he hadn't seen his son in since he was 7 years old. And Zoya was no longer looking heartbroken. I guess the kids solved their differences.Amazing! He thought. Someone finally succeeded in melting his son's frozen heart with love. He had to credit the girl. Zoya was a brilliant! Asad couldn't have a picked a better partner.
"Are you ok, Zoya?" he asked as they approached.
Asad stiffened seeing him but Zoya gave him a shaky smile
"I am fine...Uhmm'...Sorry about the outburst earlier. I was very rude I know" she replied sheepishly, obviously embarresed.
"Its ok...'it is after all a stressful situation."Rashid tried to put her to ease. He looked up to see Asad staring at him. "Uhm...'I better get going." He said.
"Bye. Take care." Zoya wished him.
Rashid waved to her and was about to cross the road when a black sedan barreled down the road in full speed towards him. It would have hit him if Zoya hadn't pushed him aside with force.
"Watch out" she yelled as both of them fell on the other side.
Asad got in to his car to chase after the sedan. As he pulled out of the driveway, Rashid blocked him and then got in to the passenger side. Asad punched the gas and the race was on.
"Did you get the license plate number?" Rashid asked
"Nope...'it had none." Asad gave a brisk reply as he tried to maneuver the car, increasing the speed.
The sedan zigzagged it way through the highway trying to get lost in the traffic. But Asad always managed to keep the car in sight. They drove around trying to out do one another.
But finally, Asad managed to trap the car in lonely alleyway by overtaking it and then blocking the car with his SUV.
The man in the car got out trying to escape. Asad and Rashid ran after him. Asad jumped in order to tackle him to the ground. He succeded. Rashid grabbed the man by his collar and questioned him "Kisne bheja hain tumhe? Bolo?... 'Bolo?"
"Yeh aise nahi bolega." Asad said right before he punched the guy.
"Bol kisse ne bheja hain tujhe?" Asad questioned...'in between his punches ofcourse.
Suddenly a black innova drove by. It slowed down as it approached them. Rashid saw a gun appearing at its window.
"Asad" he warned as he pushed his son aside. Two shots were fired then the innova zoomed past them in to the dead of the night.

Bhaijaan was waiting anxiously for a call from his lackey.
The phone rang and he picked it up in a hurry.
"Is the job done?" he questioned.
He let a sigh of relief when he received an affirmative answer.
Crisis Avoided.

Hi Sneha, thanks for the speedy update. Omg this was just crazy (in a good way). Oh Zoya, my heart just broke for her. All the bottled up emotions just became to much and I am so happy she let it all out. Rehaan and Zoya really share a beautiful friendship and I am so happy that he is aware of Zoyas troubled past (cause she has not shared this with anyone to help and support her). The moment between Asya at the park was so magical. Asad at the drop of an hat seeing Zoya so devastated and broken let go of his anger to comfort and sooth her. His love for her already runs so deep, without even confessing to her. I am also glad that he acknowledged that he went overboard with her and pushed her over the edge which is a sign that he is recognizing the effect he has on her. The father/son duo moment is a ray of hope that Asad wuld now consider that his father is telling the truth. Biting my teeth wondering if they get any info from the guy who tried to run over Rashid and did Rashid get shot trying to save Asad? If he does get shot, this may draw them closer together. Highlight moment for me was Zoya questioning Asad about her coffee lol and then taking her chances to find out if he is ok wth her staying at Rashids house. Hehehe so happy Asad held his cool and did'nt ruin the camaraderie moment. Eagerly awaiting my next dose buddy:)
