This was beautifully written. I have felt this way so many times. There can be such a turmoil going inside us but the world around seems to be moving along it's normal pace. There can be destruction & chaos seen yet the surrounding is peaceful & serene. It leaves me with more restless & angry maybe because I want my surroundings to reflect what I ma feeling but I forget that the same serene environment may bring the peace in my heart that I had been craving.
Wading her way through the dense overgrowth that had only multiplied after the recent storms, she makes her way back to the base camp where the patients are housed. She smells death and pain almost instantly. Its a stench that can live on the skin days after she leaves the camps.
Have you worked at a camp similar to what you have described? or at a hospital? There is a disinfecting smell strongly associated with a hospital that I used to despise but now welcome. The smell of death never leaves you. It is a weird phenomenon but once you have smelt it, any small thing at any time can trigger it.
But, it was too late before she realized she connected too much with the loss and suffering that disconnected her from everything else. That reckoning in-turn hardened her against the only people she allowed herself to feel anything toward.
This is so true. When I had started medical school, I had a tough time dissociating myself from a lot of things. I feel deeply so to be in this profession I had to learn to desensitize myslef.
Being humane demanded that she also dehumanized in some ways.
I absolutely love this line Hasini! I know I am going on & on about my own experiences but this update has deeply connected with me. I have felt what Zoya is feeling & I have had similar experiences (just for this update) so I understand her state of mind.

And all hell is about to break lose. Asad is coming for Zoya. I think Asad will find a different Zoya here than what he is expecting. I can't wait for the next update. Please write the next chapter soon.
