i am mighty impressed by the ph and cvs of pkdh.the are taking care of every little detail.i have never seen the cast following each and every ritual of death in any serial.how you have to sit outside the house after coming back from cremation,the food is not prepared at home...these are things which no other show care to showcase.but the cvs are taking care of such intricate details is worth mentioning.

Yeah agree PKDH does show every detail which is what makes it so emotional at times

For me who si not Indian it's a good way to learn your culture and rituals. Not Orly for the funerals, But th wedding traditions too tanks to Preeti's wedding.

Yeah I too agree!. but I think showing all this is just a way of killing time! I really do not want to see the rituals performed after someone passes away, as I do not like to see depressing stuff!

100% agree all these details make it very emotional and depressing which made me cry watching it... though I wouldn't mind on happy occasions such as weddings

Do you know the reasons behind these rituals?

Upto the 18th-19th century there were lack of sanitary conditions or even segregating sick rooms from others. Most deaths occured due to communicable diseases like plague, TB etc.

So it was stipulated that while taking a body for cremation the men-folk should wear new clothes. After the cremation the men would either go to the bathing grounds and bathe and dispose off the clothes they wore to the cremation grounds or they would return home but take a bath outside the the house and wear another fresh set of clothes. This would ensure that any germs that might've stuck to the mourners or their clothes were effectively disposed off.

During this period the women would wash and clean the entire house and the bed on which the deceased breathed his last and the clothes he wore etc would be disposed off. They would also wash all the kitchen utensils and the cooking area etc. This way any infections lingering in the house would be cleared away. Because the kitchen and cooking area would've been unusable in this period - it became a practice for the food to be brought in from neighbors and friends' or even from homes of relatives who might live in the same town tho not in the same house.

Since the women would have their share of responsibilities at home, it became a practice to deny women the right to go to the cremation grounds or perform the last rites.
