Chapter 3

As Piya pulled Abhay’s car into the parking lot, she got blocked by Kabeer and Angad. Initially, she smiled seeing them, but then she remembered that Abhay disliked them immensely, Kabeer more than Angad. She quickly forced a scowl on her face and tried to go around them.

When they refused to move, she slammed her palm on the horn.

Sorry guys.

“Move over. This is not a tea garden owned by Daddy Raichand,” Kabeer said, rolling the windows down with a wide smirk on his face.

“Of course the rich daddy got you everything but manners now, did he?,” commented Angad with a grimace.

Piya lightly stepped on the gas pedal to lurch the car forward enough to scare them.

“I’m just trying to park. Seems like your parents forgot to teach you that it’s rude to stop others from going about their day.”

Angad and Kabeer looked at each other and together burst into hard laughter.

“Excuse me?! Anything funny?,” Piya asked.her fingers wrapped tight around the steering wheel. This was getting annoying real fast.

“No, but listen. When we want a lecture on rude behavior, we shall go to our moms. Now move.”

“Why should I move?”

“Daddy forgot to teach you basic driving along with parking manners? Your car is ahead. Unless you want that mirror knocked clean off, you might wanna take a lead.”

While the three went back and forth with their insults, Abhay and Misha pulled up behind them, and Misha was more pissed than the three combined. Behind her, Abhay hid his face in embarrassment.

“Stop fighting like idiots and move! Both of you!”

Kabeer nodded immediately, breaking a sweat. Piya and Abhay looked at each other as the cars passed by. Once everyone had parked and left their cars, Abhay walked in Piya’s direction.

“I need to return your notes, can you meet me in the library?,” Abhay asked, sounding as polite as he could manage in Piya’s little voice.

Piya nodded, trying the signature Abhay grunt, which sounded more like she just had a hoarse throat. Abhay bit his lip trying not to laugh.

“Also, why are you engaging with them? I - Abhay Raichand - don't even bother to spare time on those two idiots,” said Abhay.

“Don’t call yourself Abhay out loud! People will think I’m nuts.”

She looked around to make sure no one was eavesdropping.

“Don't you think they all think that by now?”

“I am you right now, you bozo….and they call me stupid,” she mumbled.

“Fine. But don't do anything that Abhay won't do normally. Just be aloof like me. You know how I am.”

“Right, so be confusing. Pull girls close and then push them away in the next second,” Piya said sarcastically.

Abhay looked at her with narrow eyes. Before he could open his mouth in protest, the door swung open with a strong scent of perfume.

“Oh look, the college despo in another one of her despo moments. Why don't you two just get yourself a room instead of putting your shows on here for us.” T had just walked in and was now standing looking at Abhay - who she thought was Piya - with her arms folded over her chest.

“We would, but unfortunately all of them are booked by you,” Piya replied.

T looked at them both, confused. She knew Abhay always defended Piya, but this sounded so very unlike him. Of course, she was unaware of the fact that it was Piya who replied to her, not Abhay.

“Abhay darling, so rude today? Did she ruin your mood or something?” T tried to diffuse the tension between her and the person she thought was Abhay.

“Don't you people have class to attend to?,” said the librarian from behind her desk, and without another word amongst one another, the group dispersed towards their class.

As Abhay walked towards his seat, he was wearing quite the evil smile on his face, knowing that he would be free from T for the rest of the day.

“Why are you smiling like that?” Piya hissed at him.

“Don’t worry about it.” He said, taking out a notebook and pen. Piya watched with jealousy as he made a title for today’s lecture in immaculate handwriting. She wished she could write as beautifully as that.

Mrs.Dasgupta entered the room with her usual stern expression, and ushered everyone to sit down. She immediately began to write on the blackboard, and Abhay was having trouble keeping up with her. His hand rubbed against the paper and his pinky finger was starting to cramp and hurt.

“Human hands are so fragile,” he muttered.

Mrs. Dasgupta placed her chalk on the stand and turned around. Underneath the title of “Arrogance in Romance” was written a single question. The classroom was filled with small mutterings as each student read the question aloud to themselves.

“This is what we are discussing today. Arrogance in Romance, and whether it is only a romantic notion that can actually be overcome, or a false hope taught by patriarchal society to hide their flaws. Let's start with our classic Pride and Prejudice. Can someone tell me - Why does Elizabeth fall for Mr.Darcy even when she despised him for his pride and arrogance during their first meeting?” Mrs. Dasgupta asked.

No one raised their hand immediately. Some pretended to be lost in thought, some hid themselves behind their copies of the book to avoid being called on. Piya raised her hand. Since everyone saw it as Abhay raising his hand, there wasn’t a hint of surprise on anyone’s face.

Except Abhay himself, of course.

“Well it's obvious, isn't it? Elizabeth can see the awkward shy reality hidden behind the mask of pride and arrogance. Mr. Darcy is a shy individual, who had to grow up before his time came. Often people who have suffered early trauma in life are left broken and hurt, and to protect what is remaining of them, they hide behind the mask of a rude and arrogant personality. A personality they pull up as a wall around their soft inner core. Ms. Bennet can see behind and even tear that wall. She had fallen in love with not Mr. Darcy, but what was inside him. Something that even he sometimes doesn’t know is there.”

The entire class was awestruck, and no one could come up with an answer to beat it, not even Abhay. Mrs. Dasgupta smiled and praised her answer, and tried to drive the conversation forward, building upon it.

After a detailed discussion on Mr.Darcy with a detour on the beast from Beauty and the Beast and a mention of Tony Stark - thanks to Angad - the class was finally dismissed with homework on the detailed character analysis of the characters they had just discussed. Just as Piya was getting out of the class, her phone buzzed.

“Who’s calling?” Abhay asked.

“Your parents,” Piya replied as she read Haseena’s name flashing on her screen. She took a few steps to the side and answered.

“Abh—sorry, Piya, I’m going to need you to come home as soon as possible. The council has called a meeting and we are all required to be there.”

Abhay was trying to lean into the phone to try and hear, with no luck. But judging by the look on Piya’s face, he knew it was something serious.

“O-okay. I’ll…leave right away.”

She hung up, and looked at Abhay.

“What did they say?“

“I have to go back. Aunty said there was a council meeting and it’s mandatory to attend.”

She waited for him to say something. Anything that could ease the nerves. But he looked down, brows furrowing in tension. He immediately took out his phone and dialed back to Haseena.

“Is it absolutely necessary? Can't she - I - skip it for just once?” There was a long pause. “Fine. Just take care of her please.”

He guiltily avoided meeting Piya’s eyes and gave a sigh.

“Is it something to worry about?” Piya asked, looking more worried by the second.

“Just look in their eyes when you talk. Don't let them think you are weak, but don't be disrespectful either. Keep a low profile and follow mom’s lead. You will manage right?,” Abhay said, holding Piya by shoulders.

“I will have to, won't I? It's not like we have any choi..”, Piya began to speak, but seeing the worry on his face, she corrected herself. “I will manage, don’t worry about me. Just go home.”

“Take care.” He said, watching Piya rush off towards the parking lot.

Piya drove back as fast as she could without crashing into anything. Haseena and Chand were both waiting for her in the living room.

“Am I late? I tried to get here as soon as I could“

“You are just in time. Don’t worry.” Haseena said, with a soft smile. She ushered Piya outside with them, and the three broke into a sprint deep into the jungle towards the north.

Just follow her lead.

The meeting was being conducted in a dark cave under one of the mountains, behind the waterfalls. It didn't seem very cozy or comfortable, in fact, it was quite the opposite. It was damp and crawling with bats and spiders. There were some skeletons, including human skeletons, littered on the floor. The walls had paintings and splashes of dried blood. If some human came there, they would die of a heart attack, but then again, it would not be possible for them to reach that cave after crossing the treacherous lake, so they were probably safe as long as they stayed away.

Staying away, huh? No wonder Abhay keeps repeating that line.

Haseena gestured to Piya to take a seat on the stool in the corner. Piya found it hard to believe that the vampires who didn't even bother to clean their cave would spend time crafting a stool until she realized it was a human pelvis. In fact, now that she looked around, others seemed to be taking their seats on the skeleton from the grounds.

That seat was a part of someone’s body. When they were alive. Did these vampires kill them?

The thought was horrifying to her. Who were they when they were alive? Did they rot to just bone or did the bones get ripped out from their bodies? She didn’t want to sit, but Chand pushed her down once the elders started to look at them with suspicion.

“Don't attract attention to yourself,” he said from behind clenched teeth.

Piya stared down in her lap, frowning and just thinking of what they would discuss, when her ears caught the sound of shallow whimpering and the rustling of chains. As she looked up, she saw a girl had been brought in the center, limbs all bound in rusty chains. She didn't look physically injured but her disheveled appearance and the scared look on her face told Piya she had suffered mental trauma. Her hands were red where the cuffs bound her and her mouth was closed with a handkerchief tightly. There were some bruises on her arms and neck.

Before she could ask any questions, a boy had been brought on the opposite side of the girl. He was in silver chains and had a hostile look on his face. His wounds looked much more ghastly than hers did.

A vampire and a human. Somehow this hit quite close to home.

“We vampires have none but one law. We do not expose our society at any cost.” A vampire with large sharp yellow teeth had gotten up and was now addressing everyone.

He must be the head.

He wore a black cloak and his skin was unnaturally white as wax. His eyes didn't have any glint, but were sunken empty dark black orbs. Even with his human face, he looked incredibly far from a human appearance.

“But these two here…” He walked over to the boy and pulled his head up from his hair, “...have risked our exposure with their nauseating romance.”

The Raichands were visibly shaken a bit by the statement, but were careful to not spare a glance at Piya. Piya was terrified, and refrained from clutching the bone seat to dust. Her hands stayed firmly in her lap, eyes unable to tear themselves away from what was happening.

“There is but one and only one punishment for their crimes.” He paused, as if for dramatic effect, and looked around at everyone. His eyes lingered on Piya for a moment and then with a crooked smile on his face he said, “Death.”

“What?! Without a trial?”

The words escaped Piya’s mouth before she knew it.

Every eye in the cave turned to look at her. There was an ugly grimace on the head vampire’s face. He came to her in the blink of an eye and tilting her stool back, he looked her straight in the eyes and said, “Abhay Raichand. But of course I expected you to say something. The stories about you and your little pet are attracting some popularity these days. Probably this ought to show you your future if you continue on the path you are on.”

He dragged the girl closer and with his huge fingernails slit her throat and threw her on the stone cold floor. The blood oozed out her body but she was not dead. Like a fish that was thrown out the water, she thrashed violently on the ground. The boy in the corner gave an ear splitting screech but two other vampires, who seemed like this head’s assistants, held him down and clamped his mouth shut. They tightened the silver chains and he fell behind in agony.

“Let this be an example for you.”

The head now addressed the entire council again. “Nothing surpasses our one law. Nothing. This is what happens to those who break this law and threaten us in any way.” He looked at Piya again, but she was just focusing on the girl on the ground. For a moment she thought she saw her own curly haired self. The head looked at her and the girl intently.

“Kill her. Finish this story here,” he said to Piya. Piya looked at him aghast, shaking her head.

“I said - kill - her. Don't make me repeat it.”

Piya couldn't move. Her eyes switched back and forth between the head vampire and the girl, oblivious to her situation or surroundings. The commanding voice was putting pressure in her head.

“Abhay! Do as he says”, Chand hissed with a firm tone. His eyes were terrifying, unlike Piya had ever seen before. She glanced at everyone.

“And use your sharp little fangs,” said the head vampire. There was an evil smile on his face.

PIya realized there was no way she could get out of this. She looked at Haseena for help, but she just shook her head and gestured at the girl on the floor.

“You can't save her. At least be quick about it. Please. Otherwise Abhay will be next,” Haseena spoke in her mind and Piya begrudgingly got up from her seat, bent down and pierced the girl’s neck. She made sure she was fast. She didn’t want to be here anymore. The blood flowed from her neck and many vampires now itched in their seats with hungry looks in their eyes. The loud screams of the boy filled the entire cave and as she looked on, his entire body burned from all the silver he was tied into and he fell down, his skin charred. And soon both their bodies lay motionless on the ground.

Everything happened in the blink of an eye. Blood flooded the floors and filled into crevices. Piya hated that it smelled good, that it tasted good. Like her, many other vampires were salivating at the sight of the dead human’s blood, blood now being wasted on the floor.

They killed them. I killed her.

She shuddered, and wanted to run away. Only the Raichands knew that she knew. How did they find out that Abhay and her were in love? Did they suspect that she knew his secret? Would she and Abhay also end up dead on the floor for the world to jeer at, just like these two unfortunates?

Haseena took her hand and squeezed, shaking her head quickly. They had to stay and watch, until the elders decided they could leave. The bodies were disposed of, the vampire’s turning quickly to ash, and the room began to clear. The smell of blood was nauseating now. She wanted to vomit, but couldn’t.

They can kill us too.

When Abhay first told her they had to hide their relationship from the world, she wanted to scream at him. She was upset. She wanted the whole world to know that she loved him and he loved her. But after seeing this, she hated to admit that she understood why he did it, no matter how unfair it was. In a mere day, she felt her world turned upside down. The jolly image Abhay presented in college with his handsome face, and careless attitude had vaporized. The whole appeal of immortal life, pretty faces and superhuman strengths were replaced by the ugly horrifying truth. A world he always tried to keep her away from with immense difficulty. A world filled with murders, cruelty, less than human ideology, almost devillish.

The mask hiding Abhay’s vampiric reality had come off. And she was not ready to face the truth yet. She had never prepared herself for this truth.

She was the first to run after they were dismissed, away from the terror and stench of death. Where she was running, she didn’t know yet. It was going to be a long evening ahead of her.

——————————————————————————————————————————

Abhay was back at the Dobriyal mansion, sitting anxiously in Piya’s room. A sudden vampire council meeting meant only one thing. Somebody had risked an exposure and their existence was threatened. The last time it happened, they all had to relocate to a new place and start anew. Abhay wondered what exactly it could be this time. He hoped it was nothing too serious and that Piya wouldn’t risk their cover.

He could only hope.

He kept checking his phone, and the sight of the blank screen was not pleasing at all. He paced up and down in Piya’s room, trying hard to distract his mind. He sat down to do their homework instead, but with his lack of focus, he just shoved the books back in the bag. He even sat down on the lawn with Misha and Panchi and chatted with them, but Panchi’s obsession over her failed relation with Sid and Misha’s attention span of a goldfish didn't help him much. Soon he was back in the room. He lied down on bed again and tried to sleep but alas sleep would not come. He mindlessly turned the lamp on and off when a small black leather bound diary fell on the floor from behind the lamp. He picked it up and opened the front page which read “Piya to Mumma”.

No Abhay, reading someone’s personal diary is rude.

He closed the diary and put it back on the nightstand, going back to watching the ceiling fan spin and spin. However, now he found his thoughts filled with what was in the diary. After a few moments of internal struggle, he gave into his curiosity and opened it.

I’ll apologize later.

May 22, 2010

Dear mumma,

I finally made it. I have gotten into Mount College, where you studied. A dream we had since I was 5 years old. I wish you were here to celebrate with me. My roommates at the orphanage brought me a cake and threw a small party. But don't worry, I will make you proud. Like you, I will work hard to be the top of my class.

Abhay flicked through a few pages and stopped on another entry.

June 30, 2010

Dear mumma,

I saw dad today. He came to bail me out of jail when I was falsely accused of drug use by my roommate. He didn't even recognise me. But how could he, when he has not seen me for 10 years? It still hurts though, mumma. He has a whole family. And worse, his daughter is my best friend. Why did I come here, mumma? Why has my life become so difficult? I don't know what to do, mumma. I just wish you were here to help me. I miss you a lot today.

Abhay flicked more pages this time stopping on July 17. The first mention of him was written on the pages. His first day at Mount College.

July 17, 2010

Dear mumma,

I met this guy today, the one who saved me from falling down the cliff. Remember him? He was very charming, until he opened his mouth to speak. I have never seen a guy more arrogant and rude than him. All I did was try and talk to him, thank him for saving me. But all he did was push me away from his car and clean the mirror my hand was on as if I was some filthy piece of garbage. I hate him mumma. I hope I never ever have to associate with him again.

Abhay couldn't help but chuckle at this. He flicked more pages looking for another entry about him. Though he could always hear her thoughts back then, the complaints were more endearing written by her hand.

August 10, 2010

Dear mumma,

Who the hell does Abhay Raichand think he is? I didn’t even want to attend his stupid party, but his mother was much nicer to me than he was. I couldn’t refuse her invitation. First he insulted me and made me cry, then he apologized to me in front of everyone. Literally everyone. And then he made me dance with him. He covered my torn dress with his hand the entire time! Can you believe that?! And what is wrong with me mumma? Why did I agree to dance with him? And then I had to get drunk and embarrass myself in front of him by falling down and blabbering my thoughts. Urgh I’m such an idiot. Thankfully I wasn’t kicked out of the hostel.

His name was written underneath the entry, angrily crossed out with small faces drawn around it, tongues out. This page was his favorite thus far.

October 10, 2010

Dear mumma,

Ok mumma, don't get angry at me, but I had to spend the night with Abhay. I know it sounds impossible, but it happened. Otherwise that horrible Danish would have killed me. He was just saving my life. He just came on time to save me mumma. There was no other way. I think we jumped out the window. Somehow my legs didn’t break. He is a strange guy, constantly defying physics.

But mumma, I am feeling so jealous. There is someone who he loves more than his own life. And I want to steal him from her. I was in his room in his arms. I could have kissed him mumma. I almost wanted to. But he is taken. Why did he choose my head to live in?

October 13, 2010

Dear mumma,

How dare dad try to slap me, mumma? His own daughter! Today he showed to me that he has completely forgotten about me, mumma. He doubted me, his little princess! He believed that Danish over me? His own daughter? I am hurt mumma. No one believes me. Misha, who is supposed to be my sister and best friend, Kabeer, who once confessed his feelings for me in front of the entire college, none of them believed me today. No one stood by me when I needed them the most. I have no one mumma. No one except…

Why did Abhay believe me mumma? How did he know I was alone and that I needed him? How does he always manage to find me at my lowest and be there for me mumma? I am getting scared mumma. Can I even trust him?

October 25, 2010

Dear mumma,

He is an arrogant jerk. Back to his old self again. He thinks he can date T and those minions of hers and I would feel jealous then…well…ok fine, he is right. I am jealous. I want to murder that T. What happened to that girlfriend of his now? That was just a story he made up, wasn’t it? I found this picture in his wallet, mumma. I now know who he likes. I knew it. I felt his eyes. Just wait and watch. I'm gonna get him smitten by me soon and then he can forget all about that T and everyone else. Just wait and watch.

November 15, 2010

Dear mumma,

What is happening? Why does Abhay’s behavior get to me so much? He says he doesn't like me, but then the way he looks at me, the way he saves me everytime, what is all that? Am I wrong, mumma? Am I wrong in thinking that there is something between the two of us? Is it really all just in my head? Help me mumma, I don't know what to do? I can't help but want him, mumma. I don't understand this pull, this attraction, this whatever this is. Help me mumma.

Please help me.

December 27, 2010

Dear mumma,

What have I done, mumma? Of all the people I could have met and fallen for, I had to like the one who had a dark secret like that. I am so terrified mumma. I want to run to him and also away from him. He scares me mumma, but he also comforts me. How will I ever get out of this dilemma? Everything seems hopeless and bleak.

Abhay lingered on this page for a moment longer, his fingers pinching and rubbing the corner in thought. He remembered too well of how terrified she was of him, how she ran for her life like he would ever dare and hurt her. But neither could change that reality. Their journey was never meant to be a smooth one.

February 14, 2011

Dear mumma,

I wish today was real. Even this false act of love gets me on cloud nine. Like mother, like daughter. We are both fools in love, for people whom we couldn't ever have.

March 21, 2011

Dear mumma,

What is happening to him? Why is he doing all this? I can never understand him. It was just a quiet dinner with my boss. If he doesn't like me, why is he so jealous? He says he will be there for me whenever I need him. Why can't he just say he loves me, mumma. Is it really that hard? I would gladly believe him and everything but he has to meet me halfway mumma. He can't just expect me to follow him blindly. I know he has always been there for me but actions speak louder, don't they? And his only action is to always push me away from him. Just once, I wish he would accept what is truly in his heart. Just once. That's all I want.

April 7, 2011

Dear mumma,

Your daughter is in love, mumma. He said it. He finally said it. After all this time, my wait is over. He loves me too mumma. And now he is all mine. Just mine. Piya and Abhay. Forever. ❤️

April 9, 2011

Dear mumma,

Is history repeating mumma? Why does he want me to keep this relationship a secret? Why can't we be like other couples? Is he embarrassed of me? Is he lying to me? Am I unknowingly following in your footsteps, to get my heart broken? No, I promised that I would trust him. I must trust him. He is not like dad. He won't abandon me. No, I must trust him.

May 1, 2011

Dear mumma,

It was a lie mumma. All a lie. How could he break my trust? Why didn't he tell me the truth? Why hide it? And he has a brother. Right here in Dehradun. He didn't even mention him, forget letting me meet him. He is embarrassed of me, isn't he? He with his fancy swagger and that rich upbringing, and I am just a poor small town girl. After all this, he still doesn't trust me? I want to show him that I too can be trusted. I want to show him who Piya Jaiswal is. Just for his sake, I even accepted dad and stayed in his home. Just so dad won't ask questions. And he still lies to me! He is behaving just as suspicious as dad.

May 19, 2012

Hi mumma,

I have been missing for over a year, haven't I? I am sorry mumma, but all these things that happened - I didn't even know what I was doing. I have done weird things in these two years mumma. Things which are not like me at all. I didn't even know that all these things had happened. I had forgotten everything.

But anyway, I want to tell you that I am back now mumma. I remember everything, and we are back together mumma. It's weird how I forgot everything but my love for him mumma. He still wants to keep it a secret. I probably understand why, but it still hurts mumma. I am constantly feeling on edge. Like at any moment, he will once again make me forget things and walk away from my life. I constantly fear that at any moment, my life could change again and I won't even know it just like these last two years. I don't like this feeling mumma. It stresses me out. It is making me anxious. I am on my toes, wondering when the next time Abhay and I are broken up happens again.

September 8, 2012

Dear mumma,

History is repeating again. Abhay is dating Alina. And he proposed to her. He says it's all because of his dad. It's just their rivalry. I want to believe him mumma, but it all seems too familiar. Just like dad. I am just like you. A girl head over heels in love with a guy who has another public life and I am just his little secret that no one knows about. Just another failed relationship where at the end it will be I, who is left alone to pick the pieces. And no one will ever know about me. Or that I love him so much that I agreed to everything he asked me to. I will be a nobody in his life. And then left all alone. You at least had me mumma. Who will I have when Abhay decides to leave my life again?

Abhay snapped the diary shut. He spent all this time to protect Piya and keep her safe from the horrors of his world, but not once did he think about what Piya was going through mentally and emotionally. The girl whom he wanted to protect from every pain and sorrow was now suffering the most because of himself. Of course he didn't understand her.

He closed his eyes and remembered Piya in the classroom today.

Piya had understood him well. Piya was not talking about Mr. Darcy, but rather him, and he knew that now. She had peered behind his mask to look into his soul, a task at which he had failed spectacularly. He had failed in the quest to understand Piya’s heart. While he worked so hard to give Piya a beautiful healthy human life, he often failed to notice that he had become Piya’s worst nightmare, her trigger for depression.

A sorry won’t be enough to make amends, but I will try harder to be someone you can trust. I won’t let you down anymore.

There was a tapping at the window, each tap happening in progressively shorter intervals. Abhay leaned back and stared, knowing he was usually the only one to use the window to come into the Dobriyal mansion. That meant Piya had come to see him.

He rushed to the window, and pushed it open. She didn’t look so good. There was blood on her face, either from the tears or from some prey or both. It had all dried, flakes falling off the corners of her mouth.

“What happened at the meeting? Are you okay?” He asked her immediately.

“They…they made me…kill..”

She was shaking. She killed something or someone. He knew it was most likely someone. Piya was stumbling through words. She wanted to hide, hide both of them. She didn’t want that reality for either of them.

“Who was it?” Abhay asked, holding her shoulders.

“A…g-girl. Human.”

She couldn’t finish her sentence. They both collapsed on the floor. Luckily, the plush rug underneath was enough to cushion the sound. The clock had struck midnight, and their bodies switched back. Abhay realized it soon enough, as he got his powerful senses back. He quickly combed through Piya’s thoughts and understood what had happened at the meeting. He didn't have any words that could make that pain go away and so he just sat there holding her in his arms. She broke into a sob and grabbed handfuls of his shirt.

“I am sorry you had to see that.”

“Never in my dreams did I expect that. You made being a vampire look so cool and fabulous that I was blinded.”

“No, I am sorry. I never realized what I was putting you through.” He glanced at her diary which lay on her bed. Piya looked up at him, confused.

“I read your diary. Sorry…I shouldn’t have. It was rude.”

On a normal day Piya might have thought about getting angry at him for reading her private diary, but today she didn't have the strength to fight.

“I guess we both had to gain a perspective into each other's life, didn't we?”

“I suppose we did.”

They sat there looking at each other and thinking about what they had experienced that day. Abhay got up walked closer to her and tucked her hair behind her ears and kissed her forehead. He let some of his energy flow to her to help her struggle with the guilt of the day. They sat on the bed, Piya in Abhay’s lap.

“I don't want to be the reason for your pain.”

“And I don't want to be the reason for your death.”

They really didn’t know what else to say; it was all laid out in their experiences in the past 24 hours. Abhay just spent time admiring Piya, glad that their fight was now over with this out of body experience.

“I hope my family wasn’t annoying.” Piya said, staring at the door.

“I think I avoided the worst of it. Your mom is a great cook. You should enjoy her parathas. I know I did.”

Piya gaped at him, and smacked him with a pillow. “I told you not to eat them! You–”

He picked up another pillow and held it up to shield himself from her attack. Thankfully, the pillows didn’t burst like they did in the movies. Once they calmed down, they burst into quiet giggles, lying on the bed next to each other, eyes locked. Piya soon rolled onto his chest, his arm hooked underneath and around her waist.

“I should probably tell mom and dad that everything is back to normal now.”

Piya nodded in agreement, and listened in on the call.

“May I have the pleasure of knowing who I’m speaking to?” Haseena said on the other end.

“It’s me, mom. Piya and I switched back a couple minutes ago. Everything is okay now.”

“Is it? Are you both still fighting?“

Piya blushed and pawed at the bedding.

“Not anymore. Standing in each other’s shoes taught us a lesson.” He smiled at Piya and ruffled her hair.

The call ended with Haseena expecting him home in the next half hour. Abhay adjusted himself and washed his face clean, feeling a bit strange to be back in his own body. He kissed Piya’s cheek, and started towards the window. He turned back to look at the love of his life before he jumped down.

“I love you Piya. And only you.” He took her hand and kissed each finger. “I will pick you up tomorrow morning for college.”

“I’ll see you then. I love you too, and good night.”

At last, there was a smile on her face that gave Abhay immense relief. He was just about to make the final leap when the door creaked and fell open, throwing Misha to the floor. Piya stared at her, jaw hanging open in shock. Abhay fled as fast as he could.

“What the hell, Misha!” Piya yelled. “Were you spying on u—I mean me?”

Misha got up with a smirk on her face, and slowly backtracked with the door handle in her hand.

“I don’t know….was I?”
