Chapter 55

To Belong and Love

The dreams cycled again. All of them. Those which stemmed from his fears, those from her confusions, and those from their budding love. In actuality, their first kiss happened long back, even if his identity was a secret at the time.

I want to tell you about them.

All their moments, strung together, ending with a sweet ‘I love you’. She never thought how the embrace of a lover could bring her such peace. Her mother’s words and stories about love made sense to her for the first time, perceiving every sense of companionship with Abhay that she once heard about in her childhood.

Let’s stay like this, forever.

Nothing to worry about, nothing to tear them apart. Alone in his arms, alone in their world.

Abhay listened to those words meant for him, as he took a glimpse into her mind. He saw fragments of those dreams, and how each and every one of them had a hand in bringing them together. Those dreams that he created unintentionally, those dreams that used to irk him, now he could only thank them. It brought them closer.

Our story is not like any other.

He held her hand and laid them entwined across her stomach, watching over her as he lay on his side. For whatever reason Time thought it was imperative for him to protect her, he needed to find out. Before her life was threatened once again.

You’re my only light. How can I see it extinguished?

She slept with content, eventually rolling into him. Abhay held her close, staring into the fire. He was exhausted himself, having been out all night, and would have stayed there if not for her arrival. Slowly, he laid on his back, one arm under his head and the other holding her hand at the side. She followed. Her head rested atop his chest, leaving the pillow empty.

Remaining still for a few moments, he closed his eyes. Holding her close, her heartbeat filled his ears.

She can’t possibly find this comfortable.

He propped himself up carefully and placed her on her back. It was soon morning, and the rays of the rising sun began to break through the gaps in the curtains. He stood up and pulled each pair over each other to keep the light at bay. Piya needed sleep. Though she didn’t say much of her own condition, he could sense that she was weaker than ‘just a little tired’.

They must’ve known this would last overnight. Her things must be in the guest room.

He left the room briefly. Haseena was out in the hall, on her way to see him. She was pleased to know that they were together. It was evident in his eyes, how content he was by having Piya by his side.

“Is she asleep?” She asked, looking behind his shoulder.

Abhay nodded.

“She’s weak. I can only assume it’s from when she got her memories back and saw ours.”

“She did say something like that. Speaking of which.....”

She pulled out a thin envelope sealed shut with The Circle’s seal. He turned it about in his fingers, brows furrowing.

“They’re finally holding an assembly. It’s about time.”

“Try to keep her condition under wraps, for now. If they find out her memory has returned, they’ll take more drastic measures. I’ll be with you of course, but make your best effort.”

He had to keep their relationship under careful wraps, for now.

“I will, mom.”

She pat his shoulder and let him be. He tucked the summons in his back pocket and walked past, making not a single sound. The guest room was down the hall. He found her small bag stowed against the side of the bed, packed with the intentions of an overnight stay, as he figured. He took it back with him, watching the sun rise to its peak as he walked back down the hall. She was still fast asleep when he returned, and curled up to him as soon as he lay next to her again.

You always know I’m around, huh?

Abhay struggled to believe their proximity even now. He worried it all be a dream that he’d wake up from. But for now, he couldn’t shy away from holding her. His arms wrapped around her and pulled her close. He drowned himself in the sound of her heartbeat, the fragrance of her skin, and the warmth of her love. Incredibly greedy, and never wanting to let her go. He was happy. Until recently, he thought that was impossible.

It was reminiscent of when he found out Maithili’s truth. He embraced it, made her felt like she belonged. Piya had done the same for him, but it felt different somehow. Perhaps because he posed more danger to her. As the other vampires taunted, keeping a snack around.

You’ve taken my old place, loving something unnatural.

“I won’t let you ever suffer the way I did.” He whispered in her ear. To keep her smile was his necessity.

Piya stirred as he lay on his back again. After the hour went by, she woke up to the thin rays of the sun shining over her eyes. She blinked and blocked it with her hand, looking beneath her. Abhay had given up on keeping her in one place, an impossible task while he was around.

His eyes were closed, her head resting on his chest. The arm under her wrapped snug around her waist. Quite calm, incredibly still. He wasn’t breathing either. She was staring at a pristine marble statue.

How is he so still? Is this how vampires sleep?

Her mind slowly adapted to his inhuman characteristics. His skin was absolutely chilling, heart silent, and body like steel. Even his hold was unyielding. None of it was particularly bothering to her. Just different.

The sunlight broke through the smallest slit between the curtains, irritating him out of his temporary slumber. He thought he closed them all. It began to burn his eyelids. She pulled the blanket over her raised arm as shade, gently shaking him.

“Abhay....”

Her voice was soft, full of concern. He opened his eyes and gazed at her, like he wasn’t sleeping to begin with.

“What are you doing?”

“Protecting you from the sun.”

He smiled and set her arm down, blocking the sunlight with the flick of a wrist. There was now a thin column of shadow blocking its path, darkening the room. And his hand continued to swirl with them. It was times like this where he wished to be lazy. He didn’t feel like getting up again to close them himself. He wanted to stay with her.

“Does it burn?” She asked, worriedly.

He shook his head and cupped her cheek.

“I have my daylight ring on. So it’s only a little irritating. Don’t worry.”

She relaxed and lay against him as he turned to the side.

“Are you feeling better now?”

“How did you know I wasn’t?”

“We’re bound to each other. I can sense it.”

It was much stronger after their souls met and permanently forged their connection. She looked into his icy grey eyes.

“Is that how you always knew when I was in trouble? But we weren’t together like this back then, then how?”

The blood he liked so much was the answer. He disliked that answer. He averted her gaze. Drinking her blood without her knowledge, even if he did it with any other human without taking their lives, didn’t sit right with him.

“It’s not something I’m proud of doing.”

“Tell me. I won’t get mad, promise.”

She took her pinky and hooked it with his.

“Pinky promise.”

A vampire can never escape the pull of blood. Even now, her blood was calling to him. Gradually was its temptation reaching for his control, to destroy it. If he hadn’t hunted so much last night, it would’ve happened again, taking advantage of her vulnerability when she was asleep.

“We also share a partial blood bond. Created by exchanging blood.”

Blood?

She knew what he was implying, but was unable to remember such a time when the opportunity presented itself.

Maybe he wiped my memory those times, or.....

Then she remembered that he was the one to find her after the wolf attack. She had to have been bleeding then. And if her knowledge of vampire myths served her right, it would’ve been hard to resist. She tried to make light of the truth.

“Did I taste good, at least?”

He stared at her, eyes narrowed in disbelief.

“Your reactions are starting to scare me.”

“What else am I supposed to say?” She pouted. “I already promised you that I wouldn’t get mad.”

He looked away again.

“It was good enough to make me lose control. Forgive me, it’s been twice now I’ve done it.”

And it was still his favorite. The beast begged to be freed and do it a third time. Right here, right now. His lips parted and he panted, as just thinking about it was enough to get the beast riled up. He burrowed his nails into his own palm.

“It’s okay. It’s hard to control, isn’t it?”

He took deep breaths and nodded, squeezing his eyes shut.

“But after so long, it’s no excuse. It was reckless behavior.”

He had the nerve to drink it when she was gravely injured.

“That’s why I didn’t think it’s safe for us to be together like this, Piya. I’m the predator and you the prey. The closer you’ll be, the more I’ll want it. I don’t want to endanger you.”

“You’re not. And I’m not faulting you for it.”

“You treat it so....normally.”

She touched his cheek.

“If you could do the same centuries ago, why can’t I?”

He sighed and touched their foreheads. Piya closed her eyes. She felt nothing but safe in his company.

“Normally these partial blood bonds vanish quickly, since we don’t stay near humans we drink from for long. But since you and I have been together so much, it’s only gotten stronger.”

“You said partial. Why not complete it?”

“That’s a whole other commitment. And a discussion for another time.”

She didn’t ask further on the matter, The fire was dying out, and the room invited a slight chill back inside. Yet she pressed herself into him like his severe lack of heat wasn’t bothering her.

“Can I ask you something, Abhay?”

“Go ahead.”

“You loved Maithili a lot, didn’t you?”

He looked forlorn, and stared blankly behind her. The last time she asked about Maithili, he didn’t feel much. Somehow her knowing what had happened, and the mention of Maithili’s name made him feel a different kind of pain.

“I did. A lot. She used to be such a kind and gentle soul. I used to think, that we’d always be together, until death did us apart. But none of that came true, and it didn’t matter in the end, did it?”

Piya swallowed and felt an ache in her chest. This look of vulnerability and anger was new to her. The last time she asked, he looked nonchalant. But a name had its own power.

“I accepted her, stayed at her side when she needed it. And what did I get in return? I lost my humanity, and my family. And god knows when, but I lost her too.”

His eyes shifted like he was trying not to cry. And certainly, not for Maithili. Just towards his messy life. Piya held his hand tight.

“Just know that whatever occurred back then, it wasn’t your fault.”

He breathed out heavily, and looked at Piya. Her own eyes gathered with tears.

“Don’t cry.” He whispered, wiping them with his thumb. “I’d hate to be the reason of your tears.”

“Stop blaming yourself for everything, idiot.” She lightly hit his chest. He softly smiled and kissed her cheek. Each was adept at changing subjects.

“Did you see our families too? Maa, Baba, and everyone else?”

She nodded.

“I started back when you were just a baby. A very cute baby at that.”

“That’s pretty far back.”

“Mhm.....I also didn’t expect Abhay to be just a nickname.”

He chuckled.

“Siddharth used to tell me he couldn’t say the whole thing, so he shortened it. To him, I was always Abhay.”

“And yet, I couldn’t recognize you at times. Abhayendra was very different from Abhay.”

She played with the fabric of his top.

“I know. He was much more carefree and brighter than this.”

He gestured at himself and the room, colored in dark reds and blacks.

“Piya and Piyashree might be the same. But Abhayendra is an artifact of history now, separate from me. He died three centuries ago, soaking the soil with his blood in an unnamed forest. He lived and died human.”

Piya hated remembering that scene, and covered his mouth with her palm. She shook her head, and held back more tears. He realized that she had literally seen him dying and looked at her sympathetically.

“It seems I scared you in a different manner.”

“Never talk of it again.”

He placed a finger to his lips and shook his head.

“But Abhay is still here. With you. And I’m not going anywhere.”

She hugged him tight. It was a lie that his old self was gone. It was just hiding in him somewhere, only now re-emerging. Like that adorable smile.

“What else did you see? Hopefully something happier?”

“Your childhood. Your parents. Lots of things. I couldn’t ever think it got as bad as it was.”

“Neither could I.”

She shared the moments she found the happiest. Plentiful were these kinds early on. Their times at the palace as kids, the painting, Siddharth and Mandu’s wedding, so much in between. He looked nostalgic as she described them in concise details.

“I’ve always wanted a family like yours...” Her voice faltered, envious that hers wasn’t like it. Envious on his behalf, that he couldn’t be with them either.

Abhay tried to comfort her. There was still another problem in this city for her, a more permanent one.

“Will you ever tell him the truth?”

“No. I don’t want anything to do with him, and there’s too much at stake for that to be possible.”

She changed the subject again, as Abhay stroked the back of her hand with his thumb. Just his eyes alone were enough to calm her.

“I can see why you like spring. It was beautiful there. Like a garden found only in the heavens.”

“Springs there aren’t the same anymore. Not much of it is left, with the development and all.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll make sure our hill looks just as beautiful.”

“Will you still practice there? From time to time?”

“Why won’t I? My flowers need the music to grow.”

She felt that radiating warmth inside her again. And his eyes were changing color too. Flecks of red were there and fleeting.

“Are you doing that?”

“Hmm?”

She couldn’t put into words what she was feeling. But it wasn’t the first time it had happened. Abhay touched their noses together and pecked her lips. The lightest of his touches sent sparks through her skin.

“How strongly do you feel it?”

“It’s overwhelming, but in a good way.”

She held his shoulders and breathed in. This was her happy place. She didn’t want to leave it.

“Normal vampires experience emotions twice as strong as that of humans. And us Duralis vampires, twice of that.”

She recalled seeing his anger seemingly cause direct pain to another vampire. Perhaps this was the same.

“Yet you rarely show them....you barely did when we first met.”

“I’ve trained myself not to, and being the way I am helped in that matter. No need to show it if I’m on my own most of the time. My emotional state has its own power.”

“Like what?”

“You’re feeling it right now. They can manifest in different ways, towards the people they are meant for. It’s why we’re supposed to keep them under control. It’s easy to get reckless with them.”

“It doesn’t hurt.”

“I don’t think true love can create pain.”

She blushed. What she was feeling, it was a physical manifestation of his love for her. An abstract concept in physical form.

“Negative emotions bring discomfort and pain. Positive emotions heal and comfort. Sometimes they manifest in erratic manners, and sometimes to address the cause of the emotion.”

“Every emotion?”

“Every emotion. The usual vampire can indirectly influence a person’s moods with it, but don’t have the power to manifest them like I can.”

She felt like she was floating on a cloud, until he reigned it back. If he wanted, he could even lull her to sleep with it. It was that calming.

The birds commenced their morning song, perched atop the trees outside. Abhay sat up, bringing Piya with. She rubbed her eyes and brushed her hair behind her neck, looking up at his handsome face. His features were much clearer and much softer now.

“I brought your things from the guest room.” He brushed stray hairs off her eyes. “I’ll let you freshen up.”

“Are you going downstairs?”

He nodded.

“You must be hungry. None of the servants are here so I thought to make your breakfast.”

Her stomach growled as soon as he mentioned breakfast. She forgot to eat after returning from Time’s realm. He chuckled.

“I’ll be quick then.” Piya said.

He was getting the hang of it, of being able to openly show his affection to her without repercussions. He kissed her temple, rising to his feet and leaving her to privacy in his room. Piya found her bag atop his bed, a towel placed next to it.

Even the small things can show how much you care for me.

She stretched her arms and back with cracks and pops, and looked out one of the windows. The snow was melting under the bright sun, some revealing patches of new grass underneath.

“It’s such a nice day out.”

Everything felt new and exciting. She held the ‘S’ pendant in her hand. So much had changed in the past week, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. Having Abhay at her side was a gift she didn’t even know she could have.

I did find love here, mumma. You were right after all.

Chapter 56

World of Darkness

Her many questions drew her a path to the study. Of all the books she could find on the supernatural, the ones she found here were of truthful origins. Not myth, nor human-made fiction. More-so information. Rules, and origins. She began flipping though some of them, gaining the interest for more knowledge without having to bother Abhay for every single question she had. There were too many; even she’d get tired of asking.

The one she held currently was about vampires in particular. Instead of linearly, she read randomly. There was just too much to finish in one sitting.

Blood is the only source of nourishment for a vampire. Its energies sustain their undead bodies, acting as a primal source of their power. Fresh human blood provides the most energy, then the blood of various animals. They may also drink from other vampires and other supernaturals, though benefits vary.

As per the dictum drafted by The Circle in the year 1800, vampires are forbidden from taking a human prey’s life. It is punishable by eternal imprisonment, or even a true death.

She curled up in the armchair, immersed in the material, and read through the passages detailing the Duralis vampires.

The Duralis vampires are rare, only created directly by a member of the First Family, if they possess a potent soul. As of the year 2015, there are only about 300 in existence.

They are weaker than the First Family, and stronger than normal vampires. Their cravings for blood are more frequent. The methods to kill one are unknown.

She continued on.

A vampire’s soul can be considered a separate entity from the vampire themself even though it is trapped in them. Having control over their soul is considered a must for the Duralis. As the soul is fueled by the power emotion gives, controlling emotion is imperative. Normal vampires are afflicted with this as well, but as their souls aren’t as potent as a Duralis, there is not pressure to do so. Their soul can only project their emotions as slight changes in mood. Duralis vampires, on the other hand, can project them as many more things, like dreams, hallucinations, physical and mental pain.

“Dreams too?”

Now she wondered if Abhay was causing them. Without fail, in every vivid one she could fully remember, good or bad, he was present. And that was strange on its own. Maybe he knew and just didn’t tell her.

I’ll ask him later.

A gentle knock at the door broke Piya’s concentration. It was Haseena, who invited herself inside after finding Piya alone. Piya closed the book and stood up.

“Good morning, aunty.”

“Good morning. How are you feeling?”

Piya nodded and smiled.

“Much better. Good as new.”

Especially with Abhay there beside her, the sleep was fruitful. Haseena warmly smiled, clasping Piya’s hand between her palms.

“I realize we never had the chance at a full conversation. I hope I’m not interrupting you.”

Piya shook her head. Abhay was busy in the kitchen, Siddharth and Mandu seemed to be in their room still, or out somewhere. This house was a labyrinth inside. A dwelling that fit more with the idea that vampires could be found here. So much to explore and see.

Piya examined the cover of the book she was just reading. These books were thicker, older, and smelled of their age.

“Gaining some knowledge, I see? It must be a lot to take in. Our worlds are completely different.”

Just the one on vampires was as thick as her head.

“All the more reason to learn. I was just curious.” She looked through the rest. “Isn’t it risky to keep these with all your servants around?”

“Not at all. Because humans can’t read them. The pages appear blank. Perhaps because of your bond with Abhay, you’re not affected by the seal put upon them.”

Piya stared at the pages in awe. Both ladies looked at the collection together.

“Are all these of similar topics?”

“Different. Details on each supernatural, the histories of this world, spellbooks and much more. It is dense material. Don’t hesitate to look through or borrow any of them. I’ve been told you enjoy reading as much as Abhay does.”

She nodded.

“Our first normal conversation started with these.”

And ended with his piano.

Haseena laughed, hiding it with grace with her hand.

“Normal, is it? He can be difficult. But you’re the first one to not complain.”

Piya blushed, and hugged the massive text to her chest. She looked at Haseena, who physically looked no older than a woman in her late thirties.

Different stories.

“How long have you been around for?”

“Ah...about 500 years. Though my origins aren’t as grand as my children.”

Piya sometimes forgot she was standing before former royalty. Not descendants, but the actual figures.

“I was abandoned at birth. I never knew my parents, only an old woman who cared for me until she passed away from age. All I remember clearly is surviving in my later years due to a girl my age, who took pity and convinced her family to let me work as a servant. Back then, what ended up happening is only now being slowly accepted today. I fell in love with her. I confessed this truth, and I was beat ruthlessly and driven out of the village. I don’t know what happened between then, but then I woke up like this. The blood loss from my injuries made the ritual simpler for my creator, I’m sure.”

“Blood loss?”

“We can only be created by having our blood drained and replaced by that of the creators. The bite itself is the activation.”

They all meet their ends bleeding to death, which made their saving more likely, and the draining part skipped. Piya found it interesting, yet gruesome.

“Who saved you?”

“I’m not sure. Some vampires abandon their creations soon after turning them. I never knew mine. Lots of year spent just wandering on my own, when typically it is not advised for a fledgling to be without their creator. I even tried searching for them, since there is a bond forged in this act of turning. But not all vampires are like us, not all of us are turned from the brink of death. The First Family was created from a ritual for eternal youth and vitality conducted improperly. An accident, if you will.”

“Abhay told me a little of them. So every vampire is connected to them?”

“You can think of it that way. Like a branching tree.”

There was a lot Piya could learn from her. And likely, the others did too.

“What made you decide to take them in?”

“I didn’t want them to feel like they had no home and no name.”

Just like she had.

Piya nodded, feeling sympathetic. Haseena stood and brushed her hair with her palm.

“You’ll learn many things, and hear many stories, little by little. Think of yourself as being a part of both worlds now.”

Both....

Abhay was her link. As well as her soul. For whatever cosmic reason it was drawn to the world of darkness, she wanted to understand it more.

“....and ours is sorely lacking of musicians like yourself. Too much literature and art, and not enough music. I would love to hear you play one day.”

She blushed and eagerly nodded. It was always a pleasure of hers to play for others.

“Shall we go outside? I believe Abhay was cooking for you.”

“Okay.”

This place had no dearth of pictures covering the walls. One on the mantle, background of a grand dance hall, captured a freckled woman with thick and curly strawberry blonde hair, and light brown eyes. She was posing for the camera with a rose in hand. In the corner of the handmade frame, an engraving.

With love, Eliza.

Piya smiled at the photo, taking its frame in her hands.

“My soulmate.....she lives in Australia. Siddharth calls her my exact opposite. Life of the party, he says.”

“But it would fit perfectly that way.”

Just like her and Abhay. Just like how winter always melted into spring. Two pieces to a puzzle.

“Do you see her often?”

“Often enough for our wishes. I was to see her next week, however something important came up. So I’ll have to keep her waiting one more week.”

Haseena turned her head towards the kitchen.

“He’s taken over the whole kitchen, hasn’t he? Now I shouldn’t be the reason to keep him waiting.” She teased.

Piya nodded, catching the smell of fresh toast. She wandered to its source and peeked her head into the kitchen. Abhay was fully immersed with cooking. Now it seemed bizarre, seeing a vampire cooking human food. She remembered how his nose wrinkled in disgust when she offered him one of Ms. Julie’s muffins.

The air was now scented with rich cinnamon.

I wonder how bad it smells to him.

There were no reactions visible to her on his face. He smirked out of sight, slicing fruits while listening to her thoughts. She could only convince herself that she was perfectly hidden from him. But he knew, and focused on her lovely scent instead of the food he was preparing. No matter what it was, all human food and drink smelled wrong and unappetizing to them, save the coffees and alcohols. But that was the least of his troubles. She was the one who needed to enjoy its smell and taste. With whatever ingredients the kitchen had stored, he prepared a small bowl of oatmeal topped with blueberries and cut bananas and strawberries, along with two slices of buttered toast.

It smells so good to me though.

Piya licked her lips, mouth watering. Her stomach growled. She placed her hand over it and blushed, hiding away behind the wall. He looked cute while in concentration. Someone held her hand, and looking up, it was Abhay. Haseena smiled at the two and quietly left them alone.

“Hungry?” He asked.

Piya nodded. He took her to the stove, and fed her a spoonful of the warm oatmeal.

“How is it?”

“It’s yummy.” She beamed. “How do you all cook so well without being able to taste?”

“Practice, I suppose. Being able to memorize and follow recipes to the last detail must help somewhat.”

“No wonder you don’t show up to lecture. You’re all natural geniuses.”

“That’s an interesting take on it.”

No doubt their minds were sharper than the average human. He chuckled.

“Just a few more minutes.”

She threw her arms behind her back, and circled around him, catching eye of the bat tattoo on his right shoulder blade. Its meaning was still unknown to her.

Vampires can turn into bats, I think.

She touched her fingers to it. It didn’t glow like the crescent moon did. But it did elicit some response from him. A tell that he wanted to feel more of it.

His skin is so soft.

Her cheeks turned pink, both feeling the sparks upon a touch to his bare skin. Abhay stopped momentarily, and held in his growing urges, though he liked the sensation. Her heart took off. She only barely remembered her question.

“What’s.....this one?”

“Clan mark. Every vampire has one.”

“Seems awfully generic for the likes of a vampire.”

“I unfortunately did not pick it. Whoever the first leader of our clan was did.”

“Well, whoever they are, they’re not very creative.”

They broke into hushed laughter together. Her hand lingered on his back. The heady rush of warm against cold was diverting her attention. Abhay tensed up, and she slowly pulled back her hand. There was a moment of awkward silence between them, which Abhay tried to hide by tapping his fingers hard against the counter.

His thoughts and the beast’s thoughts were merging together.

Stay close. It’s unbearable otherwise.

As he finished plating her food, he caught Siddharth eavesdropping from the far corner of the living room.

“Why are you hiding?” He called, rolling his eyes. Piya wasn’t sure of who he was talking to, unable to find anyone around herself. And Siddharth realized they didn’t have to put up an act anymore and appeared right next to her. But even Piya was growing accustomed to it. She didn’t jump like she did in the beginning.

“Good morning, Piya.” He greeted, ignoring Abhay.

“Good morning.” Piya said, with a wide smile. Abhay intentionally let out an exasperated sigh and shook his head.

“You look much better now. I hope Abhay didn’t trouble you too much last night.”

He cleared his throat and winked at him. The alternate implication behind his statement was clear. Piya choked on a bite of toast. Abhay rubbed her back and side eyed Siddharth.

“There was no such thing.”

“You know me, little brother, I love to joke with you. But I know you’re responsible.” He pat Abhay’s back and sat down on Piya’s right side. “But in all seriousness, I’m glad you two made it home safely.......and together.”

She blushed and nodded. Abhay pinched her cheek and set the bowl on the island countertop. He sat down on her left side, and began to feed her himself.

“I’m not a kid, Abhay.”

“But you are someone who passed out cold at our doorstep yesterday, or so I’ve been told.”

She narrowed her eyes.

Who told you?

If he didn’t say anything in his room, he didn’t sense it for some reason. Piya looked around. Siddharth slowly held his ears, and she blushed out of embarrassment. He broke through Abhay’s mental barrier and kindly informed him of her condition late last night.

“But I’m okay now.” She muttered. Siddharth stood up to leave them be.

“Let him spoil you, Piya. He doesn’t do this for just anyone.”

She looked at an equally embarrassed Abhay, who held up the spoon for her. There was a lot, the bowl deceptively small. The toast was gone, along with the space in her stomach.

“But—“

Halfway empty, and she was starting to feel full.

“No excuses. You’re finishing it all.”

She grumbled to try and show her dissent, but that didn’t stop him. He always took care of her like this, with a sternness borne from care.

After the last spoon, he stood up and placed the dishes in the sink. Piya hopped off the chair and hugged him from behind.

“Thank you. It was very yummy.”

“You’re welcome.”

He turned and kissed her forehead. His nose twitched, and nuzzled her temple. A hand thumped impatiently against the door, cutting their moment short. Abhay groaned, and squeezed Piya’s shoulders.

“Stay here.”

She nodded, noting the concern in his features, and pressed her back against the front wall. Her spine crawled with chills. In the living room, Haseena greeted a small group of aides from the main council. They had come for a simple task, but seeing as they were Dragomir’s aides in particular, it was a check on their whereabouts.

Mandu, who had been out hunting alone, led them inside, nursing a broken and bloody nose with her handkerchief. Another vampire was in the same state, and they glared at each other.

“Umm....can I hear an explanation for what happened?” Siddharth asked, looking at the two.

“Don’t worry about it, Siddharth. Yutaka and Mandakini got into a little scuff on the way here.”

“Little is an understatement. I’m going to wash up.” She huffed, walking straight into the kitchen. All they did was mock Abhay’s behavior. She replied with a fist to the face.

Piya was huddled against the wall, with a look of concern towards. She nodded once to Piya to ensure she was okay.

Her scent is everywhere, she thought, splashing the cool water to her face. She stood next to Piya after, hugging her body to hopefully confuse their senses.

The two vampires still took notice.

“I smell a human, Haseena. Still keeping around useless servants?”

“That’s a personal preference, Winston. And nothing to concern yourself with.”

Abhay leaned against the wall at the back, arms crossed and glaring. Piya’s scent was masked enough by Mandu’s this time, protecting her identity from these rats.

“Be careful. Your son might fall for another one, and create more work for us. Do you know how tiring it is to wipe a human’s memory permanently?”

Piya froze in fear. Who were they to wipe her memory? She took a step, but Mandu grabbed her shoulders and shook her head, putting a finger to her lips.

Abhay stood straight, and looked over them. Only two of the three were vampires, younger ones at that. Weaker than him. He walked to them, hands shoved in his pockets. Piya noticed the entire floor’s light was dimmed.

His voice was haunting.

“You do realize that I can tear both of you to shreds right here, right now. I had extended hunting trip last night. Won’t even take me a second.”

The usual vampire was conditioned to fear the scarlet eyes of a Duralis. It worked clearly in this setting too. He wouldn’t break a sweat beating them down. Or killing them.

“Lay off the jokes.” He warned.

They muttered between themselves. The warlock in charge zapped them both with a bolt of electricity from his fingers.

“Quiet.”

“Are you here for the marking?” Haseena asked sternly.

“Yes. If I may, your wrists please.”

Abhay kept staring at his potential victims. The warlock took a small blade from his robe and slit their forearms down the length of the bone, and by the spilling blood, created a binding mark that would stay until they made their attendance to the assembly. Their lives were leveraged to ensure all leaders attended.

“Let’s go.”

The door slammed shut, splintering wood. Piya was frustrated, and on the verge of tears. Mandu let go, and she bumped into Abhay as she exited the kitchen, unhappy with the glowing gash in his forearm.

“Will they take my memory again?”

Abhay shook his head and cupped her cheeks.

“I won’t let them. At any cost.”

“Who were they? I don’t understand.”

“We have a governing body of our own, called The Circle. It is a law they defined that humans can’t ever know of supernatural existence. After we saved you from Jeh, the council head ordered your memory to be wiped.”

She looked at the door, confused. Their bond was special, irrefutable by even Nature.

“Why? Won’t explaining our relationship be enough?”

“It won’t be easy. Having a human as a soulmate is so rare that it’s practically a myth.”

She didn’t want to forget him again.

“Do we have to hide it?”

They weren’t the normal couple. His expression and silence told her everything. Piya sighed.

“I wish to keep it short. If they realize you have it while the tensions are high, I fear they may do something worse.”

Time couldn’t help them, again and again like this. He closed his eyes and felt for any strange presences. It wouldn’t be out of question to send a spy after him. Those faeries were good at hiding.

Nothing, so far.

“I don’t like this.” She whispered, head hanging low. He kissed her forehead.

“I don’t either. But it’s to keep you safe. I’m sorry.”

Mandu was peeking out the door to make sure they were gone.

Piya looked saddened.

“Don’t worry. This will be over soon.” She assured.

Abhay held her hand, feeling helpless. Haseena then spoke up.

“I think you all should return to Dehradun at this moment. Your absence won’t be brushed aside, especially with Piya involved.”

There was general agreement in the room. Piya gathered her things, and they bid farewell to Haseena in the next hour.

“Have faith in your love. Everything will be alright.” She reminded Piya. Piya was especially hesitant in leaving, as it meant the beginning of another separation. Her words made it impact less painful.

The door opened again to the Dehradun mansion, but now Abhay was with her, hand in hand. He held it tight.

“I’ll drop you home.”

He walked with her through the forest she was most familiar with, spreading his shadows around in a tight ring to hide them. They passed their hill, and Piya cheered up just a little at the new buds that were blooming.

Walking slow, to spend the most of their time with each other. He accompanied her to the door of her villa, and took her hands.

“Will we still be able to see each other?”

“I’m not going to let anyone stop me. And I won’t let anyone harm you because of it” His irises turned cobalt, burrowing into her soul. “But we need to be a little careful. Do you trust me?”

She nodded.

“It’ll only last a week or so. Once their anger has calmed, I will talk to them. In the meantime, I want you to relax. Okay?”

“Okay.”

“And if you need me, for any reason, just call. I’ll be there.”

“I will.” She smiled, wiping tears away. “Goodnight.”

Even with arguably small distance, he’d miss her. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her in for a kiss, memorizing her taste for the night. Her heart finally calmed.

“Goodnight. Sleep well.”

He whispered a soft ‘I love you’ in her ear, and vanished after she was safely inside. Like a shadow borne of the dark. She watched the empty roads fill with it, knowing that he was a part of it. Somewhere around, always with her.

I haven’t checked this forum for so long. Imagine my surprise when I came across this beautiful story. It is mind blowing. What is more fascinating is that even after nearly 10 years, there is some one who is willing to write a story about my favourite couple. Waiting to read further chapters.
