Chapter 10
Party at Jeh and T's House
T: Oh Tanya, I am so happy to see you again after so long. We haven't met for the last 10 years, when your Dad shifted to UK. I still remember those yummy cookies your mom used to make when we were kids.
Tanya: To tell you the truth those cookies used to be made by our house help Ms Shamta.
T: Oh really, wasn't she the same one who was recommended to your Mom by one of her friends from Navi Mumbai.
Tanya: Yes, some Waghela aunty she was. Had a house on Palm Beach Road but rarely used to live here. She used to rent out her house most of the times, and so when mom was looking for a cook, she sent hers to us.
T: Do you have any idea where she could be working now? I was thinking to hire a good cook for myself you see.
Tanya: nah, not working for someone. She got married to someone in Worli and the guy had a vacant shop, so she set up her own bakery there. I heard she is doing good business nowadays.
T: Oh that's great. Hey could you give me her address, maybe I would just convince her to suggest someone as good as her, and if possible, I may also bribe her to part with some of her recipes. You see Jeh loves hand made cookies.
Tanya: Of course I have it. I just got it from one of mom's friends. I was planning to buy some cookies to take away back to UK next week. Here you go.
This was no accidental or casual conversation. Ever since Abhay and Pia have started updating them about the way their investigation is moving, T had been worried for them. Digging up past crimes can be extremely dangerous. When Pia had mentioned that the house had once belonged to some Mrs. Waghela who used to live in London most of the times, she had been raking her brains as she was sure she had heard that name somewhere. And the moment Tanya had called her up telling her about her visit to India, she had immediately recalled about Shamta and her previous employment at Waghela's Palm Beach Road residence. Having obtained her address, she did not waste time and set out to meet her next day itself.
Worli - Shamta's Bakery
Shamta: what can I do for you Madam?
T: My oh my, Aren't you the same Shamta who used to work at Tanya Wadia's house earlier?
Shamta: Yes I am, but who might you be?
T: Well I don't think you would remember me after so many years, but I am Tanya's best friend who used to visit her often.
Shamta: Oh my God, baby Tanushree. You look so pretty now. Wonder how time passes.
T: Oh wow. You remember me even after so many years.
Shamta: Yes madam, I have a very good memory especially when it comes to kids. I love kids,a nd that's why never forget them. I even remember the little baby girl who came to live in my previous employment at Palm Beach Road for six months.
T: Palm Beach Road. Oh what a coincidence. My sister in law has also just come to live in the same area. And incidentally it was only after coming there did she realize that she had inhabited the same house as a kid too, though just for six months.
Shamta: Oh, that really is a strange coincidence.
T: You said you used to work in that area. Would it be possible for you to know anything about her? Actually she is very excited to know about her life here as she does not remember it much since she was only 3 years old at that time.
Shamta: Maybe, if I would have met her. What was her name you said?
T: Pia. Pia Raichand. But she was Pia Rathod before marriage. Her father was an army man and he went by the name of Major Danish Rathod.
Shamta: Oh my God. Are you talking of baby Piyu? I was talking of that baby only.
T: You know her?
Shamta: Of course I do. Such a cute baby she was. But sadly her father had to send her away to her aunts. Did you say she is your sister in law and is she back in the same house?
T: Yes she is. She is my husband's cousin and has now bought the same house where she now lives with her husband. Would you like to meet her?
Shamta: of course I would love to. But, I can't leave the bakery. My husband is useless. Who will run the business in my absence?
T: If you don't mind, can I bring her here? She would love to meet you.
Shamta: Really. Well that will be awesome. You can bring her here on Tuesday evening as that is usually my most free day. Not many customers come on Tuesdays.
T: I would surely do that.
T then went to pay a visit to Abhay and Pia and took someone with her. They welcomed her home and she introduced the person she had brought with her as a gardener and said that such a big garden surely needs additional help. Before Abhay and Pia could protest she went on: One of my friend's mothers recommended him. She used to live in Pune before marriage where he used to work earlier at a certain Dr. Roy's house. Her own mom was a regular patient of Dr. Roy and so she was aware how well he used to maintain the gardens and had often called upon his services for looking after her own garden.
Abhay and Pia understood her intentions and mentally thanked her. They brought her in and began discussing their findings and how they have hit a road block now and are clueless about what to do next.
T asked them how they plan to proceed further and they said they were wondering if they should place a second ad this time asking for former employees of this house. Dr. Roy had given them two names of former house maids. Shamta and Ruhi. Maybe they should try contacting them.
T: Hmm... Shamta of Shamta Bakery, Worli. Well this is her address and we are meeting her this Tuesday evening.
Abhay and Pia looked at her in awe but she gave them a smug expression and brushed it off saying it's her high fly contacts which helped her get hold of Shamta and this old gardener. They decided to meet the gardener next and ask him about Maya's childhood.
