Chapter 8
Saturday afternoon came and Abhay and Pia found themselves eagerly waiting in the reception area of Dr. Roy's clinic premised within his residence. Seconds seemed like hours to them and they could hardly contain their excitement when finally their turn to meet Dr. Roy came. Dr. Roy addressed them rather formally without showing much interest or enthusiasm. Rather he seemed to be sceptical talking to them in the first place. He asked rather in an intimidate manner: So what can I do for you?
But Abhay and Pia were too excited to note any discomfort on Dr. Roy's part and blurted out: Actually we want to know about Maya Sharma Rathod. We believe that she was your guardian before her marriage to Major Danish Rathod.
Dr. Roy replied as a matter of factly: Indeed she was. But that was 18 years back. I wonder what brings you here now after so long?
Abhay and Pia had already prepared for that answer and Abhay spoke: well call it a matter of fate or coincidence, but we just happened to come to Mumbai and happened to buy the same house where she used to reside with her husband 18 years back and also it turned out that she was a school friend of my wife's mother and she often used to talk about her. So my wife wanted to meet her once if possible, especially now since her mother is no more.
Dr. Roy:I am afraid to say, I won't be able to help you on that front though. As I have no idea myself where she is now! The last I heard from her was some 18 years back.
Abhay: really, I thought that she must have been in touch with you after Major Rathod's untimely death which left her a widow at such a young age.
Dr. Roy: You don't seem to be knowing much. Maya had actually chosen to leave Major Rathod and settle with some one she loved a few months before Major Rathod's death. In fact, it was this betrayal which broke Major Rathod's heart and led to his demise.
Abhay and Pia both expressed fake shock and said: Really. We never knew of it. But are you sure that she left. I mean how could you be sure that she left and that nothing else happened to her?
Dr. Roy looked at them with a bemused expression which made them feel embarrassed at asking such a stupid question from him, so Pia quickly covered up saying: I mean mom never said such things about her, she always spoke of very nicely about her, so it's a shock for me to hear that she ran away like that. That's why we asked if she indeed left or maybe something else happened, like you know she might have been kidnapped or something. I mean did she leave any note or did she call you up which convinced you that she indeed ran away because that is not how my mom described her.
Dr. Roy took a deep sigh and said: Well, what can I say. Maya was indeed a sweet child, but very irresponsible for her age. I am partly responsible for that as I spoilt her rotten giving into all her demands and what else can you expect from a child who lost her parents when she was just 5 years old. I was 25 at that time and just started my practice. She was very pretty and so as soon as she turned a teenager, she had a line of boys trying to woo her and she used to enjoy that attention. To be honest I was surprised when she married Major Rathod when she was just 18. But when I met him, I could see what must have attracted her. After all he was an army man and women always have some unexplainable fascination for army men. I hoped that the marriage would change her for good, but unfortunately it did not. She must have realized how angry I would be with her and that's why she never called me up but just sent me two letters to let me know that she is alright and happy and I should not bother about her.
Abhay and Pia were surprised to hear about letters and Abhay interrupted him: From here did she send those letters? Why did you not try to find her there and talk to her?
Dr. Roy: She was smart on that. She had arranged for the letters to be couriered from the courier office address itself. None of the courier companies was as vigilant and particular about sender's address at that time as they are now. I did go to those courier offices, one was in Bangalore and other one in Hyderabad, but nobody had any idea about them. When I saw your advertisement, I thought that maybe she is back in Mumbai or has sent some message to me and that's why I responded to your ad. But I guess you also do not have any information on her. Well, then that's how much I can help you on.
Abhay and Pia understood that he wants to dismiss them now so they got up to leave but before leaving asked him: Mr. Roy, could we see those letters?
Dr. Roy replied: Hmm... I do not remember where I kept them, it's been so long. But now, I am curious. Why are you both so curious to find out about some one whom you only heard of and never met. And who has not been heard of since 18 years, when you must have been kids.
Abhay and Pia decided that if they were to seek Dr. Roy's help any further on this matter, then they need to tell him the truth. He seemed to be trust worthy enough. No, they would still not tell anything about her murder, but at least they can tell him the truth about Pia and Maya's relation. So Pia spoke up: Dr. Roy, we are sorry to lie to you. Actually Maya was not my mother's friend, but my mother herself, I mean my step-mother. She was my father Major Danish Rathod's second wife.
It was now Dr. Roy's turn to exclaim in surprise: Oh my God! You are little Piyu. How old you have grown! You were just three when I convinced your father to send you away to your aunts. And now I am seeing you after 18 years with your husband. Wow! What a pleasant surprise it is.
Pia smiled at him and asked: So you knew me at that time? And why did you convince my dad to send me away?
Dr. Roy replied: Indeed I knew you. I used to come every weekend to meet you people as I never had any other family of my own. And I had no choice. Maya's betrayal had left your father so broken that he was becoming delusional and I was afraid he would lose complete sanity soon, and that would not have been in your best interests. And indeed that is what happened. His mental balance kept on declining and ultimately I had to get him admitted to an asylum where he breathed his last within a few months.
Abhay asked: In what way was he getting delusional?
Dr. Roy: He kept saying that he had murdered Maya. I had a hard time convincing him that nothing of sort has happened and that she has left him, but he kept saying that he had murdered her even after I showed him those letters which Maya sent me after leaving and which arrived at a week's interval.
Dr. Roy was called to attend an emergency patient by his nurse just at that moment and he left without giving a second glance to Abhay and Pia who stood their like ghosts turned completely pale.
