~~Chapter 9~~
"Pia."
Pia started and looked around to see her mother peering with concern into her face. They were in the kitchen, washing and replacing the vessels in the stand after dinner.
"Is everything okay? Are you worried about something?"
"No mom, I'm not worried about anything, why did you ask," Pia asked, surprised.
"You've been wiping that plate for 5 minutes now while looking out the window," her mother said dryly.
Embarrassed, Pia quickly kept the plate along with the others and without meeting her mother's eyes, she said, "I'll go and check if all the doors are locked properly."
"No," her mother said firmly. "Go to sleep, you got up early today and haven't had any rest all day. I'll check the doors."
Needing to run away before she gave into the urge to cry, Pia didn't protest and after giving her mother a good-night hug, she went up to her room.
The lightheartedness with which she had run out of Chinten had disappeared within minutes. And she was only left with a terrible weight on her heart. She had hardly eaten a few mouthfuls at dinner, but her mother had assumed it was because of tiredness.
The marks had fallen when Abhay had tightened his clasp in fury at something Sidharth had said. Something really strange?
She sat down on the chair near the table, feeling her head churn with a million thoughts.
The whole of evening, the events that had taken place in Chinten had kept running through her mind, and she felt more confused than ever?.
There had been two men dressed in very costly-looking suits, with an aura of being important people. Both were very frightening, especially Sidharth, even though he hadn't said a word to her. Who were those men, why had they been so threatening towards Abhay? She had a feeling that the three men had known each other for a very long time...
Pia remembered everything that had been said, but she had not understood any part of it. And every time she tried to decipher the meaning, the chaos in her mind and heart only intensified.
And to add to her misery was the memory of what she had done after they had left. For the first time ever, Abhay had spoken in her favour, had defended her and had stopped them from insulting her, and had called her a friend. And in return, she had actually blackmailed him into doing something he had not wanted to. And now he probably hated her even more than before, if that was possible, she thought miserably. Just yesterday evening she had sworn not to do anything to alienate him further and less than 24 hours later, she had managed to do it again? She was the most ungrateful and foolish girl on this planet.
The guilt was eating her alive, but at that moment it had seemed the only way she could get him to tie the thread.?
Her college bag was lying on one corner of the table. Pia pulled it towards her and opened it. She unzipped a small compartment inside and took out a tiny crystal statue of the baby Krishna, and she closed her fingers around it, drawing comfort from it for a few minutes.
Then she opened her palm, and looked at the mischievous God.
"You'll look after him, wont you?" she implored softly.
********************************************"Pia, the lecture is over?wake up now," a voice hissed.
Pia woke up from deep sleep with a start and for a minute wondered where she was. It took her a couple of minutes to realize that she was sitting in her classroom, with Misha and Ruhi on either side of her. The rest of her classmates were either gossiping with their heads together, or strolling around the class, stretching their legs after a long lecture.
"You slept through the whole class," Misha scolded.
"I did??" Pia asked, horror-struck. She had only put her head down for a minute as she had found it difficult to keep her eyes open because she had not had much sleep last night again.
"Yes you did. It's good that we sit at the back of the class," Ruhi said, "Or the professor would have seen you for sure."
"Yes?Thank God," Pia agreed fervently.
"Why are you so sleepy today?" Misha asked, as Pia put her head back on the desk.
"I couldn't sleep properly last night," she answered drowsily.
Why? Pia thought idly. Why hadn't she been able to sleep? And then she remembered what she had been thinking about late into the night and sat up abruptly, while simultaneously tugging the sleeve of her kurta over her left wrist. Her friends looked a little surprised at her sudden wakefulness but did not seem to have seen the marks. Her strategy of wearing a long-sleeved kurta along with a lot more bangles than usual had proved to be a success.
"Did he give lots of notes," Pia asked anxiously.
"Not really," Misha said relaxingly. "Just a couple of pages."
Pia sighed in relief.
"So how is operation friendship coming on," Ruhi grinned.
I am terrible at it, she thought sadly, If I do one thing right, I follow it up with ten acts of stupidity. Aunty should never have trusted me with this?.
But not wanting to worry her friends unnecessarily, she grinned and said, "I think I'm making progress." And then asked, "When is the next class?"
"In another 15 minutes," Ruhi said.
"I need to return a book to the library. I'll come back in 10 minutes," Pia said, rising to her feet.
"Okay, but hurry?.you know Professor Mathews hates those who come in late."
Pia was kneeling down and picking up the books and handing them over to the peon, chatting merrily to the old man, who was grinning toothlessly at something she had said.
"Hi Kabeer," she smiled.
Kabeer felt a wonderful warmth flood his heart at her lovely smile. But the feeling was immediately followed by an acute anguish at just how far he was from making her a part of his life. Why did she have to be so beautiful and cute?
"I'll carry all the books and come with you, Bahadur chacha," Pia, who was still on her knees, said cheerfully and started to lift the stack from the floor.
"I'll pick up the rest, Pia. It will be too heavy for you," Kabeer intervened and quickly picked up rest of the pile. His initial disappointment had vanished and he had seen an opportunity in the setback.
"The books are not very heavy, Kabeer. I can - "
"Ah Kabeer, its good that you are still here..." All three turned to see the IT professor standing at his classroom's entrance a little distance away, with a magazine in his hand. "There is a very interesting magazine article I had kept aside to discuss with you," he called out, "I forgot to show it to you earlier." And he went back into the class.
But Kabeer did not make any attempt to give Pia the books and run into the class where his professor was waiting. He was standing motionless, looking strangely frustrated.
Pia tried to read the title on the topmost book on the pile upside down. The old man saw her reading and said, "The books are for Professor Diwakar Jalaan."
"Professor Jalaan,"Pia said thoughtfully, "Isn't he the in-charge of an engineering department, chacha."
"Yes?he has been here for a very long time," Bahadur chacha said proudly. "Students come here from all over the country to learn under him. And I have heard that he got job offers from all over the world but he chose to remain in this college." As they neared the end of the corridor, his voice dropped to a whisper.
He came to a halt in front of a big door, on which hung a sign with golden lettering that read 'Aerospace Engineering Sciences Department.' This was the most famous and illustrious department of her college.
The old peon turned to Pia and said in a very low voice, "You can give me the books now, bittiya. I just need to keep them inside and ask Jalaan sahib if he needs anything else."
"Ok chacha," Pia whispered back, "but please call me if you need help again."
He gave another toothless smile. "You've already helped me, bittiya. Now just pray for me that Professor Jalaan should not be in a bad mood. He is busy making preparations for a meeting. A student has got admission for Phd after many years in this department and he will be coming tomorrow."😃
***********************************************It was early evening and Pia was sitting on the steps of Prashant, taking pleasure in the pretty view of the trees that were swaying in the gentle breeze, the temple in their midst, and the few people idling away their time sitting in the shade of the leafy branches. She had not been able to do this for a long while now, and was enjoying the stillness in the surroundings.
She heard the sound of a door opening on her left and turned to see Abhay come out of his house, with shoes and socks in one hand... He was Looking Like Angel,The Most Handsome Man in the World ,Pia thought... He sat down on the topmost step, kept the shoes on the step below and started to pull on the socks.
Pia sat undecided for a minute, wondering if this would be a good time to apologise to him for what she had done yesterday. Then she stood up and walked timidly over to the gate.
"Hi Abhay," she said in a small voice.
Abhay, who was tying the shoes now, didn't answer.
"Are you going somewhere?" Pia asked with an uncertain smile, attempting to prolong the conversation while she mustered the courage and tried to decide what she would say to apologise.
"Yes?we are going house hunting," Abhay retorted, without looking at her.
House hunting? Pia felt confused. "But why are you -"
And then an awful realization dawned.
"Are you going to shift from here?" she asked, aghast.
"Yes," he answered. He rose to his feet, climbed down the steps and stood facing her.
"But why?" she asked distraughtly.
"Obviously, because of you," Abhay said with raised eyebrows.
"Because?because of me?" Pia asked in an anguished whisper, feeling horrified and upset beyond belief. Because of her?.they were going away because of her? she had harassed him so much with her foolish resolve to become friends, that he had decided to move away?
"I am really sorry if I have troubled you, Abhay. It won't happen again," she said earnestly.
"It's too late to apologise," he said, unmoved. I've made up my mind."
"Please Abhay, I won't come in your way again?.." she pleaded, feeling perilously close to tears again for the third time in less than a week. "But please don't move to another house?"
"Move from here?" an astounded voice asked, and Shaurya Singh came into the courtyard.
"Who told you that, Pia?" he asked, very concerned at her disconsolate expression.
"Abhay said you both were going out to look for another house."
Shaurya Singh turned to his nephew. "Why would you tell her such a thing, Abhay?" he asked disapprovingly.
Abhay looked back at him without a trace of remorse and shrugged dispassionately. "If you had given me two minutes more, Baba, I could have made her promise not to step into our house again".😆
"Abhay?" Shaurya Singh shook his head in despair, and then smiled sympathetically at Pia. "We were only going out for a stroll, Pia. I haven't been out for a walk since we came here. I really enjoy walking at this time of the evening, and Abhay was accompanying me"
Pia felt almost light-headed with relief. They were only going out for a walk?and she had been just a minute away from bursting into tears thinking that they were moving out of Chinten because of her.
Feeling extremely hurt, Pia turned to Abhay. "You?.you are a very mean person, you know," she said indignantly, "I had only come to say sorry for making you tie that thread -"
"We've wasted enough time now, Baba, let's go," Abhay interrupted angrily, glowering at her. And Pia wondered why she was feeling like she had said something she shouldn't have.
Shaurya Singh didn't answer for a moment; he was looking at Pia with something close to shock. Then he somehow pulled himself together and mumbled, "My watch?I left it in my room?I'll go and get it."
"No, Baba, you wait here. I'll get it for you."
Abhay had just left to bring the watch, when Pia's grandfather called her from inside Prashant. He must have misplaced his book again, Pia thought and smiled to herself.
"Enjoy your walk, uncle" she told Shaurya Singh cheerily, "I hope you'll like our town."
"I already love your town, Pia," he smiled warmly.
Pia grinned happily and then went inside Prashant, giving him a final wave at the door.
"And its people too," Shaurya Singh added softly, once she had gone.
So it was Pia who had made Abhay tie the thread. Something that he had not been able to do for years, she had succeeded in doing within a week. He had been very touched and happy when she had confided in him the contents of Mrs Dobriyal's letter. But he had been a silent and helpless spectator to far too many terrible events, and so he had been too afraid to hope. And his old heart had become too weary and disillusioned to expect a miracle.
Now, however, he was feeling as though he had been standing at the edge of the horizon all this while. And after a night that had seemed never-ending, the sky was finally lightening, as at the break of a new dawn?.
************************************************"Rishi, come out of the bathroom."
Pia was standing outside the bathroom door, hands on her hips. Her brother, who never took baths in the evening and usually took less than 60 seconds to bathe, had announced his decision to take a shower at 6 in the evening and had been inside the bathroom on the first storey of their house for more than an hour.
"Can't a man take a bath in peace in this house?" he yelled from inside.
"A man could?if he didn't have a math test tomorrow and he hadn't studied a thing?" she said, rolling her eyes. If there was anything in this universe that Rishi hated more than having his cheeks pulled, it was mathematics.
"That's not true," he shouted from inside. "I know everything already, so I don't need to study."
"Really?" Then you can continue with your bath," Pia responded cheerily, "and when you come out I'll give you a test to solve. Won't that be fun?"
There was a brief silence, then the door opened by an inch and two black eyes peeked at her.
"Okay, I'll come out now," Rishi said crossly, "but close your eyes."
Pia closed her eyes with one palm and stood to a side, as Rishi came out of the bathroom enveloped completely in a huge white towel. After ensuring that she wasn't peeking through her fingers, he scampered into his room and shut the door to get dressed. Pia removed her hand from her eyes, grinning at her brother's efforts to protect a man's dignity.
"I'll study in my room," he declared from inside.
"No, you wont," Pia corrected him. "You'll study downstairs, where we all can see what you are doing."
"Don't you trust me to study on my own, Di," he demanded, sounding very insulted.
"No?I don't," she confirmed.
He opened the door a few moments later with some books and a pencil in his hands and a very morose expression, apparently contemplating the hours of maths ahead of him.
"I'm going down to study?.are you happy now," he asked snappily.
Pia smiled, walked over to him and bend down in a conspiratorial manner. "If you score well in the test," she whispered, "I'll convince mom to get the TV repaired." The TV had been out of order for a month now, and their mother had refused to get it repaired because she felt Rishi had been spending a lot of time in front of it.
Rishi's face lit up. "You will!" he asked gleefully. When she nodded, he declared, "Then I'm going to top the class this time, Di?just wait and watch."
Pia laughed and straightened, and pat his head playfully ?only to find that it was soaking wet.
"You haven't dried your hair properly, Rishi," she admonished. "You'll get a cold."
And still scolding, she prodded him to her room, hurried to the cupboard and took out a fresh towel. Rishi obediently came and stood with his back to her, and Pia started to towel his head dry.
"Di?"
"Hmmm?"
"Are you wearing more bangles than usual?"
Pia stopped, surprised. The marks had faded since morning, but to be on the safe side, she was still wearing the bangles to keep her wrists covered.
"How did you know?"
"They didn't make so much noise when you were drying my hair two days ago."
Pia smiled. "I just felt like wearing more bangles today. I'll be taking some off by tomorrow."
"No, Di. Don't remove them?I like how noisy they are?and why have you removed your anklets. You should wear them, I like that sound too," he said, nodding vigorously.
Then still chuckling, she walked over to the table and pulled open a drawer. A pair of anklets were inside. Rishi must have had his devious reasons for wanting her to wear them, she thought with a grin, but she also had missed the anklets.
Pia took them out, sat down on the chair and started to fasten them on. She was just tightening the hooks when she heard a familiar voice downstairs.
When she entered the living room, it was to find Shaurya Singh chatting comfortably with her grandfather. Rishi was sitting at the table in a corner with his books, pretending to study, but in reality eavesdropping on their conversation.
When she walked over to them, both the men looked up at her and returned her smile. She sat next to her grandfather.
"Pia, did you know, Abhay is joining your college tomorrow," Her grandfather said happily.
"He is?" Pia asked delightedly and Shaurya Singh nodded with a smile. "Which course is he joining?"
"He'll be joining as a Phd student in aerospace engineering," Shaurya Singh said proudly.
"Phd student?" Grandpa asked, looking bewildered. "But isn't he just 19 years old? He should be in second year, shouldn't he?"
Pia remembered the conversation she had had with Bahadur chacha earlier that day. So that student was Abhay? But she was as confused as her grandfather?
"Prithvi is 19," Shaurya Singh confirmed "but he is not an ordinary student - his IQ is remarkably high. In school, he was given double promotions every year. He completed with his schooling and junior college in 7 years, instead of 12."
"He was accepted by the topmost universities in the world for his graduation in engineering, but he chose to join India's best college," he gushed, exhibiting clear joy in his nephew's considerable achievements. "And then for his masters he decided to go abroad. He finished at the top of his class there and won a gold medal. They wanted him to join for their Phd course, but he chose to come back."
Pia and her grandfather exchanged impressed smiles, and she now recollected something.
"Grandpa, Dobriyal uncle had told us something about this when he had come to visit, remember?"
"Hmm?yes?I think I recall Raghav saying something like that," Grandpa said slowly.
"He got admission to the best institutions in this country, but I wanted him to come -" Shaurya Singh stopped abruptly. "I?I mean we both decided that Mount College would be the finest option?" he concluded hurriedly.
"What time will he be coming to college tomorrow, uncle?"
"His meeting with the guide is at 10:30."
Grandpa was looking somewhat lost and was sitting quietly, as though still trying to digest everything he had heard.
Pia started to say that she would try to meet him, but then she remembered the unkind trick he had played just a couple of hours ago, and didn't say anything. How easily and callously Abhay had almost reduced her to tears by saying that they were going to look for another house?she recalled with indignation. She was not going to ask anything more about him. Well?maybe just one more question?not that she was very concerned?of course not?
"How will he reach there, uncle?" she asked hesitantly. "There are a few buses that stop at the main road. Then he'll have to walk a little to reach the campus," she added contemplatively.
"His bike will be coming in a few days?until then I think he is going to walk all the way to the institute."
"Walk all the way to college?" Pia asked in amazement, forgetting her resolve to only ask one more question. "It will take him an hour at the least!"
"He enjoys walking," Shaurya Singh smiled, and then turned a little serious.
"And an hour on foot is nothing for him?nothing..." he added in a very low tone, almost to himself.
********************************************
Pia was halfway through when she heard someone call out to her from the left. She turned around to see Aryan waving to her energetically from a table somewhere in the middle of the arena. She grinned and made her way towards him.
"Where were you for the past few days, Einstein?" she queried, sitting down opposite to him.
"Classes, classes and more classes," he said resignedly. "I don't know why I chose engineering. I should have taken up English literature like you, Ruhi and Misha. Then I could have passed the exams with my eyes closed."
"Hey?Literature is also very tough," she protested and then laughed when she realized that he had been pulling her leg.
"But I can see what you were doing, Pia."
"What?" Pia asked quizzically.
"You were busy robbing a bangle shop."
Pia giggled.
And then she noticed it.
There was a small bruise on his cheek. Piai's heart sank at the sight - this was not the first time Aryan had come to college with bruising on his face and hands.
"How did you get that injury," she asked anxiously.
"What injury?oh this one?its nothing," he replied airily. "I had just woken up and wasn't wearing my glasses and banged into the bathroom door."
"Don't lie to me, Aryan," she said sternly. "Did those senior boys do this to you?"
She knew Aryan had been a victim of merciless ragging and bullying from the day he had joined college, partly due to his timid personality and looks and partly because of his family problems.
"I'm not lying, Pia. They haven't troubled me for a long time now."
"Thank God," Pia said fervently. "But if they try to rag you again, you should complain to the authorities. Stand up to them and don't take the harassment quietly. I know you can do it, Aryan?.I have full faith in you?" she added earnestly.
"Thanks, Pia?that means a lot to me?" Aryan said quietly, not meeting her eyes. He felt shame welling up within him. He had lied to her. The persecution had not stopped at all. The bruise on his face was the result of a beating he had received in the hostel a couple of days ago.
He was very fond of Ruhi and Misha. But Pia was the closest friend he had ever had, and the sister he had never had?
