As she was relaxing into her sunny afternoon, relaxed and happy, two things happened, firstly there was an aggressive knock at the door, and secondly a sharp pain lanced through her pelvis.
Taking a deep breath pia made her way rather gingerly downstairs.
"Ok, ok, ok!" she muttered at the incessant banging. As she reached the door she pulled it open, then looked up to see abhay stood there, just as another wave of pain shot through her.
The "Argh" sound she made was demonic even to her own ears and abhay on seeing her panicked.
"Shit pia. What the hell is wrong?"
She shrugged, "I don't know. What do you want?"
"You need to be in hospital. You look dreadful..." his concern seemed genuine, but she was still rankled by his appearance out of the blue.
"I'll go once you've left. Now, what do you want?"
He shook his head, "like I'm going to leave you like this. We might not be best mates anymore, but I can't see you like this."
Pulling out his phone he called her father, " mr dobrial?...Yeah it's me. I'm with pia, she's not well...I'm taking her to the hospital. Can you get here to look after armaan?" Nodding, he hung up. "He's on his way."
She nodded, "He can take me, it's ok. You can go. What did you want anyway? You banged the door as if you wanted to kill me."
He shook his head, "another time. And I am taking you to the hospital; your father drives like an old man."
As she collapsed in pain again, he frowned, "are you in labor?"
She shook her head, "it doesn't feel like it...the pain is too high, it's hard to breathe..."
Taking her he pushed her to his large four wheel drive and eased her into the front seat, then headed back into the apartment. He emerged minutes later with a bag, and as he saw her father drive in to the parking lot, he tossed the apartment keys to him.
"armaan is in bed, I'll call you."
Her father blew a kiss as the car sped out into the road in a cloud of dust, a look of fear on his face.
She was silent all the way to the hospital, the pain was still breathtaking, literally and physically, and it was so frequent that she was struggling to breathe, let alone talk. So she kept her head down and absorbed the pain, hoping that it would all pass over her.
abhay's knuckles were white as he gripped the steering wheel. He'd never seen pia look so ill, and whilst he still had this huge chunk of anger towards her, he couldn't see her like this. She was green, her hair damp with perspiration...suddenly he was scared.
By the time they got to the hospital, pia was barely responding, she was taken at a run to the assessment unit. She was bleeding heavily, panting in pain, and as white as a sheet, the doctors had to decide there and then whether to deliver the baby, rather than wait for any test results.
"Isn't it too early? What'll happen to the baby?"
The doctor placed a hand in his arm, "it's not looking like your wife is going to survive if we don't deliver the baby soon. And she's thirty-three weeks, that's a good gestation. We need to act quickly."
abhay was shaking his head suddenly it all clicked into place, he'd only been discussing with the band a few days earlier that it was seven months since they'd come home from Australia, the debate had been was seven months thirty or twenty eight weeks and the whole concept of a lunar month...anyway...this baby was his after all. The revelation didn't hit him as hard as he thought it would, he'd known all the while, if he looked introspectively, he'd always known she'd not cheated, that she wouldn't dive so quickly into a relationship with kabir or anyone else, he'd made things so difficult for her, hurt her and treated her like crap.
"Is she going to be ok?" he was trying not to panic.
The doctor shrugged, "she's got what we think is preeclampsia, it may be more severe than that, she's not well, there's a chance her liver, her kidneys could stop working. The sooner we remove the baby, the sooner they both have a chance to live. I'm sorry to put this to you like this, but as she's not really answering questions, you need to sign the consent forms as next of kin. You need to ok this operation."
In a daze he signed the papers, and then called mr dobrial, pia's father, telling him to come, as soon as he could. He was in the car before the end of the call, madhu stayed with armaan.
She was taken to theater, and abhay didn't remember crying so much in his life as he did locked in a bathroom on the ward. When he finally emerged, mr dobrial was pacing nervously chewing his nails.
abhay looked at him and sighed, "I am so sorry, I bet you hate me!"
mr dobrial shrugged, "as I look at you now, I know you're hurting more than I could ever wish for. Now is not the time for recriminations, hey?"
The two men alternatively paced and sat, no needing any words as the minutes ticked by so very slowly.
"It's a girl!" a young male doctor still in theater scrubs that were extensively bloodstained burst into the room.
"And pia?" her father asked.
"She's stable; the doctors are with her, if she remains stable, she'll be back here in a little while."
"And the baby?" abhay asked with a gulp.
The doctor smiled, "a very healthy little girl, all things considered, four pounds seven. She was crying as they took her up to NICU, they'll need to assess her, observe her, but she started well. Congratulations."
abhay nodded, trying to hide his tears, then he turned to annab and the two men hugged, sharing that moment of desperation.
"Can I see her?" he eventually asked.
"Head on up there, the nurses will direct you." The man smiled, before lowering his theater mask and leaving the room.
pia tried to open her eyes, she could hear voices, but her eyes were just refusing to part, she couldn't recognize the voices. Two women...nurses? They were talking about drips...and bleeding. And baby!
Oh my God she thought as she tried to wriggle, all she wanted was to sit up, she couldn't think where she was, what was happening. Then she remembered pain...abhay...hospital.
"No!" she shouted fighting to sit up.
A nurse rushed to her side, "Hi pia, I'm Sara; I'm the nurse looking after you. You're ok. You had us all worried for a bit, but you're ok now."
pia turned to look at the pretty blonde, "baby?" she asked with a rasp.
"You had a beautiful little girl! Four pounds seven. She's on SCBU but they're happy with her." She disappeared out of pia's vision, and then returned with a picture, "Here she is, they snapped a photo for you."
As pia saw the dark hair, the large blue eyes of her delicate daughter, she was overwhelmed with tears. The nurse sat with her for a few minutes, before explaining 'Dad' and 'Grandad' were there.
The rest of the night was a blur. But at six am, she finally got out of bed, managed a bathroom trip, and then was taken in a wheelchair by a nurse to visit her daughter. After a brief explanation of all that paraphernalia surrounding the baby's incubator, the nurse looking after her daughter smiled, "do you want a hold?"
The tears poured unrestrained as she held the tiny bundle. The nurses reported they were happy with her progress, but there was no mention of home yet.
"Hey darling!" pia was sat in an armchair beside her bed when armaan ran across the room to see her. Pulling him close and kissing his hair repeatedly, she could barely let him climb down. Then looking up she saw a rather shamefaced abhay stood there looking at her.
"I'm sorry pia. I never gave you a chance..."
pia laughed, "even if I had the energy to respond to that comment I don't know if I would, or if I could."
He nodded, the only response he could give.
With armaan there they were able to converse around him, lightening the tension, then her father and mom arrived, shortly followed by abhay's parents. She could barely look at those two, as like their son they had been so quick to judge her. They made an apology immediately, and she realized she had to be civil, after all she'd not actually told them the truth either.
Knowing that her father was predominantly looking after armaan, she managed to spend most of the next two days feeding and getting to know her daughter. She had decided to call her anjali (anjali use u r name).
She told abhay when he came the following day, "I really like it."
She nodded, "I'm glad you do."
"Can we talk pia? I'm due away again in a few days, we've got a festival in Japan and some concerts in Asia. "
pia leaned back in her chair and laughed dryly, "Wow this is a familiar conversation hey?" She linked her fingers together over her slowly reducing in size belly and stared at him. "You are the father of my two children abhay, but you are also the bas***d that has put me through more hell in the last eight months than any person I have ever known. You seem to think that I'm going to be nice to you now, purely because you realize you were wrong?"
He shrugged, "I've said sorry."
"Sorry?" she asked the tone of her voice incredulous, but the volume was unchanged. He was amazed at how calm she was. "Do you think that that one word makes up for the hell I've been through? The embarrassment, the sadness...you wouldn't take my calls, you have deliberately planned to make my life as bad as you could. You've ruined any respect I had for you abhay. I loved you, I still love you, you're the father of my children, but I'm not in love with you anymore. I don't want us to fight, it's not healthy, but PLEASE don't pretend that the last few months haven't happened. Because they have."
She reached in her bag and pulled out a wad of photos of anjali, "here are some pictures to remind you of her whilst you're in Asia, phone, Skype...do what you need, but please don't ask for anything more than that. Ok?"
"pia?" abhay's face was awash with devastation, but she didn't back down.
"You didn't want ME abhay," she almost sobbed, "but now you want US? I am more than a mother, and I deserve more than second best. I deserve more than you."
She ignored the tears welling in his eyes, ignored the pain in her own chest, and watched as he slowly; head hung left the room, and her life. This time her instigation, her choice, yet STILL her heartbreak.
