I think it has to do with both Abhay sitting in her subconscious mind and his connection with Piya. She can still see, feel and hear him.

Piya can still feel and hear Abhay's Voice , Connection of Heart which always Calls Piya from any state . And Abhays mind still consecutively brood Over Piya .

i guess its both... Abhay's still connected with Piya no matter where she is or she remembers him ya forgot him or how long its been he last saw her... and that subconsciously Piya loves him and feels him always there to help her in danger. Abhay tried to sweep-out everything about himself from Piya mind but there are things that even he can't do like making Piya completely forget Abhay or throw him out of her life... they are connected for eternity! ❤️
