There's no No. 1 on TV

It's competition at its highest! TV serials are fighting for the top slot. But in the current scenario, no serial is able to hold on to the position for more than a week or two, reveal Television Rating Point (TRP) charts.

A few years ago one TV show could rule for months together. Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi held the top slot for a very long time. A year-and-a-halfago, Bidaai too held the number one position for a year after which Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai took over for a good seven months.

But, right now, there are four to five shows that are battling neck-to-neck ' Pavitra Rishta, Uttaran, Na Aana Iss Des Mein Laado, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai and Balika Vadhu. Recently, when there was a high point in Na Aana..., the show topped the charts with a rating of 7.1. But now it's Pavitra Rishta that's holding that position. A few weeks ago, when Uttaran had some major twists, it beat the field else with a TRP of eight points. Which means production houses and channels are leaving no stone unturned in dishing out dramatic twists and turns to keep viewers' interests alive.

"It is a very positive trend,' says producer Rupali Guha of Uttaran. "It's good for the audiences. It's also healthy competition among the producers. Each one is putting in hard work, trying to excel and make it to the number one slot." Creative head of a popular channel Sukesh Motwani terms this an exciting period for Indian television.

"TV viewing is obviously becoming more democratic as is the case in the US. Viewers are becoming choosy and finicky; there's no absolute loyalty to one show," he points out. "There are five to six shows that they love and whenever there's an interesting twist in a particular show, they shift to it for a while. It's like the viewer is saying that whenever there's great masala, entertainment or high level drama I'll watch you, but I'm not sticking to you forever!"

Producer-director Rajan Shahi (Bidaai and Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai) agrees that the competition is getting fiercer by the day. "There's a lot of demand and hence pressure to have instant results and attain instant high TRPs. So every show is working towards achieving dramatic high points." Talking about the current scenario which does affect creativity Shahi adds, "Nowadays almost all stories are presented dramatically; the pattern of story narration has changed. What could have been over two years or more is being crushed and formatted only for six months. This may attract the audience for a while, but it will surely affect the shows in the long run."

i wonder how this shows comes to NO 1....
there is nothing in all that so called shows rather than one word from me BORING......
i can't digest all this saas-bahu sagas....although i like Manav-Archana for various reasons but still i don't like the show.....
even i like Alekh-Sadhna well i don't really watch the show but i change channel and just watch for few mins....i don't like the show
i used to watch YRKKH and like Naitik-Akshara but still i don't like the show that i stop watching completely.....
all the top 10 shows are only kraps and giving wrong message.....
it only show how to do a attyachar on bahu....not minding own business...cry...cry and cry all the way.....how to torture adopted daughters(choti bahu).....
if only one show worth watching and meaningful is Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo....thats the only show nice to watch......
the rest top 10 is torturous....even Yahan Mein Ghar Ghar Kheli the only scenes is watchable when there is Karan-Abha being together otherwise its boring.....
i don't know about Uttran...Bandini...Na Aana Desh Laddo from other channels because i don't have the channel but still i guess its the same kitchen politics...torture with difference
and all the youth shows are being sidelined.....its not being fair at all....
i know aunties love to watch such shows but then the youth can't click with it especially me...i better watch Animal Planet rather than watching Sony...Star Plus...Zee Tv....at least Animal Planet is a permanent and there is no Trps race in it....

This TRP race is too much, it is ruining shows because the creatives have to focus on gaining TRP's instead of the storyline they had planned, I mean they change storylines so quickly because the channel needs TRP's its a pain!

This shows have family politics mostly, I watch Bidaai for Saleek and it is rarely as well, I mean its all Saas Bahu, I swear TV needs a change now!

As for PKB I don't know where it stands but it needs the right marketing which Sony is failing to do, I mean when I was in India the whole Yash Raj Launch had loads of advertising but nothing on its weekly soaps!

yup the Trps are ruining the shows.....even a good planned track gets changed and they shows us krap which we are not intrested to watch.....i might as well watch English shows....
i don't watch Bidaai...Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai....Pavitra Rishta(have watched it in tamil its the same copy...but tamil one is a masterpiece can't be compared to hindi version).....the other shows i have no channel but its the same krap.....seriously we are in 2010 for god sake a whole computer world we don't want to live life in 18th century with goonghat on....attyachar on bahu and they just keep quiet...torturing adopted children....vamps and villains and kraps...kitchen politics....i can't even sit for a minute to watch it....
shows like PKB...KMH....KYPH...KDMHMD...and i guess the some other channel shows like MJHT...LNBDJ...DMG are refreshing to the eyes.....
sometimes i wish PKB was aired in zee tv....it would have gone into the trps chart....PraSha is a popular couple.....it would have done wonders and also Zee knows how to promote and gain publicity for their shows....
