On 16th June 1606, Guru Arjan Dev Ji was martyred. Ever since that day, every year the Sikhs have been commemorating Guru Arjan Dev Ji's Martydom day. Sikhs had nothing to do with weapons or violence before the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji as they were taught only to worship one God, maintain peace, harmony and do hardwork and spread love.

People in India consisting of both the Hindus and Muslims started to follow and convert into Sikhism during the leadership of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. The growing of followers and popularity of Sikhism agitated the Mughal Clergy. When the Akbar, Emperor of India, did not do any thing to stop the conversion, that angered the Mughal Clergy more. Emperor Jahangir who took over the reign after the death of Akbar, was influenced to turn the whole of Hindustan into Islamic State. When the powerful Hindus, associated with the Muslim court, observed their power disappearing due to the infleunce and popularity of Guru Arjan Dev, they joined hands with the Muslim Ulema in order to make Jahangir take action against Guru Ji and arrest him.

The Mughal Clergy used the enemies of Guru Arjan Dev and threw allegations at him which were untrue and wrong. Guru ji was charged for helping and aiding son of Jahangir,
Khusro, against him. Another charge which was framed against him was that contents in the Sikh Granth defamed the Hindus and the Muslims.

Guru Arjan ji was brought to Lahore in May 1606, where he was kept as prisoner. He had to got to torture for six days including one day of the arrest.

Day 1 of Torture

Guru Ji was starved, he was not allowed to eat or drink anything. He was also forbade from sleeping.

Day 2 of Torture

Next day he was made sit on a red-hot caldron which was filled with water and fire was lit underneath the vessel. Guruji showed no signs of pain and stayed calm despite the torture he was going through. Instead he absorbed himself in the remembrance of God.

Day 3 of Torture

On the third day, he was made to sit in boiling water and hot sad was pourned on him which boiled flesh in his legs and burned his body due to the hot sand. Still Guruji did not show any sign of suffering and kept himself abosred in remembering the God and chanted

Tera Kee-aa meethaa lagai

O Waheguru! Your actions seem so sweet to me

Har naam padarath naanak maangi

Nanak begs for the treasure of the Naam, the name of the Lord

Day 4 of Torture

Continuing the torture on the fourth day, Guruji was made to sit in a heated iron plate while hot sand was poured on his body, yet he did not show the pains he was going through and stayed calm

Day 5 of Torture

On this the people planned to suffocate him in a cow hide, but Guruji asked to take bath in the river Ravi. They thought water will make him cause more pain due the blisters all over his body. There was huge crowd watching him taking dip in the water. However he asked his disciplines to help him. He told them

"Such is the Will of my God, submit to the Divine Will, move not, stand calm against all woes."

Guruji's body was no where to be found after he took the dip in the river.

"Hail to the Master. Thou art Wonderful- Martyr, the greatest. Thou art the greatest!"

The seed of martyrdom which was sowed by Guru Arjan Dev ji, became the heritage of the Sikhs.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji was the first person to seeks martyrdom. He is still remembered and honored for everything he has done which are as blessings on the life of the Sikhs.
