Chapter 4
Aarti got out of her car at the orphanage. It seemed the orphanage had been given a fresh coat of paint. Odd that Shoba-ma did not tell her that she was planning on painting. But she didn't have time to think on it too much as the next minute she was swamped by hordes of little girls shouting:
"Aarti-di"
She laughed and hugged them. This was truly her special place. No matter how she felt, these girls made her happy. So most of her weekends she spent here and as much as she could in the week, especially if one the girls needed some tutoring for a test. She loved playing with them and tutoring the older ones. Even giving advice to the teenagers about boys. This was a girl's hostel there were no male workers allowed. Shoba-ma started as one of the workers there and she was now in charge of the place. The girls flourished under her love and care.
Aarti went inside and more girls ran to her and hugged her. But there was one missing. Her favourite. 3 year old Palak. She was a new born left at the door of the orphanage just after Aarti got back. They needed each other, Aarti as she lost her love and Palak as she just had no one. There was an immediate report between them. She took her home for weekends and she bought her clothes and when she was the orphanage, Palak was never far from her. So it was strange that she was nowhere around now.
"Hello Adi-ma" she heard behind her.
She spun around excited to see her angel. And she nearly fell over when she saw where Palak was.
"Yash"
He flashed the most gorgeous smile at her with Palak in his arms.
"Hello sweetheart." he said.
"Adi-ma" Palak held her arms out.
Aarti took her and kissed her but her attention was elsewhere.
"What are you doing here?"
"Waiting for you?"
"Waiting for me?'
"Yes, we want to have breakfast, don't we Palak?"
"Yes."
"Ok, my poppet, let's go eat."
They went to the dining hall and she greeted Shoba-ma and hugged her. There were other people there too. It took her a while but she recognised them from his photos at the apartment. She looked at him stunned.
"Aarti let me introduce you to my family."
"Ma, Bauji, this is Aarti, my future wife." She was floored by his words and instead of greeting them and taking their blessing she walked out.
"Aarti" Shoba-ma called.
"No, Shoba-ma. I will go." He ran after her and got her outside. He held onto her arm.
"Aarti, wait."
"Leave me Yash."
"Why are you leaving?"
"How dare you bring your family here like this without even telling me and then introducing me as your future wife? This is not funny Yash."
"It was not intended to be. It is just fact."
"Look at me Yash. Look how I am dressed." She was wearing a spaghetti strap top and shorts. What must they think of me?
"How do you normally dress when you come here?"
"What does that have to do with anything?'
"Everything. I wanted my family to meet you. The girl that I fell in love with more than 3 years ago and am still madly in love with. The real Aarti Dubey. I want them to know you and accept you for who you are."
"The maid?!"
"No Aarti. The woman that came from this place and is now a senior manager at a prominent IT Company. The woman that has not lost her positive outlook on life despite so many setbacks. A woman with spunk and grit and determination to succeed and loves so unconditionally. The woman that changed me. I couldn't be swayed from my vision have the reputation of being a great business man. My focus was solely on expanding the company. Until I walked in my apartment one day and saw you. From that first day, I could not get you out of my mind. I had to keep you with me. I loved you."
"That's not what you told me when I confessed my love for you."
"I was scared, insecure. And I projected that onto you. I am sorry Baby. I love you."
She looked at him, she didn't say anything.
"I'm sorry I sprang all of this on you today. But please come back inside."
She still just looked at him.
"Please, honey."
"Ok, but no more talk of me being your future wife."
"It's just fact"
She turned around to go to her car.
"Fine, no more talk about marriage. For now."
"Ok."
She went back inside.
She greeted them, took their blessings and said.
"Please accept my apologies for my behaviour. I was just caught off guard."
He introduced her to his brothers and sister in law.
"It appears love has made my brother in law stupid. Please don't be mad at him" said his sister in law.
Aarti smiled.
They ate together. Palak moved from Aarti to Yash whilst eating. And then they went to play outside. His parents left soon after breakfast, she could not quite make out what they thought of her. His brothers and Bhabhi stayed till lunch time.
The two of them stayed and helped out some girls with tutoring and they left just before supper time.
They left in her car as he came with his family. They went out for a bite to eat and went back to her apartment. They sat on the couch in the lounge
"Still angry?'
"I wasn't angry."
"No? You sure had me fooled."
"Yash, I was just surprised that's all and then they were all dressed in saris and heads covered and l was dressed like this. It only made me realise how different your life and mine really is. Your mother's necklace could feed the orphanage for a month. The very place that I grew up in, where I only wore second hand clothes. Where we only ever had the very basic to survive. How will they accept me? They chose Arpi for you. She is from a rich family. And you broke the engagement for me. How can you expect them to accept me as your wife"
"I do expect it. I love you and I want to marry you. They have to accept you or they will lose me."
"Yash no. You will not choose me over your family. Do you want me to feel even worse than I do now?"
"All I know is that I am not giving you up again. Not for anybody."
"Can we not talk about this anymore? I am tired."
"Ok. I can think of something better to do" he said grabbing her around the waist."
"Yash!" she screamed.
He kissed her around her neck and spots where it tickles. She screamed with laughter.
"Stop it please." she squealed.
"Ok, I will stop. If you agree to come to our house for Sunday lunch tomorrow. It's a big thing at our house."
"No."
"Please" he said and nuzzled her in the neck again.
"Stop."
"Please. You will be prepared. You can dress as traditional as you want. Neck, back, arms covered. You can come in Pardah if you want. Please just come. They need to get to know your and you them. Please baby."
"Fine. I will come. Can I bring something?"
"Just your sparkling personality" he smiled."
"Fine, now you have to go home."
"No" he said holding her tighter.
"Yes,"
"Why"
"You know why and I haven't agreed to marry you. So none of that." she said now already highly aroused as he kept kissing her in the neck, now no longer playful.
"Really?" he said his voice hoarse with desire now.
"Yes, now let me go." she said not really wanting him to.
"I don't want to. But I will, because I love you." he said finally releasing her.
"I Lo ...Good night, Yash.
He smiled knowing what she wanted to say.
"Good night to you too, my love." and he left.
Her bed was full of clothes. She didn't know what to wear. For the first time in her life she had so many clothes and today nothing seemed right. She eventually decided to go traditional, but not saree. She wore a simple anarkali suit, white with silver sequence at the chest. And the dupatta was silver with a flat silver sandal.
"So how do I look?" she asked as she opened the door.
"Gorgeous, as always."
"Are you sure this is fine?" she asked insecurely.
"I could always show you what I think." he said as embraced her.
"No, Yash, you'll ruin my make up."
"Just one kiss" he said as his mouth came down on hers making them both breathless.
"Now let's go."
"Relax Aarti, you've already met them and know that they don't bite" he said as he stopped in front of their house.
It wasn't bad. She liked his siblings and Bhabhi. And she loved Pankaj and Vidhi's children. Vendant was 4 and Vedhika 6. She enjoyed playing with them and they apparently loved her too. But still she couldn't fathom how his parents felt about her.
"Don't worry so much. They are pretty old school. But if they did not approve you would know. They know how much he loves you. In fact I have never seen him like this. For the first time in so long I have seen him happy."
"I haven't agreed to marry him."
"But you love him."
"I do."
"Then what's stopping you."
"All this." She indicated at the house.
"Don't look at the house. Look at us. His family. In spite of all of this, we are close and happy. And you have already been accepted by us. Again, don't worry about Ma and bauji. They won't object to the marriage."
"But they are not happy."
"They will come around."
She looked at him playing horsey with Vendant. He smiled and winked at her. Her heart melted. And she made her decision.
He took her to his room. It was very masculine. And there was a photo of her on his pedestal.
"Mmm" She said as she looked around the room.
"What" he said embracing her from the back?
"This room. I don't like it. There will have to be lots of changes here when I move in. I won't live in a man cave.
"Of course you can make any changes you want, I don't mind. Wait ... what? When you move in. Does that mean what I think it means. Baby?" He said turning her around in his arms. "Have you decided to accept my proposal?"
"Yes." she said
He lifted her and howled.
"Shhh" she said attempting to quieten him with her hand.
He twirled her around.
"I love you. I am so happy." he said.
"I love you too, now put me down."
"Let's go tell everyone." he said.
"No, let's just wait for a while and let it sink in."
"Ok."
They went to sit on his balcony on the swing, with her in his embrace. Both immensely happy. They just stared at each other and kissed and just enjoyed the freedom of being in love and being loved.
Too soon she had to go home. He made the announcement just before she left.
Still his parents showed little emotion. She drove herself home as her car was still with him. As soon as she got home she made a call.
"Arpi, you can keep Amaan."
There was a joyous squeal on the other side. She had to keep the phone away from her ear and she chuckled.
"When did this happen."
"I accepted his proposal this afternoon."
"Congratulations Aaru. So the engagement is in 2 weeks. We have already done most of my shopping but we have to get your things. Oh, sweetie, this so exiting. Wait I have to tell Amaan. Love you. See you soon."
"Bye" she still laughed as she put the phone down.
The she phoned Shoba-ma who was as happy for her as she was herself.
She would have to resign from her job as Yash was leaving Bhopal again to open another resort. His dream of going international had materialised and they had bought over a beach resort in Miami and he had to go and oversee the transition to an SE resort.
Her in laws were planning the engagement and wedding together with Arpi and Amaan's family. The three families were very affluent. So the function would be huge and they had to find a suitable venue that accommodates all the guests. They decided to have the wedding at the Mumbai resort as it was the biggest that they had.
The engagement was done in Bhopal at one of their hotels and they utilised the garden with a big marquee.
The rituals were over and the reception had started. There were so many people. Besides Shoba-Ma, Mansi, a few of her colleagues and the immediate family members, Aarti knew very few of the guests. She felt a bit out of sorts but Arpi. Amaan and Yash took her under her wing.
They were talking to some acquaintances of Yash when she heard a vaguely familiar voice.
"Oh my word. I knew you looked familiar."
Aarti looked up and immediately recognised Ishita.
"Hello Ishita" said Yash immediately on his guard. Ishita made no secret of the fact that she wanted to be Mrs. Yash Scindiya.
"Hello Yash. Hello, your name is Aarti right? So your plans worked. The maid is becoming the madam. Well done."
"Ishita!" Yash said warningly.
"What Yash. Surely all the guests already know that she used to clean your apartment for a living."
Aarti was close to tears. This kind of thing was her worst fear. Why she didn't want to agree to marry him in the first place. A crowd was now forming to see what the drama was.
Yash was livid, he was about to have a go at Ishita when he felt a touch on his arm.
"You know Aarti, Ishita? How did you meet?" Asked Arpita, having heard the story already from Aarti and now coming to stand next to her.
Ishita blushed and didn't answer.
"No matter, you are so right. Everyone doesn't know about Aarti and I think they should know. I think it is the most amazing love story ever. They were destined to be together. She was raised in an orphanage when both her parents died. Still she managed to be well educated and make a successful career for herself. She nearly lost everything as a man made her come to Mumbai to marry her under false pretences and because she had no means, ended working as a cleaning lady for Yash. And they fell hopelessly in love. But due to misunderstanding the split up and years later found each other again and finally are getting married. Isn't it just a fabulous story?" Arpi looked at Ishita smiling, but the hardness in her eyes were unmistakable.
"It's a fairytale." came another voice. "Finally my broody brother in law has found his princess and he is the happiest that I have ever seen him. No other woman would have be able to make him this happy." Vidhi said also smiling and looking at Ishita, making it known exactly how well supported Aarti was.
The next thing astounded everyone.
"I don't believe in love at first sight or fairy tales, but I do believe in kismet. These two grew up in two different worlds and despite that, they keep finding their way into each other's lives. Yes, she was brought up in an orphanage and till today, she gives back that orphanage of her time and money. And according to what her boss tells me she is a very diligent worker and has a high position at her company. If she wanted to take advantage of Yash and this family she would have down so years back. Personally I am proud of my son for having chosen a wife with the qualities that Aarti bahu possesses. I am sure you agree with me Ishita?' said G3.
Ishita knew she had been put thoroughly in her place.
"Yes. Mrs. Scindiay." She walked away.
Aarti was overwhelmed with the support that she got from the ladies, especially her future mother in law. She couldn't say anything at the risk of bursting out in tears so she just nodded and her mother in law nodded back. No words were needed.
Later that night at SM:
Yash went to his parent's room.
"Ma, I just want to thank you."
"For what son?"
"For what you did for Aarti today."
"No need for thanks my son. She is family now."
"I know but still, it meant so much to both of us. It could have all gone so wrong today and if it had, I know I would have lost her. But thanks to Arpita, Bhabhi and especially to you, she knows that she is completely accepted into this family."
G3 smiled at him.
"Ma, I didn't tell you everything about Aarti. I know the maid thing was a surprise for you today. I just want to tell you everything, so there are no more surprises." He told her everything that happened in Aarti's life in Mumbai.
"Ma, just so you know. Although she stayed with me, Aarti is still beyond reproach." He didn't think it was necessary to tell his mother that it had nearly happened if they had not had the disagreement.
"I believe you. I told you that I am happy with your choice. It will be a challenge as I can see that she is not traditional and she had been on her own so long, but we will make it work. I just want you to be happy."
"I am Ma. Very happy."
His mother kissed him on his cheek and they hugged.
There was no homecoming ceremony as they got married in Mumbai. But it was so fitting that they spent their first night in the place that they first met. He carried her into the lift and held her till they reached the suite and the bedroom that was made up by Vidhi.
He put her down on the bed and started taking off her jewellery.
"Happy baby?"
She smiled and nodded her head.
"We've come full circle. Back to the place where we fell in love." she said.
"Yes, I am glad we are spending our wedding night here. In the place where I first saw my love in I all her naked splendour."
"Naked?"
"Yes."
"What are you talking about?"
"Oh, haven't I told you." he said as he said as he started removing her sari as well.
"Told me what?"
"About the first time I saw you."
"I was there remember, you gave me a fright and I kicked over the bucket of water and fell into your arms for the first time." she smiled and kissed him softly.
"That was not the first time I saw you. The week before that I came home early and guess what I saw in my shower."
She gasped and said.
"No!"
"Yes" he chuckled.
"No, Yash. You saw me in the shower? Why didn't you say anything?"
"Because I wanted to keep seeing you."
"I'm so embarrassed" she said clutching her hands to her face.
"It's too late now. Besides, you were mine in your natural splendour from that day." he said taking her hands away.
She hugged him.
"I love you so much. I am going to make you so happy." she said.
"Actions speak louder than words, Mrs. Aarti Yash Scindiya"
She giggled, loving the sound of her new name.
She helped him get the rest of her wedding attire off. Again she was nude in front of him and unashamed. She then got off the bed and started undressing him as well. When they were both naked, standing opposite each other, she put her arms around his neck and kissed him.
He lay her down on the bed, and started kissing her but she was too impatient to wait for long. Their joining, though painful at first for her was everything that they expected to be and more. It was so much more than a physical act, they were pouring out there love on each other once again being secure in their love and commitment to each other.
A week later, Aarti and Yash were dressed up again. She was wearing a beautiful white and sliver lehanga choli that was sleeveless and bare backed, something her mother in law did not approve of she gathered from her brief look, but it was a gift from her husband and he insisted she wore it. They were having a second wedding celebrating at the orphanage with their immediate family and Mansi, and of course Arpi and Amaan. Kunal was there as well. It seemed that he and Mansi made quite a connection at the wedding and he had taking some leave to spend some time in Bhopal. They were having a ball with the kids. There was food and all the kids received gifts and as usual Palak was ever close to her Adi-ma and Yash-pappa.
They were going on a honeymoon the next day. Yash did not want to go to any of SE resorts and he didn't want to travel too far so they went to a Bhandhavgar National Park at the Tree house hide outs. It was absolutely stunning but in the 2 weeks that they were there they went out only twice. They were more interested in exploring each other than their surrounds.
Finally they came home and preparations started for their big move to the USA. She was now no longer employed so all she had to do was pack, otherwise spent her time at the orphanage.
"So what have you been up to today love?" he asked as they settled in their room for the night.
"I went shopping with Palak. We did our nails."
"Did she enjoy it?"
"She loved it, and then we had to buy nail polish for everyone." she laughed.
"And of course we had to buy something for Yash Pappa. It was difficult trying to convince her that you are a man and don't wear nail polish. So we got you a box of chocolates. And of course a hug and a kissy." she said as she gave him his hug and kiss.
"I will take some time off on Friday afternoon and we can take her out together? Maybe pick up Vendant and Vedhika from school and we can treat the kids" he said still holding her tightly.
"Yes, they'd like that. I'd like that." she smiled and held him tighter. "You're the best"
"And don't you forget it" replied.
"You are going to miss her aren't you?"
"My munchkin? Very much, how am I going to tell her that I am not going to come there anymore." she said very teary now.
"Just enjoy her for the next month before we move. Now can I have some of your attention too, please?"
"Of course. Are you still up to finding a naked woman in your shower?"
"Am I ever?" He said as they made their way to the bathroom.
A couple of days later they were snuggling in bed after an early morning tryst.
"You have to get you lazybones out of bed early, you will have to go into the office with me today."
"Why?"
"We have papers to sign."
"What papers."
"I have had enough of you. Divorce papers."
"Really, make sure I get a very healthy settlement in the divorce ok. I won't settle for anything less than half of what you own."
He held her tighter and nibbled in her neck again.
"Always the greedy Minx. And I love it" he said getting distracted again.
"Yash, wait. Tell me what papers I have to sign" she said pushing him away.
"Oh. Stop distracting me woman."
She looked at him in mock shock.
"Anyway its papers for a petition to adopt Palak."
She pushed him further way.
"Are you serious, Yash?"
"Yes."
Tears started to well up in her eyes.
"Are you not happy love?"
She shook her head as tears were running down her cheeks.
"Aarti?"
"I ... I ...I am so... so ... so ... happy. I... I ... Love ... you ... so much."
He sighed in relief.
"I love you and I love Palak too. But we have to wait to tell her till all the red tape has been cleared. I am trying to push things through quickly so that she can go with us to the USA. We will have to apply for foster care first. And they don't allow kids to leave the country like that. But Shoba-ma can put in a good word for us."
"Ok. Did I tell how much I love you?"
"Yes, but I never get tired of hearing it."
"Maybe I should show you." she said as she started kissing him and delaying their trip to the office for a bit to show him how happy she was.
A week before they were about to leave Yash was racing to orphanage. Aarti had called him to come there immediately and she sounded frantic. When he came into the orphanage she ran to him and clung to him.
"Baby, what it is. Is it Palak. Is it Shoba-ma?"
She sobbed so much she couldn't get a word in. Shoba-ma was standing behind her.
"What is it Shoba-ma?"
"Yash, its Palak's mother. She came back to fetch her."
