Perfect Imperfections – Epilogue
It was a couple of weeks later and finally it was time for the wedding. Aarti had worked her fingers to the bone as she wanted to make the outfits for each of Pari’s wedding ceremonies as a gift. She did it with so much love but it was an awful lot of work. Also, despite her mother in laws slights at her designing skills, she made her outfits too. She was sure she would wear none of them but she would not give up hoping.
She was really very tired and stressed out. She was aware of Arpita close to her all the time. This caused her so much anxiety and she could not share this with anyone. Definitely not her husband.
She did not involve Pari anymore as she wanted her to enjoy her wedding and not to be dragged into the war that she felt was only her and Arpita’s. The last she told Pari of it, was that she did not want to inform Yash until she was at least 3 months pregnant as she did not want to disappoint him if something went wrong again so early in the pregnancy. This news of her fictitious pregnancy was obviously for Arpita’s benefit who was spying on her almost 24/7. She even had the audacity of asking her to design an outfit for her for the wedding.
“Aarti dearest,I hope you don’t mind and I know you are terribly busy as it is, but I would feel so honored to wear a unique design of yours for the wedding. I know it’s late notice.”
Aarti looked at her without missing a beat. She could read her so well these days.
“Really, you want me to design a dress for you. I am so flattered, Arpita.”
She knew she wanted to keep her so busy so that she could be distracted.
“You know, I am so tired these days. I am designing and making Pari’s outfits but I can make a plan. After all, you a longstanding friend of my darling husband. And it would make him happy if we can be friends too. I will do anything to make my husband happy. Anything.” Aarti said suggestively.
Arpita’s smile hit her like an avalanche of snow. She could not hide the cold, hatred in her eyes.
“Why are you so tired, if I may ask?
“Oh, just the wedding and stuff, my day job and you know my husband can be quite demanding at night.” Aarti winked at her.
“In that case, thank you. I really do appreciate that you are willing to go the extra mile for me. I am sure to tell Ma. You know, maybe that can bring you closer to her. She really values my opinion.”
“Mmmm”,smiled Aarti, I will send over some provisional sketches and you can let me know what you like. And thank you for putting in a good word with Ma for me.”
Arpita smiled coldly and left.
She was on her way to the haldi ceremony, deep in thought as she was usually these days. Especially when she did not have to be on her guard. Suddenly she lurched as the driver swerved sharply, tyres screaming. She grabbed the seat in front of her as the safety belt burnt into her shoulder.
“Niel, what happened!” she screamed as the care came to a halt.
“Ma’am, did you not see the truck heading straight for us.”
“T … Truck?”she said still very shaken.
“Yes,ma’am. I hooted and swerved but it just didn’t stop.”
She swallowed hard.
“Ma’am, I have to phone Yash sir. He…”
“No Niel. He will just worry. We are safe, right? Thanks to your great reflexes, we are safe. I will forever be in your debt.Just please don’t tell Yash. He will worry unnecessarily. It was just an accident.”
“Ma’am, that was not …”
“Please Niel. You know how Yash can get about me. He will probably blame you and I don’t want that.”
She knew she was being very devious and manipulative. Her husband was actually such a sweet loving person, but it was well known to everyone that worked for them how overprotective he was over her, and how he could lose control. No one wanted to be at the end of that scenario.
“Yes, ma’am. But I think we should be on our guard.”
Their“drivers” were all ex-police and military personnel for obvious reasons. She knew that had this been a normal driver, she probably would not have been alive right now.
“We will. I will. Thank you, Niel.”
She pretended to be calm but inside she was shaking, but she has to push through. She could not offer her in-laws or even her husband mere suspicions. They would never believe her and she could not blame them. The Apita they knew and the Arpita she knew were two completely different people. She had to expose her to everyone and she had to have concrete evidence.
The day at Pari’s was a blur. He mind was elsewhere. The fear of what Arpita was capable of was threatening her resolve. It felt like her life just started and she had an awesome future with a wonderful man that adored her, a man that she wanted to start a family with and live the rest of her life with, she did not want to lose it now. She thought of what happened earlier made her feel physically ill, but she had to purposefully keep herself from falling apart. For Pari’s sake but also for her own.
Their family came later. When she saw Yash, she almost had a meltdown. She ran to him and hugged him. Silent tears rolled down her eyes.
“Baby,what’s wrong.”
“Nothing, I just get very emotional at weddings that’s all.”
“You are a big emotional fool.”
“I know.”She said.
“And I love you.”
“I know.”She said as she finally, unwillingly tore herself from him.
“I love you too. So much.” She said as they made their way to the rest of the guests.
The drive home was nerve wrecking and she gave a huge sigh of relief when they got home.
Nothing happened at mehendi ceremony, but again she was wound so tightly. She expected someone to pounce on her any moment. And Arpita was everywhere.
She was kind of looking forward to the Sangeet. That was always her favorite, as she loved to dance. She had made Yash practice a dance with her for weeks much to his annoyance. But she always rewarded him well afterwards and that made him happy.
The venue was one of the most luxurious hotels in the city. It was a lovely ceremony. Their dance went well and for a moment she forgot the immense pressure that was on her.
She danced the night away and finally she told Yash she needed some fresh air and she stepped out on the balcony as he went to get her a drink.
She was enjoying the cool night air when her fears were realized.
“Did you enjoy your last dance.”
She turned around and looked at Arpita’s murderous face. She had a gun in her hand.
“Yash is onhis way back, Arpita.”
She laughed, the laugh of a lunatic.
“He just got a message that his mother is in their suite and is calling him.”
“Arpita, you can’t do anything here, there are too many people. They will hear the gunshot”
She shrugged.
“It’s just us here. And no one saw me coming onto the balcony. Besides the music is so loud, I doubt people will hear.”
“Arpita,please …”
“You know what I realized, Aarti. If you want a job done right, you have to do it yourself.”
“What are you going to do Arpita.”
“What do youthink.”
“If Yash finds out ….”
“He won’t”
“He doesn’t love you. He won’t marry you.”
“You’re wrong. When he is grieving for you and your unborn baby, who do you think will be there to comfort him. Eventually, he will turn to me. I will give him the children you never could.”
“You mean the child that you took away from us before and the one that you are trying to take from us now. I was so stupid; I should have realized immediately that you orchestrated that “accident”. But in my grief, I forgot that you called me to meet you that day. It’s only afterwards that it struck me.”
“Yes, I know that. But why did you never confront me outright or tell the family and Yash.”
“Because they don’t know that you are a psychopath and a murder. They would never have believed me.”
“You know it will be so sad for Yash to find out that he was going to be a father again and he didn’t even know.”
“Please, Arpita. For the sake of my baby.Please.”
She laughed again.
“I like that. The sound of you begging.”
Then she went into a rage. And she stepped closer to Aarti.
“You should have thought of that when you stole what belongs to me! He is always and will always be mine. You don’t deserve him. You little low class nuveau riche man stealer!” she screamed.
Aarti, swallowed hard and closed her eyes.
“If being high class means to be like you, Arpita, I would rather be low class anytime. And I am not a man stealer, I am married to the guy. You know the one you want but you can’t have. I am the one he loves and now you are even less than a friend to him. You are nothing.” Aarti screamed back, taunting her attacker.
“I am tired of this, tired of walking on egg shells, waiting to see what your next move will be. I can’t take this anymore. Shoot me if you want to, just shoot. Kill me like you killed my baby. Do it!” Aarti shouted.
“Oh yes, I will kill you like I killed your baby and I will enjoy every minute of it.”Said Arpita as she cocked her pistol.
Aarti lunged at her with full force and making them both topple over. She heard Arpita’s screamed as she punctured her with the dagger that she discreetly removed from the side of her lehenga. She was not even sure where she had struck. Then there was a sound of the what she thought was a gun shot. She tried to call Yash, but she couldn’t utter a word as she lost to the darkness that engulfing her.
She opened her eyes. There were bright lights. She was so confused. Where was she? Suddenly everything came back to her. Did she get shot, was she dead? She tried to get up but she couldn’t. She tried to call Yash, but only a soft moan escaped her lips. She was so scared.
A shadowcame over her.
“Mrs. Scindiya, are you awake. Wait I will call the dr.”
And the person left.
Suddenly the room was abuzz. There were a sea of faces. But not the one she was looking for. They were talking, looking at her, touching her, she saw the tubes that attached to her.
Finally, she heard it. His voice.
“Doctor. Is she conscious? Is she OK? Aarti, baby wake up.”
She saw his face and she closed her eyes in relief as silent tears escaped her eyes.
He was being pulled away.
“Mr. Scindiya. I need to examine her. Sir, please be patient. For your wife’s sake.”
She lost consciousness again.
When she came too, he was sitting on a chair next to her bed. He was sleeping with his head on the bed and he held her hand.
“Yash.” She whispered.
He was awake immediately.
“Aarti, baby. Are you ok. Must I call the doctor. I’m calling the doctor.”
“Don’t leave me.” She whispered.
“Baby …”
“Please.”
“Ok. But how are you feeling.”
“So tired.”
“Do you have pain?”
She shook her head.
“I’m a little thirsty.”
“I will get you water.”
He got her the water that was standing beside the bed and she sipped through a straw.”
“What happened? Arpita?”
“That bitch. She shot you.”
“Where is she now?”
“She is also in hospital. You stabbed her in her pelvic area she lost quite a bit of blood but she will make it. And afterwards she will be going to jail?”
“And me?”
“No. You are fine love. You only have a flesh wound, but your head knocked against the railing and you had a severe concussion. Otherwise you are fine. I found your phone. It was still busy in recording mode so I know everything. Why didn’t you tell me Aarti? Why? Why would you put your life at risk like that? If I had lost you …”his voice caught in a sob as the tears streamed down his eyes.
“Shhhh, baby. I’m fine. You didn’t lose me. I’m sorry but it was a suspicion, a very strong one, but still a suspicion. I wasn’t sure that you would believe me. But its over now. I love you baby.”
“Yes, it’s over and soon that bitch will be behind bars.”
“How long have I been here. The wedding?”
“You have been here for 24 hours. The wedding ceremony has been postponed till you get discharged. The doctor wants to keep you here another day for observation.”
“But they can go on without me.”
“Chote get married without his bestie Bhabhi. I don’t think so? Relax babe. Everything will be fine. The wedding will happen when it happens. Your health is my priority.”
“I love you.” She said.
“I love you too.” He said and kissed her hand.
“Excuse me.” They both looked up at the sound of a familiar voice. It was his mother and his father followed along with her parents.
“Come in.” Yash said.
Her parents both came to hug her. Her mother was in tears.
“Mom, I’m fine. I promise.”
“You better promise that you will never do anything that insane again, you hear.”
“Promise mom. Now stop crying.”
“I love you my baby.” Said her mom.
“Bahu, we just came to check if you are ok.”Her mother in law finally spoke.
“I’m fine,Maji”
“Bahu, I …we … umm …” his mother stuttered.
They both looked extremely awkward and could hardly meet her eyes.
“We are sorry bahu.” His father took over. We never … How could we …. She was from a good family. She was part of our family we could never have thought that she would do … be so evil.”
It was clear that he father in law barely had the words for this scenario. What had transpired was beyond his comprehension.
“We are at fault bahu. We never gave you a chance. We judged you and it nearly cost you your life and the life of another grandchild. You took such a great risk trying to expose her. I can’t begin to tell you how sorry I am.” Her mother in law said.
“It’s fine,Maji. I understand. Arpita was very convincing. Sometimes I even doubted myself when it came to her.” Replied Aarti faintly.
“No bahu. It’s not fine. I’m so ashamed for the way I treated you, when all you did was to try and please us. Please forgive us. Forgive me.”
“Please Maji, it is done. It’s over. You are forgiven. I bare no grudges. All I want is to move on from here. With my family. But I’m sorry Maji, there is no baby. I just made it up to draw Arpita out. I knew she would react again if she thought I was pregnant.”
Her mother-in-law looked at Yash with a baffled expression and he looked back at her and then at Aarti.
“Babe,you’re wrong.”
“About what?” she asked also now baffled.
“The baby.”
“No, you see…”
“Aarti, youare pregnant.” Yash interrupted.
“The doctor confirmed it. He checked the baby’s heartbeat and made sure that everything was ok with you and the baby. Thankfully it was.”
Aarti staredat Yash in shock.
“You mean…”
“Yes babe. We are having a baby.”
The tears started streaming down her cheeks and clasped her hand to mouth in disbelief.
Yash came to sit on the bed next to her and held her. He kissed her at the top of her head.
“I could have lost this baby too. If I had known… I would never …” she sobbed as the realization of what could have happened engulfed her.
“Shhhhhoney. It’s fine. The baby is fine. Nothing happened. You’re both fine. Arpita is out of our lives for good. Your life will no longer be in danger. She will be in jail for a very long time.”
The doctor came in again.
“I think Mrs. Scindiya needs some rest. She has been through a great ordeal and in her condition as well. Mr. Scindiya you can stay but unfortunately everyone else has to leave.”
Their parents greeted and left.
Yash settled next to her in the bed and she lay down in his arms.
“We are having a baby, Yash.” She said softly.
“Yes, we are. And I am beyond happy. You are too, aren’t you Aarti?”
“You have no idea, love. I was so afraid that after the accident I would not be able to conceive. I think everyone is happy now, don’t you Yash? Your parents seem to be accepting of me now.”
“I can hear that you are still a bit skeptical, but yes they are. And if they are not, trust me, after all that has happened I will be even less tolerant. My duty is first to you and our child. You are my wife and I love you. It’s time that they accept it.”
“I love you too. So much.”
“Can you do me a favour though?”
“Anything.”She smiled at him.
“Will you be you? The Aarti that I fell in love with. The Aarti that was wild, adventurous and unafraid to take risk. Not the risk that you just took but I mean, the way you created your own business empire, traveled the world and especially stood up to me. I love you,but I worry that you are losing yourself in trying to conform to the Scindiya mold. I never want you to have a reason to be unhappy. Will you do that for me?”
She smiled at him.
“So you want to me to be the girl that you were too afraid to love. Wild and wanton and demanding.”
“Yes, that girl. The one that taught me to be unafraid to love and to fight for what I want even if it is not the perfect fit. I miss her sometimes.”
“You know what? I miss her too. I might give maji and bauji a heart attack, but I want to be authentic for our baby, for you but especially for myself.”
She kissed him lingeringly.
“It’s taken us so long to get to this point hasn’t it?”
“Too long. But we are here now. And from here on end, we won’t have to fight so hard for happiness. We will just fight with each other, nothing big, just little squabbles, then make up in a most pleasurable way.”
She giggled.
“Sounds good.” She yawned.
“I think the doctor was right. I feel exhausted.”
“Then sleep babe. I’ll be here.”
“Forever?” She whispered already half asleep.
“Forever.”He confirmed looking at his beautiful sleepy wife. He kissed her on her cheek as he closed his eyes, finally getting some real rest since the whole terrifying fiasco. The thought of losing her was more than he could fathom. And instead of losing her, he now had a little one on the way as well. He breathed a sigh of complete and utter happiness. His whole world was right there in his arms. He vowed to himself to be more vigilant where they were concerned in the future. He would take care of them till his last breath. Not that his crazy, plotting wife apparently needed much protection from him. Yes, she was wild, funny, and crazy. Even though she was supposed to be completely wrong for him, everything felt complete and right in his world at this very moment. They were both supremely flawed and the years of heartache proved it, yet those imperfections was what drew them to each other and made them perfect for each other.
Perfect Imperfections, he thought as he dosed off to a peaceful slumber.
Wow, I can't believe I managed to post. Only had to change one kinda baddish word.
Hope you enjoy the epilogue.
