Chapter 4
The month was over and he had been home for a few days. She was once again the perfect wife and bahu but her smile was gone. She was going through the motions. He had brought he gifts from Dehli. She said thank you and had never bothered to open them. She didn't interact with the family at all. She did what she need to do and then she went to the bedroom or garden. He wanted her so badly. Every night was a battle for him. The only thing that stopped him was her words of how she felt when they made love. Well there was no love involved.
She was walking up the stairs and she felt tired heavy. Her head was spinning. She would just give him his coffee and go and to lie down but before she reached his office she lost consciousness. He heard breaking glass and rushed out of his office to see he lying on the floor. He went into a mad panic.
"Ma, call the doctor. Quickly."
They were instructed to take her to bring her to the hospital. She came too quite quickly. They took blood for tests and the doctor came back with the results.
"Please can I speak to Mr and Mrs Scindiya alone?'
"Well congratulations are in order. I seems you are about 3 months pregnant."
"No" said Yash. He was thinking that this was the worst possible timing. And also the circumstance of the conception was horrible.
Both Aarti and the doctor looked at him. The doctor felt awkward and excused himself. He then realised how it came across.
"Aarti.."
"Please get my clothes Yash. I want to go." she was humiliated by him yet again
How did he always manage to do and say the wrong things with her?
He is he now going to explain to her what he meant.
He was so confused, he needed someone to talk to. Someone that completey understood him. So he called Arpita.
"Please Arpita, just this once. Meet me. I need to talk to someone."
"Ok Yashu"
They met at a restaurant at the local mall. He was happy to see her again. She was still so beautiful but right now his only concern was Aarti.
"How are you doing darling."
"Good and you?"
"I'm fine. But you are not really are you? Otherwise you wouldn't have calle me."
"Your right. My life is an absolute mess."
"Tell me.
He told her everything that had happened. Even when he rasised her hand against her.
"You know what this means right."
"What?"
"You are in love with your wife." he realised that what she said was true.
"Yes, I love Aarti. But how, when did it happen."
"That I can't help you with. But I suggest that you go home and tell her how you feel. I am not the right person to talk to anymore Yash, she is. And she needs you now more than ever. And tell her everything. Clear up all the misunderstandings."
"But she hates me, Arpita."
"You know the flip side of hate is love, right. So don't give up, you have a chance at love and a family don't lose it."
"Thank you Arpita. I know what I need to do now." he said as they stood up. He hugged her good bye. When he looked up his heart sank. She was standing there watching them.
She had gone to the mall to get some things for the baby and also to get out of the house. She was very excited about the baby even thought his father was not. She would love him so much. She would be the best mommy in the whole world,
She was thinking to herself if she should perhaps talk to Yash about the baby. She wanted him/her to have a family and that included his father. Maybe he was right that time when he said that they could make it work, she couldn't hate him too much if she kept giving into him in bed surely. She didn't know about that anymore. All she knew was that it was about more than the two of them and for her baby's happiness she would do anything.
Then she saw them. She recognised her from his pictures. They were talking intimately. His hand on hers. Then he got up and hugged her. She felt like someone kicked her in the gut. She saw that he noticed her. And she turned around and ran. She got into a cab that fortunately stopped in front of her.
"Drive, please just drive." She wasn't thinking. She just wanted to get away from him.
"Oh no" he started running after her but by the time he came outside she was gone. He looked everywhere. Eventually he went home and waited there. He called her on her phone but there was no answer. He paced for hours. She didn't come home that night or the next. He had gotten the best firm of private investigators to find her. Even tried to trace her cell phone but to no avail. He was devastated. His family tried to tell him to forget her and to move on. Especially since he got the signed divorce papers. But he wouldn't give up on her. He loved her. He would find her and his child. No matter how long it took.
"Please will you take me to Lalitpur. I will pay you. Please. She had just remembered her aunt. She was the only one that she could think of. She couldn't go back there. It was over. That is why he didn't want the baby, because he still wanted her. There was no space in his life for them. So she would make it easy for him. She would take herself and the baby out of the equation. She would stay with her aunt for a while till she had made plans for her future. She only had enough money for the tax and the clothes on her back. She hoped her aunt could help. She needed help.
"Don't worry baby. We will be allright. Mommy will take care of you," but even to her ears it sounded implausible. She had nothing and no one. Please Lord help me. she prayed.
Chapter 5
She had no choice. She had to do as he wanted. She was in her office the next day when he came.
"Aarti, I want to meet him" but before she could reply the inquisitive little monkey came running in.
"Mamma, mamma. Who is this?"
She didn't know what to say.
"Hello Ansh. My name is Yash. I am friends with your mamma."
He looked to his mother. She nodded.
"Did you come to play with her?'
"I haven't seen her in a while so I came to visit her and I wanted to meet you."
"Me? Why?"
"Because I haven't met you and Rhadha-ma before. And I really wanted to meet you."
She didn't see the point of prolonging it anymore. He had to know sometime or other.
"Sweety, remember when you asked me why Dheer has a daddy and you don't? Remember I told you that not everyone's daddy's live with them but it doesn't matter as they are still family? And you asked me when you will see your daddy? Well your daddy is here now. Yash is your daddy. He missed you and he wants you to live with him?"
They could see that he was trying to process the information.
"And you mamma? Where will you stay?"
"I want her to stay with us too." Yash said quickly. For him there was no other option.
"Where do you stay?"
"In Bhopal. I stay in a house with my brothers and my mamma and pappa. And they are also looking forward to meeting you."
"When are we going?"
"Well I have to speak to your Mamma about that first."
"Ansh, Pappa and I need to talk. Go to Nani for a while, please"
"Ok, mamma."
When Ansh was out of earshot he said,
"So Aarti, what is your decision"
"What about Arpita?"
"What about Arpita? She is happily married and has two children."
"So you two didn't get married."
"Aarti, I told a long time ago that was not an option."
"And after that you were meeting her behind my back. What did you do to me when you thought I was having an affair, Yash and yet you did it. You probably reacted like that because you were guilty of the very thing that you accused me of."
"I am sorry for doing that to you. I will regret it every day of my life. There is no excuse for what I did but I can't take it away. All I can do is ask you forgiveness."
"If it was only that, then maybe I could have forgiven you, but there were other things that you did to hurt me. You are still hurting me so I can't forgive you Yash. You don't deserve it."
Her words cut so deep but he had to press on. He could not win her over if she was so far away from him?
"It is not my intention to hurt now Aarti. All I want is my family back."
"What about my business and my family here. These people, these strangers treated me better than my so-called family ever did."
"That will change once we reach home, I promise you. And I will help you with your business. We have offices all over India but that doesn't mean we have to be there all the time. I can help you put systems into place and we can come to Lalitpur frequently to check on the business. All you need is a competent person to run it this side as well."
"Firstly, SM is not my home, it's my in laws house. Secondly, I will not let you take over my business."
"I won't take over your business. I just want to help you with the transition. Please Aarti, stop being so suspicious of everything I do and say. I am really trying here." He didn't answer about SM not being her home. He was determined that it would be her home or if his family makes life difficult for her, then he would make a home for them elsewhere.
She allowed him to help her with the transition of the business. She had a short time to groom her admin assistant to take over from her to handle staffing issues and salaries. She would still do the designing and e-mail it to the factory. Yash gave them some valuable suggestions to streamline their processes. She just wished Indira, he assistant would stop drooling over him. And it wasn't only her. All the ladies in her employ was positively smitten with him. And when he turned on the charm he could get the most difficult employee to do is every bidding. This irritated her.
Yash also started building a relationship with Rhada-ma. She was very important to him as she took care of his family for 5 years.
"Ma, please will you come and live with us."
"No beta. This is my home. That life is not for me."
"But Aarti needs you Ma. You have been her only support for 5 years. I don't think she will make it without you. I can't lose her again, Ma. I am so scared." he had tears in her eyes.
"Beta, I know your remorse is genuine and I can see that you love her. That is good enough for me. I trust you with my daughter and grandson. I know you can do this. You have been given a second chance. You have to prove to her now that you are trustworthy, that you can protect her and love her. It won't be easy but if you love her you will have patience with her."
"I do love her, Ma. Very much. But I have hurt her so much. Did she tell you that I raised my hand to her, that I forced myself on her?"
He expected judgement but she simply said.
"She didn't tell me. This proves that she still wanted to protect you. Let that be your first bit of encouragement. And beta, she is stronger than you think. She came here with nothing and look what she made of herself. Maybe she needed the separation from you and her family to find her inner strength. But she still needs your support. She is was like me, an outsider in our own family. They never gave her support, they never missed an opportunity to make it known that she was a disappointment because she didn't do things the way they wanted her to do. She was never pretty enough, clever enough or thin enough. Her sister was always the favourite and it is painful for a child to grow up like that. Her biggest achievement for them was to marry you. And for them she failed in that too. So you have to protect her from them too.
"I never knew that Ma."
"Well now you do. She had a lot of expectations when she married you. She was looking forward to being part of a family finally and she didn't even have that with your family."
"I promise I will protect her Ma. I want her to be happy and to feel accepted."
"I will go home with you for a week or two, I have a feeling that she needs me stand up against my sister. But I can't stay for good."
He understood.
The journey was nerve wrecking for Aarti. The closer they got to the destination the more she felt her herself retreating back to the person she used to be. Ansh was chatting animatedly, the questions wouldn't stop. His father happily answered every one. It was amazing how quickly these two bonded. They even shared little secrets. She would come into Ansh room and they would stop talking and giggle. They would obviously be talking about her. Then later she would find her favourite chocolates or flowers in her bed. She would just smile, but for her son. Not him. She would not melt that easily.
They stopped in front of SM. She got out of the car with shaky legs. He understood how she felt. He picked up Ansh and took her hand and walked to the door. Only Ramdulare was at the door.
"Ramdulare, please tell my parents that my family has arrived and if they don't receive a proper welcome, we will have to find alternative accommodation."
His mother came and did the welcoming rituals much against her will. They stepped in the house and saw her family was there too.
He asked Vidhi to take Ansh with her.
Her mother was the first to re-act.
"Rhada, I should have known it was you. How dare you keep my daughter away from her family for 5 years?"
"I didn't keep your daughter, Shoba. She fled from you and came to me. I gave her a home."
"She has a home with her husband!"
"Yes, she does. And I am convinced that he will give her one now but then she didn't think he could. But that is between Yash and Aarti."
"And you, how dare you embarrass me like that. You run away from such a good family, a good home to what, to go and raise my grandchild in poverty! What must these people think of us? I only ask you for one thing, to behave as a good bahu and you do this. You characterless girl." She raised her hand to slap Aarti but Yash was too fast.
"Ma, with all due respect, no one will raise a hand to my wife while I am alive. And she is not characterless and you know that. She had good reason to leave, but as Rhada-ma said, that is between Aarti and I."
"Yash" his mother said, "How do you know what she has been up to in the last 5 years. She could have been carrying on with men and now you expect us to happily accept her back."
"She was not alone ma. She was with Rahda-ma. And I trust my wife. If she is not welcome here, then we will find another place to live. It's up to you."
"I didn't say that you couldn't live here."
"Fine, I will take my wife to our room now. Ma, Rahda-ma will stay with us for a while, please prepare a room for her.
He took her hand and led her to their room.
"Thank you, Yash." she said when they reached the room.
"For what?"
"For defending me"
"You are my wife. It is my duty."
"Why do you keep saying that?"
"What?"
"That I am your wife"
"Because you are." He walked to his work desk and took out some papers and walked back to give it to her."
She looked at it shocked.
"You didn't sign it? Why?"
"Because I didn't want to. You are my wife and I will never let you go."
She was so confused.
"Why, because I am your duty? Because Arpita is already married? Because of our son? I told you before, I don't want your pity and I don't want you by default."
He moved to stand in front of her and touched her cheek gently. He knew it was too soon for her to know his true feelings. She wouldn't believe him.
"Aarti, I am committed to this marriage and to you. I have a lot to atone for, I know but all I ask is that you give me chance to prove to you that I have changed, that Arpita is not an issue in my life anymore. I don't pity you. I have seen the strong and independent woman that you have become. You have raised our son for 4 years on your own and you did a magnificent job. He is a well-adjusted happy child and all because of you. My feelings for Arpita has changed, it is now one of friendship only. Both her and her husband Aaman has been great support for me in the last 5 years. But if you don't want her in my life at all, I will cut all ties with her."
He was confusing her more and more. But the scars were too deep. She couldn't trust him. She turned away from him.
"I am here for my son only. The relationship that you and Arpita have is of no concern to me"
He saw her eyes softening. But it became hard again. He would do what Ma said. He would have patience with her. He would wait for her as long as it takes.
"Freshen up and we can get something to eat and drink" he said and left the room.
She didn't know what to think anymore. She just wished that she was back in Lalitpur. Away from this house and away from these people.
When she came downstairs, she saw that Ansh was playing with Vendant and Vedhika and his 3 uncles and he was having a ball. She stood and watched them for a while with a smile on her face. This made it worthwhile. Ansh was happy with his family. She had made the right decision for him.
He saw her standing there with a smile adorning her face, watching them. He only ever saw her smiling when it comes to her son, and that was fine for now. He would take anything that he could get. She was so beautiful. He wanted to make her smile for him too one day.
He was determined to make that happen.
