Part 2
Aarti walked bravely towards them wearing a half- hearted smile. She took a seat opposite Yash Schindia her archenemy, the only seat available and sighed thinking to herself, "another torturous day with this man."
She elbowed Vidhi and said, " you lied."
Vidhi reacted by giving her an apologetic look and Aarti had no choice but to forgive her. Both Yash and Aarti sat there staring uncomfortably at each other. It was almost lunch time so they ordered their meals. The rest of them asked for some light food whereas Aarti who was really famished because she skipped her breakfast went for a hearty lunch. Yash cocked his eyebrow when Aarti was reading her order from the menu. Aarti became self-conscious and then pretended that she really didn't care about his opinion of her.
Aarti noticed that Vidhi was painstakingly shy around Pankaj, after some coaxing from her, Vidhi was starting to be more open and conversed freely. Aarti was thoroughly involved in their conversations at times filling in details about Vidhi past whenever she was reluctant to divulge it. By doing this she escaped the torture of trying to make small talk with Yash. Since they were in close proximity, Yash had glanced at Aarti a few times and forced to acknowledge that she had beautiful set of eyes and smile. Obviously it also didn't escape his satirical eye that she talked way too much, eats clumsily and had a huge appetite.
Aarti didn't like the fact Yash was watching her eat, occasionally giving his signature cocked eyebrow look to her whenever the food spill onto the table.
"Can any woman like this man, he is so ..," she thought to herself.
The lunch ended with Pankaj inviting Vidhi and Aarti to his parents' wedding anniversary to be held in two days. He apologized for such short notice but he really wanted them especially Vidhi to be there. It will be an opportunity to meet the rest of the family and get to know them. Aarti wanted to decline yet upon strong persuasion by Pankaj and Vidhi she relented.
The day of the party arrived, Vidhi and Aarti were joined by Vidhi's parents. Pankaj parents were quite well to do therefore they had many guests arriving at their place. Vidhi was a nervous wreck and Aarti had her hands full trying to soothe her nerves. Pankaj later introduced them to his family and some close friends. Later when Vidhi and Aarti were alone Vidhi said this, "Pankaj is really a nice guy and he is very attentive and caring."
"I like his family too, all of them are so warm towards me, maa and bauji."
Aarti nodded in agreement. The only person Aarti thought didn't share the same sentiments as the others was Pankaj's sister, Ishita. She thought it was best not to alarm Vidhi with this information since it was Vidhi's good nature to think good of everyone. Aarti was amused when she accidently listened one of Ishita's conversation.
"Ishita, you are very lucky. I heard you are dating Yash Schindia. Do I hear wedding bells?" her friend asked.
"Soon, very soon," Ishita answered.
Aarti walked away feeling bewildered and amused thinking, "Aha, there is someone who likes
Yash Schindia and she is just like him proud and conceited."
Aarti was still smiling when Yash caught her, she looked at him and laughed.
The night progressed well for Vidhi and Pankaj, their families were already planning their engagement. Vidhi was beaming and Aarti was excited for her. On the way back Vidhi made a remark, "Aarti, I wish you can find someone for yourself too, someone kind and who will take care of you."
Aarti was silent, she rested her head on Vidhi's shoulder and her mind wandering thinking that this kind of happiness will never be hers. She had her chance before but all her dreams came crashing down, how can she possibly ever dream again. A tear fell from her eye and she was in sombre mood all the way back.
A few days passed uneventful and she was back to her old and cheerful self. One day as she was riding her scooter she saw Yash by the road side. His car bonnet was opened so Aarti suspected his car must have broken down. She rode passed him not the least interested to help him, he probably wouldn't require her help she reasoned. Then, on second thought she turned back. She was moving to his direction when out of sudden a man appeared out of nowhere, went to the back seat and stole a small bag. He made a run for it, Aarti who watched the whole incident sat on her bike and chased after the man.
To all this, Yash was unaware until he went to the back seat and found his bag missing.
"Oh shit," he said while running his hand through his hair in frustration.
He looked around and saw a man running some distance from him and thought, "that must be him". He called the police first and then ran after the man to see the direction he was taking.
By then Aarti was following closely behind the man, she pondered what action to take. She prayed to god, wished for luck and rammed her bike hitting the man. Both fell down, Aarti quickly got up while the man was holding his leg screaming in pain and cussing her. She went closer to try to get the bag, she picked the bag but as she was to about to leave the man grabbed her leg, holding it tight. She kicked his leg where she guessed it would hurt the most, he screamed and released her leg.
Aarti moved to her bike and saw Yash running to their direction. The scene that greeted him was one he would never forget. He walked towards Aarti while gasping for air, she handed him the bag and started her scooter to leave from there. She was thinking to herself, "all this for a man I don't even like, I bet he will never even thank me."
Just then Aarti heard, "Ms Dubey, thank you even though I think it is a bit foolish on your part to do this still I'm grateful."
Aarti didn't look at him, so typical of Yash Schindia a cynical thank you.
Meanwhile Yash was certainly very impressed with Aarti and thus began his admiration for her.
