Part Three
"You can stay here as long as you want, well ... I'm indebted to you for helping out Palak the other day," Yash told her when he saw her the next morning.
Aarti felt relieved, she thanked him and was about to take leave when he asked her,
"Don't you have any relatives or family you can ask for help? Have you been on your own all this while?"
Aarti pondered a while, a thought came to her, "Should I tell him about Prashant? No... then he will ask me why I'm not with him."
"No," she answered him.
Within a short span of time Palak had attached herself to Aarti. Aarti was the one to get Palak ready for school and once Palak reached home the first person she looked for was Aarti. Palak appeared distressed if she didn't find Aarti at home thinking she might have left. At night they always slept next to each other.
Their closeness was getting noticed by Yash who remarked,
"Should we let Palak get too close to Aarti, she is not going to be here forever and I don't want to see Palak get hurt."
"Poor girl she been without a mother for so long, naturally she sees her mother in Aarti who in turn reciprocates this love," Radha said.
"Like two lost souls who clung to each other," she added.
"Does Palak really see Aarti as her mother?" he reflected.
He was brought of his reverie when his mother asked him,
"I don't mean to pressure you but I want you to reconsider the overseas job. I'm asking you not because of the money... It is just that I want Pankaj to come back. He is gone so long I worry sometimes if he will ever come back."
Radha was tearing up, Yash put his hands on her shoulders and consoled her.
"Everything will be alright soon. We have managed this far and we will somehow get there."
"Maa... is right, in order for Pankaj to return I will have to go. But... Palak," he said to himself.
Aarti felt really blessed to be among them, for the first time she felt like human and not some object to pity or hate. Alas she thought she shouldn't take their generosity for granted and one day she voiced her uneasiness to Vidhi.
"I want to work and contribute too, I feel like a burden in this house."
She sighed and later said, "I have told Yashji to look for job but I guess with my lack of education it is not easy to get any jobs."
"Aarti you are not a burden, you do so much work in the house. You take care of the children, you cook and clean the house," Vidhi said.
"But still...," Aarti sounded dejected.
"No... but but," Vidhi said pulling her cheek and after a pause, "We are lucky to have you here."
"Actually I'm the lucky one, I would do anything to be a part of this family," Aarti said in all sincerity.
Radha was in the kitchen and she overhead this conversation, it hit her like a jolt. She excitedly went looking for Buaji to discuss this matter.
"Why her? There are so many girls out there," Buaji reacted.
"Jiji... look out at our situation, we can't offer much to any girl. And moreover Yash is a divorcee with a child."
"Still I'm not in favour of this, we don't know anything about her," Buaji said.
"Aarti will love Palak like her own daughter, I'm sure this is what Yash will want from a wife," Radha said trying to convince Buaji to agree.
It took a lot more to convince to her, she was a tough nut to crack but Radha managed to get through her.
"First I will talk to Yash," Radha thought to herself.
Radha gathered her courage to talk to Yash one fine day when Vidhi and Aarti were out for marketing.
"Yash... why don't you remarry?"
Yash ignored her question and continued reading his paper.
"Yash... I have already selected the girl, you just have to say yes."
"Maa... I don't want to talk about this now," Yash answered slightly annoyed.
"Then when can we talk about this. Are you waiting for Arpita? She has moved on and so must you," Radha said.
"Why must this conversation revolve around Arpita?, she is no more in our lives," Yash said rather angrily.
"Ok then lets talk about Aarti, I know she will take good care of you and Palak. Will you consider marrying her?"
Yash was taken back a bit and replied, "Aarti... maa we only know her for a few weeks. And by the way she might have her own hopes and dreams."
Yash further retaliated, "Is this because of the overseas job that you are pushing me to get married?"
"Yash you are my son I care for you and I won't wish any harm come to you but I won't lie to you I'm doing this for Pankaj also. He has sacrificed so much for this family without asking anything in return."
Unaware to Radha and Yash, Vidhi and Aarti had returned from their marketing minutes ago. They stood at the doorway and heard the whole conversation between mother and son. Yash and Aarti exchanged looks and shared a very awkward moment between them.
Still reeling from the shock Aarti immediately went to hide herself in a room. Palak came and sat on her lap, Aarti instantly caressed her hair and kissed it.
"I love Palak so much I don't want to be separated from her ever even if that means marrying her father."
On the other end, Yash was in deep thought too.
"Maa has put me in a fix. Maybe I should stop thinking about myself and start thinking about Palak, Pankaj and Maa."
