Chapter 47

Satyendra hesitated at the door it was not something he ever did previously. But facing his son-in-law with his new wife was an experience he knew which would leave him with mixed feelings. Yet he braced himself and tried to enter the house.

He had conveniently avoided attending the wedding but he could not put off facing the inevitable and once he got the call from Yash on the night of the marriage asking for him to come over he knew that the later meant sooner. Yash had said he had something important to discuss which left Satya wondering what possibly the matter could be. However when he had called yesterday Gayatriji had informed that Yash was not at home and hence his trip got postponed to today.

"Bauji please come inside…it is very unlike you to take this much time in deliberation at the door" Yash who spotted his father in law invited him in.

"Nahi…nahi Yash beta….I ….I was just lost in my thought that's all" Satya answered as he came inside and joined Yash as they made way towards the living room.

Both Satya and Yash then had to search for words to say to one another. Satya struggled to offer congratulations while Yash struggled as to how to disclose about Smriti.

"Beta…"

"Bauji…" they both began and stopped at the same time.

"You go ahead beta after all you did call me over for something you wanted to discuss" Satya offered.

Yash nodded and started once again "Bauji you know lord works in strange and mysterious ways. We are given tests which test our endurance and patience. We might curse and complain when the going becomes incredibly tough but God knows our limits and never tests us more than what we can take" Yash paused becoming thoughtful recollecting how miserable he was for the last ten months, his face showing his emotions plainly for Satya to see.

"Just when we think all is lost, just when we are about to give up the dark clouds part and a ray of hope reaches us. God saves the one who is drowning by throwing a life jacket his way" Yash said after sometime.

Satya was puzzled with what Yash was saying; he did not understand what Yash was getting at.

"Beta…?" he asked questioningly.

"I know bauji to you I may not be making any sense right now but believe me the miracle that happened two days ago made me believe in God all over again"

Just then the kids who were out with Smriti returned home.

"Bede papa….. you are here. It's so good to see you. I have so much to talk to you about" Ansh who was the first to rush to his grandfather spoke animatedly.

Satyendra immediately stretched his arms to gather Ansh close and make him sit on his lap. Palak and Payal too approached and sat on either side of Satya on the couch who gave them a loving smile each.

"Ah! You seem to be mighty excited. I am all ears, tell me about everything that's got you this excited and happy?" Satya asked Ansh giving him his sole attention.

"Yashji….I will be in my room. If I am needed please just call for me" Smriti spoke gently as she came in slowly after the children carrying Aayu in a baby basket.

Satya turned sharply on recognizing the voice and he could not believe his eyes as his mind registered who stood before him.

"Aarti…..Aarti " he said in a hoarse but inaudible voice.

Yash nodded to Smriti to which she took leave and went inside.

Satya slowly turned his head towards Yash.

"You saw there bade papa mumma has come back to us. That's what got us all so excited and happy. She is not fully well though and all have started calling her Smriti for some reason. But no matter what we are just over the moon to have her back however she is" Ansh said his each comment hitting Satya strongly who had all but forgotten that he was still holding his grandson.

"Palak, Payal and Ansh if you don't mind I have something important to talk to your bade papa. So why don't you go freshen up and then play in your room hmm..?" Yash requested his children wanting some privacy to sort things out. When the children went away Yash faced a much shaken Satya.

"Bauji….." Yash began but was stopped by Satya's raised hand.

"This was the miracle you were talking about. Aarti came back. How….how…when….where was she till now. Oh my God…. Your marriage….oh my God what did I make you do?" Satya's thoughts were all over the place.

"Bauji….bauji…do not worry ..No…the marriage did not take place. I called it off. Aarti came back in time before…before…." Yash left his sentence unfinished.

The relief that Satya felt could not be put into words. He wordlessly thanked the lord for sparing him the guilt of committing the ultimate sin. His happiness then took wings and he felt over joyed. His daughter had come back to them. His son-in-law, his grandchildren were returned their happiness. All that Yash had said earlier finally made sense to Satyendra.

"Oh thank God…this is indeed a miracle" then suddenly something pinched his subconscious, something that Ansh had said.

"What was Ansh talking about? Is Aarti not well?" Satya asked concern and worry lacing his words.

"Bauji….Aarti….Aarti is suffering from amnesia. She calls herself Smriti and has no recollection of her life as Aarti" Yash said straight out.

"What?" Satya stood up shocked.

"There is more bauji…."

"Maa you are missing Smriti already are you not?" Aakash asked.

"Of course beta she was such a lovely girl. She just made her way into my heart" Radha said fondly remembering her daughter-like Smriti.

"But to come all the way to the dargah just to pray for her, you have such a generous heart maa" Aakash said knowing very well how attached his mother had got to Smriti.

"She deserves all our prayers and more. To think what she went through….a lesser girl would have just crumbled if you ask me and the way she is taking care of Aayu all on her own inspite of everything…who does that?" Radha asked knowing that Aakash could not answer that.

As they spread the chaadar over the shrine and turned to go out there was a sudden rush of incoming crowd in the narrow alley and he somehow got separated from Radha. He was left standing as people pushed their way in from the opposite side.

"Maa…maa" he started to shout hoping his voice would reach his mother and she would trace her way back to him.

"Ah!" a woman screamed out in pain as she got pushed hard from behind and she came and crashed into Aakash who steadied her.

"Are you alright?" questioned Aakash and it was then that he saw who the lady was.

"Thank you beta" Gayatri said and then she too recognized her savior "Oh! Aakash it's you"

"Namaste maaji. How are you? I have come here with my mother to visit the shirne"

"So have I. Our family has a lot to be thankful for so I just came to offer a prayer here. But where is your mother? I do not see her with you"

"We got separated in the rush" Aakash said and kept looking out for Radha and finally spotted her. "There… can you see there, near the door, she is wearing a green saree. I am sure she will be delighted to meet you"

Gayatri's eyes searched out the woman Aakash's finger was pointing to and then her senses reeled on seeing the one woman she had hoped never to lay her eyes on ever again in her life again. It was not the time to stay still however, before Radha too could see her, Gayatri quickly turned the other way and said

"It was nice to meet you here Aa..Aakash. I better hurry or we too would be crushed by this rush" with that she marched off hurriedly leaving a confused Aakash behind.

"Uff…these rich people. Whoever could understand them" Aakash shook his head and started to walk towards his mother.

Upon reaching her he said "Maa stay close by else we might lose one another yet again"

Radha nodded and they started to move towards the exit.

"Do you know whom I met just now mother?" Aakash asked and Radha turned back to look at him curious to know more.

"Smriti's mother-in-law Gayat…"

"Sir madam please continue walking if you stop in the middle like this it causes unnecessary delay and rush" a security personal urged both Aakash and Radha to continue walking and they left the topic unfinished as a result.

"Take me to see Smriti later. I want to see if she had settled down well. I also have to tie this talisman on her hand. It will drive away all evil spirits away from her" Radha told Aakash once they reached outside.
