Boons and Curses in Todays modern times

Do really boons and Curses hold true in today modern time or is it about blessing and criticisms about people more which would make them and rectify things.

I found the whole Brahmin Bhoj aspect pretty silly because the Pundits generally bless or show their anger but they never curse the way the Gods do.

I found it silly but guess its just a show so I shouldnt bee looking at too much logic and reality in all aspects.
