Being back home is insane and very, very busy so here is, in brief, the thought that I have been meaning to put down since I watched the episode.
Putting Aarti's speech and her choice of words yesterday in the context of Tayji's malicious and regressive speech I have come to the following conclusion: Aarti felt accountable to Prashant. What Tayji said was terrible, no doubt, but there is also no denying that it was exactly how Aarti felt before the PV and before she fell in love with Yash. When the PV first came up, she hated the idea of having to break her promises to Prashant, the ones that she wanted to keep even if he didn't. This is precisely what makes Aarti different from Prashant: she felt responsible for her decision to move on from their relationship and even after everything he did, she felt like she owed him an explanation and that is precisely what her speech was, an explanation for why she had decided to move on and why she could never come back to him.
Even though I was frustrated that she didn't mention her feelings for Yash for the misunderstanding it could cause in Yash, I realise after some thought that this is the way it had to be. Wasn't he too "bewafa" to Aarti for months and months as he refused to give her even the position of a wife, and swore that he would only ever love Arpita? The irony has played out so beautifully because Yash did assume that Aarti loved her previous partner as much as he loved his; that was the basis of the PV in the first place and that is what he wanted from her. But at that time she persisted in falling in love with him, pushing him beyond his comfort level and getting him to open up to her, share his grief and finally drop his burden. And this is precisely where SP's words about confessing before it's too late come into play.
Yash will be tortured by all that time when Aarti was professing her love to him and he was too stubborn and wrapped up in his own ego and principles to recognise his own changing feelings. He will be tortured by all that time she dedicated to making a life and a family with him when he ignored her completely. And now when he has finally deigned to give a definition to his feelings, finally deigned to look at her as something other than complicated and ambiguous necessity, it is "too late." He had all this time to make her his; she was living and breathing for him and his family and if he had just locked in that last cog with his own acceptance and love, she would have been their's irrevocably. But because of him and his refusal to compromise on what he wanted and what he felt, she remained stuck in a limbo, not quite ever belonging. And now when her past is back, calling to her, she has no security, no guarantees binding her to Yash, except for her obligation to him.
On the other hand, on Prashant's side she has the Dubeys, her first real parents, and her first love and the chance to keep up all her old promises, ones that she clearly held very dear. This is what it is going to seem like to Yash. He won't stop loving her, but he will be devastated that he didn't stake a claim to her when he had the chance, when she was literally begging him to do so. The beauty of the whole thing kind of astounds me! What Yash could have been sure of had he come to terms with his feelings sooner, has cast him into a sea of doubt, utterly vulnerable and unsure. Incidentally, the same place Aarti was in from the beginning of the PV.
As for the last scene, with Aarti at the temple, that is so Aarti! She had this huge confrontation with Prashant, according to her, and admitted all the things she has been denying all these months: that she loved Prashant, that he was important to her and that she was blissfully happy with him once. She was denying these things because she felt that acknowledging her past with Prashant equated to undermining her present with Yash. Everything she felt for Yash started with him not being Prashant. She has finally freed herself from that comparison, from having to make Prashant the devil to make Yash the angel, and is free to love Yash just for himself now. And yet, she feels guilty that she took such a big step without Yash's knowledge. So she does what she always does when she knows well that she is doing wrong but feels too scared to do the right thing: she goes to god for vindication. God is to Aarti what Arpita was to Yash, a sympathetic mental construct that validates all their wrongdoings, in Yash's case his neglect of family, and his lack of compassion on a daily basis, and in Aarti's case, hiding her past and deceiving Yash and the Scindias.
This confrontation has set the stage for both of them to to let go of these crutches and become their own individuals.
