I don't understand why the bone marrow donor has tobe be blood related? Anyone?

Marrow is matched by HLA (human leukocyte antigen) tissue type. They will either take a blood draw or a cheek swab (likely both though). Blood type actually has less to do with the matching than the tissue type. Its matched on a 6 point scale, and they want a perfect 6/6 match, or a 5/6 match. A full blooded sibling is the best chance at 1 in 4, a parent or child is the next best chance, at 1 in 8. Beyond that, the chances are incredably slim that the donor will be anyone the patient is related to or knows.Its based on DNA but other factors are considered
