Overtaking the mother of all serials --
Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi -- is no mean task. That is what
Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki did this year, thanks to its lead protagonist Om Agarwal's disappearance and murder. Though it did not rock the nation to the level of Mihir Virani's accident and death (which was later negated due to popular demand), Om's disappearance did create quite a hullabaloo amongst the television audience in India.
The leap, entry of Suresh Mehra, Parvati's subsequent marriage to him and a new-look Parvati's only strengthened the serial's position as the numero uno of 2006.

After being the uncrowned king (or queen) of all serials for the last five years, this year
Kyun Ki lost out to
Kahani despite a number of twists and turns in the storyline. The mercy killing of Savita Virani [
chief protagonist Tulsi's mother-in-law] resulted in Tulsi being shown the door by hubby Mihir, an accident led everyone to believe that Tulsi had died and then her eventual trip to Haridwar -- a lot happened this year in
Kyun Ki. Not content at this, Balaji introduced Krishna Tulsi with a lot of fanfare, a leap, a retinue of new characters (Manthan, Bhoomi, Laksh, KT
et al), but things took a slightly difficult turn with KT's character not maturing as expected and Bhoomi taking over as the focal point in the serial.
The problems gripping the serial have not changed, just the characters have. Guess time to take a lesson, Ekta.
3)Kasauti Zindagi Kay

A clean sweep for the K-series from Balaji Telefilms with Kasauti in the third slot. The serial had its own highs and lows in Prem's affair with Debonita and the return of Komolika. But the storyline received a sudden twist with three events - Prerna going to jail, the disappearance and re-appearance of Mr Bajaj and the murder of Mukti and re-appearance in a different form.
Guess that is what contributed to Kasauti retaining its position in the top three. The serial is now cashing in on the popularity of Prem and the whole storyline is revolving around
4)Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champ

One of the few reality shows that had something interesting to present this year. Otherwise, everything else seemed to be old (and somewhat tasteless) wine served in a new bottle! The Gajendra Singh production that searched for young singing talents from all over the country had everything in its favour -- high voltage drama (Gurpreet's mother screaming and shouting), a differently enabled contestant (Diwakar) and the favourite (Abhrokanti) being voted out.
Just when people were getting tired of Indian Idols and Debojits, the little champs version came as a breath of fresh air. No wonder it managed to get the number four slot, fighting it out with the soaps!
5)Kaahin To Hoga

Rajeev Khandelwal's exit from the serial and Gurpreet Singh's entry as the new Sujal had made the serial lose half its charm. Like almost all other Balaji serials, everyone in this story got married multiple times (Kashish getting married to Sujal and then to Mr Ahluwalia) and had innumerable affairs (Charu falling in love with Sujal) and then there was a murder as well.
All this contributed to a good mix of drama and tears, but not good enough to keep the serial up and running. It is scheduled to go off the air in another month or so. One of the prime reasons being the audience's non-acceptance of the new Sujal.
6)Jodee Kamaal Ki

Hosted by Rakshanda Khan, this show had a nice concept and brought together various pairs -- brother-sister, husband-wife, father-daughter and so on from all walks of life. Politicians, cricketers, actors -- all participated in the show. The game show was unique in its concept and was simple -- far away from the complex relations being shown on Indian television.
Perhaps that is the reason why the Indian audience embraced it with open arms and gave it a slot in the top ten.
7)Prithviraj Chauhan

It's been a long time since the Indian viewers saw a mega-historical-serial on television. After
Ramayana and
Mahabharat, it had been quite a while since a mega serial of that stature had been aired. Saagar Arts seems to have made a comeback with their dream production --
Prithviraj Chauhan. The high-budget serial is shot entirely in Baroda. Lavish sets and reasonably good special effects have contributed to the success of this serial.
However, the usual tantrums of actors being changed during the course of the serial continues -- with the actress slotted to play Sanjukta being replaced even before she came on air!
8)Kkavyanjali

Touted as one of the biggest launches of Balaji Telefilms in the recent past,
Kkavyanjali never attained the success it was expected to. The serial has recently gone off-air after a leap, comeback after death and change in the lead cast. Amrita Singh didn't leave much of a mark and neither did Anita Hasnandani (Natasha).
The serial, however, proved to be good for Eijaz Khan and Iqbal Khan. Like all Balaji serials, this also banked on love, death, love again (this time with someone else) and then comeback from death leading to a lot of dilemma for the leading lady
9)Milee

The story of a young orphan girl, living in a convent in Shimla, the serial can attribute its success to its lead protagonist -- Mona Vasu. The freshness of the storyline -- dealing with the girl living among nuns and leading a very simple and carefree life -- played a major role in
Milee's success.
Far away from the saas-bahu soaps, Milee was a success because it was different. Raman Kumar's handling of the serial is also praiseworthy.
10) Karam Apnaa Apnaa

The newest serial to find a slot in the top ten, this serial too revolves around a Bengali household -- a weakness with Balaji. Riding high on the success of
Kasauti -- another Balaji serial based on a Bengali family,
Karam Apna Apna went one step ahead and shot a number of episodes in Kolkata.
The fresh face of Gouri (Pallavi Subhash) and the controvery surrounding Salil Ankola (who was signed for this serial and despite that went to Sony's Big Boss and finally had to be called back through a court order) made sure that the TRPs for this serial kept running high! Overnight, Ankola has turned to be a villain off-screen and on-screen!
