A VERY LOOOOONG MERA POST! FEAR NOT, DO GRAB A DRINK OF MILK, COFFEE OR CHAI & PLEASE READ ON
An engagement should come on a young girl as a surprise, pleasant or unpleasant, as the case may be. It is hardly a matter that she could be allowed to arrange for herself ~ Oscar Wilde
Prats and Komal escort a blushing Arushi down the stairs while Aman stares at Arushi like a midnight owl as she descended the stairs. Why the surprise? The Mathur women smile as Papa Mathur continues his phone convo. Was he getting information off his files about SS the biggest criminal in town? Gaurav standing alone at a distance is in no mood to mingle observes the unfolding events while Mummy and Papa Saxes wait with pride. KN is busy getting drunk yet manages to shoot a loving look Arushi's way, Ganti is grinning as Kesar and Takurain exchange smiles. Prats shares a special smile with Krishna who returns it with pleasure. All seems well at the engagement for now. The calm before the storm! SS steps forward and praises Arushi's beauty albeit accompanied by an embarrassing laughter of his own which was supplemented by even more embarrassing looks from the Mathurs, Saxsenas and Kriya.
Our story is unique. Our engagement is unique. Our ring is unique. So our wedding should reflect us."
Nainaji wants the rings exchanged right away, maybe before the Takurs botch it. Memories from Prats's engagement still haunts you Nainaji? After all it's the same location.
Dayal grants Shamu his permission to start the engagement rasam. Aman accepts the ring form his mother and slips the ring on Arushi's finger. There is applause all around. Did anyone else catch the almost sad reflective look in Krishna's eyes right after the Aman put the ring on Arushi's finger? Was that look directed at Prats who was also smiling at someone across the room? Or was it a flashback to the moments of the past relating to his marriage and the circumstances surrounding it when he was the only person happy? Ganti Dadi is happily ringing her bell while Gaurav seems the least interested person in the room. This dude is very intriguing, his silence has stories to tell, can't wait for the day they see the light of day.
I'll buy you a diamond ring,my friend, if it makes you feel alright ~ The Beatles
SS cuts in "I brought you something" and produces a diamond ring for Arushi to give Aman. Prof. thanks SS and says "we made this ring for our son-in-law with a lot of "armaan" so please let Arushi give him this ring". Aman has a ghost of a smile on his lips to see SS put in his place. Takurain is already making notes her eyes hardening at the insult to her husband's generosity. Prats and Krishna also look embarrassed for different reasons. Dayal issues his first order to Arushi to follow Papa Shamu's wishes. This is just the beginning, Arushi. Get set, you are in for a lifetime of orders. Your days of your loudmouth and fishwife talk may have to be shelved for life. Arushi slips the ring on Aman's finger and he looks almost relieved. We wonder why! Dayal gives SS a haughty look showing him who is in charge as there is applause all around. Krishna and Prats exchange meaningful looks between them.
Dance for yourself, if someone understands good. If not then no matter, go right on doing what you love.
It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance. It is the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance. It is the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give. And the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live ~ Bette Midler
SS is playing emcee for the evening. He asks Shamu if drinks were going to be served to toast the couple on the happy occasion. Shamu takes offense at the suggestion. SS reveals that he has a special gift for the occasion, "please don't decline it". Dayal is curiously awaiting SS's next surprise act. Takurain is beaming happily aware and pleased with the surprise her mard is about deliver for the evening. Dayal is looking on while Aman is looking up at the ceiling as the dancer shakes her booty on the red carpet dance floor. The dancer bumps into the two Papas but it is SS who seems to be enjoying tripping the light fantastic doing his dhoti dance. A drunken KN joins in when the dancer gets closer to him. An angry Adarsh sits scowling in his wheelchair clearly bothered by the act. The dancer then runs her fingers down Baba's cheek as Prats stood by his side glowering in anger. Baba this seems a first for you, rest assured if you so much as mention it you will for sure hear a maha baashan from Prats.
Man is a rational animal who always loses his temper when he is called upon to act in accordance with the dictates of reason ~ Oscar Wilde
There are two things over which you have complete dominion, authority and control over your mind and your mouth~ Michael de Montaigne
IG asks SS what he does for a living. SS tells him he owns baloo business and sometimes runs into problems. "Now that we are relatives you can take care of those little cases against me". Dayal asks SS "where do you get the idea that I will do anything for you?" SS challenges "why wouldn't you, you are my relative you'll have to do it for me, it's not a big deal for you". Dayal Mathur snaps and yells at SS who looks on in shock along with the rest of them. It seems SS has finally met someone who didn't fall for his charms. "Enough! You have said too much. I don't want to stand under the same roof as a criminal like you". SS tries to placate him. Gaurav is watching the ensuing tamasha with a lot of interest. Dayal accuses SS" You are trying to corner me?" SS tries a different approach "Why are you screaming? What ever you want, whatever your order, I will send it over before you get home". Dayal warns SS "I can get you arrested for attempting to bribe me". The Takurs and Saxsenas watch in alarm. Krishna is the first one to step forward to question Dayal Mathur. Prats immediately runs to his side trying to stop him from shooting off his mouth, but with no luck. SS was way over the top and out of character. His desperation to get matters under control made him careless and desperate to address them.
Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper ~ Robert Frost
Temper gets you into trouble. Pride keeps you there
A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you're looking down, you can't see something that's above you ~ C.S. Lewis
Krishna asks Dayal "what did you say? What can you do? My father is not a thief or daocit, how can you talk to my father this way? Prats tries to stop Krishna from saying more but he says "no, you stay away from me, he's talking to my father so disrespectfully and you want me to stop"? SS drops Krishna's hand down and away from pointing at the IG's face. Krishna turns to Shamu "Sasurji, what is this? Your new samandhji is talking all kinds of stuff to your old samandhji and you are standing by quietly and watching it?" Shamu's confidence that he would get police backup this time seems to have strengthened his spine "he is an IG. When the conversation is about the law how can I interfere in it?" Krishna drew his sasurji to the carpet "I don't like this. My father came here on your invitation for your daughter's engagement. It's your responsibility to make sure he is respected." Krishna made sense when he asked Prof. how he could let new samandhi insult his father after he had personally come and invited them to come. His demand that his father be respected at an event organized by sasurji was realistic. But scaredy cat Shamu didn't have the guts to stand up to new samandhi and took the loophole of law available to him to stay out of it. He is probably glad he finally got someone he could hide behind to fight SS for him instead.
I believe in a lively disrespect for most forms of authority~ Rita Mae Brown
Think for yourself and question authority~ Timothy Leary
Dayal retorts back "I can show you the many cases on file against your father and your brother. Then you will find out how respectful your father is". That statement should have stopped you cold turkey in your baashan Baba. You should have made sure you had your facts right before you went defending your bauji so confidently "You don't have to tell me anything. I know it all well. I also know no one has been able to do anything until today". Baba are you really that clueless and trusting of your father's words to you over the years as long as you got your spending money or you have been turning a blind eye to your father's ways so you can continue to live off of him and not take responsibility for creating your own future with Prats? "This is not a police or court matter, we came here for an engagement. My father was invited here with a lot of respect so you can't disrespect him. He is my father and it's a happy occasion else I won't tolerate this." Krishna also came off as clueless about his father and brother's activities. Did the IG suspect Krishna was unaware of these facts at some point? Did IG admire Krishna's loyalty and love for his father something he wished his children showed him? There was a look of curiosity and admiration on IG's face when he listened to Krishna. He didn't insult Krishna directly by any means but gave him a silent audience. Or was he wondering how this young man could be SS's son who loved and defended his father with a passion yet was clean as a whistle not touched by his father's dirty business. Krishna is lucky in more ways than one. Imagine Krishna's plight had this IG been in town when Krishna pursued Prats or before Prats fell in love with him. He could well have ended up counting bars at the city jail for his methods of romancing.
Most people accept violence against certain kinds of people as inherently legitimate, no matter who commits it. ~ Edgar Z. Friedenberg
He who establishes his argument by noise and command shows that his reason is weak.~ Michael de Montaigne
KN in a drunken stupor threatens Dayal Mathur and the Saxsena and Mathurs watch in horror. He was dumb enough to threaten an IG publicly in a drunken state with witnesses present. It's considered a crime to threaten a police officer. Is that the case in India too.
No one ever choked to death swallowing his pride
Unthinking respect for authority is the greatest enemy of truth ~ Albert Einstein
SS relents "a mistake has been made, if you can't tolerate my presence here then I apologize for it". Takurain is shocked her mard has been insulted and her temperature's is slowly rising to boiling point. Prof. is getting back into his pareshaan mode. Even a few minutes of hand clapping and happy smiles may have been too much excitement for his brain that has always survived on a pareshaan rich diet for most of his life. "What are you doing bauji, this man has disrespected you and alleged you of wrongdoing and you re apologizing to him?" SS stops Krishna "Baba listen, when two adults are talking no center center talk. Let's go." The Takurs leave and Prats is frozen to the spot when Krishna stops to utter sarcastically "Do you need a written invitation to go? Chalbo". Tut, tut, tut'.that is no way to talk to your wife in public Baba, what's the matter with you. You seriously need a quick course social etiquette and manners. And stop pointing your hand in the face of the person you speak to, be with Prats or IG. Prats doesn't follow Krishna out of there right away. No surprise there, not going to happen. She takes her 30 seconds to tell Nainaji "sorry Mummy" and acknowledging Mrs. Mathur leaves the hall. So do a lot of the guests. They probably want to get away before Dayal Mathur turns around and gives them the third degree for some petty crimes on their parts. Good idea, guests! Arushi, you just got a sample of what life is going to be life under the Mathur roof. Remember you just got yourself a fiance who doesn't bother to stop his father from ruining his engagement by doing his job offsite with his police investigation. Nice! |Wonderful dramatic evenings like this one are a staple in the life of the Mathurs, you have much to look forward to very soon. Smart move to accept a proposal of a man who had nothing more than praise for your chai making skills as the most essential criteria for marriage! Remember, an apple never falls far from the tree. Talking about apples, did you notice KN looking at you as you descended the stairs? Your marriage forecasts long hours spent in female company at the Mathurs while Aman dances to his father's tunes. Your fiance's lack of personality was clearly visible today and yet you seem oblivious to it.
Forgiveness to the injured does belong; but they ne'er pardon who have done wrong ~ John Dryden
Papa Shamu apologizes profusely "I want your forgiveness. I am ashamed of what happened today and for my samandhji for giving you grief. He tried to take advantage and for that I ask your forgiveness". Thank goodness Prats isn't like you Prof. or she would have drank that footbath water after she washed her sasuma's feet. There is apologizing and there is near groveling. So desperate to get Arushi married off to Aman that you look you looked ready to wash IG's feet today? Where is your aatma sammaan? And why are you apologizing so profusely for SS's crazy behavior? You couldn't control SS nor could you control IG's angry outburst on the occasion.
IG still acting all hoity-toity replied "There is no need for you to ask for forgiveness bec' I have no complaints against you or your family. But I do have one condition when it comes to the wedding. Sajjan Singh and his family will not attend". Saxes and the rest of the Mathur clan look in shock, Aman though has an odd expression on his face altogether. Is he going to get a tongue lashing tomorrow, maybe? Is he going to speak up or hold his peace? Ok, Aman babu that' seems to be your cue to take Arushi to the courthouse, you know where it is, just head on over, put your Hancock on the register and be done with it. Adarsh doesn't have to take a loan to pay for the wedding and he gets all three children married for free. Works out well for everyone all around. What's the need for all the hoopla if family members are not going to attend? Arushi if you think this Prince Charming came knocking on your door to romance you after the marriage, then think again. Your convos have not gone beyond talks about chai. He doesn't seem to be the type who'd step up to the plate and stand by you like your jiju Krishna does for Prats. That's the luck of the draw for you. You won't be going to your sasural's home after marriage. You will be living at police headquarters, it could well turn out to be a case of cordial house arrest. The advice you gave Krishna to always be there for your sister so she can take on the world ain't going to happen for you too. Aman will not be for you what Krishna is for Prats. Arushi did pay attention to your legal eagle fiancee today? He let his father turn your engagement into a free for all tamaasha instead of a special event. You setled for a man who is like your Papa head full of ideals, the law and regulations but has fallen short of expectations so far, just a dull dude!
