Chapter 14:

Adarsh was staring morosely at the dance floor. All the youngsters were given a separate room with a humongous dance floor and a DJ and they were enjoying their freedom from adults by dancing as outrageously as possible. Adarsh sighed and turned his stool to face the bar where he was sitting sipping Pepsi. His attention was caught by a familiar giggle and he saw Komal making her way to the bar led by a cute boy. Adarsh rolled his eyes and turned to look in the opposite direction ignoring Komal completely.

"So what do you want to drink?" , the boy asked Komal.

"Just some cold pop if they have any."

"What? Angad's little sister doesn't drink alcohol?", the boy teased her.

Komal gave him an uncomfortable smile and said "No! Of course I drink. I have a sore throat today so…."

Adarsh scoffed at Komal's blatant lie. She was not the spoilt, boozy East street girl that she projected herself to be. Inside she was just a tom-boyish, fun-loving girl that liked to climb trees and play cricket and catch lizards and do all those things that had once made her Adarsh's best friend.

"Hey Chandra came. Can you wait here while I go talk with her?"

"Sure." The boy stood up to give Komal room to go and then turned his attention to her drink. He wasn't going to let her go away easily this time.

#############################################################

Adarsh got tired of searching for Krishna and Pratigya. It appeared that his two best friends had ditched him. Their cells were unreachable and Adarsh soon got bored of sitting alone at the bar. Especially since Angad had arrived and caused a big wave at the party. Everybody was clamoring for his attention and Adarsh was about to throw up. Not wanting to cross paths with his sworn enemy, he went outside in the garden to get some fresh air.

His mind cleared instantly at the crisp, fresh air and soon the loud party noises were just a babble of distant shrieks. He started walking around the perimeter of the garden continuously dialing Krishna and Pratigya's cells. He heard a rustle in the bushes along with some dull thuds and a muted scream. He thought of Pratigya's fat canine menace and concluded that Buddy had probably escaped from his confines again. Almost every Singh party ended with Buddy busting out of his Amma-made jail and making a grand appearance on the dining table. Shaking his head at the doozy dog's appetite he climbed into the dense bushes to pull Buddy out.

"Here Bud. Come here. Bud?"

He saw dim figures in the clearing beyond the bushes which were suspiciously human shaped. Thinking that he had interrupted some lusty couple's make-out session, Adarsh was about to duck back into the bush when he heard a weak, protesting cry. He instantly recognized Komal's voice and went further in the bushes to investigate. What he saw there in the dim light shocked him.

Komal was lying on the ground and the boy who had earlier danced with her and bought her drinks was fumbling with her dress while she tried to bat his hands off weakly. Her eyes were unfocussed and bleary and she was slurring her words. The boy was forcing himself on her and she was completely powerless. Adarsh trembled with rage and ran towards the boy and kicked him off her with inhuman speed. Not expecting the violent kick the boy who was about half of Adarsh's height fell in a crumpled heap in the bushes. Adarsh continued to punch him till the boy lost consciousness and slumped to the ground.

Adarsh rushed towards where Komal was lying and checked her head for bruises and bumps.

"Komal? Komal? C'mon wake up!", Adarsh mumbled to himself as he slapped her face.

Komal stirred and tried to sit up but lost her bearing and collapsed on the ground again.

Seeing her bad condition, Adarsh lifted her in his arms and decided to take her to the safest place in the Singh house. Pratigya's secret hideaway-the pool house.

#############################################################

Krishna had rolled up his pant legs in defense against the cool frothy waves lapping at his feet. His formal shoes were hanging from their laces on his shoulder and to his right, Pratigya was walking, carrying her flip-flops in her hand. They were strolling right at the edge of the sea and the water was struggling to carry them seawards with every forward ebb. Buddy was playfully snapping at the waves and turning around to wag his tail at the couple following him, after every few minutes. The pale moonlight combined with the blue of the sea waves and the white of the sand gave the whole atmosphere a surreal feel and Krishna was walking in an almost dreamlike state.

After watching Krishna give a particularly lovestruck sigh, Pratigya bent down and splashed some of the sea water on his face. Laughing at his bewildered expression, she started to run when Krishna chased her threatening to dunk her in the water. Buddy ran after them, joining in their game.

"Wait!", Pratigya shouted as she stopped abruptly and crouched down to examine her foot. "I think I stepped on a piece of glass. My foot is bleeding."

"Oh no! Are you ok?", Krishna caught up with her and bent down to look at her foot. Just as he was about to comment on the absence of blood, Pratigya pushed him hard in the water and ran away.

"Fooled you sucker!", she called back over her shoulder to see a gasping Krishna floundering in the deep sea water. She stopped and looked closely and found that Krishna's head went under a particularly strong wave and he was no longer to be seen. She panicked and dived right into the water to save him from drowning.

"Shit! Krishna? Krishna? Can you hear me? Krishna?", Pratigya shouted over the roaring sound of the sea as she waded over to the spot where she had last seen Krishna. Desperation brought tears in her eyes which mingled with the salty water. As she went under water to try and glimpse any floating body parts, she felt a movement in the water to the left of her. She surfaced to find Krishna's body floating near her. She grabbed hold of his hand and started pulling him towards the shore.

The combined weight of Krishna and his wet, sodden clothes was tiring Pratigya out. She dragged him with all her strength and laid him on the sand. Due to the lateness of the hour no one was on the beach except them. Buddy sensed the graveness of the situation and went very still and sniffed Krishna's face. Seeing no visible movement of his chest, Pratigya ripped open his shirt and started pumping his chest. She bent her ear close to his nose to listen for his breathing while simultaneously checking his pulse. Tears streamed down her face and she was incoherent with concern for Krishna.

"Krishna? Krishna? Come on. Wake up. Krishna.." Pratigya was beside herself with fright. She was pumping his chest continuously but Krishna was not breathing at all. Just as she was about to dial emergency services, she saw a slight movement of his chest. Hurriedly she tried rubbing his hands and feet to get the blood circulating. To her horror, she found Krishna struggling to hold in a grin. She realized his trick and punched him hard in the stomach. Sniffing back tears, she stood up and started to run away from him.

When Pratigya had pushed him in the water, he was about to surface and retaliate back when suddenly a brilliant idea of payback struck him. He went under the waves and splashed around in the water pretending to drown. When Pratigya dragged him to the shore and was pumping water out of him, he couldn't hold back his laughter. After a particularly ill-suppressed grin he cracked open his eyes to find Pratigya hitting him hard and running away. Quickly recovering from the Pratigya's attack, he stood up shaking sand off of his wet clothes and ran after her.

"Hey! Pratigya wait!"

"You ass! Get away from me."

"Stop! Pratigya."

Krishna finally caught up with her and pulled the back of her shirt to make her stop. She twisted around and tried to punch him again. He caught both her hands in his single hand and turned her around to face him. He saw tears running freely down her face as she fought to try and hit him.

"You jerk! I thought you died! Why didn't you let up the trick when I brought you ashore?" Pratigya demanded sniffling.

Krishna smiled at her obvious concern and pulled her to sit with him on the sand. With her hands still in Krishna's grip, she tumbled in a heap on his lap. Making himself comfortable on the sand with Pratigya sitting perched on his lap, Krishna opened his mouth to answer.

"I was waiting for you to give me a mouth-to-mouth."

Pratigya looked at him in shock at his answer and since her hands were still being held hostage, she butted him on the head with her forehead.

"Ow! That hurt!"

"You had it coming. You made me cry and nearly gave me and Buddy a heart attack." On hearing his name, Buddy woofed from where he was sitting observing the entire scene.

"I am really sorry for hurting you. And I am sorry for making you worry and panic. How can I make it up to you Buddy?"

"Buddy? Buddy? I leaped in to save you and you thank Buddy? Let go of my hands, I'll show you pain. I'll show you an entire world of pain."

Krishna laughed and held on to her hands even more securely. With her current position on his lap, she was forced to scoot closer to Krishna, now that he had manipulated her entire upper body. With her sudden movement, Krishna's stopped laughing and wrapped his free hand around her back. Their clothes were wet from the sea water and the sodden touch of Pratigya's wet t-shirt was making Krishna's chest blaze. Her wet hair was blowing in the wind and the stubborn strands were clinging to Krishna's face. Krishna was so close to her that he could count the number of drops of sea water rolling down her forehead. A particularly naughty drop tantalized him as it rolled down her face and disappeared under the neck of her shirt. As another drop started to follow the previous one's path, Krishna bent down and sucked it in his mouth.

Pratigya jolted at the sensation of Krishna's glorious, hot mouth closing in on her neck. As his tongue leaped out to catch the drop, she shuddered with delight and freed her hands from his grip. With her now free hands, she raked his hair back and pulled his face closer to hers. The feel of his silky, wet hair gliding from her hands and the scrape of her fingernails against his scalp made Krishna close his eyes and sigh with pleasure. He placed both his hands around her slim, delicate neck and looked deep into her eyes. The silver moonlight bathed her face and caused her eyes to become a deep violet color. He looked down at her perfect, shapely lips and was about to caress them with a kiss when Buddy barked loudly at some movement on the beach.

The loud bark zapped them to their senses and they sprang apart guiltily. Buddy was in his full-growl mode and was barking loudly at some new people on the beach. Pratigya who was busy straightening her clothes was avoiding looking at Krishna who was gathering up their shoes and searching for Buddy's leash. After Buddy gave a particularly animated bark, Pratigya squinted at the figures making their way towards them. She reared back in shock as she recognized the tall boy with a pink gamcha around his neck. Just as she opened her mouth to warn Krishna, Angad stepped closer to them and shouted, "So, you are the famous Krishna Thakur?"

#############################################################

Komal's head was heavy and her eyes felt like sandpaper. Her whole mouth was dry and she remembered waking up from thirst. As the room finally stopped spinning, Komal tried to climb out of bed. When she opened her eyes and her bleary vision cleared, she took in her surroundings and gave a loud shriek.

"The sun! The sun! My kingdom for a honey bun. My kingd…. WHAT?! HIEEYAAAA!" Adarsh woke up from a deep sleep to Komal's shrieks and took up a lame karate pose. Komal stopped shouting and gave a loud giggle on seeing Adarsh's faux-kung fu pose. Adarsh dropped his pose, shook his head and tried to rub the sleep from his eyes.

"Why are you shouting?!"

"Sorry. I was a little fuzzy-brained. Hilarious pose by the way. Completely made up for my sucky evening." Komal said as she made herself comfortable on the pool house lounge chair apposite Adarsh.

Adarsh just had a very confusing dream about honey buns and treacle and Komal's friendly banter confused him further. He flattened his sleep rumpled hair and sat down on the comfy bean bag where he had nodded off to sleep. "Glad I could help. Learnt kung fu from watching the masters."

"Masters? More like morons." Komal took a deep breath as if preparing herself and said, "Adarsh I am very sorry."

Cracking his neck, Adarsh looked at her with surprise. "Komal Yadav actually apologizing for something? I must have awakened in Bizzaro-land."

"Shut up! Why are you ruining this? We were completely having a moment."

"Fine. Apology accepted."

"Hey by the way, did you pound the stuffing out of that guy? Seeing your 'HIEEYAAAA' somehow I don't think that you hurt the guy that much."

"Hey! Don't go by my fist size. They're small but deadly. Like a million little punches in one."

"Adarsh Saxena. My knight in not-so-shining armor. Who would have thought?"

"Certainly not me. I thought that it was Buddy that needed rescuing, so I jumped in the fray. If I knew it was you, I'd never have bothered."

"Yeah right! You should have seen your face when you knocked the guy off of me. You were completely freaked out for me." Komal leaned forward completely enjoying their banter.

"No offence, but you looked like you were going to throw up and pass out simultaneously. How did you even have the energy to look at my expressions?" Adarsh retaliated, both of them were falling back into their childhood pattern of one-upping each other.

"Seriously Adarsh, just admit that you care for me. The last 4-5 years were hard on you."

"Hard on me? You were the one who kept ignoring me and calling me names and completely stopped visiting our house. You were the one who changed Komal, not me. " Adarsh said as he got up from his bean bag lividly and began pacing the room.

Komal looked down in shame and started twirling her hair nervously. "I know I was a bitch to you. Angad Bhaiyya and Babuji completely clouded my judgment. They told me to break off all ties with the Saxena family. They wanted me to befriend only the rich, crook types. Now that I look back on it, I think that they exploited my naivety. I was friends with the most rich and exciting people but deep down I really missed our friendship."

Adarsh sat back, digesting what Komal had just said. "Why didn't you say anything to me? All this while I thought that you stopped being friends with me because you thought that I was weird."

Komal gave him a small grin and said "So you're saying that you're not weird?"

Adarsh grinned and threw a pillow at her "Don't joke with me young lady. I'll 'HIEEYAAAA' you."

Komal ducked from the oncoming pillow and said "Adarsh, I am a black belt holder. If you as much as look at me funny, I'll break your shin-bone in 2 equal halves."

Adarsh mock saluted her and extended his hand. "So Komal Yadav, friends?"

Komal leaned forward and shook his hand. "Friends."

Chapter 15:

Just as she opened her mouth to warn Krishna, Angad stepped closer to them and shouted, "So, you are the famous Krishna Thakur?"

Pratigya was caught in the middle of the most intense staring contest of her life. On her left was Krishna, who was standing with his feet planted firmly on the sand, looking at Angad with a mild expression of disgust normally reserved for the stuff which sticks to the bottom of your shoe when you are walking on the road. On her right was Angad, who was playing with the ridiculously pink gamcha around his neck and trying to act cool while glaring at the dripping wet Krishna. Pratigya rolled her eyes and opened her mouth to break the thick silence surrounding them.

"If the both of you have finished expending your respective abundant testosterone levels, can we have a nice talk like the adults that we are?"

Angad and Krishna looked at her as if they had forgotten that she was there with them on the beach.

"Great! Now that we have re-established the fact that I am present here, I'll be the first one to talk."

Krishna crossed his hands and took a defensive stance while glaring at Angad. Angad mirrored his actions and turned to look at Pratigya.

"Why not. Since I caught you in the act, go ahead and try to defend yourself."

Pratigya directed a venomous look at Angad, who involuntarily recoiled back, and opened her mouth to talk. "We weren't doing anything! And I really don't have to defend myself to you. Krishna's almost kiss was better than your sloppy, I-am-a-gay-boy-trying-to-pretend-I'm-straight-by-kissing-a-girl kisses anytime."

Angad's mouth opened but no sound came out of it. Krishna dropped is head and tried to hide his laughter in his sopping wet shirt collar.

"Why are you mad Angad? I mean, ask yourself the real reason for your anger. Is it really because Krishna tried to kiss me or is it because you wanted him to try and kiss you instead!"

"Pratigya!!" Both Angad and Krishna shouted simultaneously. One mortified by the truth of her words and the other plain horrified by any situation involving him and the pink-gamcha'd-one's lips.

Pratigya turned to Krishna and said, "I'm sorry Krishna. But this dude just has to stand up for what he really is." Then she turned to Angad and said "Angad, you have to tell your father the truth. You are ruining both of our lives if you don't. Are you ready to sacrifice your entire life just for the sake of a business merger?"

Angad nodded his head in understanding. "You have to think from my point of view too Pratigya. I know that it is unfair for the both of us, but I can't go up to my father and tell him that his only son is gay!"

"Why? Why can't you tell him that Angad? What is so wrong about liking boys? I like boys."

"Try telling my father that he won't be having any grandkids to run his business in the future. Try telling my mother that she won't be having a daughter-in-law to boss around the house. It's not that easy Pratigya."

"Do you think it will be easy spending the rest of your life in a very unhappy marriage? Grow a pair Angad! Go and tell your precious Babuji that this wedding cannot happen."

"Angad?"

Krishna and Pratigya did dramatic turnarounds at the sound of a strange voice while Angad cringed at the bad timing of the boy who had just called his name and Buddy started barking like a mad dog again. Pratigya crossed her arms and grinned triumphantly as she recognized the new arrival.

"Rhishabh!"

The boy, apparently named Rhishabh, squinted at the trio as if trying to recognize any familiar face beside Angad's. On hearing Pratigya call out his name, recognition bloomed on his face and he moved towards the motley group and said, "Pratigya? What are you doing here? I thought that there was a party at your place."

"Oh Rhishabh! That party isn't half as exciting as this party."

"What do you mean?" Rhishabh's forehead crinkled with confusion. As Krishna discerned the identity of the boy and his relation with Angad and tried to smother yet another giggle in his collar, Rhishabh's attention focused on him. "Angad, who is this?"

Krishna looked up to see his identity being questioned and opened his mouth to introduce himself but Pratigya beat him to it.

"This is Krishna. We came to the beach together. That's where we met Angad. And now that we've established why we are here, would you care to tell us why you are here?"

"Sure." Rhishabh looked at Angad who was signaling him to stop talking and continued "Angad and Imeet here daily." He glared at Angad as he increased the franticness of his signals. "This is kind of like our spot."

Pratigya looked at the squirming Angad and narrowed her eyes "Does Rhishabh know?"

"Do I know what?"

Pratigya ignored him and continued to address Angad. "Does Rhishabh know, Angad?"

"NO! Okay? He doesn't know anything?!" Angad burst out and sighed.

"You guys are freaking me out. What have you not told me Angad?"

"Babuji is forcing me to marry Pratigya." Angad said in a quiet tone.

"What?! But I thought that you told your father about us? About our plans?"

Pratigya moved forward to console Rhishabh as he started to cry. "What about all our plans Angad? Why didn't you tell your father?"

"I just couldn't okay? Babuji would have flipped! You don't understand how hard this is."

Rhishabh stopped crying and looked at Angad in disbelief. "I don't' understand? Angad, last night on this very spot, you told me that I was the only person in the world who understood you. Now I've suddenly morphed into not-understanding-guy? How did that happen?"

Angad moved towards Rhishabh to console him too. "I didn't mean it that way! You have met Babuji. You know what it is like when he doesn't like something or someone. He'll disown me Rhishabh!"

"But I thought you said that your father will try to understand if it concerns you. And even if he doesn't, it doesn't matter Angad. We'll still be together."

Angad looked as if he had realized his mistake. He wiped his eyes on his gamcha. Pratigya saw this and decided to go for the jugular.

"So, have we decided then?"

"Decided what?", Angad asked sniffling.

"That you're going to tell your Babuji about you and Rhishabh and that you can't marry me."

"Yes. I'll tell Babuji about that." Angad smiled at Rhishabh and clasped his hand. "I am so sorry to have put you through this Rhishabh."

"Sorry to have put Rhishabh through this? What about me? I experienced every negative emotion possible, just because you refused to tell your father. Where is my apology?"

Angad who was still holding hands with Rhishabh, smiled at Pratigya and gestured towards Krishna, "Fine. I am very sorry, Pratigya. I extend my infinite remorse towards you by giving you and Krishna my blessing."

"Your blessing?! How condescending is that? Just because you are happy with Rhishabh doesn't give you the ri.." Krishna swiftly moved towards Pratigya and covered her mouth with his hand, muffling her voice.

"What Pratigya really means is that, she's happy for you and thank you. We'll be on our way now. Bye."

Angad and Rhishabh nodded in reply and walked away from Pratigya and Krishna with smiles on their faces. Buddy barked in response to Angad's pat on the head.

"Ow!" Krishna flinched as Pratigya bit the hand covering her mouth and stomped on his foot simultaneously.

"What was that for?" he demanded checking his hand and seeing Pratigya's teeth marks firmly embedded in his skin.

"Why didn't you let me speak my mind to him? He deserved that after what he put me through these last years. And what about the engagement scare today? I had such a massive coronary on hearing Amma talk about announcing our engagement."

Buddy woofed in response as if concurring on the point as he had seen Pratigya cry.

"See? Even Buddy agrees."

"So doesn't he also agree to the fact that had we not being disturbed by your charming gay ex boyfriend, we would be having a steamy make out session just about now?"

Pratigya blushed and punched Krishna's arm. "Ah well. Aren't you a bit too sure about yourself?"

"Like we weren't having a moment when 'Queen Gamcha' showed up?"

"Moment? Krishna, don't flatter yourself. I am not the kind of girl who makes out with any cute stranger."

"I give you cute, but stranger? We just passed through a very life altering situation for you. I think that entitles me a promotion from stranger to friend."

"Friend? Hmmmn. I'll have to think about it."

"Sure. But think about this first."

Saying this, Krishna swept Pratigya in his arms, inclined her so that her long hair swept the sandy floor of the beach and tilted his head to meet her lips in a sweet and salty kiss.

Before Pratigya knew what was happening, Krishna's lips had met hers in the most explosive kiss of the century. Her ears were booming with the loud noises of the ocean waves and Buddy's shrill barks. Her hands and feet were tingly from the being cold and wet for such a long time. Her soaked t shirt and shorts were providing the flimsiest cover against the cool ocean breeze and yet she could literally feel steam gushing out of her ears. The feeling of Krishna's soft lips gently coaxing her own in the age old dance of Love was slowly melting her defenses until she started responding with passion and curled up tightly in his muscular arms.

When he felt Pratigya begin to lose herself in the kiss, he hugged her closer till he couldn't feel where her limbs started and where his ended. Buddy was going crazy and jumping in little circles around them, barking his doggy head off. After a particularly animated jump by Buddy landed dangerously close to their puckered lips, Krishna reluctantly pulled away from Pratigya to escape the lovesick dog's amorous attention.

Pratigya looked confused at Krishna's sudden withdrawal and staggered ungracefully to a standing position. The adrenaline from the kiss and the head rush from standing up too fast combined to form a haze around her already soupy mind. She stared vaguely at Krishna while simultaneously touching her lips with the back of her hand, wondering where the gloriously delicious feelings had disappeared too.

Krishna saw her unconsciously licking her lips as if to taste the reminder of their passion and had to force himself to think of something else then the disturbingly gorgeous image of her kiss swollen lips. He balled his hands into tight fists and focused his attention on Buddy who was humping what appeared to be a poodle-shaped piece of driftwood.

"So? That was good. Right?"

Krishna looked up at Pratigya's tentatively voiced question. "Good? More like mind blowing."

Pratigya's face broke in a wide grin as she shrugged the pent up tension from her shoulders which had formed at Krishna's hesitancy in meeting her eyes after the kiss. "Not bad for someone who I thought was a stranger." She looked at him and put her hands on her hips. "Why did you cut it short though?"

Krishna smiled mischievously at her. "So you didn't want the kiss to end?"

Pratigya buried her face in her hands to hide the growing color in her cheeks. Krishna smiled on seeing her shyness and kicked some sand in her direction. Feeling the sting of the little sandy particles on her hands, she looked at him with mock anger and kicked sand back in his face. Krishna reared back laughing and a sand fight ensued which ended with Buddy trying to bite Krishna's hands and Krishna retaliating by dunking Buddy's beloved mistress in the cold sea water. Krishna had never felt happier. Less than 20 miles away Adarsh couldn't help but feel happy too.

Chapter 16:

"And then we talked for the longest time. It was awesome. She even apologized for being bitchy towards me all these years."

Adarsh and Krishna were in Adarsh's room trying to complete their homework. Krishna was lying on his stomach on the floor trying to concentrate on Calculus while simultaneously hearing Adarsh and Komal's patch up story. Somehow Krishna had a hard time believing that Adarsh had single-handedly pulled 6 guys off of Komal and kicked their all of their asses at once without so much as a single bruise on him. He was happy for him though. It was time that he deserved what was perfect for him.

"You have been awfully quiet. Where did you disappear to in the evening? And what was up with the wet tux and the sandy hair?"

"I had gone to the beach."

"Alone?" Adarsh asked shutting his books and sitting up on the bed now that Krishna's evening had become interesting.

"Don't shut your books. It's not that much of a deal."

"Oh c'mon! I told you all of my evening's juicy details. I want to know yours now."

"Fine. I found Pratigya crying, we ditched the party and took Buddy with us to the beach where Angad found us and then Rhishabh found Angad and then Pratigya forced Angad to come out of the dark, dark closet where he had been hiding and tell his father that he wouldn't marry Pratigya and that he liked Rhishabh even though he was a boy and had only boy-parts and then Angad agreed and he and Rhishabh blessed us and went away in the moonlight and then I kissed Pratigya and had a sand fight afterwards, which by the way I won, and then I rescued Buddy from getting his little doggy weiner broken by stopping him from humping a rock and then I dropped Pratigya home, she climbed up the tree to her bedroom window, and I came home, through the back door I might add, and slept the most sound sleep in the world dreaming about drowning in footwear, which was weird."

Adarsh was looking at Krishna with his mouth hanging open. "Buddy tried to hump a rock?"

"A rock, some driftwood, a sandcastle, my ankle, Angad's ankle, Rhishabh's ankle, some jogger who was jogging at a totally weird time's ankle, I could go on all day about the things he kept humping."

"And you kissed Pratigya? How was it?"

"Dude! Really not comfortable with telling you how I had some tongue action going on with the girl you consider your almost sister."

"I am not asking for the details. Just a little PG-13 version."

Krishna closed his books too. No point in pretending to solve differentials while dishing about your lip lock with the girl of your dreams. "So, the moonlight was hitting the waves in the perfect not-too-white-but-sort-of-bluish-tinty way. There was this cool sea breeze that was bringing the sweetest salty scent of the waves to where we were standing. She had just bit my hand and was pretending to ignore the sizzling chemistry between us. I ignored her ignoring and pulled her close to me and sort of dipped her down and then kissed her. It was so magical! She tasted like early morning dew on the petals of the sweetest smelling flower in the world. She was so soft and yielding and warm that I completely forgot where we were till Buddy tried to snog me. Still, it was the best night of my entire life!"

Both boys sighed and looked at each other. Adarsh looked dreamily at Krishna and said, "That is so Mills and Boons dude! The setting, the atmosphere, the kiss."

Krishna looked at Adarsh and smiled goofily. "I know…." He came out of his trance and realized what Adarsh had just said. "Wait, WHAT?! MILLS AND BOONS? YOU READ M&B?"

"Don't mock the tardy romantic genre dude. These books make a very good read."

"Oh I am sure! Mills and Boons, Adarsh? Mills and Boons? Aren't you disturbed enough already from watching Sandra Bullock movies?"

Adarsh stood up on his bed and looked angrily at Krishna. "Do not make fun of Sandra Bullock. Ever."

"I am so scared. Adarsh might 'HIEEYAAA' me", Krishna said pretending to shiver. "So that's what is in those boxes under your bed. M&B books. To think that I believed you when you said they were your po*n stash."

"Drama, suspense, love, anger, betrayal. These stories have everything in them. You should try them sometime, you know."

"Um thanks. But I'll stick to my Shakespeares and Dostoyevskys." Krishna bent down and pulled the box of Adarsh's books outside. He started rummaging in the box while a horrified Adarsh jumped down on his back and started pummeling him to prevent him for reading the embarrassing titles out loud.

"'The Kung-Fu Fighter's Mistress', is this where you learned your 'HIEEYAAA' from?", Krishna said laughing as he waved around the bright pink colored book which had a picture of a ripped, half-naked Asian guy who was being gazed adoringly by an equally half-naked, absurdly beautiful Asian chick.

"Is that M&B magna edition?"

Both the boys froze as Komal walked in. She had knocked on the door twice but the boys who were busy wrestling around were very loud and she had decided to just barge in. Just as she walked in she immediately recognized the bright pink paperback and burst out laughing at Adarsh's expression of embarrassment.

"Yes! Yes! This is Adarsh's book. He likes reading s**tty romance novels in his free time. I found a box full of them under his bed. Ow!" Krishna grimaced in pain at the blow Adarsh had delivered him, right in his stomach.

"Is it so crazy for a well-adjusted boy to like this appealing genre?"

Komal settled comfortably on Adarsh's study desk. "I don't know which words seem more wrong? Well-adjusted or appealing?"

Krishna burst out laughing and Komal joined in with Adarsh shaking his head and looking angrily at the both of them. As he collected his strewn M&B's and shoved the box back under the bed he looked questioningly at the still laughing Komal. "Why are you here?"

Wiping tears of laughter from her eyes she replied, "Pratigya asked me to come."

Hearing Pratigya's name, Krishna sobered up instantly. "Pratigya? What's wrong? Did her parents do something to her?"

"Calm down dude. Yes, her mother was very angry at her but after hearing Angad Bhaiyya's side of the story she is ok with it now. But.."

"But what? What?!"

"Her father is still mad at her. Believe me, you don't want Sajjan Singh mad at you. He's not allowing her to step out of the house."

"Angad is gay and that is Pratigya's fault? How is this her fault? Why is she being punished?"

"He's just angry on losing such a powerful alliance. This is going to make his political aims suffer."

"He's crazy if you ask me." Adarsh joined in the conversation. "Just as crazy as your brother", he said pointing at Komal. "Why didn't he come out of the closet before? I mean, he'd rather ruin Pratigya's life than admit that he's gay?"

"It's not easy being an outsider here Adarsh. Trust me, I know. I thought you knew how it felt like too." Krishna said standing up and walking towards Adarsh's bedroom window. He opened it and leaned out as far as he could to catch a glimpse of Pratigya's bedroom window.

Komal came up behind him and patted him on the shoulder. "It's no use dude. She's not home."

"What?! I thought you said her father grounded her."

Adarsh smiled and came to the window too. "Krishna, if there's one thing you should know about Pratigya, it is this. She can scale any vertical surface. She's kinda like the girly version of Spiderman."

Komal grinned on hearing an accurate description of her best friend's skills. "You know, now that I think about it, I swear I saw her getting bitten by a poisonous spider that day."

"What the both of you mean is that she scaled down her bedroom wall and broke out of Sajjan Singh's Alcatraz? Amazing!" Krishna shook his head at his earlier memory of Pratigya climbing up the wall to her window the previous night after their beach party and then when he had seen her climb up to the roof on his first night at the Saxena's house. "Now that you mention it, I bet she never takes the stairs. I have always seen her climbing up and down walls. I repeat, amazing!"

"You forgot what I was saying." Komal said getting comfortable on Adarsh's desk again. "Pratigya sent me here to ask you to go down to the beach again. She's waiting for you there."

"Beach?"

"That's what she said."

"Fine. You guys want to come along?"

Adarsh looked at Komal on hearing Krishna's question. Komal shrugged. "Sure."

"Then lets go."

"Wait. You're wearing that to the beach?"

On hearing Komal's question looked down at his everyday attire of jeans, wifebeater and boots. "What's wrong with what I'm wearing?"

"It's 10 in the morning. The sun will be overhead soon. You'll burn to a crisp dude." Adarsh warned Krishna.

"Fine. But we're leaving in 5 minutes so don't take your princess time to get ready." Krishna told Adarsh and left the room to get ready.

"Princess time? Unbelievable! First the M&B's, now this. I am seeing an entire new side of you Adarsh Saxena." Komal said chuckling as she closed his bedroom door behind her.

#############################################################

"Pratigya?"

Pratigya turned around to find Krishna, Komal and Adarsh smiling at her. "You guys! Everyone came? Yea!"

Buddy jumped around going crazy at the number of interesting smelling people petting him. He recognized Krishna and put his paws on his chest, trying to lick his mouth.

"Down Buddy! Wow. No one's ever been this excited to see me."

"Now that Buddy knows you, he'll never tire out of doing this." Pratigya said, hauling a drooling Buddy back from the gang. "Guys, want to walk down to the pier?"

"Nah. You go ahead. We're going to go up to the lighthouse. Right Adarsh?" Komal said nudging a reluctant Adarsh in the opposite direction.

Catching on Komal's plan to let Pratigya and Krishna have some alone time, Adarsh nodded and followed Komal while giving Krishna a thumbs up behind his back. Krishna shook his head and stuck his tongue out at Adarsh.

"This beach has a pier?"

"Yup. You'll see how beautiful it is up there."

"So, aren't you supposed to be grounded?"

"Yeah. For something that I had absolutely no influence over. Baba was so mad. He locked me up in my room. Told Amma to lock up Buddy too."

"You are looking very beautiful."

Pratigya blinked at him on his sudden change of topic and looked at her grungy clothes self consciously. Her denim short shorts and the oversize Garfield t shirt suddenly made her feel awkward and boyish. She remembered that she had forgone any makeup that day and her hair was in the same ratty ponytail from last night. She looked at Krishna who was looking like Adonis in his neon green Tony Hawk jammies and a trademark white wifebeater and closed her eyes with embarrassment. "You're just saying that because I look like a horror, aren't you?"

"Horror? Pratigya, you're the most beautiful girl on this beach. You're the most beautiful girl on East Street. You're probably the most beautiful girl on this side of the Earth."

Pratigya blushed and punched Krishna on the arm. "Stop that! I am looking like the crap that crap craps."

"Okay, now you're just quoting from HIMYM. You are so much better than these bimbos in the bikinis with their fake tans and raccoon-like eye makeup and don't even get me started on the hair pyramids of gel. I swear I saw a Snooki look alike by the water."

Pratigya laughed and turned to face Krishna. "Now that you mention it, you are also looking quite a catch yourself."

Krishna pretended to flex his muscles and said in a faux macho voice, "Yeah, I know. I tried to tone it down but the hotness just refuses to be underplayed."

"Shut up. Lets see how hotness is going to help you here." Pratigya said pointing at the almost perpendicular face of solid rock surface that rose intimidatingly in front of them, jutting out of the sand. "We have to climb this to get to the other side. That is where the pier is. Awesome right?"

Krishna looked at her disbelievingly and then turned to Buddy. "You hear that boy? Your owner is going to kill me on the first date." He groaned and saw that Pratigya had already started climbing using the nature made crevices in the wall as hand and foot holds. He saw her wriggling bottom in the air and decided that maybe the climb wasn't such a bad idea after all. Atleast the view was great! Grinning from ear to ear he started hauling his body up the steep surface, mentally saving the image of a sweaty Pratigya grunting her way to the top of the rocks, in the naughty compartment of his mind.

#############################################################

"So what do you think they are talking about?"

Adarsh arched his eyebrow at Komal's question and shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know. Maybe about their last night's kiss?"

"What?! They kissed?"

"Uh.. No?", Adarsh suddenly started feeling cornered. Like a goat before slaughtering.

"Eh now. Don't lie to me. They kissed, didn't they? That's why they wanted to be alone today. And Pratigya calls herself my best friend? She didn't even mention the kissage."

"Krishna wasn't exactly forthcoming with the dirty details either.", Adarsh tried to console her.

"Dirty details?!", Komal exclaimed and he realized that he had just made it worse. "Tell me all about it. I want all the juicy bits, start with Krishna's hair was blowing southward in the south-west flowing sea breeze and proceed at that detail level."

"Drop it Komal! I am not giving you the details. Ask Pratigya when they return."

"Wait for her to come back? Who know how long that might take! I can't wait without knowing the details of the kiss for that long. I'll explode!"

"You're like the squirrel in Ice Age. The one with the crazy eyes who's after the nut."

"So?"

"It's my nut. Drop it!" Adarsh said angrily, sitting down at a good spot with an exciting view of the sea.

"Fine." She spread her blanket on the sand and plopped down beside Adarsh. "Don't tell me. Why do you care that I might explode?" She started rubbing tanning lotion on her pale arms and legs. "Pratigya mentions you in our conversations dozens of times. I'd probably have told you each of them word-to-word. But now that you're withholding info, then so am I. I am going to work on my tan now." She pulled down her floppy sun-hat over her eyes, leaned back on the blanket and pretended to doze off watching Adarsh squirm.

#############################################################

The sun was not completely overhead, so the day was still feeling cool. It was a little cloudy and the crisp morning air was making the temperature drop. The view from the pier was really amazing. The steep rocky surface gave way to the most beautiful blue-green water reservoir Krishna had ever seen. The tiny reservoir was surrounded by a dense grove of fresh-water trees. Paddle boats lined the artificial coast. Sand was sprinkled sporadically on the rocky surface. To his far right, brown caves were clustered together. Buddy ran eagerly to one of the many upturned dinghies that decorated the sandy rocks. The sudden change from the humid air of the beach made Krishna forget about his throbbing shin, which he had skinned on the climb up.

Pratigya was leading them to a pier built out of old-fashioned wood which had turned green from moss from the constant sprays of the reservoir water. She stopped when they reached the farthest point out on the pier. Then she turned to Krishna and asked, "What do you think?"

Krishna looked at her with her long arms and legs, standing proudly on the pier, with her long hair blowing in the wind. The sunlight was falling on her from behind, illuminating her profile, making her look like a halo had encompassed her entire body. The light deepened her black-brown eyes till they turned into an almost raven-purple color. Looking at him from under her lashes, with her creamy shoulder exposed from the oversize t shirt and her tanned never-ending legs planted firmly on the ground, he was suddenly overcome with his love for her.

Pratigya stood on her most favorite spot on the Earth with Krishna and felt like something had suddenly completed her. She used to come here full of frustration because of her father, mother or Angad and the beauty and tranquil of the place would calm her and restore her spirit. Yet she always felt like a part of her was missing. She came here with Komal and Adarsh and Buddy but never felt the bone-deep contention that was spreading through her now. When she turned around to ask Krishna what he felt about the pier, her breath caught in her throat at the intensity of his gaze. The sun was hitting his face in full force which made his eyes glitter like molten gold. His stance was so male that she felt like melting in a puddle at his feet. On top of that his expression was so soft and sincere with love that she felt like they were floating on the clouds and a shower of delicious love rain was caressing all their senses. She was taken aback when he moved closer to her and enveloped her tight in his arms.

Krishna sighed as he buried his face in her hair. A hint of vanilla and strawberries. Her arms went around his neck and she threaded her fingers through his soft hair. His emotions had reached a breaking point and he couldn't control his feelings of love for the girl who he had met just a few weeks back. The girl who loved him back unconditionally. The girl who was driving him crazy by grazing the sensitive spot behind his ear with her fingernails. He took a deep breath and loosened his hold on her waist, giving himself just enough room to pull back and study her face closely.

"Do I have dirt on my face?"

"What?!"

"Yes or no?"

"No!"

"Then why are you looking at me like something's wrong with my face?"

Krishna laughed and rested his head on her shoulder. "There is nothing wrong with your face Pratigya. Your interpretations of facial expressions suck. I told you before, you are the most beautiful girl in the world."

Pratigya gave him a shy smile and said, "Maybe I just like hearing that a lot. Lets go and sit by the edge of the pier. There is a terrific view of the water from there. Come Buddy."

Krishna removed his arms from around her waist and allowed himself to be pulled in the direction of the ocean. "You know, view was pretty terrific two seconds ago."

Buddy who was off exploring the interesting smells of the rocks and sand bounded in the direction of the laughing duo. His little doggy heart was light on seeing his mistress so happy.

"There's a ledge you can sit on here. Climb down." Pratigya offered Krishna her hand and they settled comfortably on the wooden instep of the pier. Krishna sat with his legs stretched out in from of him, leaning backwards on his hands while Pratigya sat with her back straight and wrapped her arms around her knees. Buddy settled down on Krishna's lap, tired from running around the pier. After about a minute of silence, Pratigya spoke up suddenly. "I used to pee standing up till I was 8 years old."

"What?"

"I saw my boy cousins pee standing up and so even I used to pee standing up till I was 8 years old."

"Pratigya did your head hit a rock on the climb up? What are you talking about?"

"I like you very much Krishna. I realized that we know nothing about each other. So I am telling you things about me which nobody knows. Not even Komal."

Krishna smiled at her and said, "Well, I do know that you can scale walls abnormally fast. What else?"

"My hand was in a print ad when I was 12 years old. The producers of the ad approached me because they wanted a hand model. I thought that Buddy was a girl dog. I had named him 'Budding Rose'. But then an important organ of the male anatomy showed up and I had to rechristen him 'Buddy'." Buddy stirred and woofed on hearing his name. Krishna laughed and prodded her to go on. "In pre-school the teachers had made me the frog in 'Frog Prince' and I had to kiss the princess. The girl who was playing the princess used to yank my braids and so on the day of the play, I bit her hard on the nose instead of kissing her in front of the teachers and all the parents. For the longest time, I thought that tiny people live in the TV and when you changed the channel, they change clothes and put on a different show. Last year, in our garden I found an exactly heart-shaped rock with a rather funky smell, which melted in the rain. Turns out that Buddy had had a gold-pendant breakfast! He had swallowed Amma's pendant and then pooped it out. Till this day I feel nauseous whenever I go near gold ornaments." She petted Buddy fondly and said to Krishna, "I think I have exhausted my stock of crack pot stories. Your turn now macho-guy."

Krishna scratched his head, thinking back over the years, trying to remember his childhood pranks and antics. "I used to score full marks in Geography every year till the 7th grade. I was afraid of Big Bird and used to cry every time my brother made me watch Sesame Street. No woman had ever seen me in boxers before our 'kitchen incident'. I have worked as a valet, salesman, hamburger mascot, garage painter, car detailer, tennis ball fetcher and busboy."

Author's Note: sorry for the incomplete looking chapter. Exams are going on and I just couldn't find the time to complete this chapter.. More on this next week..
