Stubble's in...on the small screen

DESIREE LOBO, TNN, Aug 8, 2010, 12.00am IST

Gone are the days when women liked their men in the "oh so cute and adorable clean shaven look." Today they are quite enamoured by the rugged stubble look.

At least on TV, that's what they seem to like best. Most of our TV main leads, positive as well as negative, are keeping their whiskers on and getting a thumbs up for it from their audiences. "The reason I sport this look is because it helps me look mature and adds quality to my character," says Pavitra Rishta's good boy Manav aka
Sushant Singh Rajput. The boyish-looking Jay Soni of Sasural Genda Phool (SGP) too surely wants to look mature enough to play hubby to Ragini Khanna and what more than the semi-beard to help him get there. "The producers decided on this look and then we waited to see the viewers' response. They've accepted it well I think," says Jay.

Then there's Arhaan Behl, whose character in Pratigya which has shades of positive and negative, demands the tough look. "Or else I would come across as a soft guy," quips Arhaan.
Aditya Reej in Na Aana Iss Des Mein Laado too has similar reasons: "My character demands this as it can confuse the audience whether I'm playing the good or the bad guy."

The rugged look may highlight the manliness in these young stars, but how tough is it to manage the stubble? Hottie Nikkhil Arya, who plays the popular baddie Ritesh in Tere Liye, says it's not that tedious to maintain. "Not everybody gets a beautifully even stubble... so if you have one, you are truly blessed. Maintaining it needs a lot of patience and a couple of spare trimmers handy at all times. But at the end of the day it's worth it, what with all the adulation you receive from people, especially the fairer sex! Also you can experiment more with different looks," says Nikkhil.

So what is it that the viewers find most appealing about the stubble? "It makes a guy look hot, whether he's playing positive or negative!" says Pratyusha Dhruv, a collegian and TV buff. It's a co-incidence that most top actors on TV these days have a stubble, says Nayana Parekh, a housewife. "But it's suiting them. The roles in serials these days are very different and there's very little scope for the chocolate-boy look," says Surekha Kulkarni, a bank employee and an avid TV watcher. "The stubble look, in many ways, helps to separate the boys from the men," says Tanya Goyal, a housewife. "I feel it gives an actor a lot more depth and maturity. It really works! For me, these are the real men," she says. Shaheen Khan, a student, who's also taken a fancy to this trend, has gone one step ahead. "I have told my boyfriend to have this look," she reveals.
Not just audiences, telly actresses too give men a thumbs up. "It looks really nice," says Ankita Lokhande, who stars opposite Sushant in Pavitra Rishta. Ragini Khanna of SGP too likes the macho men more. "This makes them look more like men than boys!" she says.

The stubble look is working well for the actors, not just professionally, but personally too. Uttaran's Nandish Sandhu has found his true calling in terms of his appearance. "Now when I look back I feel the chocolate-boy clean-shaven look just didn't suit me. I think it's quite old-fashioned too. I'm happy with this and my girl-friends too would agree." Arhaan adds to that, "Maintaining this getup suits me fine because I anyway don't like shaving."
