CHAPTER-5.

Finally the night was here..

The whole house was lit up beautifully by Ranvi and his friends..But the main program was outside in a field by their house,which was also decorated by them..The trees around where decorated with lights too..Everyone was invited to meet the older Veera..

Ranvi welcomed some more village people and offerefd them drinks.When they queried about Veera,Ranvi smiled and said she would be here any minute now.

Baldev's ears perked up at Ranvi's words..He looked around stealthily,and walked past Ranvi,his friends ,and the group of people gathered at different places..

He could hear everyone's discussion about Veera..He gritted his teeth at the flowery praises for her..

"Stupid villagers!"He cursed them in a whisper,as he moved to a darkened corner..

She was not here yet,but would be soon..And he,Baldev Singh,had planned a very good surprise for her..He chuckled with glee at the thought,as he took out his cell phone and made a call.

"Hello..You fixed everything just like I said?Okay I'm coming,after I finish my job here..And you go and do what I told you to do next.."

Baldev kept the phone back in his brown jacket's pocket with a naughty smile on his lips..His eyes scanning the crowd of people looking for someone to help him execute his plan..

His eyes lit up,when he saw him..

Baldev after finishing his task was just leaving the party area,when he heard it from behind him..

"VEERA?! IS THAT VEERA?!SHE HAS GROWN UP SO MUCH!"Someone exclaimed out..

Baldev paused on his tracks..If he just turned,he could see her..

But something stopped him..He had to execute his plan,and welcome her differently..There would be time enough for him to see her face then..

He chuckled nastily as he left the party area..

Veera had come down and met everyone for almost half an hour now..Almost the entire village was here..

Almost,as she missed three people here..She smiled and hugged another old aunty,her eyes restlessly scanning the crowd..

The last of the list was Bansuri,who she was glad was not here at all.

The second one was Gunjan didi..Her most favourite person after her Veerji.She was missing her lively presence terribly..

But even more than that she was missing the person she hated most..She was really curious so as to know what he had grown up into..And if he had changed any bit at all..She was really eager to meet her childhood foe-Baldev Singh..

Another group of people came to meet her,and sighing out,she put on her brightest smile and greeted them with her natural warmth..

Veera was busy talking with an old girl friend,when a small boy pulled at her hand..

Smiling she knelt down to talk with the cute little boy..

The boy just shoved a piece of paper in her hand,and ran away..

Frowning with confusion,Veera excused herself from her friend,and walked to a silent corner to read the paper..

It was a dirty scrawl written clumsily..It said:

MEET ME BELOW THE MANGO TREE BESIDE THE WELL..IT'S URGENT..

RANVI..

She frowned deeper in confusion..

"VEERJI?!Veerji ne mainu uththe kiu bulaya?!!Par wo to abhi..[VEERJI?!But why did Veerji call me over there?!He was just now..]"She scanned the crowd,but did not see a trace of Ranvi..

Veera found Dalbeer,Ranvi's friend and queried about him..

"Ranvi?He hurried out some time ago..Said it's something urgent.."

What happened?!Veera thought tensely.

Veera worriedly walked towards the mentioned..

Her sandals crunching on the dry twigs and leaves,fallen on the ground..The place was lonely as always..People rarely came over here..Especially at night,this place was the loneliest and scariest in the whole village..

A cold wind blew and made her shiver..She wished she had been wearing her favourite jeans and jacket right now..Instead of this Dark purple Punjabi suit,that Ranvi had gifted her for the party.

She thanked God that it was a full moon night,or else she would have been scared of the ghosts who..

Suddenly something white past her,she noticed through the corner of her eyes,and nearly screamed out loud..

She quickly turned,but there was nothing but thin air..And some small shrubs..

"Veerji!Kaha ho aap?![Veerji!Where are you?!]"She called out softly,afraid even to talk loudly..

She had almost reached the mango tree,and still did not see a trace of Ranvi.

Now worried even more,she took out her phne,and atarted calling Ranvi..

"Why is the network so weak here?!"She whispered with irritation,as she walked closer to the tree..

Baldev was grinning with satisfaction like a Cheshire cat,as he hid behind a bush nearby..

Anytime now,she would step on that rope and,that pot of paint will fall on top of her,and she will tumble into that hole..

He was still grinning when he noticed her face in the light from her phone..And his smile vanished.

It was not Veera!It was her!His Khushboo!

Quickly he got up..He had to stop her before..!

Veera stumbled on a rope on the ground,and was just about to fall,when a hand closed over her hand..Strong male fingers entangling with hers in a tight grip..

She was not over the shock when she suddenly felt something liquid and sticky fall on her held hand from the top of the tree..Just before her savior and she lost balance and tumbled into some dry leave stacks which turned out to be a huge hole..

Gasping and out of breath she stared into the face of her savior,barely able to see him through the slight moonlight entering into the hole..

"Are you alright?!"He whispered urgently,making her gasp out her shock..

It was HIM!The same person she had tried not to think about the entire day..!Veera thought breathlessly as she stared at his face,so close to hers,her body still wrapped in his arms,her hand still held in his..

Slowly she nodded her head,letting him know she was alright,and she instantly felt him relax and sigh out in relief.

She was just about to ask him what he was doing here,when they heard two voices..

"VEERA?!"

"BALDEV?!"

"I'm here-..!"Veera and Baldev started replying at the same time,and then stopped..

Dumbstruck,they turned to look at each other,not able to believe each other..

"TU BALDEV..?!"

"TU VEERA..?!"

They squeaked out at the same time..Their eyes nearly bulging out in shock..Minutes passed and they stared into each other's eyes,the reality taking time to sink in..They could not believe this turn of events..

Meanwhile the voices calling them had turned to leave again,clearly believing they were not there,as they did not notice the hole,they were trapped in..

A few minutes passed,till finally they realized their close cozy sitting position,and instantly tried to move away..

Baldev removed his arms from around her,and Veera tred to move away too..But their hand still stayed in each other's..

"CHADDH MAINU BALDEV!!![LET ME GO BALDEV!!!]"Veera hissed ut angrily,trying to free her still held hand..

Baldev who was struggling to let go of the same hand,sneered at her with anger..

"MAINU KAUNSA SHAUKH HAI TERI HAAT PAKARKE BAITHNE KI?!PAR YE KAMBAKHTH HAAT TERE SE CHIPAK KIU GAYA?!![I don't have any desire to sit holding your hands!!But this stupid hand,why is it stuck to yours?!]"

They struggled in vain,but their hand stayed stuck..

"BALDEVA!YE ZAROOR TERA GHATIYA KOI CHAAL HAI!BATA MAINU TUNE KYA DALNE KI SOCHA THA MERE UPAR..?!

[BALDEVA!THIS MUST BE ONE OF YOUR ROTTEN PLANS!TELL ME WHAT WERE YOU ABOUT TO POUR ON TOP OF ME?!!]"Veera hissed out angrily,still pulling at her hand..

Baldev looked at her face,as understanding finally dawned..Something had fallen on their held hand..

He frowned slightly..

"Maine to rang rakhne ko kaha tha un gadho ko..Par ye to..[I had told them to keep paint..But this is..]"

"BUT THIS IS GLUE!!!"Veera finished his sentence with a loud hiss,her eyes looking into his with anger and frustration..
